The settings for autoplay and cd recording can be tweaked by opening explorer or my computer, right click on the cd-rom drive, then click properties. While this usually works, sometimes it doesn't and you'll have to edit the registry.
View 9 RepliesWorking on xp box, wouldn't backup data from qbpro directly to cd, uninstalled nero, realplayer and other extraneous items, rebooted and wala! No problem, cd writing wizard popped up after backup, did probably 10 backups. She also mentioned that her accountant couldnt get her flashdrive to install anymore. I plugged in usb device. No sweat, popped right up. Today she called, same problem, have to shut machine down completely to resolve it now, windows restart won't fix it. (which sadly, I realize was the case yesterday) She was atttempting to make multiple backup cd's, so she checked burn same again. It comes up with insert writeable cd. Doesn't recognise swap, after exiting cd wizard one time, it did pop up with the contents of the cd, but only one time. Also figured out that if I insert usb device after restart, it recognises it correctly, but then get write error (insert writeable cd) when attempting to do a a backup. If I start doing backups, can do them fine, utnil trying to write same file to another cd. Have found many referneces to autoinsert errors in the registry etc. but auto insert appears to be working after restart. Am confident complete reinstall will fix the problem.
View 4 Replies View Relatedeverytime I insert a USB thumb drive into one of the two USB ports, the computer automatically shuts down.I have tried inserting another USB device into the port, and it works.Therefore I was leaning towards the driver being the problem. In device manager,it says that the device is working properly.The USB thumb drive came with a CD-ROM, but it only has the drivers for Windows 98 on it, as they are not needed for XP.I have since cleaned and re-formatted the computer, taking every back to its orginal state, as it came out of the box.

I also have ultramon setting my backgrounds and they never stick after a reset of the computer. I wanna say this has something to do with me installing and uninstalling mcafee and norton a couple of times. (i have only norton now).

Before it used to ask me what to do but now it doesn't do anything. The autoplay is on, and set to 'prompt me what to do' but it just doesn't. There's a service in charge of this (shell hardware detection), and it's running ok, started, automatic, everything is ok. Any suggestions? (besides reinstalling ).I'm not posting the specs for this notebook since I believe it doens't have anything to do with the hardware but if you need them just ask.

With Win 98 SE, There was a single registry entry that could be changed from 0 (?) to 1 or the opposite.I have searched the various XP websites to no avail.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am having an annoying problem. I even reformatted my pc to get rid of it and it still does it. Autoplay keeps trying to autoplay when nothing is in there to play. ALL the time and it is very annoying. Can anything be done about this? Next time it happens I will take a shot and link it back here so you can see what I mean. Please tell me you guys can help me. Thanks.
Edited: Ok here is the link of what I mean. The autoplay box comes on all the time even when nothing is in any of the drives. I am not trying to run anything btw. Again thanks!

Complaint was audio CDs won't play. Think problem is actually autoplay doesn't work. It is enabled for the drives/files. Tried Microsoft autoplay repair tool, Tweak, checked services. Music CDs just won't autoplay

When the DVD is done autoplay automatically returns to "music files". Is there a way to set autoplay for multiple files or to disable it so that my computer will play any media I insert?

The DVD-rom (mapped drive D:) doesn't autoplay at all, when u remove the disc from the drive, the icon just stays there, but its empty. The only refresh as you reboot the computer. 2. The USB drive (mapped drive F:)doesn't show up at my computer. It'd detected by Adobe reader, and the USB is readable, but it just won't show up in "My Computer" also the list of choice to open the USB from autorun won't show up either. That's pretty gay.
What i did: 1. tried mapping drives 2. NOD32 result- virus count:0 unscannable count:4 3. Adaware SE personal: spyware count: 2 (cleaned) 4. ctrl+alt+del check the running stuff by Administrator seems nothing special
Autoplay was disabled by some antivirus program, I want to enable it again but it doesn't work. Both optical and virtual dvd drives have no autoplay. I tried tweakui, set all drives to enable autoplay, but it didn't work.

