I recently did a system recovery on my desktop (HP pavilion 504n - window xp home edition). After the recovery, I manage to get all my files in "My Documents" but many programs were delete. However, my c-drive free space remained the same as before the recovery.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to do a System Recovery to restore my system back to its factory settings (I'm using WinXP Home). When I hit F10 upon startup in order to access the system recovery, nothing happens- it boots as it would regularly. I was able to boot up using the CD, and am now in the System Recovery console. Might anyone tell me what I need to do to perform a non-destructive, or even a destrucitve system recovery?

Anyhow, since then, the mouse refuses to work. I can always reboot...till the cows come home; but I'm unable to click on any icon on the desktop because the mouse appears stuck in one postion.

Whenever I open up a messenger it hangs and then freezes. I ran my spybot detector and there were a few things but I got rid of them. My virus scan was clear and I also ran my disk defragmenter. I'm not sure if I got a virus somehow. I deleted all my cookies and files.

I booted it up with the XP disk in the CD drive, and thought I was telling it to delete the existing partition and create a new one on the C: drive, but I didn't realize that it was also recognizing the external drive, which was already plugged into a USB port (why I even went ahead and plugged it in I don't know - that was stupid mistake It was the first one listed, and I thought it was telling me that there were two partitions on the internal drive, not two drives I also didn't pay attention to the size it was telling me the drive was (stupid mistake #2), I just told it to create a partition with the maximum possible size
View 4 Replies View RelatedHad problems with virus, couldnt update Virus or Malware Protection. I did full shred System Recovery from partition ( HP- A1130N -Windows Media Edition- Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Dowloaded AVG Virus and ran scan, all OK.Went to MS Dowload center and downloaded and installed 87updates to include IE8,started computer, all OK. Then updater said needed to download SVC Pack 3- took a loooooooooooooong time. THEN COMPUTER WOULDNT START- tried the two options it gave me but no go back to same black screen with boot options-- regualar- last working point- safe mode etc. no go.
At this point I did a full System Recovery again and downloaded virus protection again.
I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI recently found out that a pirated copy of windows was installed on my machine so I went and bought a new copy of XP to install and get my maching running right.
My hardrive has 2 partitions. One for windows and the other for my files. My problem is that I go through the steps to do the reinstall and I get to the part to delete the partition where XP is located. As soon as I hit delete the computer immediately cuts off. I have tried it several times with the same result.
It never even asks to confirm the delete. It just shuts down like the computer was unplugged a;; pf a sudden.
If a system file was acidently deleted, etc, can this file be replaced from a backup if I had previously performed a backup of all the windows/system files to another hard drive.This would be done using the xp backup tool that comes with windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe files were deleted (and Norton Protected recycle bin emptied) from both the C: (boot drive/OS) and D: drives and when I tried to run System Restore, it gave me an error message, so I assume some of the system files may have been deleted as well. I am not the primary user of this computer and while the computer was functioning after I discovered this, I made the mistake of re-booting the computer and now get a ''NTLDR is missing - press Ctrl + Alt + Delete'' at boot. I have the Sony System recovery discs (no Windows XP disc that I can find) but I don't want to lose any more data and I would still like to try and recover the previously deleted files.

Not only did the SRU not solve the problem, but I could then not use the system restore facility which may have solved the problem . I have downloaded nothing but an Ad-Aware update since I lost all my system restore points.Can these deleted system restore points be recovered?

View 9 Replies View RelatedOk I have run into a major problem. First of all I entered 256 DIMM RAM into my motherboard recently and when I booted up, It said "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
/Windows/System32/Config/System
I tried taking the RAM out and the same happens. One source said it could be the PSU, power, but this is doubtful because I unplugged all the extra stuff I could but the same happens.
Taking advice from another source, I took my XP Disc and Booted from it in hope to repair missing/corrupt files. This did no good, It deleted the "corrupt" files, and couldn't find the same files (such as dplayx.dll, dosx.exe. dos869.fon, dmdskmgr.dll, etc.) So now I think these files are gone so when I tried to boot up after this it restarts or shuts down when it reaches the Windows XP loading screen. I tried booting from the CD once again but this time an error message appeared saying:
It takes 10 minutes to reboot my computer! 10 minutes later I m cleaning out temp files and cookies and the like, deleting old profiles, cleaning up MSConfig and Defragging AND moving anything that looks important out to his network share.

The computer was running sluggish so I went back to a later restore date. When the computer came back up after restore only my husband and my profile were shown. while signing into my profile i get the following error message:

what do i do to get this back? There are no icons or start menue on my deskdop just my background. I can view files if i go to task manager but nothing else can be done. I know very little about computers and I need help very stressed. My kids need a computer for school.
My Dell Inspiron B130 Windows Xp SP3 had only one internal hard drive, it was broken up into Drive C and two nameless partions that I did not make I accidentley deleted one of the namless partitions and now my windows XP SP3 laptop is no longer bootable. My computer just says no bootable drive found. I think I deleated some important system data My personal data on Drive C appears to be still there is there any way I can recover the system data or make my laptop bootable again without losing all of my data?

I am able to get onto the internet with exlporer through other programs on my computer, but the main explorer icon is missing from my desktop and startup toolbar on the bottom left of my screen. I have talked to HP tech twice and 1 told me I need to buy a special automated recovery cd from them. The other said not to do that and I need to use the two cds I have (1. operating system cd, 2. 1)I put in the operating system cd and shut down the computer.
2) I started it back up useing the cd (by hitting any button when it asks).
3) I press Enter on the next menu to "set up windows xp now"
4) I press F8 to agree to license agreement
5) I press ESC "to continue installing afresh copy of windows xp without repairing". Below it has the following highlighted "C:windows "microsoft windows xp professional"
