Is there a way to allow desktop pop-ups to display in Metro that are desktop related. For example if I'm in Metro and my firewall (ESET) has a pop-up asking me to approve/deny a connection it displays to the desktop and so I can sometimes not realise it's there.
underlying all this metro stuff, is there still a stock/vanilla interface available somehow? when working on a desktop/laptop. take the bitlocker dialogues for example.
i mean, i guess one can deal with it (like a boss!), it is definitely no dealbreaker.
My issue is that I'm working on a machine that is continuously switching between Desktop and Metro several times a second. It does it in clean boot mode (only Microsoft services enabled, everything else disabled), but not in Safe Mode. I'm running SFC /scannow at the moment, and I already ran linux badblocks /sv and CHKDSK (no errors). SMART status is okay, no triggers have been popped and the quick test passed.
I was wondering if it was possible to run the Metro/ Modern UI apps on the dektop screen in a window? It seems the new office does this and I really liked it. I find it extremely annoying using a fullscreen app on a 24" screen on my desktop PC.
The new Windows literally kills windows. I don't get why they would do this to desktop users.
Windows 8 Desktop. Somehow I have changed something and now my desktop windows will not re-size or move. When I initially open a program or browser it opens fine in a small window somewhere on the screen. As soon as i grab the title bar 2 outlined windows appear on screen in Yellow and Red. When I let go of the title bar the program snaps to one of the two positions, when I try to move the window it just keeps snapping back.
So the desktop programs now seem to be behaving as if they were Metro apps and displaying using Metro Snap. It is really bothersome. How I can revert back to normal Desktop operation?
What I want to do is have the ability to play a fullscreen game or a fullscreen video or anything else like that, but have it only take up the screen that the desktop is taking, leaving the rest for a snapped skype or something like that. I found a good thread describing the problem, but no answer to whether or not it is possible to do this. So is this possible? I'd like to have a fullscreen browser open (so it doesn't have the toolbars on top) along with skype. Link :
There have been a lot of questions about how to boot directly into desktop and avoid Metro. My question is just the opposite. When I'm in Metro and I open an app, it first brings up the desktop and then the app on top of it. I would like to open an app without opening desktop. Is there a way?
Right out of the blue, windows 8 loaded up painfully slow so i restarted my HP g6 laptop. After restarting the laptop the user login screen appeared fine fine but as soon as i login the metro tile screen flashes to a default coloured desktop screen and back to to the metro screen every second. It is continous and you can't access anything as the screen jumps to the other one before you can even do anything!
My laptop is only a few months old and there has been no hardware change/upgrade.I managed to get into the system restore and restored to a point a few days before this issue started but, when the laptop restarted, the issue remain and the screen jumped between the 2 screens.
There are no error msgs or any can of beeps that appear. There was nothing of any note that happened prior to this issue occurring and the laptop worked fine until this issue.

How I can revert back to normal Desktop operation?
I bought a Dell 17r laptop a couple days ago and about an hour ago my IE 10 Metro switched to desktop when I clicked it, and now it wont switch back to metro! ive reset the IE TWICE now and nothing worked, I've tried multiple solutions and NOTHING has work(obviously) the desktop version is ugly.
... without closing/minimize the metro app? When I'm working with Photoshop I always have my email open because of the meeting notes. The problem I'm having now is that everytime I focus back on Photoshop, the mail app closes/minimizes by itself. The same thing goes with Skype
I know that you can open that tiny multitasking window on the side, but it's just not efficient. Is there a way to remedy this?
The desktopUI all my software can connect fine to the internets, browsers, emaiclients, games etc etc. On the MetroUI nothing connects to the internet. for example with the windows app store i get the message (roughly translated from Dutch) "Windows store didn't connect to server or timed out, wait a few minutes and try again" clicking the back button top right, or the try again "link" have no response whatsoever.

I have an Asus N550JV touchscreen laptop that I use primarily as a desktop replacement with my external monitors. I have set everything up to use the desktop interface and desktop versions of all apps where possible. Today I decided to take the laptop out and am now using the touchscreen. I am looking for a way to have the interface automatically switch to a Metro interface for everything once it recognizes that I am using the touchscreen for a bit. Is there any way to set up this behavior?
