May 15, 2014I have been getting multiple BSOD over the past couple weeks. Its got to the point where I can't really do anything even remotely "taxing" on my computer without an impending reboot. Playing more lightweight games such as Hearthstone or WoW are guaranteed crashes, as is listening to music in the web browser while doing anything else. Last night in a desperate attempt to correct the situation, I ran the Windows 8.1 refresh option. Unfortunately shortly after rebooting into the fresh install I had another BSOD and multiple more today. Ive run chkdsk on my harddrive, and ran memtests on my RAM, all came back clear. I went so far as to remove my graphics card in an attempt to isolate any potential hardware failure, but on the integrated graphics I received the same errors.

Jun 17, 2014I am having some problems with 3 years old PC. Only while playing games (Civ 5 - Heroes & Generals - Rise of nations) I suffer from freeze/crashes, PC doesn't show a BSOD, the mouse pointer works normally it doesn't freeze (until I try to alt+tab or alt+ctrl+del), and from my speakers I can hear looping sounds.
The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I try reinstalling windows, and the problem still exists.My BIOS, drivers* and OS are update, I perform a memtest for 6 hours and show no errors, I can run prime95 + kombustor and everything is fine, no temps problems, GPU never go over 68c and CPU at 58c, and no crashes.
DSIM commands show no errors neither.
*I tried latest NVIDIA drivers, and old ones, im actually using 334.89 version, and the problem persist.

Dec 2, 2013It's been happening for awhile now since windows 7 through to windows 8 and i'm not sure why but it usually happens when i play games even with lowest settings, whenever it freezes it makes me have to force shut down manually.

My question is what role does my CPU play in gaming? Is it a big thing? I always thought that having a strong, powerful graphics card was more important that a powerful CPU.
Is there a particular thing that the CPU does in PC gaming that makes having a strong one essential?
Gaming :: Windows 8 64bit PC Going Off While Gaming
Jan 10, 2014Okay, this is the second time with a different game this is happening, at very specific points in the game, My Laptop's screen blacks out and goes off, the computer stays on with lights and stuff but the screen just stays off like when you put off a pc but the fans keep running, I then have to forcefully power my pc off to put off the entire system.
I don't think this has anything to do with my Laptop's temperature as I've just had the vents and heat sinks ventilated recently, also cause the laptop goes off at just one scene in a particular mission in both games, Assassins Creed and Far Cry 3.
I don't think its my PC's specs either cause I went through the requirements of these games before getting them. I've not been able to go past the stages in the game where my PC goes off.
My Laptop's specs:
HP Envy M6-1105DX : AMD A10-4600M 2.3GHz, 6GB RAM, Windows 8, 64-bit.

Mar 23, 2014After a couple of weeks using 8.1 (x86) and after Windows 7 Ultimate (x86), I have come to the conclusion that it is a much lighter and faster OS than 7. Mafia 1 for instance runs on full specs without a single hiccup no matter what. I know it's an old game but it's also very demanding, especially on my system which is not exactly up to date. I can also play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on medium settings very well indeed, and that's a demanding game on the system. GT Legends by Simbin is a reasonably demanding game especially on full graphics options and with a full grid of cars and it's running well on Windows 8.1. My onboard Intel graphics adapter is coping a lot better with these games than it did on Windows 7 Ultimate. I had to find a Windows 8 driver for it (I've found it on here) then all my games started to run very well considering my old laptop specs.

Windows Start Button Is Gone
Dec 21, 2013Today I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (I think that's the version). I was pretty much forced to do the update. Now, my start button is completely gone and replaced with something that takes me to the Windows 8 screen, which I absolutely hate, because I can't control anything on it. I have installed a utility that let's me use the desktop, and it basically looks like Windows 7, which worked perfectly fine. It seems like all my apps are gone and this new button is linked only to the Windows 8 screen. How can I get my Windows 7 profile back?

If I have the start button in the top left corner (which is fine - I can deal with it), the start charm shouldn't still be available in the bottom left. If I don't have the start button, than the charm is fine.
Why can't we turn off the start button? What was MS thinking with this setup? It's totally useless unless you keep their taskbar on the bottom!

Aug 8, 2012Why doesn't Microsoft just remake the start menu with 2 sides, one to open the classic windows 7 start menu. And the other one to open the Metro UI. Honestly it seems to be the best way to do it I like using both although can't live with out the old start menu.

Mar 18, 2014I'm working on a gal's computer (HP 2000 laptop). Her problem? When she hit the power button, the computer would not boot. No BIOS screen, no boot screen, no HP screen. Nothing. Just a blank, black, backlit screen with no activity on the HDD indicator LED. If I remove the hard drive, however, then the computer will boot to the point of giving me a message instructing me to install a hard drive.
So you'd imagine the issue is with the hard drive. I hook her HDD into a free slot on my desktop to check the device. I'm able to access all files and it checks out okay. But if I put it into her computer, all you get upon touching the power button is a blank, black, backlit screen.
I'm assuming at this point that the boot partition on her HDD may be corrupted and a reformat and clean install are needed. I was able to back up her personal folders. However, there is no COA sticker on her computer (thus no Windows Key), just a "Windows 8" sticker. She said her computer did not come with a set of discs either (HP puts recovery data on a second HDD partition, which I am unable to access at this time). I asked her to contact HP and request a set of recovery discs for her computer, so that is where the process is at right now: waiting for a reply from HP.
Desktop Button On The Start Screen?

For example, lets say I want a photo of deep space on my tile desktop button, but don't want that image as my desktop screen. Just the tile.
No Response From Shut Down / Restart Button?
Dec 6, 2013the last 3 days I have not been able to shut down my pc, when I press the shutdown/restart button nothing happens. I also get no response from anything if I right click on the start button and try to use any of the options in the menu the device manager, control panel nothing from the right click menu on the start button reacts when I press it. Even when I press power from the right side on the settings menu from the charms, shutdown/restart nothing happens. I have not made any changes to the pc recently. There is nothing in event viewer its just nothing happens the computer keeps working like I never pressed anything...The only way I can shut the PC off is by holding down the power button..

Aug 20, 2014When I try clicking the start button, it doesn't work. I move my mouse to the right side of the screen, and the bar doesn't come up. Same with moving my mouse to the top left corner of the screen. I checked the properties by right clicking the task bar. The corner navigation options are checked off to show them when I move my mouse to the different corners.

May 12, 2014 what .exe file is hidden under the "Shutdown" button in the Charms bar. Most of you will probably think it's just the system32/shutdown.exe, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Why do I care and how do I know? I have a Razer Mamba with charging dock that needs voltage on USB when the PC is off. The problem is that when I shut the PC with a shutdown.exe shortcut, the USB voltage goes off (and no, I can't enable it in my BIOS), whereas it miraculously stays on when I turn my desktop off using the Charms bar button.
I tried the hibernate.exe shortcut too, but this only hibernates the PC, without closing the apps - this I don't need nor want.
I need the proper .exe file for setting up a shortcut for my keyboard so that I can close the PC with one button, instead of going through all that Metro bullshit hassle.
I browsed the web in search for all the shutdown types used in Windows 8.1, but generally found only three methods: full shutdown, hibernate or sleep.
