Windows 8 - Disk Read Error Occurred When Press Ctrl Alt Del To Restart
Oct 9, 2012
I have a toshiba laptop running windows 8. I went to delete photos off a usb when my laptop froze. I turned off the laptop by the power button waited, then when I turned the laptop back on it came up with the message
A disk read error occurred press ctrl alt del to restart
Each time I press ctrl alt del it returns to this message. I can only go to F2 or F12.
I have an Asus PC running W864, I have a Seagate 2 TB Harddrive and I have two 2TB Hard drive connected by USB.
Sometimes when I leave my PC running while doing other things I come back to it after a few hours and the PC is showing a black screen the message "BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart" This happens about once or twice a month, I can see no pattern or event that triggers it.
When I press Ctrl Alt Del the PC restarts and comes back to the same message.
If I reboot to a bootable repair disk or Windows 8 install disk my OS and Hard drive are not found, but my USB connected drives are.
I have to turn of my PC completely, I take out the plug, and switch it back on, sometimes it reboots properly to the Start screen but sometimes it just goes back to the black screen with the BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart message.
What seems to work always is if I turn off the 2 USB attached drives turn off the PC then restart, that works 100% of the time as far as I can recall.
I suspect my had drive is faulty but I have taken the PC to the supplier and their tests show all is okay, even when I run Seatools for Windows it checks out 100%.
Seatools for DOS does not find the Harddrive, I believe this is a W7/8 issue.
I have repaired the BOOTMGR using the process shown here, How to fix bootmgr is missing in Windows 8 But since Windows 8 disk found the Harddrive I suspect the PC would have booted okay anyway.
Active SMART says it is okay and Event Viewer in Windows 8 does not show any related errors.
I got an old computer, and my sister still is using it, it had XP but since support ended I decided to go for another system, unfortunetly there were no drivers for Vista and up, so I went for a USB boot - Linux Mint Maya 13 installation. The PC ended up being even slower and a friend just recently showed me how to install the drivers for Windows 8. I decided to go with a USB installation but when I restart and boot from the USB to install Windows 8 Pro, it says: Disk Read Error. I tested the USB on my new PC that I use and it did boot, but it won't boot from the old one.
I recently installed Windows 8.1 and it turned out that I could'nt find suitable drivers for the graphics card of my laptop which is GMA 4500, part of Mobile Intel Series 4. After a bit of reading, I found out that many others are also on the same ship as me.
Previously I tried the drivers from Intel Download Center and the modified drivers from eightforums but both of them gave me an error which read something like 'an error occurred while registering one or more components'.
Now that I have the right drivers, or at least right for my laptop, I am sharing them with others here. I have successfully tested a software that requires OpenGL2.0 with these drivers and it works great!
You most probably don't need a custom certificate installer! I did'nt need one. These drivers are digitally signed.

Im running Windows 8. Ive seriously had nothing BUT problems with this version. Not impressed.
I have a keyboard error that is really putting a hamper on my work right now. this started yesterday, but i can't recall when exactly it started happening.
I have a steel series apex keyboard and windows 8 64-bit
When I press either of these four keys, it shows me on my keyboard settings software and on the on-screen keyboard from windows 8 - that all four are being pressed simultaneously
= left-shift, left-ctrl, right-shift, right-ctrl.
It doesn't matter which of the four i press - all four are treated like they're being pressed down. Also if i press alt, it thinks both alts are being pressed. I have tried:
unplugging, plugging back in restarting my computer putting keyboard settings to default uninstalling and reinstalling all keyboard drivers/software scanning/fixing registry errors
Also I've tried three different keyboards, a logitech g15, and a standard dell keyboard; they all do produce the same error.
Windows8, 64x, i3, 4gb samsung 300e can not generate its health report. I did sfc scan(found some corrupted file but says it could not repaired some of them), hard disk and memory test(fine), disk cleanup done and I have tried exclusive microsoft services system start up (msconfig settings) but still failed to generate report.
