Windows 8.1 Will Not Completely Power Off Randomly?

Nov 22, 2013

My computer won't power off completely, SOMETIMES, i'm going nuts here.

Here are my system specs:
ASUS Forumla IV latest BIOS
ASUS GTX 690
2x4 2333 GB RAM
ANTEC 1200W PSU
1 SSD & 4 HDD
Creative ZXR SB

using latest drivers for all the above

sometimes the PC power off completely when i shutdown, sometimes not, the screen would go black but the power won't get turned off, the fans are still spinning and no BSOD...I have to either hard reset or hold the power button to turn it off.

I tried resetting CMOS, turning on and off the Fast boot feature in power options

With or without overclocking

Is there anyway to diagnose or investigate what is causing the PC not to power off completely?

Windows 8 64 Bit - System Will Freeze Completely?

Jun 15, 2013

I just completed a brand new build and then installed Windows 8 64 bit on the brand new PC. It installed without problems and boots up ok. But while in windows, The screen will go black for a few moments on occasion, then the no video input message comes up, then after a few moments the screen will come back. Happens randomly. Also, the system will freeze - either for a few moments and then come back, or it will feeeze completely and i have to force power down with power switch. Also, I was online and trying to download and the system was stuttering - I could literally hear the hard drive make a stuttering noise. And my progress bar on screen would pause for split seconds at a time.

I have not yet installed any software, but the Nivida software automaticaly installed when windows was setting up. Here are the specs of my new build:

Asus P8Z77-V Mobo
Intel i5 3570K unlocked CPU
Xigmatek Durin D982 heatsink/fan for CPU

Maintenance :: System Memory Not Used Completely

Nov 22, 2013

I have Windows 8.1 x64 installed. In the task manager, it shows me that 35% Memory is used. Now, when I add up all the Memory MB's within the task manager it goes to around 1100MB maximum.. On my machine, I have 8GB RAM and it also shows the same in the system about window since I have the 64-bit windows installed.

Doing a quick calculation of (1200/8000)*100 = 15..So, my system memory should display 15% used. Then why is it still showing around 37%? I have also tried running virus scans but have no infections as such... Also, one of the biggest memory hoggers is the 'Service Host: Local System'.

Computer Completely Freezes When Gaming

Jan 1, 2014

I recently upgraded both my motherboard to an Asus M5a99FX PRO R2.0 and my CPU to an AMD FX 8350 and I've been experiencing some complete freezes playing games like Battlefield 4, Shadow Warrior and Skyrim. In my old build (with a Gigabyte 880GM-USB3L and a Phenom II x4 955BE) the same games would perform okay and I never really experienced any crashes or freezes.

The problem now is that at what are apparently random intervals no longer than 15 minutes during gaming my cpmputer will completely freeze, audio stops, I cannot open the task manager and I even tried toggling Caps Lock and the LED on my keyboard wouldn't toggle. I would leave it stuck there for a couple of minute but nothing would happen, forcing me to hard reset the system.

I can use the computer for regular browsing and video streaming (I think I can alsop play some older games without freezing) without freezes too, which is kind of odd.

My PC specs would be:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bitMobo: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0CPU: AMD FX-8350 (not overclocked)GPU: Nvidia GTX 660Ti GC 3GB (not overclocked either)Memory: 2 modules of some 4GB Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 RX 650W
HDD: Seagate ST2000DM001 (2TB)

So far what I've done to try to find a solution to the freezing is rolling back video drivers, then installing the most recent ones again, upgrading to the most recent version of the BIOS for my mobo and my chipset drivers, I've checked the connections on the mobo to make sure everything is installed fine, I've reseated the RAM and the GPU, I've run 2 cycles of memtest86+ to find no errors, I've also run Furmark's GPU burner and CPU burner (both for about 20 minutes) and I haven't crashed on them. My temperatures also don't get too excessive (CPU does't go over 43C and my GPU doesn't go over 64C). I also removed the Realtek Audio drivers and the freezing persisted.

PC Shutting Down But Won't Turn Power Completely Off

Mar 3, 2012

When Windows 8 is shutting down, it won't turn power completely off. The HD-led is lighting allthough the power-led has turned off. If I then press powerbutton, nothing happens. I have to take power-cable out of the wallsocket, wait about 20 seconds until the HD-led turns off. After that I can again turn my PC on as normal.

Booting into Windows 7, and letting it shut down, it works normally.

Is this a driver issue with my mobo? (ASUS P7P55D-E) ...

