Local HDD Asking For Admin Permissions After Format

Jun 10, 2013

This problem occurs on a local, non-USB HDD.

I recently formatted my computer, installing Windows 8. And I realized one of my HDDs was acting weird. It doesn't allow Chrome to save files, it asks for UAC permissions when I try to delete, move or rename files. I looked it up, decided it was about ownership and permissions. Permissions were already set, full control. But ownership was wrong so I fixed it, rebooted my computer and problem still persists at the moment.

When I right click and go to the properties of a folder, it says "Read only". When I uncheck it and Apply, it "applies" it to the subfolders with a loading bar but it still remains "Read only".

Accounts :: Set Permissions To User AppData Local Temp Folder

Jul 4, 2013

The Windows 8 starts it seems that i loose the permissions to the temp folder. As a result some applications using that folder to launch (for example Google drive) fail giving me an error. Another example are some installation files not starting because the temp folder cannot be used.

So, i have always to go to temp folder and manually set the permissions to have all working.

Following instructions from a forum thread I got as far as downloading oscdimg.exe into the Win7_ISO directory.

However whatever I try, full path, etc., I get this error Code: oscdimg.exe : The term 'oscdimg.exe' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operableprogram. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.

Windows 8.1 - ACL Permissions Get Messed Up?

Sep 15, 2014

I just freshly installed Windows 8.1. So here it goes. I use folder redirection for my user profile folders. I'm redirecting the folders

from: C:UsersKevin

to: C:UsersKevin

Before redirecting them though, I copied the exact ACL's (permissions, owner, inheritance, etc.) of the C:Users and C:UsersKevin folder to the D:Users and D:UsersKevin folder, respectively.

I then created the appropriate user folders under D:UsersKevin and did the folder redirection. The problem is that any file/folder inside the D:UsersKevin folder (doesn't matter if it is deep in the child folder as long as the parent is the D:UsersKevin folder) that I "share" the ACL permissions get messed up. When messed up, I mean that if I share the folder to the owner, which is me, the permission that will be under the security tab will ONLY BE ME. It seems that it's breaking the rules of NTFS permissions wherein everything is cumulative.

This does not happen if I do the same in the C:UsersKevin folder or even in the D:Users folder.

Originally, the permissions of the D:UsersKevin are SYSTEM, Administrators, and Kevin with Full Control. That is the exact same ACL for the C:UsersKevin folder.

I tried adding the authenticated users (modify) and users (read & execute) and that seems to solve the problem.

Accounts :: Standard User Permissions?

Sep 8, 2013

I set up my administrator account and standard user account. Both are Live. Alienware Laptop. On the standard account, users can not even run a game (original Fable that requires disk to start up) without it asking for my password. Which is not always convenient seeing as how I work and all. How do I allow standard users to run programs but not make changes to the computer? So far I have not seen any threads about this. I've been going around in circles in control panel searching for anything that would allow me to grant permission permanently but so far I have found nothing.

How To Save To Folders Without Permissions Messages

Sep 9, 2013

I'm on a new laptop running Windows 8 Pro, and I'm running into permission issues. I just created an icon (using Axialis Icon workshop), and tried to save it to a folder which I myself created. But I got this message:

C:Program FilesIconsIN-USEGS.ico
You don't have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.

Would you like to save in the My Pictures folder instead? No, I wouldn't like to save in My Pictures. I never use it. How can I get permission to save to the folder I want? I'm a sole user; I'm a member of administrators; I've tried (unsuccessfully so far) to give myself permission to run all programs without being nagged.

I suspect that taking ownership of the C:Program Files might do the trick, but it seems like an extreme measure. Should I simply follow the steps in Brink's tutorial 'How to Allow or Deny Access Permissions to Users and Groups in Windows 8'?

Security Permissions On Network Folder?

Jan 20, 2014

I have a 1TB HDD connected via the network. 90% of the folders on this drive are fine, but a few were created by previous Windows installs.

I needed to delete the folder but it won't let me do so. I've tried fiddling with the security settings but they wont "stick". See the attached for what I mean.

I can't do anything with this folder. I can rename the folder, but everything inside the folder and the folder itself cannot be removed.

Permissions For Windows 8 Users Assigned From Server

Mar 23, 2014

Is it may orientates how to add permissions for users who log on using the server?

In Windows 7, they were more stricter for example when user want install programs.

Is there a program that such causes can block the installation of programs, or hide the drives on your computer? It can be installed on a server or locally - with indifference.

I heard something about a Microsoft program, which was in the name of "policy", but unfortunately I can not find it.

Another matter. How a computer (model) duplicate to the other 20? For a backup? By the server? I mean, I do not have to install the 19 remaining, but install programs, just as soon as cloned together with all the settings.

Win 8 Inheriting Permissions Causes ACCESS DENIED With Folders

Mar 5, 2012

Manage Permission Inheritance in Windows 8 | VISHY Media on technologies and gadgets

Ever get this message or worse, one that does not have the access button attached? you cannot read it, you cannot look at it and you cannot delete it.

There are even worse issues where the permissions are GREYED OUT and you cannot do anything to them. (see below for a solution)

Windows 8 Consumer Preview has a robust permissions scheme that is more geared towards business users rather than err, consumers. An inherited permission means that Windows 8 set the Permissions on a volume, drive, or folder, that same set of permissions will be applied to all folders underneath it.

