Scanned JPG Opening As Unreadable Word Document
Mar 21, 2014When I try to save a JPG scanned document it opens in an unreadable word document, how can I fix this; and open JPG docs as JPG.

Document Recovery From 7-Zip Archived Word File
Jan 13, 2014I was working on a document that was located in a zip archive. I have 7-zip installed on my computer. I'm running Windows 8. I repeatedly saved the file in Word while I was working on it. However, I've since rebooted the computer and my file is missing. All of the "saves". I've made didn't seem to update the file in the archive. I understand that I should have extracted the file first before working on it; however, I received no prompt from Word 2013 that my saves were not being recorded. Perhaps the file was saved into some sort of temporary folder/file that 7-zip creates/works from.
Are my changes lost permanently? Does there exist a temporary file somewhere with my changes in it?
This is a court document and I made substantial modifications to it, and I really need it back.

Opening OpenOffice Document In File Explorer In Win 8
Feb 28, 2013I have an existing OpenOffice document, (it's actually a 375 page book of Spanish) in File Explorer's 'Documents' that I transferred from an old XP laptop by flash drive. All my other documents except .doc & the Oo one, which is: .odt have opened up successfully. I downloaded Oo 3.4.1 which is the latest one. It will by right clicking & selecting 'Open with', after a long period open in Wordpad but a lot of the lines have jumped out of column. I tried right clicking, selecting 'Share with' & 'Specific people' & typed in 'Administrator'' along with my User name of robinp. It didn't solve the problem. I'm going to have a try at right clicking & selecting 'Properties'>'Security', etc. & trying that route.

Aug 20, 2013I just downloaded Adobe reader 11, and have been trying to open pdf files from the "My Documents" folder. Specifically files that I have just written and saved from MS Word. Adobe says: "There was an error opening this document. Access denied." However, if I save the file into the Downloads folder, it will open no problem.

Network / Sharing :: Scanned Documents Not Showing Up On Workstations
Jul 25, 2014I use windows 8.1 on a desktop for a server in our small office. Server + 5 workstations. I was using an old XP machine to scan documents in. I moved the scanner to the Windows 8.1 server. The XP machine scanned them and sent them to a location on the server and from there anyone could get to the document.
Now, if I scan from the server to the same location it will not show on the workstations in Windows Explorer (or Thunderbird if emailing). It's there and all the workstations have permission to access the folder.
If I am on the Win 8 machine and copy the file to another location and then back to the scan docs location, no problem it shows. If I copy a doc from a workstation to the Server. No problem it shows.
I suspect some type of permissions issue but am unable to figure out how to resolve it.
Unreadable Font In Windows 8 For System Dialogue
Jul 21, 2013I don't know what to call the system feedback I'm getting in an unreadable font. It's what comes up in the lower left of the screen when you hover over one of the format-change buttons here on the message edit box.
I want to change this font to something I can read.
Get Message Saying File Directory Corrupted And Unreadable?
Jun 27, 2014i'm not sure why this has started, but when I now try to DL any files or save ANY files, I get a message saying 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable'.
I tried to open an image with 'Windows Preview' & got 'Windows Photo viewer cant open this image, as the file appears to be damaged to large or corrupted' (none of which is correct)-yet I can still open ALL images by double clicking to use the windows photo/image viewer App
I also can not save anything either- I tried to take a screen shot & save it using paint- I just got the same 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable' message.
With Windows Internet Explorer, I have been trying to DL a torrent, but cant "open" the DL link (I click "open", but nothing happens), nor can I 'save it' (as I get the same 'File is corrupted & unreadable' message for both "save" options), nor can I click cancel to close the DL options box in Internet Explorer- as again, nothing happens when I click it.
To try get around these problems I tried using the magnet link option- which worked ONCE, but now even that wont work, as I cant DL the 2nd file- the DL starts (after taking ages to DL meta data- which is odd in itself), then the torrent is shortly terminated & I get the 'Error: File or directory is corrupt & unreadable' file message .
TO add to this I cant listen to a podcast with chrome either (tells me QuickTime failed to initialise Error#0) when I click "listen in a new window" & when I click "download" nothing happens at all.
EDITED: I forgot this problem has also prevented my VPN from working- I get the same Corrupted file/directory message every time I've tried to re-install it.
DL was fine, viewing images worked perfectly & I was able to open things in new windows without a problem.I have tried fixing with command prompt- it said it couldn't run to find the problems, tried using the windows restore thing, again said it couldnt complete a restore due to not being able to run properly.

Dec 28, 2013I have a Toshiba 2TB External HD that came with NTI Backup software. Seemed to work fine until Win 8.1 installed and now I get the 'Corrupted' message, although the Drive shows up in This PC. Driver appears okay and as far as I can see the USB 3 hub the Drive is connected to is working. Have tried in USB 2 but with same result.

