Maintenance :: Monitor Won't Go To Sleep All Of A Sudden?
Jun 14, 2013
My monitor won't go to sleep all of a sudden. It's set to 1 hour in the power plan. What complicates the matter is that I have now 2 users on the same pc. With the original one, the monitor always goes to sleep. With the other user it does not. Same settings, same screensaver (photo gallery).

Is there a way to turn off the monitor when my Windows 8 PC goes into sleep/standby mode? Right now the monitor stays on with a "HDMI input" message bouncing around the screen.

I have Windows 8 x64 Professional.
I customized my power plan (High Performance) so that the monitor sleeps after 5 minutes of inactivity. However, the monitor doesn't actually sleep. The LCD's colors turn to black, instead of the panel/back-light turning off. The mouse cursor also stays idle in the center of the screen.
In the advanced power options, I've made sure sleep happens after 5 minutes, and "Adaptive Brightness" is off.

I have tried a few multiple monitor software packages (settled on UltraMon) and have done some Googling. I am trying to find a keyboard shortcut/hotkey that will move my browser's CURRENT TAB ONLY between monitors. I know I can drag it, but a shortcut key would be so much better.

I am running Windows 8 on an AMD FX-8150 w/Liquid Cool with an XFX Radeon 7850 video card. My monitor is an LG Flatron w2753v.
After leaving my computer on for a certain period of time, the monitor goes into DVI power saving mode. On my old computer running Windows 7, when that would happen, I would either hit the keyboard or move the mouse and the monitor would wake up.
However now on Windows 8, when the monitor gets into this sleep mode, hitting keys or moving the mouse will not wake the monitor up, I have to physically reboot the computer in order for the monitor to start working again.
I went into power settings and set the computer to NEVER sleep.

I recently had a power failure while playing DotA 2 and now my fan/harddrive is making a weird noise.
Resource Monitor points that my C: drive (My only one) is running at 100%. Mostly it is being used by MsMpEng, which should be Windows Defender. It shows it scanning stuff (C:Users-----DocumentsGames DownloadsStarMade.exe). When I open Windows Defender it however doesn't show it scanning anything.

I don't know either this is the right place to ask or not. I just having my 2nd monitor. I just want to ask it is possible for me to play game and browsing the internet at the same time? The 2 monitors hooked up to the same graphic card. both of them is 23". So it is possible to play a full screen game on one monitor while also browsing the internet on the other monitor? I've tried it but whenever I click anything in the second monitor the game minimizes. My settings are set to extended display and I'm guessing that's the reason this happens but are there any settings I can change to make this possible. Basically having the 2 monitors be independent of each other. and this is my computer main spec:-
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-GD65
Graphic card: MSI Twin Frozr 2GD5 R7870
OS: Windows 8 64bit.

how to alter the time period before a computer running Windows 8 switches into "Sleep" or "Hibernate" mode. I find the default time period to be too short in practice - it is very frustrating to answer a brief phone call and then return to the computer only to find it has dropped into one or other of these states!

Running Win 8 Pro, 64bit. I recently installed an upgrade of my BIOS. At first it took several tries to boot into Windows. That is now solved. What remains is the fact that when I wakeup the system from sleep, it only displays the pre-login screen (greenish, with the tower). It freezes right there. Thinking this might be a display driver issue, I updated it (Radeon HD 6480G). That didn't fix the problem. On some forum I read about a SAM file. My question is: How does it find it when I reboot, but not when the system goes from sleep to wake up? At any rate, how could that be fixed? Also, I don't know how to revert back to a former version of my BIOS. My laptop has an Insyde board, and it went to version F.48, what ever that means.

I do a lot of computer animation, and I am often wanting to set off a render overnight, where the computer thinks hard about turning wireframe triangles into pretty pictures.
Problem is I was waking up to find that my render had not proceed very far at all, and gone to sleep. If I go to power settings and tell it to 'Never Sleep' then my render makes it all the way through.
But I don't want to be a sweatshop labor boss and never let my sweet worker bee get any sleep. I want it to work till it finishes the render, and then go to sleep. That's how it used to work on my old Win XP box.
Is there a way I can set sleep to say, only kick in if cpu usage is below a certain percent?

When I first installed Windows 8 my system used to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and then resume on pressing any key. Recently, without any apparent changes to settings, it will not resume and the power button has to be actioned requiring a loggin. what setting controls all of this. I also am confused by difference between sleep and hibernate!

I tried to play songs in windows media player but it showed some error. Then i switched to VLC just to find out that there is some problem with the sound. When I clicked on the volume icon to see if the volume levels are ok, I found the computer icon, which appears there to be like as if there is a bug sitting on the computer. I don't know much about it.

I recently upgraded my laptop, an HP g6-1b60us from Win 7 to Win 8Pro. All works fine, except when the Laptop wakes up from sleep. It has to reboot. Knowing that the HP POwer Manager was not compatible, I had uninstalled it. That still didn't resolve the problem. I finally ran a power efficiency diagnostics report. It's 6pages long, but in the end, different usb items prevent the laptop from entering sleep/suspend state. I only recognize one of them.

Can't figure out why my HP laptop restarts when woken up from sleep. Under Windows 7, it worked fine. But not with Windows 8. I have played with all the settings in power configuration. Have changed from having a screensaver to none. Makes no difference. All my drivers are up to date. I do not have HP power management installed. Windows takes care of my power management. And still, it won't resume correctly.

I will be using a browser, or just typing an essay, nothing computer intensive and all of a sudden the computer will black screen and power down, and you can hear the power quickly drain from the computer as everything suddenly stops. I will turn it back and it will seem as if nothing has happened. Attached is the files I got from the SevenForums diagnostic tool.
Notes:
-According to Asus Live Update, Windows Update, and Intel Graphics Driver Update, I'm up to date.
-According to Avast Software Updater, I'm up to date on software (though I know that that only manages some software).
-Specs (just in case): Amazon.com: ASUS A55A-AH51-RD 15.6-Inch LED Laptop ( Red ): Computers & Accessories
-I do run computer intensive things on this dinky laptop (battlefield 3, saints row the third, arkham city, a minecraft server + mysql server at times, etc) and it does not crash (besides low on memory warnings).
-Running Windows 8.1
-Safeboot off (I was going to install linux mint, but decided to wait until the warranty runs out. Didn't feel like going back to turn safeboot back on, so I have to deal with the stupid watermark).

Heres a little about my setup:
Lenovo Z580
Windows 8 Pro
1 single HDD split into 2 partitions, 1 for windows / program files, the other (data) for my data / downloads etc.
1 User account (administrator)
This began happening about a week ago, i first noticed it when i tried to download a file via Google Chrome, when i tried to save the file to my HDD (a 2nd partition on my disk) chrome told me I don't have permissions to save to this folder and that i should try to save it to user/downloads/ instead.
Since then I've found I am no longer able to write to that partition without either being prompted for elevated privs or being denied totally.
For example:
Download a file from the internet with chrome/firefox/IE
Extracting rar/zips files via right-click (i have to open them in winrar, and extract manually)
Create a folder in explorer: "Destination folder access denied", "You need confirm this operation"
I have UAC Settings are set to "Never Notify"
I've tried taking Ownership of every file/folder on my data drive
I've uninstalled all software (there where 3 applications installed since this started happening)
I've removed all windows updates since this started happening
Now I've ran out of things to try...
