Network / Sharing :: Wired Gigabit Network Speed Maxed At 10mbps?

I know a far bit about networks set my own up using servers and stuff in my basement and even tried a store bought router in case it was somehow my ddwrt router which it wasn't.
I have a new laptop ASUS ROG 17" G series its running 8.1
The source server has 6 147gb 15,000rpm sas drives in a raid dual gigabit network cables running esxi and ubuntu server with dual gigabit network cables, extremely fast speeds.
Everything is up to date on the laptop as far as I can tell I updated all drivers the gigabit network is using a Qualcomm Atheros driver from 7-16-2013 version 2.1.0.21 signed by MS its not a "genetic driver" or whatever sometimes shows up under device manager.
I have another normal desktop running 8.1 as well and it has no problems with network transfer speeds they exceed the drives capability to write to in the target drive from the server raid as does pretty much everything else I have, the server can serve files faster than anything can take them.
But the laptop seems to be capped at exactly 10MB/s according to teracopy (windows explorer transfer shows 11.8MB/s but I suspect its wrong its probably 10 thats what my router clams its going at not 11.8) and the graph is a steady line as if its capped like that.
I can transfer from an external usb 2.0 drive faster than this network? - I have tried wired and wifi the speed is the exact same.

Apr 13, 2014Since a few weeks, I have a problem with my laptop running Windows 8.1 (Toshiba Satellite P50-A-12PBE). Sometimes, after bringing Windows back from sleep mode, I seem to have no connection to the internet. Windows says the connection is 'limited', wether I'm connected with a wire or wireless. Resetting the router doesn't solve anything, but rebooting my pc does. Since both the wired and wireless network are always simultaneously affected, I think this hasn't anything to do with drivers (I already have the latest versions by the way). I have made screenshots with ipconfig-results when I'm connected with a wire.

Aug 21, 2013my network connection on my laptop. I recently moved up to my college and am now on their network. However, I didn't have this problem at first. But recently if I go to my network connections, there is always a wired connection listed named "Unidentified Network" which has "Limited" access. The problem here is that I am not connected to any wired networks. There is no cable plugged into my computer so I don't understand how this is possible. The only thing I have installed recently is Virtualbox, just in case that could affect it.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 - Will Not Connect To Wifi Only Wired Connection
Sep 15, 2014About two weeks ago I turned my laptop on and everything went blank, it couldn't read my drives, no data, nothing. After rebooting it a few times (with a lot of swearing and threatening to chuck it out of the window) eventually everything came back.
HOWEVER, since that night I have been unable to have a stable wireless connection. I have even reset my laptop to a factory setting. I then sent it away to get repaired and I'm still having the same issue. I've spent about two hours on the phone with my ISP but all of my other devices such as phone and iPad connect to the internet fine, although it does drop randomly every now and then.
I have a perfect connection when it is wired and works at a very good speed but if I try to connect to wifi it either says 'Unable to connect to this network' or 'limited' internet connection. My wifi also works to my ps3 and I'm able to stream videos without any annoying buffering.
The make is Lenovo and the model is Z580. It's about a year and a half old.
Is my wifi card (if there is one?!) broken? Can I just buy a USB port dongle that will connect to the internet? Or is there a magical cure?!

Oct 20, 2013I recently updated from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 using Microsoft update. After the update was completed, I've started to have problems connecting to the internet using a wired connection. NOTHING else has changed since the update. If I reboot, it works for less than 30 minutes and then the connection switches to "limited connectivity" with no way to revert it back to the usual status. If I reboot the computer, it works fine again for a little bit. Oddly enough, if I connect the computer to the exact same router using wireless, it does not seem to be dropping the connection.
I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with the factory Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
So far, I have: disabled, reenabled the device (PC seems to hang when I do this as well) reinstalled the drivers after removing them verified there is no proxy or weird DNS settings setup on the connection.

Oct 8, 2013I just installed a new wireless ac adapter and I do get a 1.3Gbps connection to my router. However when I test this connection by transferring some large files I get about 350Mbps for sending and 600 Mbps for receiving. When I transfer the same files with a 1Gbps wired connection I get about 970Mbps for sending (I think that includes some caching) and 760 Mbps for receiving.
Are there some options in Windows 8.1 Pro that can be set to get better wireless performance?

