I use windows (home) XP system with SP2.Run an anti virus program (Avast 4.6) about two-three times a month. Use to take about 140 min looking through 304000 files. Ran it today, took 270 min (41/2hrs) and looked through 515140 files. It has been upgraded several times since I last ran it, however for something to take 41/2 hours seems a bit long. Just a home PC, not that many songs or data on it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has been having malware problems, and I want to shut down system restore and run Ewido in safe mode. My question is, when I shut down system restore, and then turn it back on when I'm done, does it kill all restore points? Will that be a problem? Can't I just create a new one if needed? And last, won't new ones be created automatically over time? I've never done this,so I would like to be sure before I do.I probably need to stay away from this before I make a bad situation worse. She does have Avast, Ewido, Spybot,CCleaner,and Spyware Blaster. The problem is, she doesn't update or run them.I updated everything she had and ran them and everything is much better, but still a little bit slow. I thought maybe running Ewido in safe mode might get some that might be hiding in system restore. Would like to know if this is safe to do Thanks......Maggie
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't know what's wrong with my computer. My computer was running slow then eventually froze up, so I unplugged it. When I plugged it back in, I used system restore and everything was working fine. The next day it started slowing down, then it froze up again. I used System Restore again to get it back to normal and I had to do this ridiculous ritual every day for the entire summer just to use my computer.When I look at the Task Manager bar, the meter is all green as if I have a lot of programs running, but I don't. The only application it says I have running is the Compaq Connections Agent, which comes on automatically when the computer start up.I've used all types of programs to fix this, like Norton Anti Virus, AVG Anti Virus, Dust Buster, Defrag, Ad-Aware, CCleaner, etc. Everything works fine at first, then about 24 hours later, the same thing happens all over again.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI went to use PerfectDisc yesterday, it suggested I do a bootup scan, I did, allowed it to do pagefile scan too. Ran fine. Then rebooted, went to do regular scan. it locked up on the Blue Screen of Death.
"Bad_Pool_Header" and gave some error info... 0x00000019, and so on.
Computer runs fine though otherwise, which is funny.
Then when I try to go to Registry Mechanic and scan, it goes all the way through, and on I believe the deepscan, it always goes to BSOD there. I think while it's in the HKEY section of current user.
There may be other programs that will cause the BSOD, but these 2 are the only ones so far. Please guide me through this....Anyone.
I did a virus scan using Avira Antivir. There were no viruses on the computer bit it said there were 53 warnings which are as follows:

I am trying to decide to use either Grisoft's AVG AntiVirus (Free version) or
AVAST AntiVirus. Which of these two are better?
I had Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional on my system, but Symantec refuses
to reactivate it. I had a computer replaced (case/power supply, motherboard,
and UPS) due to a lightning strike and now I cannot reactivate or use Norton
AntiVirus 2004.
I use V-Com Fix It as my suite to handle system maintenance including antivirus protection. When I try to run a scan, it goes through memory scan fine and starts working on the actual files. At some point it chokes on a file and the system starts acting strangely. The icons in the taskbar either disappear or duplicate, but when I run the cursor over them they usually disappear. If I try to launch a program I'm given various error messages like it's a bad image or not a valid system 32 file. The only solution is to reboot and that can usually only be accomplished by hitting the reset button on the case. (After posting this message, I'm going to do it again and post more of the messages I get) My CounterSpy programs scans fine, with no suspicious problems. I got Karsperky's online virus scanner to run and it didn't find anything suspicious either.
I think the problem surfaced shortly after installing .NET Framework, but I'm not sure that's the problem. I've tried uninstalling .NET Framework, re-installing version 2.0, but the same problem occurs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Fix It. I've tried using MSCONFIG to do a diagnostic boot with no mandatory service running, but still had the problem. The problem has also happened on its own without the virus scanner running. The autofile scan was probably running in the background though. The PC had been sitting for a few hours.I REALLY don't want to do a complete reinstall of XP if I don't have to. So, I'm hoping somebody here can come up with some other stuff to try.I'm running XP SP2, Fix It 7, CounterSpy 2, Kerio Personal Firewall.
What is the read on Avast Antiviris? Any thoughts? The tech guy at Dell says its better than Norton or McaFee? and its free to download Reason I'm asking is because my McaFee has expired. Need something new..Dell Demension 3000 Windows XP

I just performed a full system scan on my computer using AVG Spyware. The process (doing nothing else and having no other programs running) took 35 minutes and scanned 245,000 + "objects". My question is simple, and may leave me looking foolish, but I have to ask...is it "normal" for a computer used by only 2 people for only 3 months to have that many "objects"?

View 14 Replies View RelatedAbout temporary internet files, I regularly delete them by going to tools>internet options>general>delete temp files, but I noticed that when I run either my virus scan or my adware scan, it scans the temporay internet files for close to 2 hours, how can there be so many if I regularly delete them? I noticed the files it scans for so long are .IE5. Searching through the net I read that by going to tools, not all files are deleted, namely some index.dat files, and that it's hard to get rid of them. I read about a program, Mil Shield, that deletes them but haven't tried it yet.My main problem is that whenever I scan my comp, it takes hours to scan because of the temp files. Can anyone advise on how to solve this issue? Is it good to delete index.dat files or would that cause problems?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy computer had been running fine, but I was using Mcafee and I hated it, so I uninstalled it. Without having any antivirus software to replace it with right away. So, about a week later (aka today), my dad was helping me install a new printer when everything went crazy. It was taking forever for my computer to boot up, and then after it was 'ready' it was incredibly slow. Then it would go to a blue screen with some text on it (I wish I had written down what it said, but I didn't-something about an infection detected) and we would shut it down manually. Finally, we were able to restore the computer to an earlier date. The printer is no longer installed, but I think I still have a virus.
I just installed avast, which during a reboot it did a scan where I had lots of infected files, and several options as to what to do with them. A few of them were temporary internet files, and not thinking, I hit delete. I realized this was a bad idea, and for the infected files after that, I selected "move to chest."
I'm not sure where to go from here. A lot of them are c:system volume information\_restore... which might have something to do with why my speakers aren't working.

View 6 Replies View RelatedFor some strange reason my Start Menu items/shortcuts have been deleted (in both my Documents & Settings folder and 'All Users'), except for a blank shortcut (no name, no link) with the 'My Computer' icon. The weird thing is the Start Menu folders and their contents are in tact.Initially I thought I accidentally deleted them so I manually created a few shortcuts back to some of programs, but after restarting Windows, they were gone again and only that mysterious blank shortcut appeared again!I did a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus 2007 and AVG Anti-Spyware and they didn't find anything.

View 6 Replies View RelatedPc crashes the internet all the time, he is working on a ACER Laptop,everyone else gets internet just fine, it is his laptop that won't get it all the time, and when he does get it, it sometimes only lasts for up most to about 3 to 4 hours. if he is that lucky.could this be an internal problem? or could a file have been corrupted somewhere in the system?right now he is running a disk scan to see if it picks up anything but i don't think it will.
