Laptop Hang Up On Boot With UEFI Enabled

Jul 26, 2014

I was using my laptop with everything going smoothly. USB port with adapter and CF card inserted. Ear buds in audio port. I decided to close the laptop which automatically puts the system in hibernate (or whatever it does when fast startup is active). Everything looked good. Now when I come back to it, open the lid and begin to startup from hibernate state it gets hung in the bootup and will not proceed. I have tried holding the power button to shut down and then restart -- no joy -- comes back to the same hung screen. Have tried holding various escape keys with startup -- no joy -- back to that same hung screen. Is there some way to bypass the hyberfil file which is probably corrupted, and get back to a full cold boot and restart from scratch?

Partitioning UEFI Enabled System For Clean Install

Remaining for DATA?

I am unsure where did I read RECOVERY should be the last partition - how would this be accomplished?

Lenovo Laptop With Windows 8 - Lost UEFI Boot Manager After Installing XUbuntu

Jan 26, 2014

I have a Lenovo laptop that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. I decided I want to dual boot with XUbuntu.

I shrank my partition and left space for the linux distro. I installed xubuntu into the free space, and even set the bootloader installation to be in that partition as well.

Then after installation, I only get the GRUB bootloader. How to get Windows 8 back and I finally be able to boot into either OS.

However, I have lost the blue UEFI boot manager that Windows 8 should display.

So I get EasyBCD on Windows, try lots of options to regain an original boot manager. But instead of the typical blue UEFI screen, it created a black screen with my boot options (and the linux option doesn't boot from there).

So to summarise, my boot sequence is like this:
-Switch on laptop
-See GRUB, with default pointing to Windows. I am able to boot to linux from here.
-Click Windows and then see Windows Boot Manager (black) with Windows and Linux
-Click Windows and it boots. Click linux and get an error.

I have secure boot enabled, and I installed xubuntu in secure boot mode.

It went through multiple steps on the Dell logo splash screen starting with "Getting Ready". Then it went to "Setting Up". Another lengthy time period. Now its doing "Setting up a few more things" and has been hung at 28% for over an hour. Hard drive activity very low and sporadic.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 Caused Laptop To Hang With Black Screen At Startup

Apr 13, 2014

My little brother has an 8.1 laptop, and from what I understand, when it prompted him for updates he clicked to restart. Now when the laptop tries to restart he sees his manufacturer logo and the Windows 8 loading circle, but after this the monitor goes black and stays that way. At some point a bluescreen pops up, says something about fixing the PC, goes to 100% after 5 minutes, restarts the PC, and the PC goes back to the manufacturer logo to start the loop again.

Maintenance :: Hang On Restart / Shut Down Slow Boot Times?

Oct 31, 2012

I'm getting soo many problems regarding booting after upgrading to Windows 8 Pro yesterday on my Asus Zenbook UX32A.

Specs:

2nd Gen i3-2367M processor @ 1.4GHz (for Ultrabooks)

6GB DDR3 RAM

500GB HDD + 30GB SSD (for Fast Resume, etc.)

Issue # 1: Whenever I Restart or Shut Down, the system HANGS there and does not progress *most* of the time. To fix this I have to always resort to holding the power button.

Issue # 2: When I boot the PC up, it takes SO long for me to get to the Start menu, around 1:15-1:30 min, which is longer than it took me on W7. I know I have an HDD, but this is abnormally long to me. Once in a blue moon, I will boot up in a matter of 30-40 seconds (which I think is how long it should take), but mostly it takes really long.

Issue # 3: To test the above 2 issues, I went ahead and opened msconfig from Run, and disabled all Non-Microsoft services except AVG to check. When I shutdown and power on - everything is fine, shuts down nicely, powers on nicely - however, the second time I do this, the system will hang on shut down, or will hang on start up, sometimes I can hear the startup sound but nothing on the screen, all sorts of weird actions.

Issue # 4: This one is funny. On standby (lid down), the system will restart itself. Happened while I was sleeping, I could hear the boot sound.

EDIT: The problem is still there when I disable 'Fast Start-Up' in Power Options. The problem is due to the processor state, it keeps resetting to 100%.

Setup Installation :: Recover Legacy Boot And Remove Old Entries From UEFI Boot

Aug 21, 2013

First, some context: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE that came with Windows 8.

I've managed to get a working dual-boot system with Ubuntu 12.10. I can't remember exactly how I done that, but I remember that I had to disable secure boot. I think that the boot configuration those days was:

Secure boot: DisabledLoad legacy option rom: EnabledBoot list option: Legacy

This "configuration" worked perfectly for 6-7 months.

Then, one day (last week, can't remember the exact day), when I was using Windows 8 the computer crashed. I hard-rebooted and got this screen:

After executed boot-repair from a Ubuntu LiveCD dozens of times I've decided to eliminate Ubuntu temporarily and focus to get a system with Windows 8 working nice.