May 11, 2013I just got my new computer today and first thing I did after setting it all up was try and connect to the internet. I plugged in my ethernet cable I would only get "Limited Access" to the router I've spent the last 10hours+ trying to find a solution but not a single has worked now what to do.
I've tried manually putting IP/DNS but nope no luck. I've uninstalled drivers and reinstalled drivers, restarted router tried various cmd commands but I really just dont know what to do anymore.

Network / Sharing :: Can't Execute Setup / Installation Files From Network
Oct 18, 2013I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 x64. I have a Synology DS213+ NAS server in my LAN. Before doing the clean install (had Windows 8 installed before), all hardware being identical, I could launch setup programs from the NAS volume without any problem.
Now, after the clean install, I get an "Incorrect parameter" error when trying to run setup.exe files from the NAS. Some other exe files, like small programs that only consist of one exe file, can be run without any problem.
The following things have been ruled out so far:
- When first copying the installation files from the NAS to a local hard drive, they can be run without any problem, so it's not the installation files being corrupt. Also tried with many different installation packages.
- I can directly launch the same installation programs from other computers in the same LAN, without the need of first copying to their local hard drive.
- If I am in front of the computer causing trouble and run the same installation package from another computer in the LAN (having copied the files there in the first place) I can also execute the setup without that error.
- The NAS firmware or configuration has not been changed.
- The hardware of my main computer causing trouble in question has not changed.
- It does not make a difference whether the setup.exe on the NAS is accessed through the network drive letter of the location or whether I browse to the location via the network address, e.g. //MYNAS/Software/setup.exe
==> Hence it must the software (Win 8.1) and its configuration. And it has also to do with the interplay of the computer with that particular network share.

Aug 2, 2013Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.

Feb 27, 2013This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.
Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.
Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.
The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

Dec 15, 2013I re-installed Windows 8 yesterday evening (thought it would be quicker than to cleanup and fix my old install) and then directly upgraded it to Windows 8.1. The problem I am experiencing is quite weird: The Operating System doesn't detect the network cable.
With that being said, do not jump straight to the "Did you turn it on and off again" questions. Here is what I have done so far:
Hardware-Side: Cross-check the cable with another computer --> Working fineCross-check the wall plug with another computer --> Working fineTest the connection with the BIOS's connection diagnostic utility --> Link detected

I am wondering what is wrong with my installation. It was working A1 a few days ago, except for the issues I re-installed the operating system for.

May 6, 2014My 8.1 laptop shows multiple network connections to my Samsung Smart TV --- One as "media connections" and 3 as "other connections". Both devices are on a simple wireless network using Linksys WRT54GS.
Under the "Network" page, most of the "Properties" of the TV connections are the same except for "Serial Number" and "Unique Identifier". Did I do something wrong when setting things up? Are these extra connections harmful? Should I delete some? How?

Jun 9, 2014I purchased a new Windows 8, Inspiron 15 7000 series - 7537 last December. I had been using a router at a hotel for the time, and it worked correctly. When I arrived home, I had a Belkin router, and i experienced network issues in that i could not connect to the wifi. I could connect with Ethernet cable. The problem was fixed through customer support eventually, but I now have a new Comcast router, and i'm experiencing what appears to be the same or a similar issue. I can access the internet fine by wire. With wifi, it says i have access to the internet over the internet icon in the bottom right, but i cannot access webpages. I can use skype, and communicate through it.

