He describes the symptoms as his internet connection keeps mysteriously dropping or disconnecting, and he randomly gets Blue Screens. I'm no real expert on computers, but he's had the 'downloader', 'fake alert' and 'taskdir' viruses lately, and i'm guessing that they could be what is causing it. He's tried tonnes of scanners and stuff, but none seem to get rid of them.....

I use wireless device which connects to my Desktop downstairs,which in turn connects to the router upstairs. So I've been randomly disconnecting when playing games like WoW, and CoH & losing connection on the internet as well. It can't be the router I assume since the laptop upstairs which connects to the same thing never disconnects. I have a D-Link router and a D-link gaming router which connects to the PC. Any help?

Now my network connection to my WRT54g v6 goes out about every 20 minutes or so. So I go into my network panel and repair the connection and eveything is fine for about another 20 minutes. I have tried 3 different routers all with the same result. I have also tried 2 different network cards. What in the world is wrong?

View 6 Replies View Relatedjust the other day my internet started disconnecting itself then my modem would dial another number after maybe 45 mins to an hour of being connected. i thought it might be a dialer so i scanned with norton antivirus, spybot search and destroy and adaware but not one seamed to find anything related to my problem. the thing that confuses me is that every time it makes a new connection in my network settings labeled with user followed by what i assume is a randomly generated number.

I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable.In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.
I got a Toshiba with windows XP.. Its an older laptop and runs slow.. which is fine for what i need it for.. It is connected through a Dlink Cable modem. Recently moved and had a DSL connection of 3 years no problems. Had to switch to cable broadband. The lights all light up solid no problem. Network cable connected to no problem. Unplug netowkr cable from cable modem (get the network cabled unplugged in windows, so it is seing the modem or atleast talking to it)Tried using the windows xp network srtup wizard. I did that hub one (connected thourhg a hub) and i tried the direct connection (goes from modem to computer).
Have noticed an odd little occurrence of late.I am sitting reading something on the net, my hands are not touching the mouse or the keyboard and suddenly the cursor/arrow starts moving horizontally all by itself? I have remote access turned off but wonder if this indicates a possible remote user incursion?
View 15 Replies View RelatedAfter long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to help a neighbor with his PC. Last night he started having a problem (just all of a sudden out-of-the-blue) with no apparent reason or self-inflicted cause. He said he had not done anything unusual on his PC, and had only replied to a few emails over the last couple of days from family members (which did not have any attachments). He is using IE7. Here is what happens: When he opens a browser page (his home page is the Charter Communication News home page for customers), as soon as it finishes downloading (within 2 seconds) the browser page just disappears...as if it was exited. All other aspects of his PC works fine.
Here is what I did: I ran his three virus protections (AVG, McAfee & Nortons) as well as Ad-Adware, which only found low risk items that were deleted. I cleaned up his files, cookies, etc. and defragmented his hard drive. After re-starting the PC the browser page stayed up a little longer (maybe 4-5 seconds)...probably because I had deleted the cookies and it just took longer to fully download......
I have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.

I’ve booted Windows several times and the hex addresses all stay the same. I’m thinking it might be useful to upload the memory dumps, but don’t know how to do this. I have made several small attempts to repair the system. Firstly I started the computer in safe mode and scanned the hard drive using AVG Free, which (surprisingly) found several Trojans and other viruses. This made no difference when starting the computer, so I pressed F8 again when Windows was starting and chose ‘Last Known Good Configuration’ which again made no difference. Finally I started the computer in ‘Safe mode with Command Prompt’ and ran ‘chkdsk’ which found no errors...........
this is opposite from those who try to piggy-back on a neighbor's wireless. I want to -stop- connecting to a neighbor. We have a wireless setup and just a couple days ago a neighbor apparently installed one. Zone Alarm popped up and told me about it. All was fine until I tried to download headers in my Agent newsreader and it told me I was connected on two computers. Low and behold my laptop had decided to switch to the neighbors wireless connection. How can I tell my laptop to only connect to our wireless router and stop latching onto the neighbor? The SSID's are different. I named ours Marconi (Cute huh?) and theirs is called "Default" (Yeah, they have not secured it). At the moment I just use MAC addressing to keep out casual snoopers and do not want to switch to WEP if it can be helped. Any settings I can do to make my wandering laptop stay home?

The dial-up modem (Motorola sm56 Speakerphone, Voice/Data/Fax)works well on Win ME without any disconnections, but it frequently disconnects from the line at will, on Win XP, particularly when there is a slight delay in receiving bytes. I've not found anything in configuration that should lead it to delink.

However, since the install i have been unable to establish a continuous connection. It starts and stops for no reason at all. I have been online and it loses connection saying there is no dial tone. It's been coming on slowly, but my connection to the internet, via internet explorer is extremely slow. I also experience long waits opeing new windows, or attachments from a site, as well as rply and fwd on E-mail. Once connected moving from site to site is normal speed, but as stated other openings take up to 2-3 minutes to connect. My ISP says my connection is fine, but I do get a connectivity icon on occasion, causing me to click repair, and it goes away.

I have my internet connected threw USB dirctly to my modem. Then i have my crossover cable plug into my Xbox and the other end in my ethernet port.. However when i went to view all network connections, there wasn't any connection icon there. SO, i created a new connection and the computer asked for a restart to complete the process.
