Network / Sharing :: How Many Network Devices Can Hook Up To Windows 8 Machine

Feb 22, 2013

In XP you used to be able to pull up a CMD Prompt and ask: net config server and this would tell how many machines/devices (other computers, printers NATs, NASs etc.) that you could hook to a machine.

they removed this function (as far as I can tell) in win7 but you can find references to the maximum number of devices that you can hook up (10 for Home , 20 for Pro) . How many devices that is for Windows 8?

Network / Sharing :: Can't Map Network Drives On Server 2003 Machine In Win 8.1

For some reason, in the 'Map Network Drive' window, the server doesn't show under 'Network' when I click the 'browse' button. Additionally the server doesn't show under 'Network' in file manager but I can ping it just fine.

Is there perhaps some kind of incompatibility between Win 8.1 and Server 2003 that could be causing this ...

Network / Sharing :: How To Hide Some Devices From Home Network

Feb 22, 2014

Is there a way to hide devices connected to LAN port 4 on a modem-router from devices connected to the other 3 ports? And also in the other direction: hide all devices on ports 1 2 3 from anything attached to port 4 ?

Instead of specifying by LAN port, the white list of things to see each other could be selected by MAC address, as I only have three things I want to see and be seen on my home network. A black list system is no good because unknown new things might get connected to LAN port 4.

I have an unusual networking situation... I disabled wireless in my modem-router, so only the 4 ethernet ports work.

I have a desktop (Win 7) a laptop (Win 8.1) and a NAS connected to the router's ports 1 and 2 and 3. They are networked by a password protected homegroup.

I share my internet service with a friend in the next apartment, by one ethernet cable attached to port 4 on my modem-router. Now her friends are staying there while she is away for a few months. They are not easy to negotiate with and I can't ask them to make any changes to their computers.

It seems they have added some kind of switch or hub at their end of that one cable, because I often see two or more strange PCs listed in Windows Explorer networks folder. It even lists the 3 usernames on their PCs.

I shouldn't simply disconnect their ethernet cable, or they won't have internet access, but I don't like how their PCs show up in Windows Explorer. Also I guess my three devices are shown on their computers (but probably none of my folders are actually readable by them)

It seems "network discovery" is not selective about what devices it finds. It is simply on or off, and it must stay on for my homegroup network to work.

Should I try a different kind of networking in Windows, instead of a homegroup?

Network / Sharing :: Different IP Address On Devices On Same Network

Apr 26, 2014

I own a Wifi connectivity from an ISP whose login method is to 1st connect to the wifi network and then login to its own website, after which only it allows to surf the net..

A couple days ago, there was a big storm outside my plcae and the connectivity was down for 1 day.. When the connectivity was restored, i found that the IP address generally used by my laptop was changed somehow..

To test it, i used another laptop in my house and tried to connect to the internet while already logged on from my own laptop to the ISP's website...

Since the spare laptop was connected to an IP address different than the one my laptop was using, It again threw me back to the ISP's homepage where i have to login again to surf the web...

However, when i try to login there, it gives out the error that the user id is same but the ip is different and hence i am not allowed to login in... All this while i can use net on my own laptop...

Similar is the case when i try to connect it to my iPhone... Same thing as here also, the ip address is different than the one used in my own laptop...

I tried to renew the lease by using command prompt and it gave me a message "No operation can be performed on Local area network/bluetooth device/ethernet while it has media connected!

My wifi router is of Linksys! Also, I reseted my router using the reset button.. Didnt work.. And when i say that the ip addresses are different on 2 laptops, i mean that the 1st two are same, but the 3rd and 4th are different1. And I am unable to login to my router's website of 192.168.1.1 ....

Network / Sharing :: W8 Cannot See Some Devices On The Network?

Jan 31, 2013

I just started playing with my new Windows 8 machine but I am having problems accessing <some> devices on the network: The Windows 8 machine can see: itself, Router, Win7 desktop, wireless printer, wireless camera It canNOT see: XP desktop, XP laptop, Print server, NAS All of devices on the network (including the Windows 8 machine) are visible from both XP machines and from my Windows 7 machine .

Things I tried / verified: All machines are in the same workgroup (no Homegroup) All machines have the same date / time I can ping Windows 7 machine, both XP machines, NAS, Print Server from Windows 8 machine Using "Wireless network watcher" from Nirsoft, I can see ALL devices from the Windows 8 machine EDIT: I just found out, the problem only occurs when connecting over Wifi (either 2.4 or 5GHz). When I connect with an Ethernet cable, all devices are visible.

Network sharing on Windows 8 machine is turned ON
Network discovery on Windows 8 machine is ON
Password-protected sharing on Windows 8 machine is turned OFF
File and printer sharing on Windows 8 machine is turned ON

Firewall on XP desktop machine is turned off (temporarily - for testing purposes only)

what else I could try to beat Windows 8 into submission?

