Network / Sharing :: VPN Connection With No Name - Cannot Remove It From System

Jul 25, 2014

I have a VPN connection that was created, but somehow has no name to it, and I cannot remove it. I am running WIN 8.1 64BIT on a Dell E7240.

I have tried to remove it from the Windows 8 interface, I have also tried removing it from Network and Sharing Center. I am lost at this point as to how to remove this connection. Screen shot below for more information:

Network / Sharing :: 8.1 PRO System To Establish Remote Desktop Connection?

Apr 26, 2014

I cannot get my 8.1 PRO system to establish a Remote Desktop connection on either the Internet or my home LAN. Router has port 3389 set for port forwarding, aVast Firewall allows port 3389 in and out. Have even tried with aVast turned off but can't get it to work. Have run a number of Port Checkers and all show 3389 as locked or unavailable, but unfortunately do not detect whether it is an issue with the router firewall or aVast firewall. However, all is not lost; have discovered a free application named Team Viewer which does the job very nicely and is a lot easier to set up.

Network / Sharing :: Win 8.1 - No Output Connection But Input Connection Is Normal

Feb 19, 2014

I have strange network problem these days. I have a desktop PC and installed Windows 8.1. And I have a LAN. The gateway IP address is 192.168.2.1.

The network works fine when I start the PC. I can access Internet with IE, I can access the config pages of my gateway and I can SSH my local File server. It's a synology ds212j. I assigned static IP address 192.168.2.18 to it and name it as "home_ds". I add dns entry in file "hosts".

But there will be very strange problems if the PC keeps running about 2/3 days. It seems I can't connect to other computers from my PC. No IE, no SSH, no ftp.... But ping still work. These is no network device listed in my network folder. But I still can access the mapped network drives.

For example, I can ping www.google.com, I can ping 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.2.18 and "home_ds".
K:> ping 192.168.2.1Pinging 192.168.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 13ms, Maximum = 61ms, Average = 32ms

But when I try to telnet and ssh, all failed.

I tried:
telnet www.google.com 80
telnet 192.168.2.1 80
telnet 192.168.2.18 22
all failed.

I tied putty, msn, outlook,... all failed. But my wife's PC works normally at the same time.

In the network folder, there should be a list of all my network devices, including my wife's PC and my File server. But it's empty if this problem happens. However I can add them mannually and I can access the network drives.

And I can connect to my PC from my wife's PC with remote desktop.

If I logout and login again, the network will recover except 1 new problem. That is I can't access the network drives of my File Server with computer name "home_ds", but IP address works. And I can ping it with computer name.

K:>ping home_ds
Pinging home_ds [192.168.2.18] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.2.18: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

A restart will solve both the above 2 problems. But I don't want to restart my PC so frequently.

I tried to solve this problem by update windows and drivers but failed.

Network / Sharing :: Internet Connection Sharing - Unidentified Network?

Apr 23, 2013

I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.

My Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C855-29N

what to do, maybe i am not setting up the connection sharing properly?

Network / Sharing :: ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) For Xbox Live On Windows 8

Jan 3, 2014

Okay, so in Windows 7 I am able to connect my wireless to my phone, and run an ethernet cable over to my Xbox. If I use the ICS feature and configure it under services to allow ports 88 and 53 UDP, it works fine. This also allows my Xbox to seemingly add to this list of ports as it finds necessary.

The issue is however, with Windows 8, although I can connect to Xbox Live the same way, it does not seemingly allow the Xbox to add more ports that it deems necessary. This leads to that NAT error message that I am actually trying to do this as a way to bypass it.

In Windows 7 this only works if the connection is set to Home (not sure about Work), but not public. I'm curious if the reason this does not work in Windows 8 is that Windows 8 does not have a Home option, but rather only Private or Public settings. There is some small setting buried deep somewhere that I just need to change to treat it like Windows 7 allows Xbox to treat home networks and configure/add ports automatically.

Network / Sharing :: Network Drive Connection Takes Long Time

Sep 28, 2013

I have 2 PC's. Both are now running Windows 8. The main PC was running Windows 7 and I there mapped a network drive (z to the Windows 8 PC. It worked very nice. The second PC was also shown in "networks" in "my Computer" right after boot of Main PC. So network for sharing is set up properly on second PC.

After installing Windows 8 on main PC, it is still working, but the time spend waiting for the network drive is waaaaay longer now. The name of second PC "Photo-PC", is shown right after boot, but when I first click on the name, and get this error:

Networkpath not found. Errorcode 0x80070035

If I then wait about 20-30 seconds and then click again on "Photo-PC" then I have access to all shared drives, included my mapped network drive Z:

How can I eliminate this 20-30 seconds delay after boot?

I have given up setting up a homegroup, never had it to work, but "oldfashioned" network drives used to work

Network / Sharing :: Sharing WiFi Connection To Another Computer Via Ethernet

Jun 16, 2013

My ISP provides service only via 802.11. I use laptop A most of the time. The captive portal for the service provider only allows one login per account at a time. The policy is intended to prevent multiple people sharing one account. It's just me, I'm the only user, but very occasionally I'd like to have a 2nd laptop access the internet simultaneously. No abuse, just the simple convenience of not having to logout from A if I need to use B for 30 seconds.

What I want to set up seems simple and it probably is:

WiFi Internet <---> Laptop A <---> ethernet cable <---> Laptop B

Such that Laptop B can share A's active WiFi connection without having to request its own unique address from the ISP.