Then I used my recovery DVDs to recover the system. Yup, Windows has booted. But when I restarted first time I got the same error. Then I, digging a solution, pressed F12 after a reboot and got here:

The highlighted option allows me to boot into Windows 8. So I went to boot options (F2) and changed the following configuration:

Load legacy option rom: DisabledBoot list option: UEFI

Now I can boot directly to Windows without need to press F12.

But my objective isn't complete. I want to erase all Ubuntu entries from the seconds image and restore the legacy boot from the first imagem (because they worked before).

I did two things:

I erased all partitions related to Ubuntu (root partition and home partition).I created a Windows recovery disk (not a system recovery disk).

I used the recovery disk to run the automatic recovery procedure (I forgot the exactly name). I've runned it at least 10 times with no success. Then I went to command prompt to try the famous triad: bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /rebuildbcd. Still, no solution.

Setup Installation :: Windows Boot Manager - Deleted UEFI Boot Option?

Mar 24, 2014

After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.

I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.

I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.

Dell XPS Laptop / Windows 8 - UEFI And Partitioning

Apr 21, 2013

My wife got a new Dell XPS laptop from her employer. A very impressive bit of kit with Windows 8, 64 bit, masses of RAM and many, many processor cores (dreadful touchpad though ). And 1TB HDD.

She asked me to set up it the same way as her existing Windows 7 laptop, so a fun few hours discovering how the charms bar works (before giving up on that and going for Start8) and installing various bits. I then decided to partition the huge drive so the OS and program files are on one partition which can be imaged and restored with Acronis as required while all the jpgs mp3s docxs etc remain safe on the second partition (every computer in out home is set up this way and I've found it to be the best method).

I shrank the partition as much as possible and ended up with 400 GB before immovable files put a stop to that - needlessly large I thought so I installed EASEUS partition manager which I have used with W7 without problem (can you see my obvious mistake yet?) and set it for a 200 GB partition, started it going and popped back five minutes later expecting to find everything as desired. Instead the laptop no longer believed it had a HDD. The current situation is that the machine is pretty much as wanted except the partition sizes aren't as required and no Acronis image has been made.

So, the questions this experience raises are:

1. Did the drive fail or did EASEUS break it? (If it was just waiting to fail my opinion is that it's good to find out so early on and not when it was full of data that hadn't been backed up).

2. Which partition managers are safe to use with the combination of Windows 8 and UEFI that Dell have produced? I'm somewhat nervous of just experimenting on this point.

3. Is Acronis safe to use with Windows 8 and UEFI.

UEFI - How To Boot From Windows DVD

Sep 21, 2013

I have very little experience with Windows 8 until now. I am having an issue trying to run System Refresh or System Restore from the System Recovery Environment booted from the Windows disc. When I try to run it from the disc I already System Refresh says that the drive is locked. I tried System Restore and it said no OS's were found. I went into the CMD prompt and went to c: and can see the drive just fine.

Steps tried: running fixboot, fixmbr, rebuildbcd commands from CMDrunning dskchk /f (which forced a dismount)

I then read something about a non UEFI bootable disk couldn't access a GPT partition, which I think is the case here. So then I tried oscdimg to make my iso UEFI bootable (twice) and the UEFI Boot Manager still only shows 'Windows Boot Manager' at the boot menu. I even tried downloading an iso that was already UEFI incase I did it wrong and it still doesn't see it.

Setup Installation :: Can't Install Windows 8.1 On Non-UEFI Laptop

Jun 30, 2013

I have a Lenovo B575 laptop that is not UEFI capable; however, I have downloaded the x64 Win 8.1 ISO, burned it to a bootable DVD and a bootable USB drive and tried installing Windows 8.1 using a boot from DVD and also a boot from USB drive, and neither method has resulted in a successful installation. The root cause of the installation problem is that Windows 8.1 is intent on creating an EFI partition structure on my non-UEFI machine.

So, I end up with a 300MB Recovery Partition and a 100MB EFI Partition which doesn't work well on my machine. Now, during the installation process, I opted to delete all existing partitions and allow the installation to properly partition the hard drive for installation; however, I knew I was in trouble when the machine started hanging during reboots.

Maintenance :: UEFI Boot Removed After HP Updates?

Nov 29, 2013

This brand new HP Pavilion Laptop had a UEFI Boot entry in the BIOS.

I used the HP Support Assistant to update the HP functions and programs, and it downloaded a new UEFI diagnostic which it installed as a partition on the drive - It was already there to begin with, but the new version removed the entry "UEFI Boot" from the Bios Boot Selections and now it just says "OS Boot Manager"

Therefore, when I try to use "Advanced Start" options from PC Settings, I no longer get the options to go into Safe Mode or the other recovery options, the system just reboots and F8 does absolutely nothing.

Other than setting my BCD to Legacy Mode, I cant get this into Safe Mode.

