I know how to manage the behavior of icons and notifications in Windows 8, but how do I delete programs from the list of icons and notifications (that appear on the taskbar)?
My "Notification Area Icons" was not working right, so I opened it and checked the box "show all icons and notifications on the task bar" and it did.... Now my task-bar is crowded with all these icons and so I must put them back. The problem is, I have tried clicking all over the task bar but can't find the tool/option to do it.
I have a Windows 8.1 x64 and for some time (I guess after the Update 1) my apps have no icon in the taskbar as you can see from the picture the exe files missing icons too and notifications are not working as well removing and installing again didn't work and some of these apps i installed recently.
I have my installation of Windows 8.1 desktop taskbar set to never combine, use small icons and locked. With XP I could pin a program to the taskbar, click it once and the program would open. Click the program icon a second time and a new instance of the program would open. With Win 8.1 if you click the icon the second time the window simply minimizes. How can I restore the old XP behavior. I realize that I can right-click on the icon after one instance is open and open another instance of the program. However, that is an additional step that is a pain in the butt.
I should add that I use the latest version of Classic Shell and have look through the settings and don't see any that can change this behavior.
Part of my job is to prepare new laptops for end users that comes from OEMs. Since the included windows installation on most laptops is loaded with "bloatwares" we used to deploy a fresh Win7 Image in WDS and activate using OEM slic which made them completely legal. That was in the Windows 7 days.
Now I'm trying to do about the same thing with Windows 8 however since there is no SLIC it gets a little bit trickier.
Here is what we are doing right now:
-pull the hard drive from the laptop
-make a backup of 'Store' folder
-Reinstall hard drive, deploy Image or Clone from same model.
-pull the hard drive again
-overwrite content of Store folder with the old one
-Change folder permissions
-put the hard disk back in the laptop, let it boot.
-Windows complain about an activation error, reboot or CMD>slmgr -dli.
-activated again.
The hardest part in fact is to take note of which Store folder goes with which laptop.
In the previous versions of Windows you could see the list of wireless networks you had previously connected to, change the order in which these Preferred Networks connected when more than one of them were available, as well as add or remove the Preferred Networks from this list. You could do so via Control PanelNetwork and InternetManage Wireless Networks.
But in Windows 8, unfortunately this feature is unavailable
It can be done manually in the cmd by these commands
Show Wireless Networks
netsh wlan show profiles
Show stored key for a Wireless Network
netsh wlan show profiles name=[profile name] key=clear
Delete Stored Wireless network
netsh wlan delete profile name=[profile name]
Or Third party software can be used to do so such as
This new sync tab feature in IE11 is handy. But it's also a bit annoying. I have about 7 or 8 PCs I use frequently and I re-install the OS all the time. So I end up with orphan machines that appear in IE 11 sync tabs and I can't seem to find a way to remove them. I also noticed that these tabs mysteriously disappeared on some of my machines.
First of all i was unable to configure my advanced power options, i.e- create new power plan, choose what power button does or closing lid does? I restored the settings & restarted but couldn't solve it. This is what i get while trying to fix this:-
Somehow, then i thought of creating another admin account and config the settings there, to see if it works out. But, through Control Panel>User accounts i couldn't manage existing account and neither i am able to create new account.
Another thing i noticed is when i go to PC settings through windows 8 new feature - charm menu, i couldn't find the Users menu. Now, these things are not normal at all.
When I disable Flash through "Manage Add-ons" I find that I can still play some YouTube videos (I assume using html5) but when the video ends my screen goes blank for a second and then the computer goes to the login screen. When I log back in all the applications that were open are no longer open. Is there any way to disable Flash in IE10 and not have this behavior?
My system got a virus/browser hijacker called qone8.com. McAfee did not detect it at all, removing it was a pain. One artifact that remains i the manage add-ons window pops up every time ie starts. I cannot find anything to fix this behavior. I have looked in the registry and found nothing. I would also like to find out how to completely remove unwanted entries in the manage add-ons windows. there should be a way to do this. I keep hearing of procedures to do this and all the options mentioned are always greyed out or never work. Hey Microsoft STOP GREYING OUT NEEDED FUNCTIONS!!! Image uploaded show how ie starts every time.
underlying all this metro stuff, is there still a stock/vanilla interface available somehow? when working on a desktop/laptop. take the bitlocker dialogues for example.
i mean, i guess one can deal with it (like a boss!), it is definitely no dealbreaker.
