Upgrade From Win 7 To Newer 8.1 - Keeping Files And Programs

Jan 4, 2014

I am thinking about upgrading my PC from windows 7 to the newer 8.1 Pro when i buy a new SSD drive.

I am concerned that if I upgrade; I may not lose my files, but will i lose the programs already installed on my HDD?

I will load the new OS on my SSD with the HDD disconnected and then connect my HDD once installed, so i have my files etc.

Once I then connect my HDD, will I still be able to acces the programs installed on it?

And also, how would i then delete windows 7 off of the HDD? I am going to invest in an external HDD for a secondary back up and

Trasnferring data - so i could copy the files to there, wipe the Internal HDD and copy the files back.

Could I possibly reinstall to C: then run a repair installation for all the programs that reside on D:?

Task Scheduler Not Keeping History After 8.1 Upgrade

Nov 2, 2013

Upgraded from 8 to 8.1 about a 2 weeks ago. Noticed about a week later that my nightly backup stopped running from the time 8.1 went in. Something stuck 2 new lines of code in the .xml for the task and also changed the run-userid. My admin userid got changed to a MS admin userid. I removed the two lines of code and changed the run-userid back to the correct one and now the backup runs OK. Then I noticed that it wasn't keeping task history. Next I noticed that no tasks were keeping history at all! And I'm unable to turn history on. It said it was on, I turned it off, turned it back on again. Still no history.

Can't Drag Files From Explorer Into 64-bit Programs

Apr 17, 2013

I've been having this issue and trying to wrap my head around it for a couple weeks, and I've had this new laptop less than a month. Just as I was posting this, I realized that it seems to be specifically 64-bit programs.

Specifically, the problem is that when I try to drag a file from Explorer into a program that I know is able to load it from drag-and-drop, all I get is the "no" pointer, the circle with the line. All the programs I've tested would let you drag files onto them just fine on my older Windows 7 laptop.

Some of the specific programs this is happening in:
Microsoft Office 2010 (seemingly the whole suite is acting like this, I tested Word and Powerpoint)
Paint.NET 3.5.10
Sony Vegas 12.0
Waterfox 18.0.1

I can File>Open files in these programs just fine, but dragging to them from Explorer would be miles more convenient. I've tested the files I've tried dragging. They drag fine into Notepad, they drag fine into Foobar2000, IrfanView, Notepad++, all operating as 32-bit.

Now I WAS having the same problem with Audacity and Skype, which is why I didn't catch the pattern of them all being x64 programs at first (since I have 32-bit versions of both), but that was happening because they were being run as Administrator, which is an issue I'd also like to try and resolve. I don't understand why running as Admin should prevent me from dragging files into open windows of them.

Maintenance :: Backup All Programs And Files Without System Image?

Mar 12, 2014

I recently got myself into a quandary. I installed 4 additional drives with the intent of creating a RAID volume that's supported by the BIOS. In order to do that I must change the BIOS setting for the controller which includes all volumes including my boot drive (which I don't intend to RAID.) The problem I have is that when I switch the controller from UEFI to RAID, Windows Recovery will not use the System Image that I made. It says the volume was created under a different setting (Bios vs. EFI).

What are my options? Is there a different backup setting that will preserve all my installed software? I'm not concerned about data which I can copy to an external volume but it would take several days to get all my software reinstalled. I'd like to avoid that. I assume I will have to reinstall Windows 8.1 Pro and then use a backup program to restore everything else. If that's the case, then I need to know which backup program will work. If there's a better way, I'd love to know. I see my options as either, get another backup program, get a separate controller card for either the boot drive or the RAID volume, or reinstall everything.

I never had this problem with 7 and along with some of the other little niggles of 8.1 I am seriously thinking of reverting back to 7 although it does run slower.

Hardware Drivers :: Transfer Programs And Files From Dual Core To Quad Core?

Sep 15, 2014

I have two laptops made by the same manufacturer and same year, but one is a dual core laptop with an SSD harddrive and the other is a quad core laptop with a regular hard drive. Both laptops run Windows 8.

I would like to transfer my programs and files from the dual core to the quad core. However, obviously the quad core has different hardware.

I am wondering if I simply remove the SSD from the dual core and put it into the quad core (replacing the quad's primary hard drive with the SSD) and simply boot up the quad core, would that be sufficient? Will the quad core recognize the hardware mismatch and automatically correct the drivers, while keeping my programs and files?

Or is there some other, efficient way to make the transfer?

Apps / Software :: Missing Some Programs In Programs And Features?

Apr 2, 2014

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.

Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 To 8.1 Upgrade Failed - Must Upgrade System BIOS

Jul 3, 2014

Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:

Couldn't install Windows 8.1

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:

Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Try again Cancel

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.

Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:

This PC doesn't meet system requirements

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.
