I am using IE11.x for my default browser but have a site that I go to often that requires Chrome.
I am wondering if there is a way to set a desktop shortcut for the specific url and have that url opened in chrome while keeping IE as my default browser?
Some how, some way I have turned on some kind of Google/Chrome desktop on my Asus ME400C. It opens up when I click on the chrome icon or something brings it up (see attached image).
How to turn this off, all I want is chrome not Google's ?am desktop. Second, how do I change the default browser?
Running windows 8.1 and i use 3 browsers, my main (default) is Opera, the issues i have are opera is set as default browser in opera settings, but for instance when checking emails say overclockers uk i see something catches my eye, i click it and link opens in opera, not in win 8.1, it pops a box up asking how do you want to open this type of link, firefox, google chrome or look for app in dam app store [URL] ....
I go to setup default programs to set associations and guess what, opera is not in the list [URL] .....

I'm running Windows 8.1 and think I have run into the same issue [URL] .....
My Anti-Virus has picked up a program which has removed the default page in question from my Chrome. However, when I open Internet Explorer, that page- "[URL] ...." opens and I have done everything I can to remove it. I've went into the Internet settings and removed it from default pages, etc and changed my homepage, but the page still persists. I believe I have also removed any relevant suspect programs from 'add or remove programs' but the problem page still persists.
Again, the antivirus seems to have removed all trace of 'iStartSurf' from my Google Chrome. I do not use Internet Explorer but these kinds of issues make me quite paranoid. Just whatever I do, Internet Explorer opens with that iStartSurf page.
I've put the iStartSurf page on the blocked site list for Internet Explorer which causes it to load no media on the page when IE opens up. However I'd still like to have it removed altogether.
My IE browser opens at 150% zoom after I change it to 125%. How to make the 125% setting stay put?

I recently got fed up with Firefox (for being too slow, and buggy). so I installed Chromium (not chrome. Chromium, the open source version of Google chrome without that spyware Google puts in it's browser)
But I have a big problem with it - I can't set it as my default browser. If I go to the settings and and click the big button that says "Make Chromium your default browser" all I get is this.

I've seen many tutorials about adding default software, but for some reason chromium isn't listed in the "default apps" section of control panel. Is there a way to navigate to a certain .exe to add it as a default?
Windows 8. All I want to do is pin a desktop icon to the taskbar. I've gone to every app on this pc, right clicked, left clicked, middle finger clicked, nose clicked, no luck.
Don't want to over simplify, but wouldn't it be great if one of those computer guru's had thought of this instruction?

I used to have a desktop shortcut on the taskbar so necessary for getting back there without wading through tons of open apps..
Now I cannot put a desktop shortcut on the taskbar have been trying and failing.
If I go to the start tile board and click desktop I just get back to the top open app and then have to minimise and minimise to get the desktop.

I'm really particular about the way I use my desktop and what I would like to do is force the network flyout to appear when I hover over the right edge of my monitor.
Normally this flyout appears when you click the network connections icon in the tray but I am looking for a way to bypass clicking the icon. The end result should be the network connections flyout appearing with no mouse clicks or key presses.
I can simplify the request: I would like a piece of software that will allow me to perform custom functions based on whether or not I hover over a region of the desktop for a set amount of time.
I wonder is it possible to click on an app, a tile or anything else connected to the start page side of windows 8 and be able to put it a short cut or Icon on the desktop page for it, so it can be opened from the desktop.

Setting up a new 8.1 PC for a customer. He was 97 years old on the 11th and still computer active.
Obviously, not going to get him accustomed to the new Metro tile format. Installed Start8. I want to be able to place a couple of shortcuts to the Desktop from the Game apps, mainly the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. (I have him setup with a Microsoft account.)
I'm installing all my programs on Windows 8.1 and I'm finding that most of my desktop shortcuts will give me an error whenever I try to run them. Every time a program creates a desktop shortcut the icon changes to this default icon. One thing to note is I have changed the default program files destination folder to my HDD D drive and also kept a SSD C drive program files folder. However no matter what drive I select to install it gives me an error "path is not specified".

