I have been advised to reformat my laptop. I don't have too many files on my laptop so losing them won't really matter, however when i put the Windows XP cd in to my drive and start up the laptop it only goes so far and keeps saying to insert the cd as files in D:i386 are missing. When i tried to run it with my pc already started up it said "i386winntupg etupgrd.dll" was missing.

The monitor goes black and the pc reboots but does not get as far as windows,displaying the message:windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/Ntfs.sys"unable to do this because after pressing "r" at the first "welcome to set-up" screen I get the message:

I have a compaq that had many virus and spyware problems and want to reformat or reinstall the hard drive. I installed xp upgrade over ME and am not sure how to approach the problem from here. should i try and do a re install or ust start over.` I had excellent advice to find what my computer was doing from this board

I've been having problems with the PC (Windows XP) and just want to start from scratch. What's the quickest way to reformat the drive so I can re-install Windows XP and go from there. Also, is there any software you recommend to try and protect from viruses etc. I did have Zone Alarm and AVG, but maybe that's not enough.

I used Windows Pro for awhile but started having a problem with my sound settings (mic stopped working and since I'm a Counter-Strike player I kind of needed it back for CAL :P) so we decided after trying a new sound card, etc, etc that it was the settings (well, my brother decided that after checking on it, appearently something was reveresed for some reason?), anyways we went to install Windows Home and all went well on the installing it from the CD part, but once it got into the configuring part or whatever it kept freezing at the "Install Network" part. So after trying that about 20 times we started using the Pro version to see if it would work.... same thing. So now I'm back trying to get the Home version to work (basically just going through the motions that my bro told me to do) and it keeps freezing there
What i mean is can I just start my computer from the XP install CD w/o having formatted my harddrive which currently contains server 2003 and expect XP to install over server 2003? Or can I format my harddrive if i only have one?

There's at least 1 file gone awol and I don't want to reload to factory settings (Crtl + F11, Dell and no XP cd).Incidentally, my I386 folder is too big to burn to cd as it's a whopping 971 MB.

My computer is an amd so do i copy the amd64 instead of the i386? Is the i386 only for intel and amd64 for amd?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded SP3 and I didn't have SP1a so I had to get installed that first in order to installed SP3 over it. Since then I am experiencing this problem with the above thread i386/kdcom.dll file is corrupted when I try to set up with booting with Windows XP professional CD and I do not have floppy drive to boot it with set up or repair floppies of NT operating system. Actually this problem happened due to ADOBE updates every now and then pops up to install when I do it says failed to install with reason "either your computer is running in Safe mode or windows setup is corrupted and tells me to reset it but it won't let me set it up or boot the disc.
I already have checked the CMOS bios and the prime master is the hard disc and secondary master is the CD ROM. Otherwise my PC is running fine with proper speed Also it won't let me uninstall my older version of ADOBE 9.2 program from AD REMOVE list. Please tell me what to do. The error code it gives me while trying to boot is 4096 also says INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupted.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an older laptop in which the hard drive and broken on, I was hoping to fix it so that my in-laws could use it to keep in touch with family via Skype. So...I purchsed a new 20gb hard drive and fitted it yesterday. The laptop booted up ok but after the Bios screen displayed an error message of "ntldr is missing press ctrl, alt, delete to restart" When I rebooted with my Windows XP cd in it's gets just past the Bios screen and then displays some errors in French! The jist of these errors I think is that the boot.ini file could not be found. I tried to reboot but I still get another error message in french! From what I can see it does not say anything about boot.ini this time though. I have also tried a XP Recovery Console Repair to no avail either and have exhausted everything I know. what I need to do to install XP onto this HDD (it has been formatted too)? Any explanation on why the messages are in French? Also one thing to mention is that when I manage to boot with XP Live CD and use Command Prompt the letters I type on the keyboard come out all wrong ie. : comes out as * and m comes out as 0

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Win XP on a freshly formatted C: drive of an IBM HDD using a slipstreamed XP disk.It appeared to install normally, loaded all the required drivers and configured without problems. But when booted and rebooted several times it shows a desktop with the standard background, BUT NO TASKBAR nor START BUTTON. The computer is ok because it loads XP normally from the slave drive.When I run the Task Manager it shows the startup files, explorer.exe and normal processes, but will not respond to the shutdown option.Since I can't access "Run", I can't run "Regedit" or any of the suggestions made to others.

Ive been trying to install windows xp pro onto a compaq presario 5000 for the last 2 months but it doesnt want to go. i tried a flat out cd boot,

I tried to install windows xp pro from inside windows 2000 pro, but the stuff freezes the second i click install windows xp from the autorun menu's.
Trying to install XP on a SATA W.D. Raptor I've did it before but now when I put the floppy in for the Drivers I keep getting TXTSETUP.OEM missing I've checked the floppy for its contents and it is there, The drive has XP Pro on it now but been running it for a year and like to clean it up.

Today i turned on my computer and as it was booting it went to a screen saying NTLDR is missing. press ctrl-alt-delete to restart. so i press ctrl alt delete and it restarts only to pause at the same screen.