At present, Laptop A has its network interfaces set up so:
- WiFi is connected, active, functional. Selected the "Yes turn on sharing and connect to devices" in sidebar.
- Under the wired network properties IP Version 4, I manually set addresses to be
IP 192.168.10.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 0.0.0.0

Laptop B has only a wired network, set to
IP 192.168.10.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.10.1

A & B can connect directly to each other, share folders, etc.

What do I need to do in order to get laptop B to transparently use A's WiFi connection? My guess is that A needs to be set up to do some routing between the internet side and the 192.168.10 subnet, and B needs to be set up to look to A as its "ISP" ... but I don't know where to begin.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 Network Connection Properties Not Saving

Oct 3, 2013

I have up until a few days ago been able to modify and save my network properties ok. I connected a new DisplayLink USB docking station that lead to an update of some sort. I believed this to be to do with associated drivers. I let this go ahead and it may well have nothing to do with the problems I have been having.

First of all I couldn't even see the IP parameters and kept getting an error as follows:

"In Order to Configure TCP/IP, You Must Install and Enable a Network Adapter Card"

The wired and wireless was working in environments where I could use DHCP so I was confident the hardware was ok. Uninstalling the drivers and then updating them has got me passed this problem so I can see and edit the IP parameters. However now they are never saved. I edit them, close the window, re-edit them and they are back to automatic settings! I need to use static settings in the office.

So far as I can see there are 2 possibilities:

1. I don't have permissions to save these settings, wherever they are stored. But I have administrator permissions. Where are the settings stored? I have saved them before. How can I get access to be able to save them again?
2. Something else is overwriting the settings. How do I find out what and stop it?

Network / Sharing :: New Toshiba S55 B Getting Very Bad Internet Connection?

Sep 15, 2014

I'm new to Win 8.1 but I'm fairly tech-savvy. I've got a new Toshiba Satellite S55 B5289 with Win 8.1, connecting to the Internet via Time-Warner over wifi. I'd go into the details of the wifi and router, but given that I've got a month-old HP with Win 7, and a 2-year old Samsung Chromebook sitting here with the Toshiba, all three running Chrome as opposed to IE, and the other two getting significantly better speed, I don't think those details are really critical.

This problem has been going on since I brought the new laptop home, but I've carefully uninstalled all the bloatware that came pre-installed, and made the standard Chrome tweaks [unchecking the hardware accelleration] nothing has worked. Yesterday I took it to a friend who has a computer repair business and he tuned up a lot of the things inside Win 8.1 that I had no clue about - as I understood it, making 8.1 run Chrome without going *through* IE. I didn't pay as much attention to that as I should have, but essentially everything seemed to be working very well. His Internet connection, however, is lightning fast, and connecting to that wifi, things were downloading and running spectacularly well. Just what I'd expected - or at least hoped for - when I bought it.

Using it at home today, the problems have resurfaced. Loading emails, for instance, is not quite right. Images in the emails frequently don't load properly - it will stutter and often stops in the middle of an email. If I click on a link, there can be a significant delay before the page loads. Videos buffer every few seconds and even when I let the entire video load, it still plays spastically.

All of this is in Chrome, using tabs - which I always do. Yes, of course I could clear the cache, start fresh, use no tabs, let one thing load at a time, but that's not what I have ever done, so this is real world testing. The most telling detail, though is the download speeds I'm getting.

Running Speedtest on all three machines, the ping is basically the same, but on the Toshiba, it frequently can't even finish the download test. It just stalls to a halt. The Chromebook gets a download speed of 5.75 and the HP gets 21.31. We pay Time-Warner for 20, so I'd really like to see something like that on the Toshiba.

I constantly get the 'Error 800' message (Unable to establish the VPN connection).

Network / Sharing :: Internet Connection Unstable - Keeps Dropping?

Feb 1, 2014

Recently bought 3 laptops for the household (1 HP Envy TouchSmart m7 Sleekbook, and 2 Gateway NV570P10u Touchscreen Laptops)

Laptops came with Windows 8, I immediately upgraded to Windows 8.1 so I cannot say if things were working when I had Windows 8

I have all these laptops connected to the Internet via DLink-Dir655 Router. Additional devices connected to the router/internet are a wireless printer, server running Windows Server 2008, laptop running Windows XP Professional, and a laptop running Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium (along with couple cell phones running Android). All other devices have absolutely no connectivity issues ... Only the 3 laptops running Windows 8.1 keep giving us headache to a point we can hardly connect to the Internet using these (Winows 8.1) laptops

Interestingly, when I connect laptops via Ethernet cable connection is "little more stable" but I still get disconnects ("page cannot be displayed" errors) which leads me to the conclusion that it is not Wireless card always but Router or its settings are also playing a role.

We can focus on HP laptop to address this issue. It has Intel Centrino N-2230 as its built-in wireless card. Was having lots of disconnects or pages partially displayed but when I attached an old MediaLink Dongle (USB WiFi Card), internet connection became lot more stable. It is atleast 10x more stable compared to built-in wireless card but I still gets disconnected even with this dongle (and Ethernet cable as mention before)

PS: I tend to believe it is router's compatibility ... Otherwise why Ethernet Cable is giving the connectivity issue? But router is listed as compatible with Windows 8 on MS Website and Ethernet connection is 10x more stable than Wireless connection.
