I had to reformat an old IBM Thinkpad,I used the on board way to do it.Since reinstalling XP I get the BSOD described above.It always reboots, does a disk check says all files are fine, then starts up.I have updated the bios, and video driver.When I try to do a windows update for sp2, the bsod comes back every time. Another driver problem?Should I be checking the RAM memory?I did not have this problem before I reinstalled XP.

It seems to run ok is safemode so I think it is software related. I have not reinstalled windows yet and prefer not to. Windows was reinstalled about 4 months ago. Also when I try to log into this site I get a message saying the admin must white list me but it then lets me post anyway.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy Compaq (XP HOME edition SP2) laptop is suddenly going through this whole physical memory dump complete thing. I turned it off just like normal this afternoon. Then tonight when I turned it on, it got to my desktop, seemed normal for less than 1 min, then went to the blue screen that includes the following technical Information:

Then it would reboot, do the same thing, over and over again.
So I googled on my husband's computer and learned about the minidump folder thing. Then I went and started my computer in safe mode and found the folder, but I couldn't read the minidump files. So I googled some more and learned about downloading the debugging tools which I did (on my hubby's computer). I transferred the debugging file to my safe mode computer tried to install and it wouldn't let me. SO silly me, I copied the dump files onto my hubby's computer, hoping to read them there. Then I realized that the debugging tools need more than just the dump file to actually read it, and it would require image path, symbols stuff. Well, now I am totally lost. What do I do?
At first, my hubby thought it was probably because he plugged in the webcam thing before my laptop finished starting...some post did say it would cause the BSOD problem, well, we unplugged our webcam and it still wouldn't work.

I have never found if there is a fixed time period that this happens. What I mean is I don't know if it happens after two, three, four hours. All I know is that when I get up in the morning the computer is back on.

All I need is a few hours, actually, because all I want is to get my stuff off the drive and be done with it...if we're able to do that, we'll probably subsequently give the machine away or sell it for cheap and let somebody else buy a copy of windows for it...so, if I were to re-install XP again, would it give me more time? Also, would there be a way to install the OS without formatting the whole drive (so that my files, pics, etc aren't written over)? If I were to install something like Windows ME, which I'm told doesn't need to be activated, could I retrieve my files THAT way? Or would it have to reformat the whole drive?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows XP SP2 seems to be working normally, when I click Shut Down the computer proceeds to turn off. Afterwards the harddrive powers-down, the fans stop running, etc. Then for no reason, the computer turns back on after a brief period of time off (varied: 1hr, 15min, 8 sec) as if someone pushed the power button.I did not install any new software, or update/added on new hardware when this problem started to happen. Because of a particular application, I decided that I didn't want to automatically switch back to standard time at 2:00 AM. I would do it manually later.So I unchecked the box on the server and all of my PCs on the 28th. When I got ready to make the manual change around 5:00 AM on the 29th, they were all already on standard time. Does this mean that the box only affects going to daylight savings time and that it will always revert to standard time?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did an AVG Rootkit scan which turned up "c:windows/system32/userinit.exe" as a dodgy file. I removed it and now the machine won't login when I boot the system. With a bit more digging it seems that this file was actually the login information within the registry and as it can't find a valid user/password it just keeps asking me click the user name and login. When I click it just loops back and throws back up the window, asking me to click the user name again.How I can access the registry and reset the userinit.exe file?I've tried selecting "last good configuration" which didn't work.I also tried to download Bart PE on another machine (running Vista) to set up a boot CD, but it wasn't particularly clear how to go about it, so I tried using the XP System Recovery app on the install disks. This got me into a C: prompt.

I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?

Specifically, DST will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November). View 3 Replies View Relatedi do scans quite a bit and delete alot of things everytime. there is the msn spyware thing that keeps coming back after i delete that, as well as many other things i dont even know about. some of my devices just shut them selves down from time to time (mouse, scanner/printer, and otherthings i cant remember but the key board is fine) and after a few seconds turn back on. and the whole thing just crashes sometimes. i did that scan thing but im not sure if i did it right.

My mouse/pointer is STILL freezing after about 5 minutes of being logged on. I am using the touchpad mouse that is on my laptop. When I click on the time on the bottom right hand corner, and under the Internet Time tab, I can't syncronize the time using both time.windows.com and nist.gov servers. View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever i insert a dvd into my dvd drive my pc freezes, and then bsod happens. It has only started happening yesterday and its the same result with all dvd's i have tried so far. If i cause the bsod to appear too many times my computer becomes totally unable to start up(it reboots at the welcome screen when windows is loading) and even safemode doesn't work. So basically i need help in fixing my dvd drive(i know it is the dvd drives fault because i ended up having to reformat and same error appears so i disconnected dvd drive for now.

I think I have a driver causing trouble on startup. Every 4th or 5th time I boot, I bet a BSOD and the machine restarts. Sometimes it does it even after PC has been on for a while. I can not find anything in common with any of these crashes and have NOT installed any new drivers or hardware.What would be the best way to determine what's causing the trouble?
