Network / Sharing :: Increasing TTL For Access Point?
Jan 6, 2014
I have an university connection, which has TTL set to 1. I made an Access Point with my WiFi in laptop, however, I think that the TTL may cause that the Internet connection on my devices which are connected to AP is not working. I believe that changing TTL to a higher number should work, because I made the same thing with my router, and the Internet was working then.

I am sharing my internet connection with my roommates, but lately they have been using P2P to download stuff which uses almost all the internet speed available. I have set up QoS to limit their bandwidth in the main Asus wifi router which directly connects to the modem, it works great for a few days, but then it doesn't work anymore, I still get slow internet speed now. Since my flat has 2 wifi routers, one is the main and another one is set up with a different name but still connects to the main router via the ethernet cable a few metres away so that the wireless range is increased. Just for your information, the two routers are transmitting on different channel, if you think that might be the cause and they have different SSID.
Could it be possible that the QoS only works in the main wifi router and doesn't affect the other wifi router which my roommates also have access to it?
I have changed the default router password so I am sure that they have no access to the router's settings.

I have a HP Pavillion x360 i3 2 in 1 laptop. I am having problems with the wifi staying connected, and when the laptop is connected to wifi the internet speeds are slow. The speeds are slow as in I cannot stream videos on youtube without constant pausing, and even downloading something as simple as google chrome takes much longer than it is supposed to. In my house there are plenty of other devices that are connected including my old laptop, which, has no problems downloading/streaming and iphones, and an ipad.
All of the other devices except my new HP laptop has no problem streaming and downloading. The laptop is extremely new;less than a week old. I have tried updating the network driver, resetting the network driver, and disconnecting then reconnecting the wifi; yet the problem keeps occurring. I do have MacAfee so I guess that could pose a problem, but I am unsure. The adapter I use is a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565, with internet provided by COMCAST. It could be an adapter problem, but because of the other devices working fine I do not think that the problem is from the adapter. Also, the OS is Windows 8.1...

I am in the midst of the final steps in setting my my new Win 8 system.
I have a Win XP and Win 8 computer on my home network. I believe that I have set up file and printer sharing correctly. I can access the files and printer on the XP system from the Win 8 system. However, when I attempt to access the Win 8 files from the Win XP system, I get a long delay (about a minute or two) and then it asks me for the User Name & Password. I enter them and then and it works fine.
If I try to print on the printer attached to the Win 8 system from the XP system, I get a printer error unless I have already signed in with the ID & PW when accessing files. It never asks me for an ID & PW before attempting to print.
On the Win 8 system, I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings".
The Win XP system has previously been correctly sharing files and printers with another XP system for some time and I haven't changed any settings on the XP computer.
Both the XP and Win 8 systems are assigned the same Workgroup name.

I have two wifi APs in the home and only one has an Internet connection. the other is to access the wired LAN.
Last week I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and thought everything was going well until I started getting wired LAN dropouts.
I have traced it back to 8.1 handling connection to wifi APs. In Windows 8, I was able to have "Connect automatically" for BOTH wifi adapters on this laptop. Now when I try to connect to the non-Internet AP, Windows 8.1 announces (correctly) "Limited access" and that's what Windows 8 did too. BUT, Windows 8.1 waits a few seconds then drops the connection with a useless message, "how me solve connection problems," where there is NO problem. A limited connection for the AP to the wired LAN is OK as it was in 8.
So now I am stuck with no home LAN access unless I drop the Internet AP and connect to the LAN AP.
Also, in the great wisdom of 8.1, because it is only a "limited" connection, it does not remember the Passphrase so I have to type it in every time. So much for progress.
What to do to get past this behavior and have a "limited" connection as OK as it is with Windows 8?

As the title says, I'm getting a box saying "An unexpected error has occurred" whenever I try and access the properties window for my ethernet adapter. An unexpected power outage earlier in the day rendered my Windows 8 installation half messed up, leaving most of my drivers corrupt, so I had to attempt a refresh today, which solved most of my problems.
Unfortunately others like this have been cropping up since the refresh. I've looked for other possible solutions to this problem, and none have worked so far. Re-registering DLL files solved nothing, a system file check didn't do anything, and making sure I was in the correct user groups didn't solve anything either.