If you want to see email notifications on the lockscreen before you log in it's pretty easy.
Carry out the instructions to auto log in on startup
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup
then have a batch file in the start-up folder to lock the pc
Rundll32.exe User32.dll,LockWorkStation
when the pc starts up it auto logs on with your live account, I get about 10 seconds of start screen before the batch file runs then it locks and I have email and whatever other notifications are active sat on the lock screen. You also have the benefit of any background apps starting up before you log in, speedfan, lcdsmartie things like that.
yesterday I noticed that by going to settings / notifications ("Show notifications from these apps") list is empty and no longer has to manage all app notifications on/off why?
Is there a way to allow desktop pop-ups to display in Metro that are desktop related. For example if I'm in Metro and my firewall (ESET) has a pop-up asking me to approve/deny a connection it displays to the desktop and so I can sometimes not realise it's there.
I cannot change the Windows update settings even though I am the administrator. It is grayed out in the snapshot above. I am the only user. I created a local account as well. I need to change the update settings to download updates automatically but I am stuck on "check for updates but let me choose..".
I need to change the setting in order to get internet access at my work using my home computer. The IT person at work recommended that I install Windows 8.1 to see if it would correct the problem, but the new installation did not work. This second screenshot shows that I am an administrator,I think.

The Manage Addon window in IE10 is not displaying correctly and there seems to be no way to resize the two panes that are not showing correctly. Do you think this would be a registry problem or do you think a reinstall of IE10 would override whatever setting is causing the window to display improperly. Would an uninstall and reinstall of IE10 be necessary or the best course?
except it works in 32 bit but not in 64 bit windows 8.1 update fresh install. Have checked the apps notification switches in PC settings and they are all on. The one I miss is the email notification telling me I have mail which appears to be enabled but test messages from gmail dont trigger notifcations in right hand top side of desktop.
One notification that does work is when I insert a USB it asks what to do with removable devices but thats the only notification I get.
I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 and my apps notifications are not working any more I did everything went into pc settings, I checked each individual app and everything is on.
How to get rid of them notifications and that annoying "bell" icon on my taskbar, that comes with them? Am usingVersion 35.0.1916.153 (up to date that is) and have already tried disabling via group policy and flags within Chrome,it keeps coming back.
I am wondering if there is any good software out there for audio graphic equalization. Or just equalizer you know for changing how audio sounds. I had a pair of headphones with software that made some things sound INCREDIBLE but I am getting rid of them for issues.
I am wondering if there is any decent software to manage equalization of audio other than the built in ones for Windows Media Player?
I have very annoying problem with Windows 8. The problem is in metro control panel "PC Settings". I don't know what is the reason for removing all apps control in the Notifications menu.
I had this problem so many times and the only fix for this that I know - is to create a new microsoft account or to do clean install (which I don't like to try).
I'm having an issue concerning the default Mail app from Win 8.1. I have set up two mail accounts: my default Microsoft account and an extra Office 365 account. Notifications are turned on for all mail and mails are downloaded as they arrive. But I'm not getting notifications for the default account. Might I add that synchronization is not automatic and I need to open the app to get the new mail. The second account works okay, though.
I cant get the lock screen notifications to work for mail and calendar, when I go to add them they are just greyed out and don't appear.
The only lock screen notification I have got to work is the weather but I don't know what I did to make that happen. How can I get the mail one to work.
I was just wondering whether Windows would control how Thunderbird sent desktop notifications?
If I email a message to the account set up with thunderbird it appears instantly(ish) in the program but if I'm in another program and send a message I don't get any pop up notification from thunderbird....
How to get google chrome application to start on startup in the background only so that i can get gmail notifications without having google chrome running