Security :: DP Doesn't Disable UAC Completely?

Sep 17, 2011

this tweak has been floating around but didn't spot it here on EF so just a heads up. This is for those of you who disable UAC on their systems and have been getting annoyed that DP doesn't disable UAC completely even though the slider is pulled all the way down and the user is Admin.

So, just open regedit and locate this key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem

In the right pane look for EnableLUA and modify its value to 0. Close regedit.

Done.

Disclaimer: This is not meant to encourage people to ditch UAC or even to use this method. Peeps who disable UAC are expected to know their way around.

Warning Setting the EnableLUA to 0 will make all metro apps stop working until you set it back to 1 and restart the computer.

See here instead: User Account Control (UAC) - Change Settings in Windows 8

Security :: How To Completely Disable Windows Defender

In 8.0 there was a setting for disabling Defender completely through gpedit.msc, now in 8.1 they added a bunch of new settings in the Defender tab but none that clearly states the disabling of Defender, maybe I'm missing something here?.

Security :: How To Disable Windows Firewall Completely

Sep 15, 2014

Whether or not it is possible to turn the Windows Firewall completely off, so that it does not turn itself on, whenever I join a new public network?

I have tried the following command in the command prompt: "netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off", which should do the trick, but doesn't. It was run in administrator mode, so that's not the problem.

The reason that I need this done is, that I play as a DJ using Rekordbox connected to the mixer, through an ethernet cable. Now, for some reason my computer identifies this as a public network, every time I connect the 2 devices and then turns on the Windows Firewall (which blocks the computer and mixer from communicating, which is BAD!).

Every time it activates itself, I have to go into the control panel and turn it back off, which is sort of tedious...

I do have my own antivirus and firewall software installed, so I need the Windows part completely off.

Windows 8.1 - ACL Permissions Get Messed Up?

Sep 15, 2014

I just freshly installed Windows 8.1. So here it goes. I use folder redirection for my user profile folders. I'm redirecting the folders

from: C:UsersKevin

to: C:UsersKevin

Before redirecting them though, I copied the exact ACL's (permissions, owner, inheritance, etc.) of the C:Users and C:UsersKevin folder to the D:Users and D:UsersKevin folder, respectively.

I then created the appropriate user folders under D:UsersKevin and did the folder redirection. The problem is that any file/folder inside the D:UsersKevin folder (doesn't matter if it is deep in the child folder as long as the parent is the D:UsersKevin folder) that I "share" the ACL permissions get messed up. When messed up, I mean that if I share the folder to the owner, which is me, the permission that will be under the security tab will ONLY BE ME. It seems that it's breaking the rules of NTFS permissions wherein everything is cumulative.

This does not happen if I do the same in the C:UsersKevin folder or even in the D:Users folder.

Originally, the permissions of the D:UsersKevin are SYSTEM, Administrators, and Kevin with Full Control. That is the exact same ACL for the C:UsersKevin folder.

I tried adding the authenticated users (modify) and users (read & execute) and that seems to solve the problem.

Maintenance :: System Restore / Refresh Not Working Completely

Oct 20, 2013

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Debugging :: BSODs Completely At Random Even After Reinstalling Windows

Apr 7, 2014

I've had a mild BSOD (mostly page_fault_in_nonpaged_area and rarely irql_not_less_or_equal) problem since I built my computer (3 years now) but after trying to figure out what caused them and finding nothing I just gave up and dealt with them. Recently I reinstalled Windows and went from Win 7 to Win 8. I formatted everything and apparently it is not a virus or software problem. The reason I dealt with them was because they weren't coming up as often as they do now. They are so frequent I can't work or do anything anymore.

After browsing a few forums I learned it might be a memory error. So I tried removing the RAM sticks and shuffling them around the slots. I ran memtest86+ for around 12 hours (making 10 passes) and it found nothing.

I also read it might be the hard disk's fault. I tried unplugging every one of them (besides the one with the system) and ran CHKDSK and nothing.

They appear completely at random; closing or opening Windows, surfing the net, browsing data on disks, etc. I am completely lost.

How To Save To Folders Without Permissions Messages

Sep 9, 2013

I'm on a new laptop running Windows 8 Pro, and I'm running into permission issues. I just created an icon (using Axialis Icon workshop), and tried to save it to a folder which I myself created. But I got this message:

C:Program FilesIconsIN-USEGS.ico
You don't have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.