So I've some folders in my Desktop that I want to share with all the hosts in my network, so what i did was to create a new users and set all those folders only to read mode and, everytime I wanted to access the folders on those machines I simply access those folders via that user (in Windows hosts I just enter the network path like ip_addressfolder , windows then asks for the network password, I authenticate with that user and I have access to those folders.
The thing is that in my Surface RT (Windows RT -ARM), every time I try to access those folders via the method above (ip_addressfolder), I do see the folders, but when I double click on one of them in order to have access, instead of letting me authenticate, it simply returns the following error: Windows Cannot Access ip_addressfolder
Why is this so? Why doesn't Windows allow me to authenticate? Is this a limitation of the RT platform?

I can't seem to be able to access my other computer on my home network. Enclosed is an "ipconfig/all" screenshot. I just got a brand new Samsung Laptop for work. I dont know a ton about windows 8 either im fairly new to it. I work at a mental hospital doing security and we are allowed to have a laptop for over night shifts. I have an Alfa wireless antenna (cause i get low signal where im stationed) along with my normal laptop Wifi.
Heres the story. I was using my laptop antenna then out of no where it said "Identified Network (no internet access)" then my internet just stopped. I had this happen on my old laptop and it lasted a few days then worked like normal again. Then i switched to mt usb antenna and it worked fine for about 20 mins then all of a sudden it went it "Identified Network (no internet access)". So I was stuck with no internet. I tried looking up fixes on my ipod and i tried 3 Ways To Fix The Unidentified Network Error in Windows 8 and it didnt work I tried How To Fix Unidentified Network Windows - YouTube and it didn't work either. I'm dying here cause I have to sit in a room for 12 hours tonight with no way to keep my self from falling asleep or entertained.

This is a fairly new install of Windows 8 pro (within the last month), and while trying to set up a static ip up today I found that I was unable to access the network properties or disable the connection in the Network Connections. I am pretty stumped as I am the only user of this computer and from what I can tell have the correct permissions to do so. When trying to check the properties it tells me "an unexpected error has occurred" with no further information.

Pinging went fine. Accessing trough the webpage went fine.
But trying to access it with the explorer did not work. Not even when i tried it with the IP address.
After a system restore (before the update) everything works fine again. What settings are altered with the update? And why are settings altered in the first place. I will not use sky drive!

I use a USB modem in Windows 8.1 laptop. I want to share the internet to other devices by creating a hostednetwork. I used the netsh commands to create and start the hostednetwork. The wifi hotspot got created as 'Local area network connection *14. The internet from the USB modem was shared to Local area network connection *14. Other devices are able to connect to this and are getting IP address in the range of 192.168.137.X. The issue is that, the devices are not able to access internet. in troubleshooting this issue.
Don't give the instructions to create a hostednetwork or advice to use 'Virtual router plus'. I have already done all sorts of basic troubleshooting. Everything looks fine, but there is no internet connection to other devices.
I am able to share internet using the same USB modem with same method in Windows 7.

I have two pcs: an old desktop pc with windows xp and a notebook with windows 8.
Both computers are connected to the Internet through an adsl router and are also connected togheter, sharing files and folders through plain networking: HomeGroup would not work with windows xp.
Therefore, both computers are under the same workgroup, have different IP addresses and both share printers and folders.
I am able to log into my notebook [running windows 8] from my desktop pc [running windows xp] but not vice versa.
When my windows 8 machine prompts me for user name and password to log into my windows xp machine, my user name and password are not recognised.
I tried setting up the same user name with the same password on both machines, but whilst now I am able from my Windows XP machine to log directly into my Windows 8 machine, without entering user name and password, I am still receiving the 'The user name or password is incorrect' message from my windows 8 machine.
In both machine I installed Comodo Internet Security. I set up Comodo Firewall in my Windows XP machine to receive Remote Desktop connections.
Now I am able to connect to my XP machine from my Windows 8 machine via Remote Desktop. I am still unable to log into it from the Network folder, though.

