I have an HP p6720f that came with Windows 7 installed. I upgraded to 8 with no issues around December of last year.
I downloaded 8.1 from the Windows app store without problem. I tried the first install without changing anything (for some reason, I just thought it would work). It got to "Setting up a few more things 59%" and stayed there. For 6 hours. I finally powered it off and went through the restore process. My error code was 0xC1900101 - 0x4000D.
After some reading I tried again, this time unplugging everything but the mouse and keyboard. I made sure I had all the latest updates from Windows and all my drivers were updated. Uninstalled a couple of programs that the compatibility checker said were not compatible (old version of Yahoo Update, an old baseball game). I cleared the Windows Store cache and disabled Windows Defender and Firewall. I did a clean boot and started the upgrade process over again. Same thing. Stuck at "Setting up a few more things 59%". Started the upgrade at 8pm, checked in the morning around 7am with no change. Came back around 1pm and still no change - 59%. Over 15 hours and still, the upgrade failed.
I gave up and used Microsoft remote tech support. The guy ran a check disk thing that scanned for errors. No errors. He then did some sort of network scan or repair, not entirely sure. It took a long time. He started the upgrade. Stuck at 59% once again. They called and took control of my computer. This time only checking Windows Update to make sure there were not updates to install, then went right into the 8.1 upgrade. I knew this wouldn't work. Same result.
For my most recent attempt I did a system refresh (under PC settings, General). This got rid of all my apps and installed programs, but kept my personal files. I was sure this would work. Nothing left to cause any issues. But again, hung on "Setting up a few more things 59%" overnight (8+ hours).
When it's stuck there, the circle/dots are moving like it's working. My activity light starts out doing a short, regular blink, then just doesn't do anything.
What else can I do? I don't NEED to upgrade to 8.1, but i should be able to. And it shouldn't be that complicated.

I have Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate installed and activated. I am trying to upgrade to Windows 8 and the upgrade assistant tells me it needs at least 2gb when I have 8gb and Windows 7 sees and knows I have 8gb
I am thinking it could be my bios, but it's already at the latest version
Here are some photos from my bios, so you can tell me if there is anything I need to enable.
These are photos from my bios. I need to change to get this to work.

I own a Lenovo Y580 Ideapad that came with Windows 8 preinstalled, so I was never given a license key or CD, and I am trying to use the SSD as my main drive by doing a clean install of Windows 8 there and then copying over any other files I want from my HDD.
I downloaded a Windows 8 iso file and verified the hash so I know it was a clean file. I burned that iso to a flash drive using Rufus, following all of the instructions in this post: UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows
When I attempted to boot from the flash drive my computer would hang at the Lenovo start up screen (black screen with Lenovo written on it) and then start flashing on/off every 5 seconds for a minute or two and then hang at the start up screen once more indefinitely. It would not let me F2 to BIOS when I turned it on or F12 to Boot device selection.
So, I formatted the flash drive and then followed this post: Create Bootable USB or DVD with Windows 8 ISO Once again, no dice. Same problem. I tried putting my HDD as the very last boot option, enabling Legacy boot mode, etc etc but still haven't been successful. The iso I used was an x64 Windows 8 (core I believe? Just regular). I am currently downloading the 8.1 iso to see if that will work.

Its a HP Envy laptop with a 1TB HDD running on windows 8. But the laptop has been having a lot of start-up errors and finally some files corrupted and windows wouldn't function properly. So I decided to reformat it to 8.1, a complete wipe to get rid of all the pre-installed HP crap.
So here's what I've tried, in the same order.
> I tried to install windows 8.1 through windows 8. -It failed after it restarted-
> I tried to install windows 8.1 through USB ontop of the Windows Partition (There were 5 partitions). -It failed because of a GPT (If I remember correctly) Partition error-
> I decided to delete all the partition and install Windows 8.1 ontop the entire 1TB disk space. -It started installing but then failed with an error code 0x80070057-
> I tried diskpart through CMD to clean the disk drive then followed with a format to ntfs -It always just sticks on 0 percent%-
> I tried all the same steps with Windows 7 -The exact same errors happen-
I've got one last option, plug the HDD into my desktop and try to format it that way but this is a lot of work so I'd like to keep it as a last resort.