Would you like to save in the My Pictures folder instead? No, I wouldn't like to save in My Pictures. I never use it. How can I get permission to save to the folder I want? I'm a sole user; I'm a member of administrators; I've tried (unsuccessfully so far) to give myself permission to run all programs without being nagged.

I suspect that taking ownership of the C:Program Files might do the trick, but it seems like an extreme measure. Should I simply follow the steps in Brink's tutorial 'How to Allow or Deny Access Permissions to Users and Groups in Windows 8'?

Local HDD Asking For Admin Permissions After Format

Jun 10, 2013

This problem occurs on a local, non-USB HDD.

I recently formatted my computer, installing Windows 8. And I realized one of my HDDs was acting weird. It doesn't allow Chrome to save files, it asks for UAC permissions when I try to delete, move or rename files. I looked it up, decided it was about ownership and permissions. Permissions were already set, full control. But ownership was wrong so I fixed it, rebooted my computer and problem still persists at the moment.

When I right click and go to the properties of a folder, it says "Read only". When I uncheck it and Apply, it "applies" it to the subfolders with a loading bar but it still remains "Read only".

Permissions For Windows 8 Users Assigned From Server

Mar 23, 2014

Is it may orientates how to add permissions for users who log on using the server?

In Windows 7, they were more stricter for example when user want install programs.

Is there a program that such causes can block the installation of programs, or hide the drives on your computer? It can be installed on a server or locally - with indifference.

I heard something about a Microsoft program, which was in the name of "policy", but unfortunately I can not find it.

Another matter. How a computer (model) duplicate to the other 20? For a backup? By the server? I mean, I do not have to install the 19 remaining, but install programs, just as soon as cloned together with all the settings.

Win 8 Inheriting Permissions Causes ACCESS DENIED With Folders

Mar 5, 2012

Manage Permission Inheritance in Windows 8 | VISHY Media on technologies and gadgets

Ever get this message or worse, one that does not have the access button attached? you cannot read it, you cannot look at it and you cannot delete it.

There are even worse issues where the permissions are GREYED OUT and you cannot do anything to them. (see below for a solution)

Windows 8 Consumer Preview has a robust permissions scheme that is more geared towards business users rather than err, consumers. An inherited permission means that Windows 8 set the Permissions on a volume, drive, or folder, that same set of permissions will be applied to all folders underneath it.

The solution is to ENABLE INHERITANCE to the volume drive or folder to gain access:

Another solution is to ADD a group called Everyone and give them full control:

Finally, there will be folders where everything is GREYED out in the permissions tab so it seems to be impossible to make changes. EDIT: Check below to see possible solution!

This REALLY sucks and the only solution I have found is a reg hack called "Take Ownership"

Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

Install the reg (right click and install) then right click on the folder or drive and select Take Ownership. That will allow you to go back into permissions and select full read/write controls by users.

Network / Sharing :: File Permissions And Read Only?

Jun 18, 2013

Two user accounts, both administrator level. I have a file in my documents that my wife's account can READ but cannot SAVE. I've gone in through User Accounts and given her account full permissions (full control with all the boxes checked), but it always reverts back to her not being able to save any file in my directory.

FWIW, I have all accounts on a separate D: drive. Only windows 8 and programs are on C:.

Also, Read only status. I see the dot (not a check) when I select properties from "my documents". I remove the dot, task window comes up and all the file names whiz by. Then, I look and ... again, the dot is present.

What is the purpose of the dot vs the check mark. They seem to have the identical effect on sub-directories and files within sub-directories.

Viewing Hard Drive From Another Computer - Permissions

Oct 23, 2013

Im a computer repair tech, so I'm always hooking up hard drives from other computers to backup data or run certain off-line tasks

With windows 7, I could access the entire contents of a drive without any issues (via external USB dock)

Including documents and settings<user name> (Windows XP drives) or users<user name> (Vista, 7)

But with Windows 8, when I try to view the contents of the users folder, I always get

"You don't currently have permission to access this folder" - Click continue to get permanent access....etc

I never had to do this with Win7.

Now if I hit continue, I can indeed view those files and do my thing...but here's the issue: If Im trying to get a backup of somebody's dying drive, I can't afford the added stress of Windows making permissions change to an entire user folder...nor do I really want to make changes on the files (which the hard drive will be going back into original computer) by adding my credentials to every file/folder in there.

I just want to be able to get the files without any of the permissions prompts, something Windows 7 never asked for.

Is there some sort of setting I can do, registry or whatever....to eliminate this? I have UAC turned off, made some changes in secpol.msc.... so far no luck