Mar 19, 2014With the following problem regarding media streaming in windows 8. Up until recently I could stream video films from my HP laptop & HP desktop onto the TV via DNLA.
After following several posts on various sites it seems that when I try to start the windows media player network in the services I get the error message "windows could not start the windows media player network sharing service on the local computer.
Error 1068. The dependency group failed to start."
In the dependencies tab in the lower box of the two "the following system components depend on this service"
The box is greyed out and the words no dependencies is displayed.
Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Breaks Network With Two WiFi Access Points
May 10, 2014I have two wifi APs in the home and only one has an Internet connection. the other is to access the wired LAN.
Last week I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and thought everything was going well until I started getting wired LAN dropouts.
I have traced it back to 8.1 handling connection to wifi APs. In Windows 8, I was able to have "Connect automatically" for BOTH wifi adapters on this laptop. Now when I try to connect to the non-Internet AP, Windows 8.1 announces (correctly) "Limited access" and that's what Windows 8 did too. BUT, Windows 8.1 waits a few seconds then drops the connection with a useless message, "how me solve connection problems," where there is NO problem. A limited connection for the AP to the wired LAN is OK as it was in 8.
So now I am stuck with no home LAN access unless I drop the Internet AP and connect to the LAN AP.
Also, in the great wisdom of 8.1, because it is only a "limited" connection, it does not remember the Passphrase so I have to type it in every time. So much for progress.
What to do to get past this behavior and have a "limited" connection as OK as it is with Windows 8?

Nov 23, 2013I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and I can no longer see the files inside the folders on my networked drive. Before I upgraded I could see them, after the upgrade - not so much. The folders are fine, I can see them, just no files visible. There's no network issues as the files are visible from my Win7 machines and my wife's Windows 8 machine. All the standard default sharing and viewing settings are correct. Even if I put the direct path in File Explorer is tells me there's nothing there. I'm absolutely baffled. I have never seen this particular type of sharing issue before. I'm a pretty savvy Network Admin so the basic troubleshooting (and standard sharing settings) has been covered.

May 18, 2014I have Windows 8.1 Pro installed signed in with my Microsoft a/c. I have some folders shared on the network through Wifi. I also have an Android device with a File Manager that has SMB capabilities.
Now I want the to connect to my shared folders through the app which works perfectly fine. But what my requirement is that if anybody else want to connect to those shared folders (with the same or another app), I have to give out my Microsoft Account password for that.
Is there a way that I can avoid this password giving? What I'm looking is for creating another set of credentials to access the shared folders without giving away my Microsoft account details. I assume I can create a local account and do the same. Is there any other way I can do this?

Jun 19, 2014Unable to figure out a default setting.
Simply for the home desktop and want to share with other kit on the home network.
When I boot up it appears I have to always tweak the settings :
1) Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" so I opt for I tick "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network."
2 )The reboot.
All works fine and all devices can be seen and read/write in accordance with the appropriate share settings.
Now the issue is when I next reboot the
Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" will default to "This computer is part of a business network; I use it to connect to other computers at work".
So I have to got through steps 1 and 2 again.
How to I get Windows 8.1 Pro x64 to default to the "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network." on each boot without having to manual configure.
Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 Network Connection Properties Not Saving
Oct 3, 2013I have up until a few days ago been able to modify and save my network properties ok. I connected a new DisplayLink USB docking station that lead to an update of some sort. I believed this to be to do with associated drivers. I let this go ahead and it may well have nothing to do with the problems I have been having.
First of all I couldn't even see the IP parameters and kept getting an error as follows:
"In Order to Configure TCP/IP, You Must Install and Enable a Network Adapter Card"
The wired and wireless was working in environments where I could use DHCP so I was confident the hardware was ok. Uninstalling the drivers and then updating them has got me passed this problem so I can see and edit the IP parameters. However now they are never saved. I edit them, close the window, re-edit them and they are back to automatic settings! I need to use static settings in the office.
So far as I can see there are 2 possibilities:
1. I don't have permissions to save these settings, wherever they are stored. But I have administrator permissions. Where are the settings stored? I have saved them before. How can I get access to be able to save them again?
2. Something else is overwriting the settings. How do I find out what and stop it?

Feb 22, 2013In XP you used to be able to pull up a CMD Prompt and ask: net config server and this would tell how many machines/devices (other computers, printers NATs, NASs etc.) that you could hook to a machine.
they removed this function (as far as I can tell) in win7 but you can find references to the maximum number of devices that you can hook up (10 for Home , 20 for Pro) . How many devices that is for Windows 8?