I burned the recovery disks which were 6 DVDs, will that put the original OS back in? I do have the free 8.1 update available, maybe the new UEFI only works for 8,1? I'm just trying to figure out how to put the UEFI Boot option back in, the original UEFI tool cannot be downloaded from HP.

How To Change Boot Order UEFI ASUS P8 Z77 V

Jul 30, 2013

When I access my UEFI during startup, the Boot Priority section is either empty or shows unrelated drives attached. I can select the drive from which to boot by clicking on the Boot Menu, then clicking on the drive desired.

I purchased a new Intel SSD and installed it as the "C" and "D" drives and was happily booting from that SSD until I added new HDDs to my system. I now have four HDDs plus the SSD. One of those HDDs still contains the original Root C bootup and Windows 8 system on it. I frequently now find the system, reason unknown, may choose to boot from the HDD rather than the SSD.

I cannot find the method for directing the UEFI bootup menu/priority steps... my goal is to have the computer boot from the SSD, which if it were to fail, then would secondarily boot from the HDD original Root C.

The computer arbitrarily changes the SSD from drive designation "C:" to "J:" and the HDD to "C:"... how to specify the SSD as the "C:" unless it fails or is removed? the computer system info:

Cannot Set UEFI Boot Order To CD Windows 8.1 HP Pavilion

Jan 10, 2014

Windows 8.1: HP Pavilion 2475ea Desktop PC.

I have Secure Boot turned off. I have Legacy Boot turned on, but do not think that is needed.

This link gives me instructions to boot from CD but they seem not to make sense from No 2... [URL] .....

In that at 5-6-7 it seems to require me to select the CD then boot to Windows from HDD then restart and do the same again, but this time select CD again, or something??

I expected to set the device, then restart the computer and it would boot from the device, not restart Windows as described. I was able to boot from a WinPE 4b CD.

I then decided to try changing boot order in the UEFI BIOS. From then on the HP (F9) described menu showed 'Windows Boot Menu' only under UEFI Devices. I could only boot from CD after putting the order back to 'Windows Boot menu' at the top of the order list; after which, as long as the CD was in the drive the (F9) list showed the CD drive as selectable to boot from.

Windows 8 - Legacy And UEFI Boot Methods

Jul 14, 2013

Windows 8. I am confused with the Legacy and the UEFI boot methods. The reason I am confused I think, is because I read to darn much on the Internet. One bit of confusion is with respect to changing from UEFI to Legacy. It would appear from some comments that if I do that, Windows 8 won't boot anymore. I would have to change back to UEFI for indows 8 to boot.

I also read that changing back to UEFI could be a major problem when trying to access the BIOS. No, I am confused. My ultimate goal is to set my laptop up to dual boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu. Like I have been doing for the last multiple years with XP and Windows 7.

I can install using standard MBR, and disable Secure Boot and UEFI in the BIOS and I can restore that no problem.

However, I have been playing with Aomei, Macrium, EaseUs, etc to handle my image restores and not having any luck at all. Basically it's this thread that explains my issues almost perfectly.

Home user: Need Win 8 Disk Imaging solution with UEFI-compatible Startup Disks

I want to install Windows 8, using UEFI with Secure Boot, install patches, software, etc, then run sysprep, shut down, image and then deploy the image on the same make/model down the road.

The only real success thus far has been to load Windows 8, and then run imagex to capture a new wim and then install using that WIM. But that's a whole install, I'd rather just lay an image back down.

Setup Installation :: UEFI USB Disk - Does Not Boot From Windows 8

Mar 13, 2013

Laptop: ASUS UX31A-DB71, latest BIOS: 218

Originally my laptop came with Windows 7 and when i looked at disk management my disks were formatted with UEFI schema. One of my friend gave me a UEFI bootable USB drive loaded with Windows 8. So, i thought why not give it a try. So, I created a backup of my OEM Windows 7 and saved the iso files in a seperate external HD (created twice just to be sure . Now, i decided to load the Windows 8. Booted into the BIOS and there is an option to select the USB drive along with the UEFI option for that USB drive. I selected the UEFI option but some reason it does not boot into UEFI.

So I decided to select the standard USB install and this option let me install windows 8. In the process of installing i formatted the partitions and made a single partition and installed Windows 8 on it. I am guessing now the drive is not GPT but MBR. I also noticed that his installation USB disk had an option to select either 32bit or 64bit of Windows 8... Would Microsoft create a same iso file with both versions? I am guessing he created the USB from a illegitimate source.

I am planning on purchasing Windows 8 Pro version as an iso but wanted to be confident that it would work with UEFI architecture.

Questions:
1. Why would the system NOT boot from UEFI?
2. If I download the legitimate iso from Microsoft and wanted to install Window8 Pro via UEFI, I am sure i would have to format my SSD to GPT and how would i go about formatting it during installation?
3. How would i create a recoverable USB for my iso image i created for Windows 7 via ASUS AI Recovery. Do I need to follow the same procedure as stated in creating bootable USB disk (i.e. FAT32 system) via diskpart utility?
