16 Bit Subsystem Query When Running Older Programs

Jul 9, 2005

When I attempt to run older programs not specifically made for windows XP I have recently started receiving the following error when I try to install:16 bit Windows Subsystem c:WindowsSystem32autoexec.nt. This system file is not suitable for running MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Then there are 2 buttons, one says 'close' the other 'ignore'. Both terminate the installation or the running of the program. I don't think it is an issue with the games, as there is at least one I could run before but cannot run now.

I have re-installed it several times to see if that was the issue. Every time I start the computer everything works fast until it gets to the Windows splash logo loading screen. It sits there for about 45 to 50 seconds every time. I have done some research and one forum said that this may happen because of a missing file or corrupted file in windows and for me to check my Device Manager. I went through all those steps and everything seems to be ok. I have reinstalled many times and it still does

Getting Older Programs To Work Under OS

Aug 12, 2002

straight outa the help, thought some people might find it usefullTo set the compatibility properties for a program manuallyRight-click the program icon on your desktop or the shortcut on the Start menu for the program you want to run, and then click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, and change the compatibility settings for your program. NotesThe Compatibility tab is only available for programs installed on your hard drive. Although you can run the Program Compatibility Wizard on programs or setup files on a CD-ROM or floppy disk, your changes will not remain in effect after you close the program.

Running Old 16-bit Programs In Win XP-SP3

Nov 13, 2008

Played the game with no problems until recently. The computer's OS was a mess, so I destroyed the C: partition, reinstalled Win XP and updated it to SP-3, reloaded all the programs and restored her backed-up working files. The computer now runs like a screamin' mini, with no OS problems -- save one. Can't even run setup.exe to install it. After ending that attempt and removing the CD, Task Manager still shows setup.exe and wowexec.exe running. When I 'end task', I get "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. Win 16 bit subsystems may be unstable." tried to lead my friend through the Program Compatibility Wizard, but it still does not run.
