Are You Sure You Want To Delete WINDOWS?
May 18, 2006
When I attempt to empty the XP (Home edition, SP2) recycle bin I get the following error: "Are you sure you want to delete 'WINDOWS'?". If I click YES, another error message appears: "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disc". Apparently this "WINDOWS" file is invisible as it cannot actually be seen in the bin. Any other files in the bin are properly deleted. I'm sure I don't have any virus or malware problems.

I have a very large, corrupt disc image on my hard drive that I want to delete, but every time I try to delete it Windows displays the message "Cannot delete 'filename': it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The disc image is not mounted with any program, and hasn't been for some time. I tried aborting random processes that I thought might have something to do with the file, as well as restarting. No matter what I do, there seems to be something using the file. Are there any tricks to getting around this so I can delete it? Can I check, somehow, to see what program is using it?

I have Widows XP Home installed on my computer right now and I want to up-grade it to Windows XP Professional. The problem I am having is the home addition that is in-stalled on my computer right now was installed using a retail disc that incuded SP2. I have a older up-grade copy of Professional but It does not have SP2 included on it. Is there any way I can delete SP2 that is on my Home edition right now so I can up-drade it to Professional and then I can download the SP2.

I run Windows XP. When I initially got my computer, it was shared by several different people, and I set it up with several different users. Now I am the only one who uses this computer, and I'd like to delete the other users. When I try to delete the other users by going through the control panel and following the instructions, everything is fine until I get to the actual "delete this user". When I click on it, it pauses, and nothing happens. When I hit cntrl-alt-del, I get a message that mhsta.exe is not responding. I have googled this, but I am at a loss as how to how to fix this. I have restarted the computer several times (for other reasons), but I am still not able to delete the other users.

I bought a new computer with a new hard drive and had the technician transfer files from my old hardrive over to the new one. Now I have my old Windows folder from before on there now and I wan to get rid of it. Problem is, it won't let me delete some of the files.
It says that the files are in use, but that is not so because it's an old Windows directory. How do I delete files like DLL's which don't want to be deleted and aren't being used?

I am having problems deleting some Windows Temp Files. There are three that absolutely will not delete even when I cold boot or using the search feature and trying to delete them that way. ( sometimes that has worked for me in the past).
.
The three files are Jet8B96.tmp, Jet9829.tmp and ZLT04e0c.tmp.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them? I am comfortable with using DOS if necessary. And oh yes, ran Ad-Aware, and AVG and cleaned out registry as well.

while running a scan with ad-aware it seemed to trigger an alert from norton antivirus(i know) that a virus had been detected, the ad-aware scan came up clean as did a spybot scan but im still left with the virus which is a trojan horse called c:/windows/system32/test3adll, now im not exactly sure what the best course of action should be, would i be right in entering the file details in the search bar of the start menu, making a floppy of the file just in case its needed for some other purpose, switching off system restore while i delete it and immediately switching system restore back on, any advice/help in dealing with this problem will be much appreciated

When I start up whether in SAFE Mode or Normal I automatically get the Confirm Delete Message. This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc - I cannot get to any of my work to back it up. I have tried Stinger -F-Force and W32.Blackmal@mm Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again. There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.

I am attempting to clean out my temp files on my Windows XP Home. The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.

I want to install a new primary hard drive and reinstall windows xp from scratch on the new c: drive. For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

I went to try to install windows xp onto a computer that already had windows on it. I did not boot from the cd. To do it without using the cd it has to copy the installation files to the computer and then run them. When setup does this it creates a new choice of an operating system to boot from called "Windows XP Setup." So now I have a Windows XP and a Windows XP setup. I've been in msconfig and looked at boot.ini but that didn't help

The only computer that can see shared files is my moms with the windows 2000. theres 3 more computers all running windows xp. how do i fix this? File sharing is now available, but I myself believe the internet is being slowed down. THe Internet gateway that windows XP is picking up is reading 8.0 mbps. My connection has gotten as high as like almost 2, but it should not read that.
