I run a program that requires the setting "Smooth Edges of Screen Fonts" to be un-checked in Win7 and XP. Using Win7, that selection is under Control Panel/System Security/System/Advanced System Settings/Performance Settings/Visual Effects. How do I access that setting in Windows 8?
View 3 RepliesI've had some major problems with Windows 8 recently, I'll start with the questions:
1. Does the Windows 8 installation disk do a quick format or a full format that deals with bad sectors before installing?
2. If Windows 8 tries to install files on a bad sector will it cause the installation to hang?
3. Related question: If Windows 8 tries to do updates on a bad sector, can it cause a system crash and BSODs?
4. Second related question: Are there any known issues with certain windows update files crashing systems (for Windows 8)? If so, which ones are crashing the systems?
I had a major crash with Windows 8.1 where after many fruitless attempts to salvage the system, I ended up reinstalling.
I did this about 3 or 4 times, and each time, things ended up with a crash, sometimes after 2 days, sometimes after 3.
I finally definitively figured out that Windows Update was causing the crash. Unfortunately, I still don't know which one did it. What I do know is that some updates went fine, others caused crashes.
After the last crash, Windows went into a repair loop that I couldn't get out of. It would try an automatic repair, fail, and reboot.
What's worse is that my computer would not recognize the rescue disk or the Windows install disk, and ultimately (30 or 40 minutes later), send things into yet another fruitless reboot.
I finally used Knoppix to zero out the drive, which allowed the Windows install disk to run, but when I tried to install, I had more adventures.
1. Windows tried to install, but it gave me an error and didn't install.
2. Windows then was unable to format the disk, either through the install disk or through DOS.
3. The partition was turned into a "Raw partition" and I wasn't even able to do a chkdsk.
I then used badblocks, and that allowed me to format the drive through the installation disk, but once again, the installation failed. Or let me put it this way, 8 hours after it started, it still was trying to install.
Then this morning, I formatted with the Windows install disk again, and miraculously everything installed in 30 minutes like it was supposed to.
When I get home tonight, I'm going to try to do a chkdsk to check for errors. I've also turned off Windows update since that has been causing all these problems.
My Windows partition has a corrupted file system. I've tried fixing it, so far nothing works. At this point I'd just like to format it so that I can shrink it and use some of it's space on another partition. I have to format it before I can shrink it because it is corrupted. Would formatting it like this affect the Windows product key? I don't want to mess that up, in case I buy recovery media in order to re-install Windows.
I don't think it's important, but I am using a Toshiba Satellite S855 trying to fix Windows 8.
i was recently trying to install Microsoft visual studio on my windows 8.1 laptop (dell latitude d620) and for the life of me, i couldn't get it to work. first, i tried to install visual studio c++ express 2010, and it crashed every time i tried to open it (after installing). then, i tried 2012, because i thought it was a prob with OS compatibility. this time, i couldn't even install it before i got an error message saying there was a problem and it closed. after trying to get it to work for some time, i tried the 2013 version. this time, i got farther than i did with 2012, but not as far as 2010 (i didn't install). i would really like for this to work because i just bought a course on Udemy for $10, and i don't want to waste the money. however, if i cant get it to work, i suppose i could put it on my windows 7 desktop.

But program doesn't start, just show a message that the program doesn't work. I tried it in Windows XP compatibility mode but nothing.

However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.

One of the uninstalled apps, Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Pro, opened up space on my drive, but also left about 29 uninstalled programs (and I assume, many unnecessary folders). According to a couple of Google searches, uninstalling these programs, even if done in the correct order, could cause some problems down the line. However, I do want to install this program on my D drive. Would installing visual studio on my d drive cause any problems (as there are 29 programs related to visual studio on the C drive)? Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?
When you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.

Installed Launch 8 from Stardock and suddenly i have the old Start Menu on the bottom.
I guess MS is trying to change the new Start Menu. Even in the APPS menu you get the Start Menu.
This does not happen on every pc overhere, but certainly on 2 of the 4.

My pc shut off today all of a sudden, it was running normally, and next time power on windows would not start up normally. the power turn on as normal, windows 8 blue logo show up with circle running for 3 seconds, then screen would show a sign losing signal from monitor, then screen would turn dark, nothing going on, power still on, no beep, no sound or anything.
I am running windows 8 retail with license bought from Microsoft on ssd, and windows 8.1 enterprise rtm on a separate drive. Normally there are 2 items on blue boot menu.
I managed to log into safe mode, everything is still there, icons and files, installed software. I checked boot record and there are still same as before.
Just had this new 8.1 and a bit confused on the start menu, On the windows 7 when I clicked on the start bottom left I had a range of programs there that I could select.
i:e my documents,my pictures,my music,my video control panel,devices and printers,default programs.
How do I get that option to show like that on this 8.1 ....
I'm having trouble with my HP laptop. I've had this happen before and I had to completely reset my laptop because of it.
Basically I went to log in this morning, it said my profile couldn't be found and signed me out. I then tried again to log in and the Start menu has been flickering continuously and I can't select anything, it has also 'lost' all of my stuff so it looks like a temporary profile.. I have tried googling for an answer and cannot find anything that works, when I try to 'refresh' my laptop via going to safe mode it comes up with the error code: 80070490. I've tried to do a 'clean boot' in safe mode but that won't work properly...

Just like the title says, when I'm in the control panel I clicked on the Turn Windows Features on and off. A pop up menu comes up but it's blank. It used to have a list of items with a check box next to them. I searched the internet and can't come up with anything. I waited a while for the menu to pop but no list came up after a half hour.

After I installed some unsigned Intel Usb 3.0 drivers, every time I shutdown and restart the machine from the old (Win 7) desktop, or the Metro UI, the machine now ALWAYS reboots/restarts with the Advanced startup menu.
When I logged in my windows 8 I was surprised when I found that most of the tiles that were in my start menu disappeared even the desktop tile and the store tile.
I found an article that suggests creating the apps shortcuts and pasting them in this folder
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
But when I opened this folder I was surprised again to find all my tiles shortcuts there. Nothing is missing at all even the desktop shortcut and store shortcut are there.
Why don't these apps show up in the start menu? I don't remember doing any thing the last time I used my laptop except uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Basic 6

I've been dabbling with Windows 8.1 a little bit, and noticed something missing from it--at least, it's missing on my computer. I'd like to know if I am the only person experiencing this.
The problem is quite simple: The right-click menu for the Explorer taskbar icon has disappeared, and it doesn't let me close my open Explorer windows.
I have desktop shortcut icons for the C drive, and two external drives. Also, I have a shortcut icon for my USB flash drive, which I usually keep plugged in for backup.
I can have several Explorer windows open by clicking these icons. They appear stacked in the taskbar. (See diagram below.) If I have only one Explorer window open, the menu will have a Close Window option. If two or more windows are open, it will say Close All Windows.
This menu, and these options, seem to have disappeared with Windows 8.1 Preview.
Did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Update 1 from a TechNet ISO. Trying to figure out how to activate the new Start menu. I click on Start and get the the Start screen, click on the Start button and get the same. Gone through a few settings when I right click the task bar, properties and I don't see anything obvious in there.
I know I'm on Update 1 since I can minimize Metro apps.
