I would like to nuke system for clean install. I understand there will be system reserved partitions, however, my main concern relates to OS and DATA partitions - Review attached screenshots :
150 GB for C (OS) drive?
30 GB for RECOVERY?
Remaining for DATA?
I am unsure where did I read RECOVERY should be the last partition - how would this be accomplished?
Why I had to enable UEFI in my bios to be able to install Windows 8.1 with update in my pc?
D510Mo using na hdd from acer notebook. Removed the partition using diskpart, cleaned it... no joy!
Windows setup says it couldn't install in that disk and I had to check the install logs (where the hell those logs are saved?)
There where no GPT partition on disc, no nothing...
I have made a clean install of Windows 8 using USB and UEFI. Somehow it seems the instalaltion is not quit right of what I have read... Have attached picture of the Diskmanagement (OS is Norwegian by the way).
Compared to this thread: UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 8 with for me something is missing/wrong.
I have a laptop with one SSD and two internal disks. Both internal disk were removed before the installation, and connected and formatted after finished the installation.
It can me mentioned that I downloaded the OS, saved it as .iso file, then copied onto the USB disk. Then connected into the laptop and booted from USB/UEFI.

I recently bought a new SSHD for my laptop and after initial problems with trying to install Windows in UEFI, I turned to Legacy and that worked. But now when I change it to UEFI, it just comes up as "Operating system not found".

I'm not quite getting what i'm supposed to configure on the MB for UEFI boot prior to installing the windows 8.1.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy wife got a new Dell XPS laptop from her employer. A very impressive bit of kit with Windows 8, 64 bit, masses of RAM and many, many processor cores (dreadful touchpad though ). And 1TB HDD.
She asked me to set up it the same way as her existing Windows 7 laptop, so a fun few hours discovering how the charms bar works (before giving up on that and going for Start8) and installing various bits. I then decided to partition the huge drive so the OS and program files are on one partition which can be imaged and restored with Acronis as required while all the jpgs mp3s docxs etc remain safe on the second partition (every computer in out home is set up this way and I've found it to be the best method).
I shrank the partition as much as possible and ended up with 400 GB before immovable files put a stop to that - needlessly large I thought so I installed EASEUS partition manager which I have used with W7 without problem (can you see my obvious mistake yet?) and set it for a 200 GB partition, started it going and popped back five minutes later expecting to find everything as desired. Instead the laptop no longer believed it had a HDD. The current situation is that the machine is pretty much as wanted except the partition sizes aren't as required and no Acronis image has been made.
So, the questions this experience raises are:
1. Did the drive fail or did EASEUS break it? (If it was just waiting to fail my opinion is that it's good to find out so early on and not when it was full of data that hadn't been backed up).
2. Which partition managers are safe to use with the combination of Windows 8 and UEFI that Dell have produced? I'm somewhat nervous of just experimenting on this point.
3. Is Acronis safe to use with Windows 8 and UEFI.
I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro on my Lenovo Lynx tablet.
I noticed today that the tablet gets very hot even when the screen is off. I looked at the Task Manager and saw that the CPU is constantly at 99% and a process called "System" is hovering around 70 to 75%. When I run Process Explorer, the two threads using the most CPU in that process are labeled "ntoskrnl.exe!EtwProviderEnabled+ox6e".
Here are the ones I've tried:
Disable the scheduled task called "ConfigNotification" located in Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > WindowsBackup. That task doesn't exist.Updated every driver that I could. No change.Waited. Over 12 hours and no change.Disabled Windows Defender. No change.Disabled Windows Search Indexer. No change.Disabled/Uninstalled all network drivers. No change.
The only things I've installed besides Windows and all its updates are Office 2013 and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. The last solution I've found is to reinstall Windows which I'd rather not do .
If I turn UEFi off and enable legacy, the system boots normally. I am now using mbr partition
UEFI doesn't detect either my DVD drive, HDD, USB.
My Hard Disk is ok and good.
I was using my laptop with everything going smoothly. USB port with adapter and CF card inserted. Ear buds in audio port. I decided to close the laptop which automatically puts the system in hibernate (or whatever it does when fast startup is active). Everything looked good. Now when I come back to it, open the lid and begin to startup from hibernate state it gets hung in the bootup and will not proceed. I have tried holding the power button to shut down and then restart -- no joy -- comes back to the same hung screen. Have tried holding various escape keys with startup -- no joy -- back to that same hung screen. Is there some way to bypass the hyberfil file which is probably corrupted, and get back to a full cold boot and restart from scratch?