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 (Find Devices And Content) Option Missing

Feb 26, 2014

I am trying to use PS Media Server with Windows 8.1, but honestly whatever app I am using is irrelevant. The problem is, when I try to connect my PS3 to PS3 Media Server, it seems to require me to go into the right side menu, click settings, then change PC settings, then click network and then under connections, click my network connection and turn on "Find Devices and Content".

However, as you can see from my screen shot, that option is missing.

I am on my PERSONAL laptop, connected to a private network (it doesn't matter if I use my wireless or wired connection direct to the router it doesn't show up either way). I have tried enabling and leaving a homegroup, neither of which works.

When I launch remote desktop connection from the Windows 8 machine, and enter the name of the Windows 7 machine, along with my User name and password (same on all three computers), the Windows 7 screen (from the upstairs machine) appears along with "The user name or password is incorrect".

Network / Sharing :: How To Share File With Win7 Machine

Aug 18, 2013

I had to buy a new laptop that I could take with me to work, and of course it runs Windows 8 (which I absolutely hate, incidentally). I decided it would be nice if I could share files with my primary computer when I'm at home, which is a desktop running dual-boot Win7 and Ubuntu.

I initially set up a homegroup, but whenever I try to access laptop files from my desktop it always pops up with a "enter network username and password" dialog. I tried looking up solutions to that but so far haven't found anything that works. I made sure the clocks on both computers were the same, and I made sure that all network settings were the same on both, including the setting "do not use user accounts/passwords," but I'm still having the issue.

So, what's the best way for me to share/sync files on my laptop with the desktop's files while I'm at home?

Network / Sharing :: Random Network Disconnect To Wireless Network Printer?

Feb 27, 2013

This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.

Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.

Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.

The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 - Operating System Doesn't Detect Network Cable

Dec 15, 2013

I re-installed Windows 8 yesterday evening (thought it would be quicker than to cleanup and fix my old install) and then directly upgraded it to Windows 8.1. The problem I am experiencing is quite weird: The Operating System doesn't detect the network cable.

With that being said, do not jump straight to the "Did you turn it on and off again" questions. Here is what I have done so far:

Hardware-Side: Cross-check the cable with another computer --> Working fineCross-check the wall plug with another computer --> Working fineTest the connection with the BIOS's connection diagnostic utility --> Link detected

Software-Side: Checking if Windows was up to date --> Nothing to updateUpdating the motherboard's BIOS --> Not betterUpdating the LAN's drivers with the ones I found on the manufacturer's website --> Not better

I am wondering what is wrong with my installation. It was working A1 a few days ago, except for the issues I re-installed the operating system for.

Network / Sharing :: Limited WiFi Network Connectivity On Windows 8 Laptop

Jun 9, 2014

I purchased a new Windows 8, Inspiron 15 7000 series - 7537 last December. I had been using a router at a hotel for the time, and it worked correctly. When I arrived home, I had a Belkin router, and i experienced network issues in that i could not connect to the wifi. I could connect with Ethernet cable. The problem was fixed through customer support eventually, but I now have a new Comcast router, and i'm experiencing what appears to be the same or a similar issue. I can access the internet fine by wire. With wifi, it says i have access to the internet over the internet icon in the bottom right, but i cannot access webpages. I can use skype, and communicate through it.

Here is the result from the ipconfig /all :

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]
(c) 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:Windowssystem32>ipconfig /all
Windows IP Configuration

[Code] .....

I really need the wifi on this router working for this laptop. Let me note that it works on other laptops, so it should be an issue with hardware or settings on this laptop.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Breaks Network With Two WiFi Access Points

May 10, 2014

I have two wifi APs in the home and only one has an Internet connection. the other is to access the wired LAN.

Last week I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and thought everything was going well until I started getting wired LAN dropouts.

I have traced it back to 8.1 handling connection to wifi APs. In Windows 8, I was able to have "Connect automatically" for BOTH wifi adapters on this laptop. Now when I try to connect to the non-Internet AP, Windows 8.1 announces (correctly) "Limited access" and that's what Windows 8 did too. BUT, Windows 8.1 waits a few seconds then drops the connection with a useless message, "how me solve connection problems," where there is NO problem. A limited connection for the AP to the wired LAN is OK as it was in 8.

So now I am stuck with no home LAN access unless I drop the Internet AP and connect to the LAN AP.

Also, in the great wisdom of 8.1, because it is only a "limited" connection, it does not remember the Passphrase so I have to type it in every time. So much for progress.

What to do to get past this behavior and have a "limited" connection as OK as it is with Windows 8?
