View 1 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a Win 8 PC (gateway) to replace a Win XP PC (Compaq); both are desktops. The OS (XP) crashed weeks ago; although it was re-installed and seem to work, it was just too much work to bring it up to date. Therefore the new Win 8.
I have a large collection of files on the XP that I would like to bring over to Win 8. The XP cannot yet be connected to the Internet; but its USB ports works fine.
Any way I can connect the two through USB to copy files from the XP to the Win 8?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was attempting to copy some files to my DVD. I selected them and chose "Send to" and selected my DVD drive. I now got a window saying, "Files ready to be written to the DVD".
(1) How do I get it to write the files.
(2) If I wanted to cancel the operation how do I do that?
Every time I put a blank DVD in the drive it comes up with that same message and I can't seem to be able to get rid of it.
I have a large collection of car photos spanning several years and growing, +300,000. I am now trying to combine them by year of make. There are many files with the same name like "1930 CarMakerName." I cannot take the time to review every conflict at transfer time, much quicker and easier to see them in an Icon view.
Is there any way to have them automatically renamed like every other previous version of Windows that I have used?
Got Win8 Pro Retail genuine installed and have a multi partitioned PC.
I am Administrator, and I have UIC set to its lowest possible setting.
I cannot copy any files to the C: Drive (root)... every time I get an error message and it will not let me do anything with the root.
So, I ran gpedit.msc and did these steps..
1. Run gpedit.msc, navigate and browse to Computer Configuration--Windows Settings--Security Settings--Local Policies--Security Options
2. Set policy User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators - Elevate without prompting
3. Set policy User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation - Disabled
4. Set policy User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Disabled
OK, now perfect - I have full control of the root drive again... But this sparked another major issue with the 'modern apps' (metro)...
All modern/metro apps will now NOT RUN because they want UIC turned on (as in change those settings back I just tweaked).....
As soon as I turn UIC back on.... metro apps work - and I am blocked from my root drive again.
Is there any sort of advanced options when a file conflict is encountered when copying files? The "Skip x file(s) with the same date and size" option is nice, but I'd often like to skip files which only have the same size and the date may be the same or different - it's unimportant. Is there any way to do this? It would also be nice if, when copying a folder for example, it would display specifically which file was being transferred at the time.
View 6 Replies View RelatedLocation is not available to mapped network drive in Windows 8 I'm trying to copy a file from my mapped network drive, which is something I've done 1,000+ times in Windows 7, but for some strange reason I get a location unavailable error when trying it in 8. I tried deleting and remapping the drive and then tried restarting the computer. Neither of these resolved the issue. I've noticed that I can copy it to my desktop but nowhere else. See the attached images for more information.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI read the tutorial on building a Windows EFI USB stick from the Windows ISO. I want to build an EFI/USB from an ISO of a bootable third party application, which is not designed to boot from UEFI. First, I went through the steps in Diskpart. Then, I copied the files from the third party ISO to the USB stick. Screenshot 34 shows the objects listed from the third party ISO. The second screenshot (35) shows what I have on my Win 8.1 ISO. I tried to just copy the efi folder and bootmgr files from the Win 8 ISO, but my Win 8 system (a VM) didn't like that at all. !

I have a Desktop and a Laptop, both wirelessly connected to a router, and part of a HomeGroup. Sharing over HomeGroup works like a breeze. Occasionally I need to copy something large between the 2, so I connect an Ethernet cable.
To actually transfer the files, currently I have to : disconnect wifi from both, else step 3 won't work assign 192.0.0.0/24 addresses to each of them, setting no gateway try to browse the network, upon which I can force the conversion of network type to private upon which I might still have to manually type in the IP address in UNC format (192.168.1.3)I have to authenticate as my user account on the other machine. Then I have to share the required folders... Sometimes "pulling" the files doesn't work, upon which I have to assign write permissions onto a folder on the destination computer and "push" the files. Ugliest thing I have encountered.
I hate this process with a passion, because I have to do it every time. I have no clue how or why Windows decides a particular network to be "Identified" or "Unidentified". I would like some way of forcing Windows to treat all PC-to-PC connections as private (this arrangement is obviously VERY private, about as private as it gets), so that sharing is enabled, and so that it is recognized as a part of the HomeGroup, and then if I change the order of preference to Ethernet > WiFi, I should be able to have it automatically transfer over WiFi+Ethernet, just WiFi, or just Ethernet depending on which link is up....
There is 3 hdd's installed to my rig:
1 is 55gb kingston ssd where i run my windows
2 is 1tb hitachi where i keep my games and other junk
3 is seagates 250gb laptop hdd.
The main problem was that sometimes when opening or just clicking some folders freezes the file explorer and it crashes after it, so i tought to format the second hdd to make it work better now it seems work ok except for moving files from hdd to another.
When copying the copy speed just at random point drops to 0% and leaves the hdd 3 to hang 100% and the hdd 2 is dropping to 0%.
What i have tried:
I ran hdd regenerator and 18 bad sectors were fixed Also tried to change sata ports That's not much but can't figure anythin else for now and i am starting to suspect that my hdd is gone bad :/ also when downloading ~100mb file from internet it makes same thing but i don't know is it same problem...
I have an ASUS RT-AC68U router with 9 DBI dual band antennas. I need a program that allows me to copy and paste files to the external hard drives which are connected to the router's USB ports. An example of the application I am seeking is called "Silex Virtual Link", I need one like this, I used to use this 1 on my old D-Link DIR-825 router but it is not working with my new ASUS router and ASUS tech support couldn't solve anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy c drive is starting to fill up, so I decided to move and reorganize some "stuff". Everything went fine and I have a full backup on an external 3TB drive. I also have two separate 2 TB external drives and all is fine.
My last task, before moving/deleting all my pictures and videos (30.000 in total) off my c drive, was to format all my other internal drives and/or remove/upgrade them to bigger ones and this is where I ran into a problem.
I have win 8.1 with all service updates as of today. My computer specs are all in my info.
I want to remove the drive G: and replace it with a 2TB one, I deleted everything from the old drive, but when I removed it, I got a boot error.
What I found was, that the hidden files in the picture bellow are still on it and needed to boot.
How can I move these files onto my C: drive?
I found one tip, to use this command: bcdboot c:windows /s c: but it didn't change the fact that the computer doesn't boot without the G: drive attached.
Here is a picture of my drives.
I am unable to get my Windows 8.1 installation to use anything but the US keyboard format, despite the fact that all my keyboard and regional settings are UK.
In particular, I go into the "Keyboard" application in Control Panel, and English (United Kingdom) is listed as the first item.
N.B. English (United States) is listed as the 2nd item in this list, and I can't remove it (I remove it from the list, but it is put back in the list when I restart the keyboard application).
Whatever I do, the keyboard layout remains the same - for example, the " and @ keys are the wrong way round.
I have made the appropriate changes to my regional settings so that my short and long time will display in the 24 hour format. However, when I first launch Win 8 the ore-login screen still displays the time in the 11 hour format.

But, what it did was reformat my drive to 32GB.

I recently formatted my computer, installing Windows 8. And I realized one of my HDDs was acting weird. It doesn't allow Chrome to save files, it asks for UAC permissions when I try to delete, move or rename files. I looked it up, decided it was about ownership and permissions. Permissions were already set, full control. But ownership was wrong so I fixed it, rebooted my computer and problem still persists at the moment.
When I right click and go to the properties of a folder, it says "Read only". When I uncheck it and Apply, it "applies" it to the subfolders with a loading bar but it still remains "Read only".