The system is a brand new ASUS F55C with 8GB ram and a 120GB Samsung 840 SSD.
I get the same error when I try on other F55C's I have...
I don't usually need to downgrade, but my client will not use 8 so I'm stuck.

Aug 22, 2014I downloaded months ago Onenote 2013 free onto my Win 8.1 laptop.
I wanted to use Onenote like I did when I had 'Evernote' installed such as being able to send information to Onenote by right clicking and easily sending it that way, but it never worked as easily as 'Evernote'.
I'm sidetracking: I clicked on 'Onenote' and it said it was 'corrupted and unreadable'.
As I don't use the installed 'Onenote' on my laptop I decided to uninstall it using 'Advanced uninstaller pro 11'.
'Advanced uninstaller pro 11' looked for leftover files in the registry and it found over 400!
That is the most that has ever been found for any program I have uninstalled before and am worried about deleting these registry which have been found.
I don't want to leave all these registry behind but I don't know if all of them are safe to remove.
Does Microsoft have a 'Onenote 2013 free' uninstall tool?

Nov 6, 2013I just bought a new dell xps 15 which is really awesome by the way but the qhd resolution makes certain programs unusable. It's 3200x1800. So for instance I play online poker and when I downloaded a poker program the game client came up like 4 inches wide on the screen so the text is unreadable. I thought I would just have to use a smaller resolution like 1080p but the size of the game client didn't change when I changed the resolution. Resizing the client windows doesn't resize the text so what are my options? I am using windows 8.1 ....

Whenever I try to open a document from USB drive that has the format associated with a microsoft office application I get a BSOD. I ran an SFC scan, and it came back clean. Nov 6, 2013If I use the search function, not in a browser, but in the OS itself, it will bring up a Bing page of results. This page fills the entire screen and has no apparent way to close it. This also happens when I open a PDF using the native Windows 8 reader - the pdf opens to a full page with no apparent way to minimize or close it.
That's just the beginning of the problem. I have been just ignoring what is on that full screen by opening the desktop and just going about my work (hate the tiles, but that's a different story). However, from time-to-time, when I'm moving the mouse cursor and doing nothing but moving the mouse cursor, that full screen Bing page or PDF will just pop to the front unbidden. I can obviously reopen the desktop again, but this is a hassle, as this page-behind just keeps popping up and interupting my work. Worse, once it happens, it seems to happen again and again as I'm making the first mouse movement after moving back to the desktop. I literally have to open the desktop again and again 5 or 6 times before that document behind stops popping up. When I TRY to reproduce this, I can't. I can't seem to make the document behind pop up just by moving the mouse - but when I don't want it to happen, it does.

Unable To Print Multi Page Document?
Jul 8, 2013I have an Epson BX635FWD printer that has and does work perfectly with Windows XP. I have recently purchased a Lenovo B540 with Windows 8 and it loaded the print drivers immediately. I thought how easy it was but have since found that it will not print a multi page document in full, but will suddenly stop halfway through a page. I made do by printing a couple of pages at a time, but then tried to print a 10 x 15 cm photo and it would only print 1/3 before stopping and spitting the paper out. The number of pages it prints correctly before giving an error message and ejecting the paper is inconsistent.
I have reloaded driver 1.32 (for Windows 8) from the Epson site twice and I have also gone back to the disc supplied with the printer and reloaded the driver from there.
Search Returns No Results - Can See File In Document Folder
Aug 12, 2013Today the search function randomly stopped working. I can be clicked on the Documents folder, type in the file name and it says no results found. I can be looking at the file and it says no results found. Until this afternoon it was working just fine!!

Apr 24, 2014I have a HP Deskjet 1515 which I just purchased 4 days ago. When I attempt to print anything from specific programs (more on this) nothing happens. I can see that the print job enters the print queue but it immediately disappears. There is no error given.
The strange thing is that certain programs can print, while others appear unable.

I am using Windows 8.1 x64 (legal copy) and it is fully updated. All of my software is legal and updated.
I can print to other printers, network and local.
Other computers can print to this printer (all are Windows 7 x32).
Printer is set up on USB002 Virtual Printer Port.
I have tried using the drivers that came with my printer as well as downloading the latest drivers from HP's website.

The consensus as far as I can see seems that there is a problem with the Windows System Files and that I need to use SFC to repair it.
This is what I tried to do.After running SFC in an elevated command prompt and running "SFC /SCANNOW" I received a message saying that SFC could not fix something. I tried running the command multiple times (and also from boot).
I then proceeded to use Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management (DISM) tool to update the files and correct the problem. This appeared to work because after running DISM I then re-ran SFC /SCANNOW and received no error messages.
Here are some other things that I have tried in addition to the above with no effect:

But now when I open Word or double click on my document it just puts it on the taskbar and doesn't open the window on the screen. When I hover over it on the taskbar it shows the docs that are open but I can't get it max. I restarted and the same thing.