I got this problem on my laptop Asus u38dt under Windows 8.1 a couple of months ago. It cannot connect to any network either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet (I tried an external USB Wi-Fi adapter as well, with the same result). In case of getting IP with DHCP, the network is shown as Unidentified network with no address assiged (IP is like 169.*). When static IP enabled, the network name is correct. But in both cases, connection is Limited and with No Internet access.
Connection can't be established with any router while other devices connect properly with them, so the problem is on the laptop side.
With all of this, any ping, even to 127.0.0.1, results in General failure.
When booted in Linux liveUSB, network works fine, so it is clearly not a hardware issue.
I tried resetting TCP/IP stack with "netsh int ip reset", reinstalling drivers, reinstalling the network adapter, and lots of other methods and still it doesn't work. Restoring system is not an option since I don't have any restoration point prior to the problem anymore.

I used to be able to access my c drive from the imac, now I cannot. It says I cannot access the folder because of permissions. I have full control to all, and I have all sharing turned on in Windows and the Mac. What could be causing this if the drive is shared? Like I said, I used to be able to do it fine, I can see it and there are certain files within the c drive I CAN access but nothing that I NEED to access. What is accessible now is more "public". I can see and access my externals as well it is just the C drive that is tossing the error.

Have two Windows 8 machines and one has a bunch of drives connected to it, that I use informally as a file server. Generally, what happens is the following:
1) Boot the Windows 8 "server" machine (Windows 8 pro, not a Server OS)
2) Boot my Windows 8 Pro desktop
3) Open file manager app, double-click the icon for the server PC -- and drive icons open
But sometimes, when I do 3), I get an error message saying that the machine name is incorrect (which it is NOT).
When I click Details on this to see what is wrong, it says "no issues" -- but still can't connect.
This is generally resolved by rebooting the "server" box (and trying again), or rebooting the desktop box (and trying again), or going through repeated reboots of each -- until a connection is finally made.
I've checked the sharing permissions on the "server" box and they are set as follows:
1) Each partition -- read by everyone (used by the desktops to download files)
2) Shared folder in each partition -- full control by everyone (used by the desktops to upload files)
And ... password-protected sharing is enabled, such that when a desktop first tries to connect, you must enter valid account info. After that, the info is saved and you don't have to enter it again.
I've gone through removing sharing and reapplying it several times, and there are no changes as a result. And it's always all-or-nothing, that is, it's never a situation where some of the shares can be seen/used but not others.
Problem is, there are times when I really need access to the "server" drives from the desktop and can't reboot either because something is going on that takes a long time and I don't want to have to restart it. I also run XP on this box (which never gave me these problems) -- and would really like NOT to go back to using XP.

I have an aunt who runs a business who wants to be able to let the computer run over night at her business and let me access it remotely to do the usual disk cleanup, defrag, virus scans and backups. Currently I have to go on Sundays to do all this and it is just a pain to sit there and wait for the task to complete. I did have some of these automated but some how under the computer illiterate they always get messed up.
Is there a piece of software (preferably free) that will let me access her machine to do all this? It doesn't matter if I need her on the other end to grant me permission to access the machine but I would rather do this from home during the night then do all this on a Sunday.

I'm trying to allow my win xp desktop pc to be able to access the hard disk on my win 8 laptop.
I put them in the same workgroup and then map the laptop's disk on the desktop pc. I can now see the laptop's disk in "network drives" in the xp but when I try to open it, I get an error message that I am not allowed to access it.
So, back at windows 8, I go to my disk Properties, Security tab and try to Add permissions for the winxp pc, which is what I think I'm supposed to do to solve my problem. However, at the "Select Users or Groups" window, I click on Locations and the only thing that appears is the Windows 8 laptop. Isn't the desktop pc supposed to be appearing over there as well? I can't add permissions for a pc that doesn't exist in Locations.

Yesterday I purchased a new Dell Laptop. In the setup and configuration the unit found my wireless network. I have two other PC's (not windows 8) two Kindles, two Cell phones and an IPAD on this router and all the Dell would say it it can't connect to this network. It won't ask for the passkey, it provides no additional information and I can't get online in my own network with this system. I can however log on to a neighbors unsecured network effortlessly.
I am using an old airlink 101 wireless router that has been trouble free for several years. I tried to log onto airlink for a support inquiry but they no longer provide support for this model.

