yesterday I did the Windows update and ever since I have a random speech bubble that flashes at the bottom right of the screen, next to the time. It comes up and disappears too quick for me to see what it is or even click it.
how to stop it from happening. It does nothing to my performance or anything, but I would prefer if it to go away, it's pretty disturbing.
I'm having a bit of a problem with my Windows 8. I'm currently running Windows 8 32-Bit, everything went well until this morning. I turned it on, and right before the log-on screen it started flashing purple. That's it, I couldn't do anything else, just watch the screen flash purple.
I have ran into this problem a while back and managed to fix it by using the Windows Setup and using the System Restore option but now for some reason I have no clue on how to Boot from a USB/CD.. it's not working.
I have a Compaq PC so it's a bit complicated to boot from devices.
When I try and use any part of the Metro UI, whether it be the Start screen or the sidebar, everything on the screen disappears when I mouse over something, and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del into Task Manager to get back to the desktop. Even when I move my mouse along the side, everything on the screen flashes.
I've just upgraded to 8.1 and I have seen this exact problem on a different laptop of similar specs (my specs should be in my profile).
I use a custom theme with dark colors. I like dark background and light text. The problem is that very often when I open a new explorer (like My Computer) or browser window (like Firefox), the whole background of the window/frame becomes white for a very brief period before showing the actual content of the window and assuming the dark background color that I assigned.
I'd like to use text to speech for when my eyes get tired.
Is there any way to use text to speech without narrator? When I turn it on it's incredibly annoying and slows down navigation.
I just want to be able to select text and/or pages and have them read, but ONLY text that I'm selecting. I don't want every single thing I click on to be read off to me.
Today I updated my Windows 8 install to Windows 8.1.
For the most part it went smoothly but I'm having a weird problem with my text to speech files.
But when I hit speak the voice is very distorted and the volume is low, it's the same for all the voices including the Microsoft ones.
I reinstalled TextAloud to the latest version, and I reinstalled the Lucy voice, (really the only one I use).
I figured that I had some glitch in the software but here is the weird part, when I played one of my Lucy videos the voice in the video shows the same distortion, so do .wav files that I had previously made and saved.
Windows normal sounds are unaffected as are music files. Even the music in the videos is normal while the speech is distorted.
When I played one of my videos that I have on Vimeo the voice is distorted. So something is affecting only the text to speech voices not any of the other sounds no matter what the source.
I don't have a clue, If I can't figure this out I'll have to go back to my Windows 8 backup image.I use TextAloud almost every day.
I updated my sound drivers, no change! SB Recon3D PCle sound card.
Text to speech is not working at all. I use Mumble and it is very important because I run the server. I checked the text to speech settings in windows, and mumble. When I hit "Preview" In either one, it highlights the text, and I hear nothing. Sound is coming out, just not text to speech.
I've successfully setup Speech Recognition but when I restart the computer, I receive the following error message...
When I try accessing "Advanced speech properties" to troubleshoot, I receive the following error "could not initialize volume meter. Please select a different audio input device".
Then the "Speech Properties" dialog box pops up and when I click "Advanced" and select the audio input device, the "Speech Properties" dialog box freezes every time when I try to hit "Apply".
"Speech recognition could not start because the language configuration is not supported" . That's the message I get when I try to open the speech recognition program.
Well I am greek and my windows are in greek version as well. As I understood from this message the greek ver. of Win 8 doesnt support speech recognition...

I just discovered recently I haven't received any windows update since 04/27/14. I was setup for automatic updates. The window says no updates available and no recent updates. When I select "check for updates" I get the messages "Windows could not check for new updates" & "There was a problem checking for updates. The error code is 80072F8F. I have checked the date time and they're correct. I have checked for viruses and malware. Nothing shows up.
I have Windows 8.1 RTM installed on my computer. Some days ago, Microsoft released the GA updates for the system. Windows update downloaded them, but they failed to install... I've downloaded the updates manually and applied them in the correct order... But no luck, the updates fail to install...
The graphics are bad after the 8.1 update...I'm using a desktop and windows 8 is a nightmare..thinking about just returning brand new computer...its too frustrating with this crapoy software.
i used to use windows 8.1 for about a year and it was running well but lately my laptop became slow i used refresh PC and now i use windows 8 the problem here is that ican't upgrade to 8.1 unless i install all previous updates when i try to download them via windows update it just stucks at 0% i tried many times and tried windows update diagnostic and this was the result but still no response it's 0%
Why can't I find the update in the Store? 2 possible reasons are listed in the article:
1) Your PC needs another update, KB 2871839, After checking for this update and not seeing it I still received the 8.1 update via Windows store anyway & downloading now.