I bought a new laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed (and immediately updated it to 8.1).
I decided after a week to buy an SSD and installed Windows 8.
I now find there is no product key to be found, and can't seem to activate Windows.
1. I've tried a few things. I tried to enable UEFI in PC Settings, but the setting isn't there (does this mean my laptop doesn't support UEFI?)
2. I entered my BIOS. CWM was enabled, and pwe enable. But SECURE BOOT disabled. So I enabled SECURE BOOT, but regardless of what options I select, the laptop keeps booting into the [Legacy] BIOS, possible because there are no BOOT OPTION PRIORITIES found any longer?
My problem is activating windows, and if UEFI is an option, enabling it.

I'm trying to install Windows 8 on my sister's desktop which has a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H. I bought a new Samsung 830 SSD and it is being detected but with SATA I 1.5. When I try to format the drive it crashes and reboots.
I tried running the installer on an OCZ solid 3 which is what is running Windows 7 and the installer also crashes. Is there a way I can get the error before it reboots the installer?

I tried a clean install on my system which has a Gainward GT430 (nVidia GT430) 1GB display adapter. What happens is that soon after booting from the DVD the display becomes corrupted (blurred and difficult to read) and I can only barely make on what's on the screen and proceed with the installation.
After the point where I format my drive, windows looks like its installing but after the reboot the display goes to sleep, and I have to start over.
On the same system installing Windows 7 had no issues whatsoever. Installed fine with nearly all the drivers available natively to windows. I was installing Windows 8 64 bit using original media.

I have a small computer that is simply used for email, I want to upgrade the system from Vista to Win 8 Pro, I ran the initial upgrade assistant, and it claimed it would work on my system... I bought the upgrade, started the installation (choosing to keep all windows settings and files) and during the actual installation process, it freezes at 11%.
I know that others have asked questions like this, but I don,t have time to do a clean install, can this installation be completed without having to move all of my data from this machine?

So, I am trying to upgrade from windows 7 to 8 and everytime i begin the download it starts to go and makes it past the preparing which i see a lot of people having problems with. then it gets to the installation part and freezes at 11%. i left it to install last night as i went to bed woke up the next morning and it was still at 11% so, i decided to restart it maybe something was wrong, still nothing. Then i said to myself maybe if i start the disc from the startup screen it will work. Nope. When i did that it told me the installation process had already been started and i needed to remove the disc start up my computer normally and continue from there the way i was before.

I am having trouble installing windows 8 on my PC. So I slow burnt the ISO as I always do, and verified the contents. Now I always do a clean install never an upgrade. When I boot from DVD I get to the windows 8 logo and my DVD drive and hard drive seem to be loading files (although this edition has no load progress bar like the previous windows which is annoying) after several seconds i get the animation of the dots twisting but there's no activity?
The disc stops reading the hdd does nothing and the splash screen continuously mocks me it just doesn't get past that screen. After several attempts I thought I could try an upgrade from desktop instead. After a successful upgrade my pc reboots and gets stuck on that same splash screen it just doesn't want to get past that screen. I have looked all over the forums and googled various keywords to find others with this problem and have had no luck. It is noteworthy to mention that windows 7 runs perfectly with no problem on my PC and I am attempting to install the 32bit version I have tried widows 8 an windows 8 pro with no luck
My specs are as follows
HP Compact Presario SR1719UK
-AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.20ghz
-1GB DDR RAM
-ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series (Approx total memory is 287MB)
-PHEONIX - AWARD BIOS v6.00
-DirectX 11 with WDDM 1.0 driver

I just got a new laptop, a Lenovo X230, for which I paid extra to have the OS on it as Windows 8 Pro.
So--now I have it, and Win 8 Pro 64 is installed and activated on it. I am a legal owner of Win 8 Pro.
However, I would like to do a clean install of Win 8 on the computer, to have it free of bloatware, etc. (In fact, I would like to set up a multi-boot with Win 7, and perhaps even triple boot with Xp as well. (I have installation media and my product keys for XP and 7 though, so those are not really a problem.)
The computer came with no discs at all. There is a procedure to make recovery disks. I may do that, but I think those will be to restore the computer to how it came from the factory, and therefore not usable for a clean install.
I don't see my product key for Win 8 anywhere. Not on the computer, not on any kind of card that came with it, etc.
I looked at the tutorial here for clean install of Windows 8, but it requires an install disc and product key. I have neither, although I am a legal owner of Windows 8.
Is there a way I can create (from my installed Windows 8) a win 8 install disk, that can be used for a clean install? Or a link to download one? Is there a way I can get my product key?

I am trying to upgrade from windows 8 pro to windows 8.1 on a samsung laptop. The download completes and installation starts.
After a while the following message appears "you cant install windows on a usb flash drive with setup"
I am not actually trying to install to a flash drive. I contacted Microsoft and after 5 hours they said that I should connect to the internet with a cable and not by wireless in order to solve the problem (this didn't work of course and I had told them that it was an install problem and not a download problem).

