When I right click on the desktop to change the background settings the only thing I can change is the background color, no pictures, cant browse for pictures or set any of the standard backgrounds as the desktop background. How is this disbaled and how can I enable it again?

But now I can see the background color, before the change the icons were translucent and blended in with the red moon theme. How can I change it back? Plus I have the computer set fot adjust for best appearance.

Initially, I was unable to access my task manager screen until I ran Windows onecare scan. it cleared up the virus but I still cannot get into my regedit (it states registry editing has been blocked by your adminstrator). I've tried to start in safe mode, but it just runs a bunch of scripts and stalls. I've also tried to start it in any other safe mode, and they do the same thing. I've tried the "last known good configuration" - I get the blank screen. Since I just replaced the hard drive 2 days ago (the old one crashed)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a file that I could not open in order to read (CompositeLabProWindows). I hastily went to properties in change the file to a messenger file. The file that open and I was able to read the file how ever, an order for the file to work properly I should have been left alone and not tampered with. The men how many times I download the program is still opens up in Windows messenger. My problem is that I need to restore it back to the way it was prior, and remove that the fault mechanism that all some unknown files open up the messenger.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get a computer to output the same thing to at least two seperate monitors. All I can seem to manage to do is get an extended desktop, which means I can drag things off of my screen onto the other monitor instead of displaying the same thing on both monitors which is what I am trying to do. When I uncheck the "Extend my windows desktop to this computer" on another display it disables the monitor, and when I enable the display it automatically checks it.
In this Compaq (I know Compaq sucks) computer I have 2 video cards. One onboard, and one PCI. The PCI video card has 2 outputs, the onboard has one. I have reached a point where in Windows XP I can output to 3 seperate monitors utilizing the extended desktop feature, which means I am outputting from the PCI video card and the onboard video card. In order to do this I used a microsoft work around in which you must disable hardware acceleration on each driver.
for some reason my screen saver does not come on and my screen does not turn off. for testing purposes i changed the screen saver to 1 min and changed the power setting for the lcd monitor to turn off after 2 min. i waited for like an hour but the lcd is still on and the screen saver has not come on. this is on a dell e1505 laptop. it worked before.

Of course without it she can't print. This has also happened occasionally when she opens an application, the spoolsv will hit 100%. Does anyone have any ideas? I need to get her printing again.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis all started when my computer was shutting down at random times when I was in windows...at first I thought it was my CPU because it was just shutting down when I was playing games... but I no longer think this because it started shutting down when I was just in windows.Anyway so my friend and I started working on it...we thought it was the mild overclock we put on a few weeks earlier. However, my temps were normal and it passed the stress tests we did on it through the BIOS...So we changed the settings back to stock. No luck.Problem not solved. In fact, now we can't stay in windows for more than a couple seconds before it re-boots.

Both children can access internet, but only 1 can access printer. I actually figured out the problem that's huge as I'm a network idiot. My son's computer (can't use printer) is using my old computer with MY name on it. I am on the new computer with MY name on it. So when he tries to access the printer it doesn't know where to go. I have windows xp HOME and from what I see I can't change the name on his computer the folder immediately under documents & settings). I followed instructions to copy from one folder to another (ie, Mine to his) using a 3rd administrator account. I could copy any account but mine.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently uninstalled what I thought were some unnecessary fonts on my XP SP2 notebook, but began having serious display problems in some apps and dialog boxes, the text being either much too small or large.I've trimmed the Fonts folder in the past with no problems, but this time I seem to have majorly screwed the pooch. Even after reinstalling all fonts, the problems persist.
View 2 Replies View Relatedthe problem is, my mouse and keyboard are not working in that OS, so i cant do a damn thing, so luckily i have another OS installed on the second partition (which is where im writing from right now) and i was thinking, maybe i can export that key, as a reg-file and then just click on it, fixing the whole issue. Bad thinking, because i have nothing to click it with, no mouse, no keyboard! And its saved, right there on the desktop!!!So to my question, is there any way to add that key to the other OS registry from this OS, or maybe is there a way to activate the export-file at startup or something? maybe with DOS?
View 14 Replies View RelatedAll my text/font display settings seem to have changed. I downloaded a freeware program today called avi2dvd, to convert avi video files to iso files for burning to DVD. I tried it out, got frustrated with it, and uninstalled it. After I uninstalled it, I went to check my email. That's when I first noticed that all the text in my yahoo email account had changed - it seemed smaller, like it was at a lower resolution.
I clicked on a few more pages and it was the same for all of them - the text was just not as...smooth. Not as readable. And definitely smaller. It's not just a font size thing, I'm not that much of a newbie, I tried enlarging the font and it's definitely a resolution thing, not just a font or size issue. Then I tried out some other programs, and found out that the problem was system-wide. I use a writing program called Final Draft, and the text in that is also less readable.I found one program that hadn't been affected: IE all my web pages display fine in Explorer.
my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. I removed it again, using instructions from Systematic Antivirus and now it's really gone. Some of the settings were still weird though. So after hours of searching the help topics on Microsoft I managed to fix 1 & 1/2 of the problems I had/have.
For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab. (I have Windows XP Professional, by the way.) I can't click inside of the background list and it's shaded a sort of brownish beige color. I also can't browse and do anything with the position setting. I can however access the customize desktop and color features
I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI found images in Windows Picture and Fax viewer that I want to delete. I can delete them one-by-one, but that takes time. I went to Disk Cleanup up and deleted all Temp and Temp internet files, but the images are still there. I checked Properties of the images for the file names, went to Win Explorer, but only found C:Documents and Settingsuser, there was no subfolder for Local Settings and, obviously nothing after that. I did a Search in Explorer, including hidden files and folders, for the file names and the searches resulted in nothing. I am back to deleting one-by-one, but my concern is, Where did everything from Local Settings on go to. BTW, I also run Skybot, Adaware and Norton virus weekly

I'm having a major problem with XP Home Edition. When I start my computer, I get the Loading Settings screen, which automatically switches to the Saving Settings screen and then goes back to Loading Settings, Saving Settings, etc, etc, (the "Windows XP Startup" and "Windows XP Shutdown" sounds repeat themselves one right after the other). By the way, I have the XP tweak that skips the Welcome and log on screens at startup since I'm the only person that uses the computer. I've tried Debugging, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Restore To Last Working Settings and a few others, but nothing is working. I ran Spybot just before shutting down the computer the last time it worked and got the "Congratulations! Your system contains no spyware" message. When I restarted the computer, I started having this problem. I also have Norton Anti Virus 2004 and did a Live Update (manually) a few hours before this started happening.

After several tries I got a copy of FASTconv, a command line program, to extract the files. It has been a long time since I used a command line and the command is complex. I have set the command follows........ fastconv /V /S:source store /D:destination store /T:temp store /I left out the /I switch so all files in the Dir source store would be extracted. Same thing happens when I put in /I switch.I named the Dir. source store, destination store and temp store. When I run it I get instructions on usage and a command prompt What am I missing?

It's the "shutdown" method I'm referring.Net Framework has created a very annoying "dropdown" menu option list when you want to restart, logoff, shutdown, etc., instead of the Windows XP simple 3-choice icon option which is in plain sight after you select Start/Turn Off Computer.
