What is the read on Avast Antiviris? Any thoughts? The tech guy at Dell says its better than Norton or McaFee? and its free to download Reason I'm asking is because my McaFee has expired. Need something new..Dell Demension 3000 Windows XP

I had Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional on my system, but Symantec refuses
to reactivate it. I had a computer replaced (case/power supply, motherboard,
and UPS) due to a lightning strike and now I cannot reactivate or use Norton
AntiVirus 2004.
My computer had been running fine, but I was using Mcafee and I hated it, so I uninstalled it. Without having any antivirus software to replace it with right away. So, about a week later (aka today), my dad was helping me install a new printer when everything went crazy. It was taking forever for my computer to boot up, and then after it was 'ready' it was incredibly slow. Then it would go to a blue screen with some text on it (I wish I had written down what it said, but I didn't-something about an infection detected) and we would shut it down manually. Finally, we were able to restore the computer to an earlier date. The printer is no longer installed, but I think I still have a virus.
I just installed avast, which during a reboot it did a scan where I had lots of infected files, and several options as to what to do with them. A few of them were temporary internet files, and not thinking, I hit delete. I realized this was a bad idea, and for the infected files after that, I selected "move to chest."
I'm not sure where to go from here. A lot of them are c:system volume information\_restore... which might have something to do with why my speakers aren't working.

Ran it today, took 270 min (41/2hrs) and looked through 515140 files. It has been upgraded several times since I last ran it, however for something to take 41/2 hours seems a bit long. Just a home PC, not that many songs or data on it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has been having malware problems, and I want to shut down system restore and run Ewido in safe mode. My question is, when I shut down system restore, and then turn it back on when I'm done, does it kill all restore points? Will that be a problem? Can't I just create a new one if needed? And last, won't new ones be created automatically over time? I've never done this,so I would like to be sure before I do.I probably need to stay away from this before I make a bad situation worse. She does have Avast, Ewido, Spybot,CCleaner,and Spyware Blaster. The problem is, she doesn't update or run them.I updated everything she had and ran them and everything is much better, but still a little bit slow. I thought maybe running Ewido in safe mode might get some that might be hiding in system restore. Would like to know if this is safe to do Thanks......Maggie

I had to reformat and reload one of my computers yesterday with windows XP and then proceeded to set up the networking. I will call the windows computers A, B and C. I reformatted A. Having run the networking wizard I can now from A read C but not B. B will not let A or C in. I need permission from the administrater. There is no administrater on any computer. C can read A but not B. B can read A and C. Does anybody know what is going on?

The CD burner will burn data to a 70 min/800 MB CD (and that CD can be read with no problems on other computers), but neither the CD-Rom nor the CD burner will read any 80 min/700 MB CD, even the ones it burned itself. The CD Burner is a Mitsumi CR-4804TE drive, using driver version 5.1.2535.0 (7/1/01), the latest update I can find. Mitsumi has more recent updates, but they do not list WinXP as one of the OS.Not sure of the make of the CD-Rom, WinXp lists it as HL-DT-ST CD-Rom GCR-8483B (same driver as the CD Burner).Is there a general WinXP patch that will enable me to read these CDs? Will the Mitsumi driver work on WinXP Pro?

I thought it might just need to be cleaned so I went and bought a cleaner. I tried it and now it won't do anything. I bought a brand new CD and it won't even read it at all. 1. The main problem is if I insert a known good CD, when I open the drive which is the D drive in this case it shows no contents. If I take the same CD to another computer and open it I see folders, files, etc.
2. I can write to the drive on a CDR or CDRW fine using Nero.
3. I can boot from the drive using an Ubuntu or other boot disk.
I have a 4GB SD card for my digital camera and when I insert it into the card reader on my laptop it doesn't even show up as being read. I know my card read works because it picks up my sisters card from her camera.I am getting sick of having to whip out the cable and do it that way.If anyone has any advice please share it.

It faulted on an error stating that it couldn't create files in the Temp directory and that I should check to see if it was marked Read Only. I found that the entire drive is marked Read Only. When I went to Properties and tried to reset it to normal it went right back to Read Only. I was able to create a new Adminstrator User on my PC to get around the problem, but that means all my user settings are lost. It appears that I have lost administrative rights to the drive. All my other apps seem to work fine. How do I correct the problem without loosing my current user configurations. Why doesn't Windows XP allow one to copy or save a user configuration?

finished the install (34 minutes left) when the computer turned itself off.
This happened several times. I removed the hard drive and reformatted it -
cleaned it off, then reinstalled it. Now when the PC boots up it recognizes
the CD Rom drivs but it will not boot or install from the CD ROM drive. I
created the 6 diskettes to tell the PC to install from the CD Rom drive, and
it gives me an I/O error. The BIOS says to boot off the CD ROM drive but it

There is one option for me to select which reads "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu."I've done a check disk of all of my hard drives, and none of them turned up anything. So I load in the Windows XP Home disk and boot from the CD. I go to repair and recovery and the console opens up. I run chkdsk and it stop at 13%. Any suggestions. Is the hard drive done? I have backups, I'm just wondering if it's time for a new hard drive.