Until very recently i was running Windows 8 with a 240 GB Sandisk SSD as a primary and a 2 TB Western Digital Green HDD as a storage. I decided to set up a RAID 1 setup so i purchased a second 2 TB HDD and installed it.
My intent was to run windows 8 off the 240 SSD as a primary and have a RAID 1 setup for my 2TB HDDs.
I learnt that my data configuration was set to AHCI. I decided to do a complete clean install and change the sata configuration in BIOS to RAID.
After successfully creating a RAID volume using my 2TB HDDs i proceeded to install Windows off my primary. I am however having difficulties in that it will not allow me to install windows on either drive.

I was writing an email and randomly my fairly new and perfectly working laptop kept freezing and showing Disk 100% in Task Manager so I restarted. After that my laptop is stuck on "automatic repair mode" whenever I power on and none of the options work. I have the options to "Continue to win 8" "use a device" "troubleshoot" or "turn off my pc" NONE of these options are working! If I click anything it just freezes.
How can I recover some important files I had on my desktop? I didn't have any partitions! I'm not able to boot with Ubuntu, win 7, or norton ghost DVDs. I even set the DVD drive to boot first in BIOS.
It's a toshiba satellite s855d-s5148
AMD A10
ram 8gb
HDD 1 tb

Upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows store. Can't use refresh or reset anymore.
Installed Windows 8.1 trial. Can't use Windows 8 OEM key to activate it.
Attempted to install windows 8 from Microsoft site, so I could use my Windows 8 OEM key, however, won't accept key on site because it says it is not a retail key.
How can I get Windows 8 back on my computer, activated with my OEM key?
If I do that then I guess I can upgrade it again from the Windows store to Windows 8.1.

bought Win 8 for a Win 7 Dell laptop in Jan. 2013 and have happily used Win 8 for a year. I have a Win 8 backup disc and valid license key.
I decided to update Win 8 to the free Win 8.1 a few days ago and went ahead with the download and installation of Win 8.1. However, after a seemingly successful installation, set up and login, a simple reboot resulted in no longer being able to boot. I can boot to safe mode but cannot boot properly no matter what I do.
There is no specific error message when I reboot, the OS simply fails to reach the login stage and reboots again. It then opens the 'Failed startup' page asking if I wish to use advanced options or restart.I tried turning off all non-Microsoft software like AVG, Comodo, Samsung Keys, etc., but it didn't solve the issue.
I also noticed that Safe Mode boot fails when I attempt to boot to 'Safe Mode with Networking' but is successful when booting to simple 'Safe Mode' or 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt'. I have attempted to burn the Win 8.1 disc as described on this site but from a Win XP system which according to the download software is not possible and unfortunately I do not have access to another system.

I have a 256gb ssd installed on my laptop and I recently had installed Ubuntu partition on it and ended up removing it. I have instead reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 8. However I see no other partition during the installation processing and it's saying I only have 238gb available not my disk's full 256gb. So far I tried chkdsk and disk management and it failed to see any other used space.

I am having a hard time upgrading from windows 8 to 8.1, I have tried installing through the store, installing using the files downloaded by the store (copied them before they were deleted) and they all give me an error. The errors are as follows:
installer using key: This key does not work with this version of windows 8 (using Professional 64-bit, tried 8 and 8.1 key but neither work).
Installer using ei.cfg file: Setup failed to authenticate the product key (or similar, it is set to professional so this should not be an issue).
Store: just says setup failed.
The first time I tried updating, the installer froze and did not complete so I had to re-start, could this have something to do with the issue I am experiencing? My specs are as follows:
Windows 8 Professional 64-bit
2TB HDD
16GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia Geforce GT545 with 3GB VRAM
Realtek AC97 onboard audio
Intel core I7 3.2ghz quad-core multi-thread processor

Recently I was trying to upgrade my Windows 8 Pro computer to Windows 8.1 Pro. But I had no working USB sticks so I thought I could make a NTFS partition into my hard drive and extract the Windows 8.1 Pro installation setup files on there. So when I restarted my computer, it booted up into the Windows 8.1 Pro installing setup but said that I needed to boot up into Windows and put the installation media back in. But I could not and just kept booting into the installation.
So I thought that if I delete the partition I could go back to Windows. So I did with DISK PART. Now when I restarted it, it now gives me "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I'm guessing that when I deleted that partition, there is unallocated space left and my computer is trying to read off that but not the Windows partition.
I have a Compaq computer ...