I have windows 8, 32 bit & I'm trying to clear my print spooler, which I've done many times. I go to "run," type "cmd" & enter the command: "net stop spooler." When I execute the spooler command I get the above error message. I did a search on google & got a lot of hits but none of them were useful. What is going on & how do I solve this "system 5 error" problem?
When I download a torrent from zbigz.com. I receive the following message :
Network Error (tcp_error)
A communication error occurred: "Connection aborted". The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.
I tried restoring my computer using Easeus backup, but an error occurred during the restoration process. I've managed to fix it by doing diskpart /fixmbr and then using the windows dvd automated repair, however, what I ended up with is this:
So there are now two visible drives on my PC - C and Q (system reserved), and it doesn't see the data drive.
What I want to do is to make the data drive visible, and merge the C and Q drives into one (or make Q invisible), if that is possible. So, how do I do that?
I had to reinstall windows. I had a raid 0 with 2 drives, when I started widows the drive couldn't be accessed. so the only option was to convert to dynamic disk. I did that but still cant read or change drive letters. I am pretty sure my data is still on it. but how can I read this disk?
right now I am scanning it with easeUS data recovery and it looks like its finding files. any other way to read the drive?
Upgraded to windows 8 pro, worked fine for sometime, but now it does not boot- says either error loading operating system or disc read error. Re installed Windows 8 after booting with another hard drive with winXP, worked fine for sometime, then it failed again displaying the same error messages. Been using this system since long, but this has never happened before. I have reinstalled again by the same procedure, but always wary of the same problem happening again.
on my computer with windows 8 format as I am. Dvd format to format I've installed disk, but I erased or something during the installation, format the error output. The computer BEGAN to GIVE the following ERROR :
GIVEN WARNING
Error: no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed. </b> <img class="decoded" alt="http://i.hizliresim.com/W2jNzN.jpg" src="http://i.hizliresim.com/W2jNzN.jpg" />
I'm running windows 8 on a partition so I use it mostly for gaming. I have 115 GB on the partition, and when I totaled all the files in my Bootcamp drive it comes to a total of about 80 GB, 50 from games, 20 from the OS. However, I'm constantly getting error messages saying that my disk is almost full and that 105 gigabytes have been used. I've tried CCleaner and disk cleanup but nothing big is found. So why would it be using space greater than what can be seen in the disk when using explorer and is there any way to fix this error (if it is one)?
It only happens when I try to open certain website which requested some add-ons after I updated to Windows 8.1.
The Windows restart automatically, with gentle remainder' For the error you could search onlune ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY' something like this.
There are tons of troubles have been mode after a updated to Windows 8.1. And error message 'LogiLDA.dll missing. The specified module could not be found' shows every time when I turn on my computer.
I just purchased a Lenovo Laptop recently (specifically lenovo Z50-70). From the second day since I switched on the laptop, I began to get an error as follows:
"Your computer ran into an error and needs to restart. We are collecting some info, and then we'll restart for you"
I have done only 2 major changes to the laptop. Firstly, I updated windows 8.1. Secondly, I moved some space from local disk C to D. Why is this error caused.
1. Is the error caused due to windows 8 (or) some driver files? 2. Is it because of some deleted windows files? (Although I have not deleted anything!!) 3. Can a simple re-installation of windows 8.1 solve this issue? 4. Is it because of some hardware issue?
Cannot boot Windows 8 Pro x86 unless press F12 (network boot)......but I can't now because I scheduled a disk check that gets stuck during 27%. D:
My younger brother plays games a lot (he has been experiencing frequent BSOD crashes, too).
According to him, one day it just won't boot (a blank black screen shows up), and he had to press F12 (network boot, and I do not even know what that is but it works).
From there, I scheduled a disk check and thus I rebooted. The progress however, gets stuck at 27% D:
Also, I can't skip the disk check. It doesn't give me a 20-second time to press any key to skip it.
