2000 Explorer Won't Explore
Sep 4, 2005
I was innocently going through the paces on my Windows 2000 machine, when suddenly it wouldn't allow me to open my desktop folders. I'd been using the computer to play music through iTunes for about three hours before it acted up.If I move the cursor on top of any icon on my desktop it will not open or move. Rebooting hard and hot don't change it. Trying to get into files through the task bar doesn't work. I can start Word and Word can see my files and folders, but can't manipulate or transfer them.

Im booting from disk as my laptop wont let me do anything, problems with explorer.exe is not allowing me to load windows properly.
It is randomly at anytime during the boot from disk turning it's self off, it is connected to main so its not a battery problem as i first thought.
The furthest i got when formatting was 98% then it turned its self off. I tried doing this about 10 times and at any random point it turns off.

when i double click on "My Computer" in the desktop it opens with the "folders" part open on the standard buttons i.e its just like right clicking and exploring. plus i also realised that right clicking on my computer has the explore option first, and then comes open. And also, when i double click on any of my drives in the "my computer" it pops up an error, and the right click option is again wierd, but different this time, the 1st option is autoplay, then comes open, then search then explore. The drive doesnt open with "open" and "autoplay" but only opens with exploring and not only , but the drive opens in a new window.

I am the admin for our home computer.I used to be able to Explore all the other user's Internet Temporary folders just to monitor my kids viewing habits.not nosy, just trying to be a good parent. For some reason, this ability has disappeared.I'd go into the user's Local Settings and there would be a folder that said Temp Internet and I could pull up thumbnails on about 5 different folders with long cryptic names. Did something get turned off or switched? I'm running Windows XP and I used to be able to do this on this same outer.

I image edited some photos and gave them a slightly different file name. However, in Windows Explore, when viewing the thumbnails, those edited pictures show up as if they weren't edited. Why? Is there any way to make Windows Explore show the edited version of the photos when viewing via thumbnails?

Am I right in thinking that they are both pretty similar except that server has support for multiple processors and extra network related tools and facilities. The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? As a bit of background information: I work for a small company which supplies temperature monitoring equipment which needs to be networked. I've been told that it has been tested on Windows 2000 server but not on Window 2000 professional.

This problem started awhile back, I reformatted and still have the same problem. I can't get any Windows updates through firefox and IE refuses to open. I have reset my activex controls, ran AVG and Adaware. Nothing comes up. My ISP is wmconnect which just recently changed to Netscape connect. they have no technical support for this problem. If anyone has any ideas. My OS is Windows 2000 Pro.

My pc is so slow that it takes ages to play a song in wmp11. Ive used tools like ad-aware and registry mechanic, tune up utilities. But still no improvement. It used to be just fine, until I installed some pay-for-viewing add program. I have uninstalled it since then, but the slowness remains. And the processor is hogged, at the highest level, even though i killed many a startup processes.

Hard drive crash, transplanted HD to new computer which now has 2 hard drives, C & D. Problem is I cannot open Windows Explorer from desktop or any other location, from either drive. I get a message that says it "generates errors." And that it is keeping a log, presumably for use on some Day of Judgment. (I get around it for now by right-clicking My Computer and picking Explore from the pop-up menu.)I have gone to the usual download sites in search of WE, no dice.

I have a computer with Windows 2000 Pro on it and I wanted to upgrade it to Windows XP Pro using an unused Windows XP Pro CD/license (Version 2002, it says) I have. However, when I stuck in the CD and selected "Install XP Pro," it told me "Windows XP Setup does not support upgrading from Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional to Microsoft Windows XP Professional."
So it will only let me do a clean install. Is this because I have an OEM CD meant for a new computer? I thought you could upgrade (rather than re-install) to XP from any genuine XP CD?

I'm going to upgrade from 2000 to XP w/SP3 and was wondering about "backing up files". I don't really have much, but I'm mostly concerned about program files (I can't remember which ones I've installed myself)...
I'm also considering "unpartitioning" and starting over because I bought the pc "used" and it has partitions all over the place.

I need to upgrade over 200 PC from 2000 to XP. Some are desktops and some are laptops. I need to do it with very little input from the users. I was thinking of using a email sent out that would ask them to do it at lunch or other sometime. I figure that it will take at least an hour to do the install etc, with no error. I plan on a test group to start with before I roll it out company wide.

I have an HP Lap top with Windows 2000 Pro on it. When booting up, the computer will go through all its normal start-up procedures. When it comes time for the Username/Password, I put them in, I hear the wave sound for windows loading, and then it freezes! The hour glass cursor remains on the screen and moves, only NOTHING happens from there on.
However,I can get it to boot normally after this by shutting it down.... then going into the Bios Set-up screen.....Change NOTHING & simply exit out of the Bios Set-up......THEN it will start normally and bring up the Desktop! BUT....if I shut it down again, It will freeze right after the Log-in just like before. Im tired of always having to go into the Bios to get this darn thing to work

I have a problem with Windows 2000. For some reason it won't load up. It gets to the login and loading prefrerences boxes, but after that there's just a blue screen. I've tried booting in safe mode. That just leads me to a black screen with "safe mode" in the four corners. I tried booting in the last known good configuration and it goes through the same process only now a message pops up in symbols. Also, when I hit [ctrl][alt][delete] everything is clickable except for task manager. That was also the case the last time I was in windows. I have absolutely no Idea what to do.
