Portrait And Landscape Button
Dec 10, 2013I have accidentally hit the Landscape mode button.
Now the screen is running parallel to the keyboard rather than vertical like normal.
How do I change it back?

Jun 16, 2014I've changed the Desktop background image which looks great when the Surface is in Landscape mode, however when I change to portrait mode the image is cropped.
Is there someway I can resize the image automatically when changing mode's?
Windows 8 Snap Feature Portrait Mode?
Feb 27, 2014So I've never seen how 2 apps snapped look when using a tablet in portrait mode. All I seem to see is landscape snapped apps. So can this even be done on a tablet.
It looks rather useful, but not sure if it can be used in landscape and portrait?
Windows Start Button Is Gone
Dec 21, 2013Today I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (I think that's the version). I was pretty much forced to do the update. Now, my start button is completely gone and replaced with something that takes me to the Windows 8 screen, which I absolutely hate, because I can't control anything on it. I have installed a utility that let's me use the desktop, and it basically looks like Windows 7, which worked perfectly fine. It seems like all my apps are gone and this new button is linked only to the Windows 8 screen. How can I get my Windows 7 profile back?

Jun 30, 2013I have my taskbar pinned to the left side of the screen, and it seems there is no way to disable the start button.
If I have the start button in the top left corner (which is fine - I can deal with it), the start charm shouldn't still be available in the bottom left. If I don't have the start button, than the charm is fine.
Why can't we turn off the start button? What was MS thinking with this setup? It's totally useless unless you keep their taskbar on the bottom!

Aug 8, 2012Why doesn't Microsoft just remake the start menu with 2 sides, one to open the classic windows 7 start menu. And the other one to open the Metro UI. Honestly it seems to be the best way to do it I like using both although can't live with out the old start menu.

Mar 18, 2014I'm working on a gal's computer (HP 2000 laptop). Her problem? When she hit the power button, the computer would not boot. No BIOS screen, no boot screen, no HP screen. Nothing. Just a blank, black, backlit screen with no activity on the HDD indicator LED. If I remove the hard drive, however, then the computer will boot to the point of giving me a message instructing me to install a hard drive.
So you'd imagine the issue is with the hard drive. I hook her HDD into a free slot on my desktop to check the device. I'm able to access all files and it checks out okay. But if I put it into her computer, all you get upon touching the power button is a blank, black, backlit screen.
I'm assuming at this point that the boot partition on her HDD may be corrupted and a reformat and clean install are needed. I was able to back up her personal folders. However, there is no COA sticker on her computer (thus no Windows Key), just a "Windows 8" sticker. She said her computer did not come with a set of discs either (HP puts recovery data on a second HDD partition, which I am unable to access at this time). I asked her to contact HP and request a set of recovery discs for her computer, so that is where the process is at right now: waiting for a reply from HP.
Desktop Button On The Start Screen?
May 10, 2013Is there a way to make the desktop button/tile/link to the desktop on the start screen to be a different image besides what is really on your desktop screen?
For example, lets say I want a photo of deep space on my tile desktop button, but don't want that image as my desktop screen. Just the tile.
No Response From Shut Down / Restart Button?
Dec 6, 2013the last 3 days I have not been able to shut down my pc, when I press the shutdown/restart button nothing happens. I also get no response from anything if I right click on the start button and try to use any of the options in the menu the device manager, control panel nothing from the right click menu on the start button reacts when I press it. Even when I press power from the right side on the settings menu from the charms, shutdown/restart nothing happens. I have not made any changes to the pc recently. There is nothing in event viewer its just nothing happens the computer keeps working like I never pressed anything...The only way I can shut the PC off is by holding down the power button..

Aug 20, 2014When I try clicking the start button, it doesn't work. I move my mouse to the right side of the screen, and the bar doesn't come up. Same with moving my mouse to the top left corner of the screen. I checked the properties by right clicking the task bar. The corner navigation options are checked off to show them when I move my mouse to the different corners.

May 12, 2014 what .exe file is hidden under the "Shutdown" button in the Charms bar. Most of you will probably think it's just the system32/shutdown.exe, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Why do I care and how do I know? I have a Razer Mamba with charging dock that needs voltage on USB when the PC is off. The problem is that when I shut the PC with a shutdown.exe shortcut, the USB voltage goes off (and no, I can't enable it in my BIOS), whereas it miraculously stays on when I turn my desktop off using the Charms bar button.
I tried the hibernate.exe shortcut too, but this only hibernates the PC, without closing the apps - this I don't need nor want.
I need the proper .exe file for setting up a shortcut for my keyboard so that I can close the PC with one button, instead of going through all that Metro bullshit hassle.
I browsed the web in search for all the shutdown types used in Windows 8.1, but generally found only three methods: full shutdown, hibernate or sleep.

Jul 8, 2014My start menu button completely disappeared from the taskbar. I am using DisplayFusion and Start8 so I am not sure if those could cause this issue. I am able to still access the start menu easily by clicking the windows key but would love to fix this.
Due to DisplayFusion I can still see the start menu button on the other taskbar but Start8 does not want to style it or anything.

Jul 3, 2014(I am running 8.1 on an MSI GT60 2OC). Everything will be fine for a good while and at some point when I switch to the start menu after scrolling my mouse out of the bottom left corner and off of the start button, the task bar and start button will drop down and dispensary like it should. However when I scroll over the corner again, it doesn't pop back up, I cant swipe up or down for my charms bar on the right or see my running apps on the left everything is unaccessible. It can be fixed temporary by re logging but its only a matter of time before it happens again. I have done many hd wipes and re-installations to resolve this issue. Nothing works.
I have some apps installed and some drivers. I also did a bios update and some firmware updated and at this point I am thinking it may be them. I cant clean boot to troubleshoot because sometimes the bug wont show up for a whole day. Im a new win 8 user. 1 weird thing I noticed was that like my problem also had Revo Uninstaller on their computer, a program that I also have installed..
Accounts :: Unable To Log In As Administrator - Yes Button Disabled
Sep 4, 2013I purchased an HP Notebook PC 2000-2c20NR last week that came pre-installed with Windows 8. Somehow - I think it was when I was trying to change settings to where I do not have to give a password everytime I log in - I became lost as the Administrator. I am the only one who uses this laptop.
So, now I am stuck, unable to change settings, install/uninstall programs, etc. Everytime I try to change something, I am given this error screen:
As you see, it asks me to type an administrator password, then click Yes. The "Yes" option is greyed out and disabled. I have tried everything I could find to change this, but in order to make any changes, I have to be the Adminstrator (which I am), but this error screen pops up with any and everything I do. I have even tried a System Restore/Recovery, but I can't, because the UAC will not let me continue as Administrator.
The status of my account currently names me a "local user."
I have Norton Internet Security 2013 installed and no viruses, etc are present.

How To Use Windows Logo Button As Custom Hotkey
Sep 15, 2014Is there any way to set up a hotkey using the windows logo button in sequence with another? for example "Win + Z" or "FN + Win". I have classic shell downloaded on my windows 8.1 laptop, and I want to set up a hotkey for the metro start screen. I'm aware of how to make a hotkey through a shortcut's properties, but there's no way to use the windows button as one of the keys.
