Setup Installation :: Unable To Update To Windows 8.1
Jul 10, 2014
I am having a hard time upgrading from windows 8 to 8.1, I have tried installing through the store, installing using the files downloaded by the store (copied them before they were deleted) and they all give me an error. The errors are as follows:
installer using key: This key does not work with this version of windows 8 (using Professional 64-bit, tried 8 and 8.1 key but neither work).
Installer using ei.cfg file: Setup failed to authenticate the product key (or similar, it is set to professional so this should not be an issue).
Store: just says setup failed.
The first time I tried updating, the installer froze and did not complete so I had to re-start, could this have something to do with the issue I am experiencing? My specs are as follows:
Windows 8 Professional 64-bit
2TB HDD
16GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia Geforce GT545 with 3GB VRAM
Realtek AC97 onboard audio
Intel core I7 3.2ghz quad-core multi-thread processor

I have a fairly new PC running Windows 8 and I can't seem to upgrade to Windows 8.1--There are a bunch of issues-
1. Can't connect to the Windows Store--tried everything here save the refresh, which I do NOT want to do.
2. Downloaded the 8.1 ISO and burned it to a disc--get the error message that 8.1 could not be installed--0x101-0x20017 error--tried installing with a clean boot, turned off antivirus suite, etc
3.sfc /scannow does not work.
So currently I'd like to forget about the store for the moment and continue updating from the downloaded ISO. I really do not wish to restore the computer and I have a lot of software I'd need to reinstall and this would take a long time.

I have tried updating my Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit, upgraded from Windows 8 Pro) with the new "Update 1" (KB2919355) but it always fails with ERROR code 8007005 (or 80073712).
What I have tried do to fix:
Run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic (that e.g. removes files from C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload and cleans Windows update history metadata info)DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
After all of this, still the update (KB2919355) fails
There must be something that Microsoft needs to fix, there are xxxxxxxxxxxx amount of similar complains and reports out there...

Because it does not contain enough free space. Clearly I have enough free space... [URL] ....
What should I do? I want to do a dual boot, so I can keep Windows 7 in case I don't like 8.1...
I formatted and deleted that partition and I tried again with 201gb, and no luck. [URL] ....

I am currently on Windows 8. I am trying ti update to 8.1. I went to the store and hit download. The download started and got to 50% then a message said 'installing preparing your pc'. About 15 seconds after that it starts all over downloading. This has repeatedly happened for the last 14 hours. I have restarted and shutdown my pc and when I go back to the store and hit download it says it is downloading. I tried to cancel the download without success. I then went back to download again and it tells me app has been installed.
P.S. Are there any other ways to do the update besides from the store?

Machine is an Acer Aspire laptop, i5 processor, 4GBRAM. Shipped with Windows 7, have been running Windows 8 on it for over 6 months now.
Certain updates from Windows Update simply will not install, it says "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes". These updates are the ones that will allow me to update to 8.1 via the store.
Upon scouring the internet, I have tried many fixes, including a slui.exe activation, running a DISM cleanup, running sfc / scannow, disabling all non-Microsoft services from msconfig, running the SURT tool.....

Upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows store. Can't use refresh or reset anymore.
Installed Windows 8.1 trial. Can't use Windows 8 OEM key to activate it.
Attempted to install windows 8 from Microsoft site, so I could use my Windows 8 OEM key, however, won't accept key on site because it says it is not a retail key.
How can I get Windows 8 back on my computer, activated with my OEM key?
If I do that then I guess I can upgrade it again from the Windows store to Windows 8.1.

I have Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate installed and activated. I am trying to upgrade to Windows 8 and the upgrade assistant tells me it needs at least 2gb when I have 8gb and Windows 7 sees and knows I have 8gb
I am thinking it could be my bios, but it's already at the latest version
Here are some photos from my bios, so you can tell me if there is anything I need to enable.
These are photos from my bios. I need to change to get this to work.

bought Win 8 for a Win 7 Dell laptop in Jan. 2013 and have happily used Win 8 for a year. I have a Win 8 backup disc and valid license key.
I decided to update Win 8 to the free Win 8.1 a few days ago and went ahead with the download and installation of Win 8.1. However, after a seemingly successful installation, set up and login, a simple reboot resulted in no longer being able to boot. I can boot to safe mode but cannot boot properly no matter what I do.
There is no specific error message when I reboot, the OS simply fails to reach the login stage and reboots again. It then opens the 'Failed startup' page asking if I wish to use advanced options or restart.I tried turning off all non-Microsoft software like AVG, Comodo, Samsung Keys, etc., but it didn't solve the issue.
I also noticed that Safe Mode boot fails when I attempt to boot to 'Safe Mode with Networking' but is successful when booting to simple 'Safe Mode' or 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt'. I have attempted to burn the Win 8.1 disc as described on this site but from a Win XP system which according to the download software is not possible and unfortunately I do not have access to another system.