The solution is to ENABLE INHERITANCE to the volume drive or folder to gain access:

Another solution is to ADD a group called Everyone and give them full control:

Finally, there will be folders where everything is GREYED out in the permissions tab so it seems to be impossible to make changes. EDIT: Check below to see possible solution!

This REALLY sucks and the only solution I have found is a reg hack called "Take Ownership"

Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

Install the reg (right click and install) then right click on the folder or drive and select Take Ownership. That will allow you to go back into permissions and select full read/write controls by users.

Network / Sharing :: File Permissions And Read Only?

Jun 18, 2013

Two user accounts, both administrator level. I have a file in my documents that my wife's account can READ but cannot SAVE. I've gone in through User Accounts and given her account full permissions (full control with all the boxes checked), but it always reverts back to her not being able to save any file in my directory.

FWIW, I have all accounts on a separate D: drive. Only windows 8 and programs are on C:.

Also, Read only status. I see the dot (not a check) when I select properties from "my documents". I remove the dot, task window comes up and all the file names whiz by. Then, I look and ... again, the dot is present.

What is the purpose of the dot vs the check mark. They seem to have the identical effect on sub-directories and files within sub-directories.

Viewing Hard Drive From Another Computer - Permissions

Oct 23, 2013

Im a computer repair tech, so I'm always hooking up hard drives from other computers to backup data or run certain off-line tasks

With windows 7, I could access the entire contents of a drive without any issues (via external USB dock)

Including documents and settings<user name> (Windows XP drives) or users<user name> (Vista, 7)

But with Windows 8, when I try to view the contents of the users folder, I always get

"You don't currently have permission to access this folder" - Click continue to get permanent access....etc

I never had to do this with Win7.

Now if I hit continue, I can indeed view those files and do my thing...but here's the issue: If Im trying to get a backup of somebody's dying drive, I can't afford the added stress of Windows making permissions change to an entire user folder...nor do I really want to make changes on the files (which the hard drive will be going back into original computer) by adding my credentials to every file/folder in there.

I just want to be able to get the files without any of the permissions prompts, something Windows 7 never asked for.

Is there some sort of setting I can do, registry or whatever....to eliminate this? I have UAC turned off, made some changes in secpol.msc.... so far no luck

Windows 8 Permissions - How To Disable Security Settings

What I want is a foolproof way to disable ALL security settings on Windows 8 in such a way that I will NEVER see that "access denied" message again. I wish to do this for entire hard drives, boot drives as well as data drives.

Lost Permissions / Tiles Are Missing And Can't Reset

Mar 24, 2014

Since receiving my laptop back from it being repaired (Fan wasn't spinning then the laptop wouldn't turn on after trying to fix it myself) it turns on and the fan spins just fine although I am having numerous software problems.

First, I can't open my photos, music or documents folder (videos seems to be fine) and they don't have their original icons anymore, when I try to open the folders using the file explorer nothing happens, when I tried to open folder using the tiles, the folder would load then close without warning or reason and when I tried opening files by right clicking > open with, it would open then a banner will show saying. 'You don't have permission to access this' (Or something similar).

I am able to access my photos and such by going to: Computer > Local Disk (C: ) > Users > [My name], in there I can find it all but it's not where it should be.

After this I decided to restore my pc to an earlier point, but since then my tiles have vanished (Photos, music, Skype, videos, people and so on) although the Store tile seems to have stayed and is working fine.

While trying to reinstall the tiles from the store, the store says I already have the tiles but I can't find them anywhere.

I eventually decided to reset my system and reinstall windows (I would be reverted to Windows 8 not 8.1) although while attempting a reset, a banner shows up saying. 'There was a problem while resetting your PC'. When clicking 'Check for solutions to this problem' it would minimise the window to the desktop and then nothing would happen.

I want my old PC back, before it needed repairing!

Hard Drive Randomly Locked - No Write Permissions?

Jul 18, 2013

Something terrible happened to my computer today. I'm honestly not sure exactly how, but my hard drive locked itself. I was trying to install FL Studio 11, when it kept saying I didn't have write permissions. I thought that the installer might be corrupted, so I downloaded it again. It still had the same issue. I thought maybe it was an issue with Windows 8, so I burned it to a USB and connected my iPhone to iTunes to try and sync some music to it before I restored Windows. Not only did the driver not install, but iTunes closed and said I either don't have read/write permissions or iTunes is on a locked hard drive. Frustrated at this point, I turned my computer off and booted from my Windows 8 install USB.

Windows 8 will not install because it says that my hard drive is locked so I can't install Windows 8 on the hard drive. I tried installing it again and the installer said that the temporary installation files could not be copied to the hard drive. I can't boot into Windows now, it just stays stuck at the flashing symbol (I've left it there for about 5 hours now, still nothing). I have a lot of files that I really need for making my music and a lot of unrecoverable pictures, so I really need to get this computer fixed.

At the moment I'm installing Windows on a USB in hopes I can boot from that and move all my files to a backup PC and then format my hard drive, but I'm not 100% sure that will work. I checked my BIOS and my hard drive is not locked with a password or anything, so this just doesn't make sense to me. It might have something to do with all the partitions I've made in the last few days to install Linux and I decided I didn't need it so I deleted the partitions and extended my main partition again.

Also, I've already tried automatic repair about 6 times nothing has worked, it says it can't fix my PC. I fixed this problem by downloading Hiren's Boot CD, going into Mini XP, moving all my files to another laptop with USB, and formatting my hard drive completely.
