Why doesn't Microsoft just remake the start menu with 2 sides, one to open the classic windows 7 start menu. And the other one to open the Metro UI. Honestly it seems to be the best way to do it I like using both although can't live with out the old start menu.

Today I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (I think that's the version). I was pretty much forced to do the update. Now, my start button is completely gone and replaced with something that takes me to the Windows 8 screen, which I absolutely hate, because I can't control anything on it. I have installed a utility that let's me use the desktop, and it basically looks like Windows 7, which worked perfectly fine. It seems like all my apps are gone and this new button is linked only to the Windows 8 screen. How can I get my Windows 7 profile back?

If I have the start button in the top left corner (which is fine - I can deal with it), the start charm shouldn't still be available in the bottom left. If I don't have the start button, than the charm is fine.
Why can't we turn off the start button? What was MS thinking with this setup? It's totally useless unless you keep their taskbar on the bottom!
In 8.1 if I right-click the start-button to get up the new "simplified gray start menu" there are options like "Programs and Features", "Device Manager", "Command Prompt" etc. When I click on these they no longer launch, nothing happens.

What i did: Disabled npu.sys to avoid the memory leak, other than that i did no tweaks or something.
A reboot is solving the problem, but i wont reboot my laptop every hour or so..
When I try clicking the start button, it doesn't work. I move my mouse to the right side of the screen, and the bar doesn't come up. Same with moving my mouse to the top left corner of the screen. I checked the properties by right clicking the task bar. The corner navigation options are checked off to show them when I move my mouse to the different corners.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy start menu button completely disappeared from the taskbar. I am using DisplayFusion and Start8 so I am not sure if those could cause this issue. I am able to still access the start menu easily by clicking the windows key but would love to fix this.
Due to DisplayFusion I can still see the start menu button on the other taskbar but Start8 does not want to style it or anything.

(I am running 8.1 on an MSI GT60 2OC). Everything will be fine for a good while and at some point when I switch to the start menu after scrolling my mouse out of the bottom left corner and off of the start button, the task bar and start button will drop down and dispensary like it should. However when I scroll over the corner again, it doesn't pop back up, I cant swipe up or down for my charms bar on the right or see my running apps on the left everything is unaccessible. It can be fixed temporary by re logging but its only a matter of time before it happens again. I have done many hd wipes and re-installations to resolve this issue. Nothing works.
I have some apps installed and some drivers. I also did a bios update and some firmware updated and at this point I am thinking it may be them. I cant clean boot to troubleshoot because sometimes the bug wont show up for a whole day. Im a new win 8 user. 1 weird thing I noticed was that like my problem also had Revo Uninstaller on their computer, a program that I also have installed..
Microsoft Is bringing back the start button in Windows 8.1. but it might not be the same as your remembered it!

I noticed that i can bring up a desktop button by hovering the mouse pointer on the lower left corner but that is lame. I just want my desktop picture button back . also is there any way to have windows 8 open on the desktop ? I do not want to deal with the endless stupid steps required just to open the computer . first i have to raise the unnecessary full screen picture . then i have to type in my password . ( i do not want to type in my password because i am the only person who ever uses my computer and if someone else did i wouldn't care anyhow ) . then i get to the start menu which is filled with buggy programs that never work and now my desktop button has mysteriously disappeared .
I would like for windows 8 to have the option to simply open on my desktop without me doing anything . no password . no start menu . no full screen picture that i have to raise ( what is that thing for ? ) . I downgraded to an older version because the newest one had a look that literally appears to be the Shell gasoline logo! At least with this version it simulates the Windows color scheme.
I am using Version 3.6.7. The current version is 3.6.8. but it has a blued out background with the Shell logo prominent.
If it were not for Classic Shell I would not be using Windows 8 at all.
I'm getting confused about the new start button that was supposedly to come with the Win 8.1 update. I cant' find anything different from Win 8. Is the start button the icon found in the lower left corner of the screen?...or on my computer keyboard?...it looks like a window. It also is not locked down at all - it can do virtually ANYTHING your current pc can do (though you might prefer to only use the apps that are ported over to metro)

Kick to curb the DVD drive install a new caddy and new SSD. (in same , it works) mirror old hdd to new ssd, using farstone, (the best and free) moved, ssd to hdd, main location. hdd out of system. Boots and runs fast as lighting,now I put in the HDD to the caddy, yes, i know that only one disk can be active. but how do you flip that bit, not plugged in, sure.'?now the dumb, BIOS EFI in the HP can not select boot sequence at all, it has just this boot manager, that is not accessible..at all.it runs a while then wants to boot to hdd, i can't stop it nor fix bios, but (esc+f9) force boots work to SSD. as expected.So i try partition-wizard, it shows HDD as active and can not set to inactive, (it's not fully gpt aware? but works great all other modes)i hide all those partitions and the boot up ignores hidden flag....
i run from elevated CMD.exe, MS- DISKPART and select (old windows (my label) vol 2. i command Inactive to old windows part. vol2 it errors out, saying,can only be used no MBR disk.i read up on that and it meant, GPTs don't have active flags (bits) ok, im game...odd how windows 8 DISKPART is not up to the task for GPT, or I dont know Diskpart anymore....?
I want to keep the HDD in the system. for the D:recovery partition, that HP needs. and will not fit on SSD.
BIOS set to NON secure boot, for all this. testing.did not try SATA legacy mode, (it gives warnings in BIOS not to use that) i moved this hdd to non efi bios system desktop, with win 8.0 and same deal. I wonder what my win7 Desktop would do?, wreck the GPT , structures? i'll not do that.

View 16 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a gal's computer (HP 2000 laptop). Her problem? When she hit the power button, the computer would not boot. No BIOS screen, no boot screen, no HP screen. Nothing. Just a blank, black, backlit screen with no activity on the HDD indicator LED. If I remove the hard drive, however, then the computer will boot to the point of giving me a message instructing me to install a hard drive.
So you'd imagine the issue is with the hard drive. I hook her HDD into a free slot on my desktop to check the device. I'm able to access all files and it checks out okay. But if I put it into her computer, all you get upon touching the power button is a blank, black, backlit screen.
I'm assuming at this point that the boot partition on her HDD may be corrupted and a reformat and clean install are needed. I was able to back up her personal folders. However, there is no COA sticker on her computer (thus no Windows Key), just a "Windows 8" sticker. She said her computer did not come with a set of discs either (HP puts recovery data on a second HDD partition, which I am unable to access at this time). I asked her to contact HP and request a set of recovery discs for her computer, so that is where the process is at right now: waiting for a reply from HP.
the last 3 days I have not been able to shut down my pc, when I press the shutdown/restart button nothing happens. I also get no response from anything if I right click on the start button and try to use any of the options in the menu the device manager, control panel nothing from the right click menu on the start button reacts when I press it. Even when I press power from the right side on the settings menu from the charms, shutdown/restart nothing happens. I have not made any changes to the pc recently. There is nothing in event viewer its just nothing happens the computer keeps working like I never pressed anything...The only way I can shut the PC off is by holding down the power button..