2)Some editions of Windows 8 don't support the free update to Windows 8.1.
This feels like it started happening after the latest update, but I've noticed that I have what looks like two taskbars, one behind the other, now. Nothing I do fixes it - I have to reboot the machine. Here's a screenshot where I pulled one of them up higher to easily see the difference.
I purchased a Windows 8 Pro licence through a classified advert on another forum in Sept 2013 and now since Windows XP is no longer supported I decided to update my OS. I thought I got a good deal on the licence and when I went to try download an official Windows 8 file I couldn't. I contacted Microsoft who informed me my licence is a valid Windows 8 Pro VL licence. They were unable to provide me with a physical ISO to download from and told me to ask the person I purchased it from... who of course has since disappeared.
So I downloaded the Windows 8 Pro x64 ISO from MSDN, installed great, product activated perfectly, my old pc is running and booting fast and I actually like it. However when I try to update the scroll bar just constantly scrolls left to right and the progress bar shown at 0%.
I have googled, and deleted the folder called the DOWNLOAD folder in SoftwareDistribution following advice online, however this still does not fix the problem. Occassionally I have got the files to download after the 0% progress says different, and when it comes to install these update files, nothing happens.
Is it because I downloaded a dodgy OS version from MSDN? it is the 915417.iso that I used.
Also can I update to Windows 8.1? When I installed the first few times I tried to update through the Windows Store. it said I require updates. Some files might have updated, I did a "shut down and update" option once and since that the option of installing Windows 8.1 has disappeared.
While updating my computer i accidentally left the charger out. So it shut down towards the end of the update and now when i restart my computer i'll only the see the HP start-up/loading screen and then the screen just turns black and all i see is my cursor. I didn't get any Windows installation cd with my computer and now what to do.
Usually when on my Desk Top screen I could go to Google Search, find a site that I wanted to add to my desk top (not bookmark) , minimize it and then drag the address on to the Desk Top screen.
What happens now is that when trying to minimize it shows a blank screen underneath ? The only way that I can get back to the Desk Top is by going to top left corner and obviously I cant drag to there. How to rectify this.
I am looking forward to 10/18 and getting the Win 8.1 update from the Store to update my Win 8 machine. I wonder if doing the update will modify the partition that is labeled Window Recovery on my HD. I suspect not.
I have a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro on a new PC and have done for some weeks. On Friday i hit the shutdown option Update and Restart. On the Saturday (yesterday) I turned on my machine to greeted with the Windows 8 Logo then a blank screen and doesn't boot at all into Windows (And not i have checked both monitors and they connected fine.
What was i doing just BEFORE "Update and Restart".......
1. Enabled UEFI on the BIOS 2. Installed the Hyper-V Windows 8 Features 3. Created and installed a Virtual Switch 4. Created and installed a Virtual Machine and installed Windows 8. 5. Onto the VM i installed Visual Studio 2012 Web (MVC4) and SQL Server Express 2012 (NOT LocalDb)
Then after than i ran the Windows Update on the main PC and pressed "Update and Restart".
What have I tried doing to resolve this issue?
Booted (F12) using the OEM Disc. I have then Repair your computer->Troubleshoot....
1.1 Advanced Options 1.2 Automatic Repair 1.3 This fails and I get the following error:
[URL] ....
then i tried....
2.1 Refresh PC 2.2 I get the following error:
"The Drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again"
then i tried....
3.1 Reset PC 3.2 I get the following error:
"Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing"
then i tried....
4.1 System Restore 4.2 This fails and i get the following error:
[URL] ....
So I'm completely at a loss. I presume if I unlock the primary disk I should be able to boot or at least repair? Anyway i really don't want to wipe and uninstall if possible.
I am going to be restoring a Windows 8 computer to factory original, then upgrading it to 8.1. Would it be better, after the restore, to let Windows Update do all the original Windows 8 updates, then go to the Windows Store and upgrade to 8.1, or should I go to the Store right after the restoration, get 8.1, and then do Windows updates?
i download the windowssetupbox.exe write the key - work after that next and it write me always no internet connection and the internet works! i try to disable comodo internet security and nothing.. and other question: how can i know if my activation its vl or something else?
I am currently running a pc with Windows 8 Pro activated by KMSPico. Will/should the Win 8.1 update install/work ok on my system when it becomes available?
