On my 100GB Windows C drive:-
1. The built-in Windows 8.1 optimiser showed 0%
2. Defraggler showed 9%
3. Powersuite showed 31%
4. Perfect Disk showed File fragmentation: 0.1% Free Space fragmentation: 7.9%
I was scanning my laptop running an AVG Anti-Virus scan last weekend and decided upon my stupid self that I should also download AVG PC Tune-up as well and wanted to repair my driver.
So, I did. Tried and failed.
On the start up of my laptop, the percentage ended up freezing up to 12% two times in a row (it would stay like that for 2 hours tops) and I restarted my laptop two times, only for it to keep on trying to repair my driver.
The stupidest thing that I did was I refreshed my PC, and it ended up erasing all of my precious files, including my drawings, bookmarks on Firefox and a lot of other things that are very dear to me. I had to updated Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 again, thinking that maybe I’ll be able to get my files back somehow.
But it didn’t work.
Now when I open programs that I newly installed, they don’t want to open? And now my laptop is acting very buggy and I’m worried that it might be completely damaged.
All I want is to get all of my files, programs, bookmarks, digital drawings, back. I want my laptop back to the way it used to be before I messed everything up.
My laptop is a Gateway NE56R27u (Windows 8).
Additional information: The weirdest part is that my background stayed the same, Skype pictures stayed (in a hidden file, what the heck?), my drawings managed to stay as well.
I am new to Windows 8, which I am using with a non-touch screen so I am dependent on the mouse for controlling actions. The Start Screen has enough items on it to require me to scroll across to see them all, even when grouped. I would like to be able to have a second (lower level) screen which opens when I click on an item in the main Start Screen. For example, Microsoft Office has about 8 programs within it (Word, Excel, etc) and at present these are all separate items on my Start Screen. Is it possible to have just one tile on the Start Screen (labelled MS Office) which, when clicked, leads to another screen on which the eight programs appear?
Alternatively, (and this perhaps should be a separate thread) is it possible to have separate icons for these programs on the Desktop (but not in the Taskbar). I noticed that some programs which I installed appear on both the Start Screen and the Desktop, while others only appear on the Start Screen.
Everytime I depressed the volume up/down key on my keyboard, it raises the volume in windows by 6%. Is there anyway to modify this? For example I would like the volume to rise or lower by only 3% everytime I depress the volume control button on my keyboard. I have messed around with the settings and can't figure out how to make this work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy new laptop seems hardwired to think that if I set the volume to 20, so long as I have headphones in, I want my volume at 20 for all sounds, ever. This makes music which varies from quiet and loud feel extremely alien and even ruins the feel of some videos and games. But it's most notable when watching a youtube video and I change the volume. Turning it up makes the video louder for a split second before returning to what it was, turning it down? Well, that works for a few seconds and returns to being too loud.
My new laptop uses HP Beats Audio. While I'm currently blaming Windows 8 for this problem, it'd be silly not to mention it. Unfortunately, a google search didn't get me any answer for beats either except how to uninstall it.
This doesn't happen on my old Laptop, which runs Windows 7 and appears to lack a special audio device. Looking online for a fix has only returned me nonsense about Windows 8 reducing volume for communications devices (a feature which I have off). In my search, I found this bit of information from Winsupersite.com:
"Incidentally, Windows 8 new Metro-style volume controls lack many of the more sophisticated controls that are available via the desktop. There's no way to control the volume of individual Metro-style apps, for example, and that's true of both the new Metro volume controls and the legacy desktop interfaces. Instead, the system automatically controls app volume, muting or lowering the volume of background apps when needed."
So... I suppose in short what I need to know is, how do I turn this "feature" off?
I recently installed a windows 8.1 for my client and because of her eye magnifier is been utilized a lot, but my problem is when you zoom to 250 the icons and letters are all fuzzy and she doesn't like it. I have tried all my troubleshoot techniques(cleartxt, screen resolution, uninstal/reinstal monitor driver and graphic drivers ) but these seems not to work for my ,i brought the monitor home and I put with my computer it looked better but my clients looks worse when I returned it.

I just noticed that pinch to zoom is no longer working via the touchpad. I came to rely on this feature quite a bit when running Windows 7. There are no issues in device manager, but under Mice it shows PS/2 compatible mouse instead of Synaptics touchpad. How to correct this and get my pinch to zoom back.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo my question is about how to change an icon in Windows 8. All I've really seen is how to change icons of folders, and icons of file types, but is it possible to change a single file's icon?
For example, let's say I have a recorded .mp3. I want to change that .mp3's icon to something different than just the normal .mp3 icon one of these guys. Is it possible to change only the icon of one specific file?
Why does windows 8 require me to back after I change or delete a file and then go forward to see the changes I made? Should not the change be seen right away? without going back and forward?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently had to update my brother-inlaw's new laptop to the 8.1 version. He doesn't use email so when I was prompted to enter an email address when you installed he update, I just put in a random email address and password not knowing I'd need that info to sign into the laptop every time you turned it on. Once I finished the install, I didn't restart it to check to see what it would do. Now he tells me when the laptop starts up, it wants the password for the account I entered when I put in the random account during install. He tells me you cannot change the user name (email address) so I'm at a loss here on what to do to get him logged onto his laptop. Is there something I can do to get that info changed or at least get him logged into the computer so that info can be changed? I have created a new email for him to use but it does no good when I can't even get into the computer.