I have a problem with a laptop running XP pro SP2. Problem is, if I load a CD or DVD into the Drive they dont auto run they just spin up, and to launch I have to do it through explorer, Similarly with my Digital Camera, when I plug it in its supose to ask me what i want to do with the files but the same happens the Nikon program does not auto run, have tried the solutions mentioned here bon this board but still no go.

I went to Disk Cleanup up and deleted all Temp and Temp internet files, but the images are still there. I checked Properties of the images for the file names, went to Win Explorer, but only found C:Documents and Settingsuser, there was no subfolder for Local Settings and, obviously nothing after that. I did a Search in Explorer, including hidden files and folders, for the file names and the searches resulted in nothing. I am back to deleting one-by-one, but my concern is, Where did everything from Local Settings on go to. BTW, I also run Skybot, Adaware and Norton virus weekly

my Mom's computer is a HP Pavilion, she's using Windows XP (the original version and she hasn't updated from Microsoft since. when exactly did dinosaurs roam the earth? ) About two weeks ago, every time that she reboots it locks up the computer and you can hear the motor running constantly. When you go to shut it down a window comes up and asks for you to wait or end task, and the error is "Device10 Notification". The ONLY thing that she has put in recently is the HP 4 in 1 Copy/Scan/Print, but that was, at least, two weeks before the problem started. There is YET another error message that appears every once in a while, it's for HP Imaging Device, and you have to end task to get it to shut down, but this isn't a constant problem like the device10 is.

These are my own builds and if someone wants a new PC, the price of a genuine Windows OS is included in the price and they are given the disk. It is because of Microsofts asinine activation feature and the fact that I have 4 desktops and 2 laptops that I use the cracked copy. Anyways, my girlfriends dad's (a cop )laptop recently had a hard drive failure, and because he bought it with Windows preinstalled(no disk) he needed an OS. He didn't know any better and when I went over there last night to check on his laptop, up pops the MS genuine notification that has recently gone around.

View 7 Replies View Relatedfor a while when we first turn on our laptop it won't work, it is not responding. However, the windows task manager does not show anything not responding. My only way to fix this problem is to tell the computer to restart & I will then get a "not responding" message saying that "socket notification sink" is not responding. I tell it to end the program & restart & I sometimes have to go through this over & over & over again until the computer is responding. The biggest part of the problem is that I do not know what the heck "socket notification sink" is! And if I do a search for it nothing comes up & I don't see it in the programs in the control panel & I never see it on the "processes" tab of the windows task manager.Can anyone help? What is it, do I need it, how do I deal with this? I just need the frickin' computer to work when I turn it on, I don't have time for this some days!

View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't get any sound to play when new Outlook Express email arrives. I use XP Media Center 2005. There is a sound icon in front of, New Mail Notification, & the Chimes sound (which I chose) does play when I press the test button to the left of Browse. BUT, it does NOT play when new mail arrives and Outlook Express is open or minimized. All other program default sounds do play. Also, with Outlook Express open, I clicked on Tools, Options, General, and there IS a check mark in front of, Play Sound When New Message Arrives.Is there something else that I should do to make the Chimes sound play when new email arrives?

When I start my computer, I get the Loading Settings screen, which automatically switches to the Saving Settings screen and then goes back to Loading Settings, Saving Settings, etc, etc, (the "Windows XP Startup" and "Windows XP Shutdown" sounds repeat themselves one right after the other). By the way, I have the XP tweak that skips the Welcome and log on screens at startup since I'm the only person that uses the computer. I've tried Debugging, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Restore To Last Working Settings and a few others, but nothing is working. I ran Spybot just before shutting down the computer the last time it worked and got the "Congratulations! Your system contains no spyware" message. When I restarted the computer, I started having this problem. I also have Norton Anti Virus 2004 and did a Live Update (manually) a few hours before this started happening.