I love Metro, but I think booting into it is worse for me than if the Start menu were hanging open everytime you booted 7. I have to say this is an additional step that makes it feel a bit forced, a bit in the user's face. How to go straight to the dekstop?
I have a Toshiba Laptop with a Core i3 2.27 GHz 4GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory and 500GB hard drive. Although this is a problem with both my laptop and desktop, desktop specs are in the specs section. When I boot up windows and then click Desktop in the Metro UI it loads very slowly. I have very minimal programs starting up with windows. I will post a screen shot below of what is starting up with windows boot on my laptop, and post the screen shot of my desktop when I get home. I believe that I have just what I should have booting. There is 2 Intel items that I left booting and some item names JJ, I am unsure if that is my user account or if that is some kind of spyware. Virus scans come back clean, I've done the boot time scan scanned the hard drive in my laptop from my desktop computer as well.
I have installed Windows 8 RP, and everything works fine, except I cannot access internet from metro apps: IE, Store, New, Mail etc. Does not access internet, even though I have access to internet from Desktop? I have tried everything, and googled for hours without any useful result.
I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?
I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.
I resized the main partition of the c drive and after the reboot something strange happened. I do have a mouse cursor but the screen is black. No metro, no regular desktop, nothing there. When I do control alt delete I get into task stuff and from there I can logon or log off users but all have the same result, a Black screen with only a mouse c cursor. No hardware changes done. Tried to do an auto repair but no result.
When I start a remote desktop connection it all works fine. After a random period of time the desktop icons, taskbar icons disappear, can not access metro, shortcuts do not work etc.. The whole screen starts flickering, desktop image as well.
A restart and reconnect fixes the problem for a while then it happens again and again.
I tried the connection from a macbook, another win 8 laptop, and iphone, all with the same result.
I have added some websites shortcut on my metro desktop; i.e. youtube, Yahoo mail etc. I would like to change the picture on this shortcut Icon.. Is it possible..
If you want to see email notifications on the lockscreen before you log in it's pretty easy.
Carry out the instructions to auto log in on startup
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup
then have a batch file in the start-up folder to lock the pc
Rundll32.exe User32.dll,LockWorkStation
when the pc starts up it auto logs on with your live account, I get about 10 seconds of start screen before the batch file runs then it locks and I have email and whatever other notifications are active sat on the lock screen. You also have the benefit of any background apps starting up before you log in, speedfan, lcdsmartie things like that.
yesterday I noticed that by going to settings / notifications ("Show notifications from these apps") list is empty and no longer has to manage all app notifications on/off why?
I know how to manage the behavior of icons and notifications in Windows 8, but how do I delete programs from the list of icons and notifications (that appear on the taskbar)?
I initially created the thread below but I have since discovered the problem relates to many apps and not just the People app.
People App Opens then Crashes to Desktop
I have a new Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 Core Edition. After only a week I found most of the apps would crash to the Desktop on opening. I thought I had solved the problem by creating a new user account and reinstalling the apps but that only worked for a week before the same problem reappeared.
This is what I have discovered to date:
Initially most apps crashed on openingReinstalling the apps made many of them work but there are still some issues e.g. selecting Maps within Bing weather causes the app to crashThe apps work fine in a new user account or in other local accounts I have not used much to dateNone of the steps recommended in Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8 solves the problemI've spent an hour with Microsoft Support who have found no obvious problem and have escalated the problem to the next tier
The problem appears to be due to access rights and priveliges in user accounts since the apps work in other accounts or if I create a new account.
Where the apps are located for each user account and whether there is way of checking that they are set up to have the correct access rights and privileges.
I open up my Live tiles screen on my 2nd monitor. When I open an app, say facebook. All is fine. When I drag from top of screen to bottom with my mouse to close the app, it goes to desktop. Is there a way for me to go back to the Live tiles screen?
Also, is it possible to have the live tiles screen visible all times on my 2nd monitor. I use Stardocks Start8.
