I installed an OEM version of Windows 8 on a formatted, Active Primary partition on an external HDD. After approx 3 minutes into windows my screen went black. I had to hold down the power button to exit. Trying to boot back into Windows8 from the boot menu, Windows attempted to start with the circle going around, but again a few seconds later, black.
These are some of the solutions I have tried but to no avail:
...Tried a different partition on the same physical external HDD. (Note: previously I had created an additional partition on my computer's C: and installed.) Black.
...Updated Video Drivers
...Checked if the drive was activated (SLMGR.VBS /DLV, then /ATO (Activated)
...Did first, a "Refresh then a Reset (both took me into windows but a short time later, black)
...While Black I tried a Ctrl, Alt, Del attempting to get to the task manager, which did not work, thinking I could try an inline install from the DVD.
...Booted into Windows 8 Safe Mode (F8 from Windows 8 boot option).... this was ok. It kept me in Windows.
When reverting back to Window7, the File System on ALL drive partitions, Computer's C and all externals, had to be checked for consistency before Windows 7 would boot up. Not sure why but once my screen goes black in Windows 8 somehow all my other partitions, Computer and Externals, are compromised.

No it's not the problem where I have a black screen after the reboot of the installation of windows 8.1.
I have the upgrade already but when i leave my laptop on after a few hours the screen turns black and it won't respond.
I have to hard reset it every time it does this because the keyboard and mouse wont make the black screen go away.
I tried searching for a solution but all of them were about the black screen after installation.

I'm having WIndows 8 Pro N, I encountered some issue here that Windows will boot into black screen quite sometime.
The moment when I tried to perform a restart or switch on my laptop, I could see the Windows 8 logo and then the screen just turned black. CTRL ALT DEL doesn't work and what I have to do is perform forced shut down.
After I switched it on again, everything just worked fine. The frequency of having the problem is 50%.

I loaded Windows 8 x64 about a week ago, it has booted fine every day until this morning. Instead of the loading windows logo its just a black screen that never does anything, I tried safe mode but F8 does nothing. What would cause this? It loaded just fine about 10 times, the only problem I had was with the installation I had to disable the hyper-threading to install the 64-bit version.

I will just be generally using my laptop browsing the internet or using programs such as photoshop and my system will freeze up for about 10 seconds and then will turn to a black screen forcing me to shut the system down via the power button. This happens at least once a day and most commonly occurs when opening photoshop. My laptop is a Packard bell EasyNote TE69KB.

I've got Windows 8 64 bit and I'm running it on a Gigabyte U2242 ultrabook on the max resolution 1 Yesterday, after booting up, I saw that the desktop is black, the icons are black/ invisible too, I can, however, see the taskbar.
On the other hand, the tile menu works just as intended.
The laptop has two video cards: Intel HD 4000 and a Geforce 650M, I've uninstalled the drivers for both under safe mode and reinstalled the latest ones.
I've read somewhere on the nvidia forums that the geforce driver can't be removed because v.304 comes with Windows 8. Is this true?

always it happens that on the startup of windows 8.1 (and also when it was installed windows 8 before the windows 8.1 upgrade) after the republic of gamers logo and before the appearance of the lock screen, the monitor remains completely black for 5 minutes about (after that appears the lock screen and windows works again well). Usually Windows starts itself in 10 seconds about. During the black screen commands don't works. Can be the use of cc cleaner, that cleaning temporary files, creates this problem? I tried to reinstall the last version of the Nvidia display drivers but nothing changed. I took away all those unuseful programs from the windows startup.
I have a Asus ROG G750JX-CV200H Notebook bought 2/3 weeks ago:
Windows 8.1 home
Core i7 4700HQ
RAM 16GB DDR3
Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M
HDD 750GB 7200rpm

I was casually using my pc and it suddenly shutdown. I tried to restart it, but it's stuck on black screen. Here's the thing there was no windows logo or no bios or no nothing appeared on the screen. It just goes black even if I restart it a hundred times. I am sure the cables of the monitor are fine and I am also sure that there are signals coming from the pc.
P. S. I even ASSUMED that the pc must have switched on and typed password to login and waited enough to get it to sleep mode and then recover from there. But still no luck.