If I connect to my VPN on my laptop as a remote dial in user from a remote location it works fine. I can access my IP camera and Dreambox satellite receiver by just typing in their fixed local IP addresses in my browser.
I can ping my desktop PC, BUT, I cannot access my LAN. Normally at home my laptop and PC connect on the Windows network automatically. I need to be able to access the PC on the VPN when away from home in the same way.
I have a fixed IP address with my ISP. Other fixed IPs are:
Router IP 192.168.75.1
LAPTOP 192.168.75.13
PC 192.168.75.19
I have tried the Windows and Draytek VPN clients with the same results. I have ZoneAlarm firewall but the problem is the same if I disable it. Antivurus is AVG Free on laptop and Avast Free on desktop.

I'm setting up a little media center (running Win 7) to connect to my TV. I was thinking about sharing one of the drives on the media center so I can access it from all my computers and put pictures, music and movies on it as needed.
I went to Advanced Sharing, checked the Share this folder box and put full control on Everyone. Nevertheless I'm getting an error when I'm trying to access the drive from my laptop (which is running 8.1). Says that Windows cannot access the drive. I have disabled password protections and all that but still nothing.
It does seem however that if I create a folder inside the Media center drive and share it then I can access it with no problems and add files and do what I want.
Perhaps that is what I'll need to do to bypass the problem? But is there anyway I can access a shared drive? What else to try?

So yesterday I upgraded from a slow, ancient T1 to Verizon's "Home Fusion" 4G LTE broadband. It's amazing how fast it is, but I seem to have a problem where occasionally I can't connect to certain sites.
For example, I'll be surfing Facebook and all of a sudden it'll just stop connecting and I can't do anything. BUT if I jump over to my laptop (running Windows 7) or my iPad, both of which are on the same network, it works fine.
If I then reboot the Windows 8.1 PC, all of a sudden I can access Facebook again, for awhile, until it craps out again at some point and I need to reboot again. It's not just FB either. This happens with a handful of other random sites as well, but when it does I can still access 99.9% of other sites just fine.
One thing I've noticed is that whenever I can't load a site, it seems like it's almost always waiting for some type of CDN-based content to load. Often if I hit the stop button in the browser the page then shows up immediately.
Like when I first tried loading this site, it just sat there forever and in the lower left corner of the browser it said "Waiting for yui.yahooapis.com" then after awhile I just hit X and then eightforums displayed just fine...
Browser doesn't matter. I've tried them all. I've tried flushing DNS, resetting winsock, etc. and nothing works except rebooting. Another odd thing I noticed while messing around is that I don't seem to have a HOSTS file in the normal location. I can't find it anywhere??
At first I thought this new verizon router just has flaky wifi so I switched to a direct connect via ethernet hoping that would solve the problem, but nope. It's definitely not that because like I said when it happens I can jump on my laptop connected to the same network via wifi and I can connect to FB just fine on that machine.
Both machines are running the same firewall/antivirus setup, and this Windows 8.1 machine is free from all malware, rootkits, etc.
Yesterday I tried testing different DNS servers (Google, OpenDNS etc) but that didn't work. But it did lead to something else weird - today if I try to do the same by opening up the TCP/IPv4 properties for my ethernet adaptor I get the following error message:
"In order to configure TCP/IP, you must install and enable a network adaptor card."
I just tried re-installing the latest drivers for the ethernet adaptor but that made no difference (it's an onboard Intel I217-LM). I've also tried different/new ethernet cables just for kicks.
I'm starting to wonder if the fact that my connections look like a mobile phone while my browser headers/useragent etc. identifies them as coming from a desktop machine is confusing some sites/CDNs, etc.?? Although that means all users of Verizon's Home Fusion service would have this problem and that doesn't seem to be the case.
I guess the weirdest thing of all is that if I can't connect to a site like say FB, if I just reboot then I can connect to FB again for awhile, until it decides to crap out again.