I just got a new laptop, a Lenovo X230, for which I paid extra to have the OS on it as Windows 8 Pro.
So--now I have it, and Win 8 Pro 64 is installed and activated on it. I am a legal owner of Win 8 Pro.
However, I would like to do a clean install of Win 8 on the computer, to have it free of bloatware, etc. (In fact, I would like to set up a multi-boot with Win 7, and perhaps even triple boot with Xp as well. (I have installation media and my product keys for XP and 7 though, so those are not really a problem.)
The computer came with no discs at all. There is a procedure to make recovery disks. I may do that, but I think those will be to restore the computer to how it came from the factory, and therefore not usable for a clean install.
I don't see my product key for Win 8 anywhere. Not on the computer, not on any kind of card that came with it, etc.
I looked at the tutorial here for clean install of Windows 8, but it requires an install disc and product key. I have neither, although I am a legal owner of Windows 8.
Is there a way I can create (from my installed Windows 8) a win 8 install disk, that can be used for a clean install? Or a link to download one? Is there a way I can get my product key?
I have an alienware laptop running windows 10 tech preview on the main os drive and then a data hard drive, i have a fixed size VHD file stored on my D drive which is 60g so I boot to windows 8.1 setup and i mount the VHD, i go through setup like normal creating a new partition on the VHD and going foward like normal.... then it reboots like normal and trys to boot into windows 8.1 but i get an error saying that it cant find winload.efi with code 0x000000e i think it was......

Recently bought a Dell Inspiron 14R 5437 laptop with Windows 8 SL (ES). Everything worked fine. Decided to get a Windows 8.1 SL (EN) version and did a clean install. After installing windows and successfully activating I started to install drivers from official dell site via wired internet. First downloaded Wifi/WLAN driver but it doesn't seem to install (Message displayed during instal: The installer can not run on this platform. Please select package for your operating system.)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to clean up my 8.1 system and encountered a folder that it won't allow me to delete or move. It is in C:users[me]appdatalocal emp and is named rarsfx4. It appears to have been used by my AV pgm., Bitdefender, at install time. When I attempt to delete it, it asks me if I want to move it to the recycle bin. I click Yes. Then it says I need to provide administrator permission to delete it. I click Continue. Then a little window pops up and quickly disappears that says '234 items recycled.' Then another window appears that says 'You require permission from xxxme to make changes to this folder' and gives me only the option to try again, which just repeats this last process. xxx is my PC name, and xxxme is my user profile name, not any user account name that shows up in Control Panel, User Accounts. (I have only one user account, which is a network one, my gmail ID.) When I check Properties, Security, for the folder, I see that System, my network user account (which is an administrator), and Administrators (xxxAdministrators) all have full control. When I click on Advanced under Security above, the owner is displayed as Administrators (xxxAdministrators).
I also tried deleting the folder using Command Prompt, Run as administrator, but get 'access denied' for every file.
My questions are what is going on here, and what can I do to remedy it?
I have recently purchased Windows 8 Pro Upgrade and for Christmas I will be getting my first SSD.
I want to do a clean install of 8.1 via USB, is this possible with the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade key? I have read through numerous tutorials and think I've got it right but just want some to clarify this will work.

Use the generic key to run the installer
Setup the PC
Open PC Settings
Change Product Key enter Win 8 Pro (upgrade) key and activate
Do I then need to do the reg edit and command prompt changes? Regedit - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE Command prompt - slmgr /rearm Do I have this right or am I missing something?
I have an upgrade key to Windows 8 that I bought to upgrade from 7. Now that Windows 8.1 is out, I would like to upgrade to Windows 8.1, but I want to do a CLEAN, REFORMATTED install.
How can I do this when I only possess the upgrade key to Windows 8.1.
I am sure many other people are interested in doing this as well.

I read about how to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit with clean install. I have a 32bit win7 on my desktop and a 64 bit Windows 8.1 on my laptop.
My question is can I use the Windows 8.1 laptop do download the upgrade assistant and get Windows 8 64 bit? I don't want to screw up my laptop especially cause it has an OEM Windows 8 that how to reinstall in case of OS breakdown.

How windows 8 works now without the sticker key on new laptops. I've searched all over the internet and all I can find are dumb articles telling users to use the manufacturers recovery image. How to do a CLEAN install of Windows 8.
My new windows 8 has NO sticker key on the bottom so my understanding is that it's stored on the bios? Is this correct? So my question is, is if I get an ISO of windows 8 and install it, will it automatically recognize the key or is the key only set up to be recognized by the PC manufacturers crapware filled image?
ALSO, if thats the case, can I use a 3rd party product to pull my key and then use that with the clean ISO? Lastly, where can I download a clean ISO of windows 8? I was aware that 8.1 was available as a free download so I downloaded and installed it. All of these updates seem to have bogged down my system. When I click on what I am assuming is the new start button (the white house icon in the taskbar) it takes 6-10 seconds for the menu to appear .
I dug out the key with Belarc advisor and went to MS's site to download an ISO of 8.1 but it told me that it would not let me download the 8.1 ISO since my key was for 8.0. If I were able to get my hands on a 8.1 disc would I be able to use my 8.0 key to do a clean install of 8.1? It is so disappointing to have purchased such a powerful laptop and have it bogged down by so many updates as well as all of the bloatware that came preinstalled on it.
It says I cannot install windows 8.1 because ubuntu doesn't use ntfs partition but ext4. How can I do a clean install of windows 8.1?

so my windows install got borked so i formatted drive and did a clean win 8 install (not win 8.1). everything seems to be happy except the entire c: is "protected." can't even make a new folder without a pop up saying I need administrator approval (I am the only user and i am the admin).