What I tried: Inserting my installation DVD in my external DVD drive but it won't work. The drive led light blinks and I can hear the drive trying to read it, but I think it can't (DVD drive doesn't show up on boot menu). Works perfectly here on my netbook, though.
Restarting and booting on the HDD, or pressing F12 brings up the Automatic Repair which says it could not load Windows properly and asks me to do a system restore.
More information: Once I witnessed the blue screen (it's the one with the sad emoticon, right?) and I remember the words: driver_irql etc., etc..
I have been having issues with my PC restarting and telling me something along the lines your Windows has encountered a problem and is collecting data and will restart now. So it would seem my install is corrupted in some manner.
So I have tried doing the Windows refresh but I cannot get passed the option of inserting media into drive. I place my Windows 8 64 bit professional CD into my drive and it reads it and just tell me incorrect media.
I installed Classic Shell on my Windows 8.1 laptop and i kinda didn't like it too much so i uninstalled it. But it hasn't uninstalled completely, when i try running setup again, and choosing the 'remove' option it doesn't uninstall! Anyways, that isn't really the problem, the thing is, when i press 'ctrl alt del', it doesn't go to task manager, i tried right clicking on the start icon and clicking on task manager but that didn't work either, so i had to go to start menu and search for task manager and then finally it came up.
I'm wondering if there is any correlation between classic shell and 'ctrl al del' not working, any way of getting it to work again.
A few days ago I went to turn up the volume from my keyboard and it would TAB me over to a different item on my screen. I tried pressing all of the Function keys and it messed up all sorts of things on my computer. I found out that if I hold down the FN key the F keys will work properly. How can I get it back to normal?
This states that another program is in progress or installing, or the system is waiting to restart.
The problem is I have all free programs; MBAM, SpywareBlaster, and Defender and only Defender has real protection. I have checked task manager for other programs that may be running.
Also, my wife's laptop is doing the same thing. Hers has been refreshed about 2 months agao and mine was reinstalled about 2 weeks ago. This has just begun.
Either Defender in both machines is faulty, MS is having an issue, there is an issue on my end with both pcs or??
I find it odd that both machines are doing the same thing.
Why in win 8.1 pro can't i select mutiple files that aren't in sequence by holding the control key like you could in win 7. Or How do you selectively choose files now?
My daughter managed to somehow get a blue screen of death every time she starts windows with "BAD_POOL_CALLER" as the error message which then makes the system restart. No action can be taken in windows because it restarts literally 10 seconds after you login. own?
So, after decades of using Windows I've just discovered the single most destructive command... The CTRL+Z... Yup, that's right.
So here's the problem. I always leave my computer on 24/7, and today I was in a application trying to undo something, but I didn't notice the application was out of focus and I was in fact "undoing" several actions I've made in the last days... Absolute disaster - I accidentally deleted Gigabytes of information and I've no way of getting them back... The worst part is, I don't even know for certain what I've deleted, as I don't exactly recall what I did in the last few days.
My question is, is there a history/log of the undo actions? I've already checked Event Viewer and there is nothing there.
After I upgraded to 8.1, I am not getting any sounds when hitting the individual keys on the onscreen keyboard. I have looked all through GodMode regarding 'Sounds' but can't find anything to enlighten me. It is turned on in "PC settings".
How to manage my laptop from ah dell crash?i mean when i on my dell laptop and it appeared like this " an unhandled exception occured in dell.all browser is close now.what to do?
Windows Update trying to install KB2976627, continually receiving error that I do not have enough disk space remaining to install the update. My OS Drive has 75 GB Remaining.
I am having trouble with a message in Action Center in Windows 8.1. It is saying "Check Backup Disk Space" and I cannot hide the message. I had Windows 7 File Recovery setup with Windows 8.1, but now after the upgrade, the message is "stuck." Can this be fixed? These two links explain it perfectly:
Windows 8.1 Update - Check backup disk space - Microsoft Community
Windows 8.1, can't remove "Check backup disk space" error in action center -