I own a Lenovo Y580 Ideapad that came with Windows 8 preinstalled, so I was never given a license key or CD, and I am trying to use the SSD as my main drive by doing a clean install of Windows 8 there and then copying over any other files I want from my HDD.
I downloaded a Windows 8 iso file and verified the hash so I know it was a clean file. I burned that iso to a flash drive using Rufus, following all of the instructions in this post: UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows
When I attempted to boot from the flash drive my computer would hang at the Lenovo start up screen (black screen with Lenovo written on it) and then start flashing on/off every 5 seconds for a minute or two and then hang at the start up screen once more indefinitely. It would not let me F2 to BIOS when I turned it on or F12 to Boot device selection.
So, I formatted the flash drive and then followed this post: Create Bootable USB or DVD with Windows 8 ISO Once again, no dice. Same problem. I tried putting my HDD as the very last boot option, enabling Legacy boot mode, etc etc but still haven't been successful. The iso I used was an x64 Windows 8 (core I believe? Just regular). I am currently downloading the 8.1 iso to see if that will work.

I'm getting ready to re-install Windows 8 on a laptop. I have a Windows 8 OEM disc that I'd like to slipstream Windows 8.1 Update 1 into so I don't have to spend extra time downloading Windows 8 updates before having to download Windows 8.1 and then all those updates. I'd like to be able to just install Windows 8.1 with all the current updates included.

I installed windows 8 pro and here are the issues I am having.
Every time I install (Pro Disk) when it finishes and restats, it goes right back to the beginning of the install Once I can get it installed, once the first screen spins, it stays black, but if I sleep and wake it, it goes right to the sign in screen-weird.
Then, it says no updates have been searched or ever installed, when I search I get the Error Code 80248007 cannot update.

I'm trying to update my windows 8 to windows 8.1 on a HP Pavilion g7-2261sb.
However, after numerous trials, every time, the installation stops and says "failed to install. error code 0xc0000374". EDIT: I checked again and it comes after the "collecting data" part.
I've ran the update checker (compatibility), and that gave no problems or errors.

Recently I was trying to upgrade my Windows 8 Pro computer to Windows 8.1 Pro. But I had no working USB sticks so I thought I could make a NTFS partition into my hard drive and extract the Windows 8.1 Pro installation setup files on there. So when I restarted my computer, it booted up into the Windows 8.1 Pro installing setup but said that I needed to boot up into Windows and put the installation media back in. But I could not and just kept booting into the installation.
So I thought that if I delete the partition I could go back to Windows. So I did with DISK PART. Now when I restarted it, it now gives me "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I'm guessing that when I deleted that partition, there is unallocated space left and my computer is trying to read off that but not the Windows partition.
I have a Compaq computer ...

Currently running WinXP, meets all requirement for Windows 8. However, when I try to copy the ISO file to USB using Win7 DVD download tool to create a bootable USB device, the USB I'm trying to copy it to will not show up in the list of "Devices to Copy In".
I have tried this several times with 2 different USB drives, both 8GB, one with more than 4GB free and the another is completely empty. They both work perfectly well, but when I reach the screen with the list of devices to copy the ISO file on to (Step 3 of 4, Win7 USB/DVD Download Tool) they don't show up on the list despite re-inserting them and refreshing a couple hundred times. The only removable device that does show up is the Floppy Disk.
I am using the DVD is not an option, since my DVD player crashed last week and I don't have the time to get it fixed right now, and I'd really like to get Windows 8 installed as soon as possible.

After Windows 8.1 downloaded and installed an update and also SQL Server 2012 SP1, I restarted it and then it no longer booted. The BIOS splash screen would pop up, then the screen went black and nothing else happened. Even the hard drive activity stopped.
I booted from the Windows 8 DVD and chose Troubleshooting and tried Automatic Repair and System Restore, neither of which worked. I then chose Refresh Your PC. However, it then said the drive was locked and I should unlock it before continuing. I used Diskpart to clear the attributes of the volume but that didn't work.
In the end, I did a reinstall without formatting the disk. Once I booted it up properly, I had a look in the Windows.old folder and all of my documents, pictures and other work are missing.
Firstly, is there any way I can roll back to the original install so I don't have to spend a full day installing everything again, and if not, how do I recover all my files?

I bought a legitimate copy of Windows 8 Pro Upgrade version about a month ago. While doing a clean install on my desktop computer, I found out that you cannot do a clean install from an upgrade version of Windows. I figured out how to do a clean install of Windows by following the steps on this website: [URL] .....
When I open the Windows Store App, I can't find the option that lets me update to Windows 8.1. Is there anyway I can legitimately update my copy of Windows to Windows 8.1?

Just sharing in case people have been having the same problem following a Store update to 8.1.
After downloading and installing via the store, a restart shows a bluescreen displaying:
"Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
There isn't enough memory available to create a ramdisk device
Error Code: 0xc0000017
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media... blah blah blah"
However, after getting that message, I was able to select F9 and it rebooted back into Windows 8 with a message stating:
We couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC
0xC1900101-0x20017
After a lot of digging, I decided that a system refresh was the way forward.
After I did this, I installed one update - KB2871389. This made the 8.1 update visible in the store
Applied the store update and it worked perfectly.