I purchased a Lenovo G400s Touch laptop a couple of weeks back. I am running Windows 8.1 (Windows 8 came pre-installed and hence I don't have a Windows CD) / Intel i5 processor / 4 GB RAM. Video cards: Intel HD Graphics 4000 and Nvidia GeForce 2GB
Since the last two days I am having a problem where when I restart my system it automatically gives me a black screen, nothing happens at all and I have to shut down my laptop by pressing the power button and then start it again.
Refreshing my PC is my last option as I shall lose a lot of apps and other stuff.

I built a custom pc recently and I decided to get Windows 8.1. I built the pc and installed Windows 8.1 no problem. Rebooted after install no problem. Updated my graphics card drivers (tried playing minecraft and it said I needed to) and rebooted, no problem. Then, the next day when I turned it on, it booted onto the start screen, before the login, I clicked to continue to login and it went black. Everything but the mouse. It would flash on and off every little while.
I could move the mouse off the screen to the right and bottom, but not the top and left. I rebooted, same thing. One more reboot, and the splash screen is different . It says "Please Wait" on top of the loading circle thing. It says Recovery. I click advanced settings and continue to windows 8.1. It reboots and works fine. Until next time I turn it off and back on.
These are my specs, if needed:
AMD FX-6300 6-Core 3.5 GHz
ASRock 980DE3/U3S3
2x4GB G-Skill Ares DDR-3 1600mhz
Gigabyte Geforce 650 Ti
Windows 8.1 64-bit (obviously)

My Windows 8 just crashed, and now all I have is a black screen. The first error that came up was the "ntoskrnl.exe", and after that my computer would't start. I tried everything, like refreshing and restarting the computer. The last thing that I tried to do was to completely restart the computer; I created a new user and everything, but as I logged in windows 8 wouldn't start, and a black screen would come up. My computer is running fine like the mouse and the "ctrl-delete" are also working.

Well, the other day I found a game that I used to love from 2001 and I put it in my computer, and it starts up fine. But while it was loading I tried to alt+tab out of it to do other things while waiting. But instead it gives me one of those half game half main screen things. Where the task bar is show while the game is still on screen, but doesn't work to open the windows etc. so I tried to use task manager and it wouldn't work because of the glitches screen.
So I thought maybe if I restarted my computer it would go back to normal. But no, instead I get a (different) version of the "windows 8 black screen of death" thing. Instead of the blinking screen and stuff, the computer would turn on normally and show the hp logo (hp pavillion g6 btw) but after that, nothing. No cursor, no blinking, just nothing. Except when I press escape when it boots up, I can get into bios and stuff fine. So I tried to put my restore cd in there to try and "boot up" from it as most sites called it, and nothing. Or is it just my computer dying ( which it shouldn't be because I got it April of 2013 )
Also, sometimes when I boot it up it will go straight to the "windows automatic repair" screen with the logo, but it will sit there for maybe a minute or two and go back to a black screen

I can't move the mouse or press keys to "wake" the computer and i have to reboot the computer by pressing the power button.
.I have everything updated with the latest drivers, so i really don't understand the reason for this.

I've recently installed a dual boot, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The installation went fine but then after a very short time my Windows 8 Screen goes black. I had to press the power button to exit.
I've checked the Power settings and ensured the "Turn off display" was "never". I also updated my Video drivers thinking that might be the problem. Both to no avail. I've done a "Refresh" and a "Reset (which took 3 hrs). Again, all was fine for a short time, but while exploring the OS, again the black screen.
I followed... re-formatting the hard drive during the new installation, trying generic video drivers and doing Resets and Refreshes. None of that worked and still doesn't. The installations do complete as before, but I don't have enough time to download new updates to perhaps correct whatever problem(s) there are before all goes black after a few minutes. As I stated before I have to hold down the power button to exit.
If this is a clue, once the screen goes black and I revert back to Window7, before loading, the File System on ALL drives, including C and the Windows 8 partition has to check for consistency before Windows 7 boots up.
I've been quite busy and haven't had a chance to try re-installing again until now. Thinking the problem might have been the actual drive I used for previous attempts (it was a SATA external drive which by the way I previously used for a dual boot Vista/with Win7), I then created new partitions on 2 different USB connected external drives and attempted to install. It wouldn't do the install on either one. I received messages "Setup does not support disks connected through USB or Firewire,.... my USB drives are connected directly to computer not a hub. So I'm forced to use the SATA created partitions for the installations. (Disk 1)
If it makes a difference, through Disk Management, I've deleted the Windows 8 installs from those partitions then re-created a "New Simple Volume" before trying again. I even tried creating another partition on C but it wouldn't allow an installation saying it was a dynamic drive. Prior to me creating that additional C partition all were Primary but now they're all Simple Volumes as per the color codes.
I have two OEM Windows 8 installation disks, I've tried both.