This is a simple executable shortcut that you can pin to the taskbar or use on the desktop to enter the Start Screen, the only reason I made this is for use with Tihiy's StartIsBack as he enabled the Right Win Key to enter the Modern UI Start Screen instead of the Desktop Start Menu, unfortunately I don't have a Right Windows key so this seemed like a good solution instead of having to use the Charms Bar.

My parents borrowed my laptop, and somehow deleted the desktop app that brings up your desktop from the new Windows 8 start menu.
I've tried to get it back but it looks like they deleted it right from the computer, is there any way to get it back?
There is usually a big rectangle that says desktop, and when you click it your desktop comes up, but we can't seem to figure out how to find it and put it back!

It happened after my computer froze and I had to press the restart button manually. To be honest my desktop is loading up slower too. My desktop doesn't have a black wallpaper, it's original and blue hence why I am confused.
I have created a shutdown shortcut on my Win 8.1 tablet that works nicely.
My tablet has a physical button on the side that is used to put the tablet into instant sleep mode.
You press the button and the tablet immediately turns off (goes to sleep).
You press the button again and the tablet immediately turns on again (comes out of sleep).
I would like to create a shortcut on my desktop (NOT the Metro start screen) that will function the same way the
physical button does, that is, the tablet will immediately turn off (goes to sleep).
Someone posted something close, but not quite the same thing; ....powrprof.dll.SetSuspendState Sleep. When I create a shortcut with the above code the tablet actually *shuts down*. I know this because when I press the power button the tablet goes through the cold start up routine.
I would like the shortcut to do EXACTLY the same thing that happens when I press the power button on the tablet; go *immediately* into sleep. And pressing the power button after that should turn the tablet *immediately* back on.
I'm using Windows 8.1 and it's modern internet browser (which opens in full screen etc etc), just because it's fast (I tested it, faster than anything else) and looks great. My problem is not THAT big, but if there is an solution I'd like to hear it.

Am "using new HP laptop 2000-2d27dx Windows 8.1. Only way I shutdown or restart is going to "charms" panel - Settings - then click Power off icon and choose Sleep, Shutdown or Restart. Is there a way to put a SHORTCUT for Shutdown and Restart on the desktop and/or the Start screen?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI got a nasty Malware program "WeCare" from the Imgburn Install (I think) and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to get rid of all the stuff it put in the registry. That seemed to work. I also ran CCleaner a couple of times. Again that seemed to work. However, now SOME of the shortcuts that I created for standalone programs - IBT, HWinfo, Prime95, SSDLife, and RegEdit show as a blank page with the upper right corner folded. I have also run into this issue on a W7 system but managed to force Windows to pick up an Icon from a different source. What file can I delete that would cause Windows to rebuild the Desktop Icons?
I found a .bat file that deletes the Icon Cache and rebuilds it. That solves my immediate issue...but...still curious on who or what caused specific Icons to go to default or whatever.
for Windows 7, you released some registry entries to add My Computer/User Folders/Control Panel onto the desktop for all users, which I've incorporated into an image to use with MDT. Anything similar for Windows 8? It's difficult to have to do this for individual users.

After a system startup, (as administrator) the shortcut can "Disable" the network connection by right clicking the shortcut and selecting "Disable". Later, when the shortcut is right clicked again, the context menu still says "Disable". I would call this a failure to update the shortcut, but what is actually happening.
In order to get the shortcut to "update" itself, I have only to open the Control PanelNetwork Connections window. Magically, the shortcut will then reflect the true state of the network when right clicking the shortcut on the desktop.

I went to go set photoshop as the default for opening a jpeg, and I noticed this weird option on the list that says %1. I don't know how to get rid of it it is very annoying. I tried cleaning the registry with CCleaner and removing "%1;" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileAssociation. Nothing has worked so far, What is %1 anyway?

It shows up on the system in my new win8.1 system, but when I try to use CTRL + P to print from Firefox, nothing happens, and its not an option using the context menu. So am I not supposed to print anymore unless I use the apps supplied by windows?
If I select the print option in the hidden menu o the right (Charm?) I get a message "you can only print from an app" Is a browser not an app? I thought that an app was just slang for a program.
I assume that there is a way to print from a browser, or even to an adobe pdf.