Prior to this issue I had not installed anything all week nor made any updates, etc. I boot up windows as always and noticed that upon logging in, my lock screen took a while longer to bring me to my desktop. Now my desktop is completely black and my taskbar icons are gone. Opening firefox or any other program through the start menu does NOT make them show up on the taskbar as they always would. My desktop's pretty much disabled. Here's a screenshot.
I would be fine resetting to factory settings, however when it says my computer must restart to enter recovery mode, my computer in the middle of the restart gives me a light blue screen that says Windows encountered a problem and my system must restart. That is cancelling my recovery mode boot and sending me back to my black desktop.

I have a Gateway NE56R41u with an Intel B960 Processor, 4GB DDR3 Memory and running Windows 8.1 I have had the Laptop for 1 year. I got the info above from stickers on the Laptop so there is no more info I can give you. It originally came with Windows 8 and I upgraded it to 8.1 when that became available. When I boot the laptop it goes to the first screen, I click on the icon and the password screen comes up, I put in the password and it goes to a black screen with nothing on it and stays there on that black screen. I tried hitting the F key on boot up but nothing happens. It is not the screen, not the graphics card, otherwise I wouldn't see the first two screens. It acts like the OS has been wiped off.

My laptop has been acting really weird the last couple of weeks. It would crash randomly, and sometimes when I picked it up to put it somewhere else, it crashed too.
Now, I thought this was a problem with Windows 8.1, because it didn't behave like this before with normal Windows 8. So I Refreshed my laptop, and after that it worked again, without crashing.
I left it in sleep mode while I got some sleep too, and when I booted it up this morning, it crashed again.
After that the whole laptop wouldn't boot up, and now the only thing that shows is a cursor on a black screen, and it seems to be stuck in sleep mode, because I can't even turn it off completely manually. So I can't access the BIOS or make it boot up in Safe Mode. What the hell should I do?

I have upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8 since a while. So now here's my problem.
If I watch a video with Windows Media Player, then the video only has sound, the screen is black.
If I watch a video with the Video App from Windows 8, then it also only shows a black screen. (Audio works) After a few seconds the App crashes.
Also every App that has to do something with a video (like a YouTube App) keeps crashing. With Internet Explorer (App and Desktop) before the same. (for example : Youtube) Now it seems to work, don't know why.
The only way to watch videos is using VLC.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro on a Desktop PC.
My issue is this:
My PC is on 24/7 previously on every version of Windows when I walk away, the screen turns off after 30mins of inactivity, the PC stays on and when I return, I simply moved the mouse and within 2 - 3 seconds the monitor was back on, and I was where I left it.
On Windows 8.1 that sometimes happens, but 90% of the time what is happening, when I return to my PC, I move the mouse and nothing happens, anything I press on keyboard etc, monitor stays off on black screen, if I turn the monitor off by the button and back on, it just stays black, the only way I can get back to my Desktop is to restart the PC!!
I changed several power settings around, disabled password on idle setting, googled many things and tried and its still doing it. The PC is still on fans etc, but doesn't respond.
Weird thing is, it did it today when I was watching a movie on my PC connected media server downstairs (app is PS3 Media Server used with a WDTV Live Hub) I came to use the PC and it was black screen, I went back downstairs and could still access all my files on the media server, so the PC is still up and fully running when it does this, but I just can't get the monitor to display anything other than black screen, again on a reboot everything is fine again.
To summarise, I have power setting to turn off display after 30mins, usually a nudge of the mouse brings the monitor to life, this is not happening, I can only get back to desktop via hard PC reboot.

3 days ago i turned of my computer and left it turned of over the night. Then when i tried to turn it back on again, i get the windows 8/8.1 boot logo, then when it dissapears i just get a black screen, however, i get the windows tone after a while indicating that the system is running, and that the only problem is that the screen is not displaying anything.
I have tried booting in safe-mode, that worked. But no matter what i changed (start-up programs and resolution) nothing worked. I have tried connecting another screen to my laptop, but that screen also displays the black color.
I should perhaps mention that my laptop originally came with Windows 7, but i upgraded it to Windows 8, and later on 8.1.
