i mean, i guess one can deal with it (like a boss!), it is definitely no dealbreaker.
"old/clean" versus "metrofied"
I love the new top bar, but it's become annoying after I've discovered Chrome in Windows 8 Mode. Is there any way to disable it?
GIF to explain what is happening:
If you install Chrome on Windows 8 and haven't set it as the default browser it works just fine.
But if you set it as your default browser the Chrome shortcut in the start menu will open a Metro app.
Here's how to disable the metro version.
I tried that as is in the tutorial. Disable/Enable Metro was added to the context menu, but if I click it the following error message was returned:
Script: C:WindowsToggle_Disable_Enable_Metro.vbs
Line: 3
Chan: 1
Error: Unable to open registry key

I use windows 8.1 and have enabled boot-to-desktop.
Every time after booting into windows, when I check task manager, there are some metro apps already running in the background, like reading list, onenote and reader.
Is there a way to stop metro apps from automatically running at startup?
EDIT: Ok, the issue resolved itself. I don't know how, but they are not running in the background anymore, except for store which is obvious.
I suppose they were doing some sort of scanning or indexing maybe.
as you know when we move the mouse on the top of the windows in desktop , the mouse changes to a hand and we can move the desktop.

I have checked the relevant registry keys, and both values are 0.
The only cause I can think of is Skydrive Sync my settings across devices..When I initially added a device, a Surface 2, settings on both machines differed, and then I enabled Sync on both.
It's a small annoyance, but that little red squiggly line is really beginning to bug me
When I start my computer the Metro screen appears then I have to go to the desktop to log on.
There must be some way to log on at the Metro screen?
Is there a way to allow desktop pop-ups to display in Metro that are desktop related. For example if I'm in Metro and my firewall (ESET) has a pop-up asking me to approve/deny a connection it displays to the desktop and so I can sometimes not realise it's there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy issue is that I'm working on a machine that is continuously switching between Desktop and Metro several times a second. It does it in clean boot mode (only Microsoft services enabled, everything else disabled), but not in Safe Mode. I'm running SFC /scannow at the moment, and I already ran linux badblocks /sv and CHKDSK (no errors). SMART status is okay, no triggers have been popped and the quick test passed.
Running Windows 8 Pro on an HP 2000.
I was wondering if it was possible to run the Metro/ Modern UI apps on the dektop screen in a window? It seems the new office does this and I really liked it. I find it extremely annoying using a fullscreen app on a 24" screen on my desktop PC.
The new Windows literally kills windows. I don't get why they would do this to desktop users.
There has been a sudden change in behaviour on my Windows 8.1 system:
If I press ALT+F4 when I wish to leave a Metro App I now get taken back to the desktop instead of the start screen. How can I correct this?
I finally figured out my Wake on LAN issues for my HTPC with my recent upgrade to widows 8.
Now my issue is how do I disable the 30 sec wait time for approval by currently logged in user when I try to establish a Remote Desktop connection?
I have tried to change the settings in gpedit allowing admin access with out users permission but it doesn't seem to work in widows 8.
Gradually getting my head around Windows 8 CP, however after a recent reboot the tile for "desktop" is now gone under metro.
how to restore? If I right click and browse all apps it isn't present.
Having navigated to "C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms" I can't see a desktop shortcut there but I'm fairly sure there was one before.
Windows 8 Desktop. Somehow I have changed something and now my desktop windows will not re-size or move. When I initially open a program or browser it opens fine in a small window somewhere on the screen. As soon as i grab the title bar 2 outlined windows appear on screen in Yellow and Red. When I let go of the title bar the program snaps to one of the two positions, when I try to move the window it just keeps snapping back.
So the desktop programs now seem to be behaving as if they were Metro apps and displaying using Metro Snap. It is really bothersome. How I can revert back to normal Desktop operation?
What I want to do is have the ability to play a fullscreen game or a fullscreen video or anything else like that, but have it only take up the screen that the desktop is taking, leaving the rest for a snapped skype or something like that. I found a good thread describing the problem, but no answer to whether or not it is possible to do this. So is this possible? I'd like to have a fullscreen browser open (so it doesn't have the toolbars on top) along with skype. Link :
View 1 Replies View RelatedThere have been a lot of questions about how to boot directly into desktop and avoid Metro. My question is just the opposite. When I'm in Metro and I open an app, it first brings up the desktop and then the app on top of it. I would like to open an app without opening desktop. Is there a way?
View 7 Replies View RelatedRight out of the blue, windows 8 loaded up painfully slow so i restarted my HP g6 laptop. After restarting the laptop the user login screen appeared fine fine but as soon as i login the metro tile screen flashes to a default coloured desktop screen and back to to the metro screen every second. It is continous and you can't access anything as the screen jumps to the other one before you can even do anything!
My laptop is only a few months old and there has been no hardware change/upgrade.I managed to get into the system restore and restored to a point a few days before this issue started but, when the laptop restarted, the issue remain and the screen jumped between the 2 screens.
There are no error msgs or any can of beeps that appear. There was nothing of any note that happened prior to this issue occurring and the laptop worked fine until this issue.

I know that you can open that tiny multitasking window on the side, but it's just not efficient. Is there a way to remedy this?
The desktopUI all my software can connect fine to the internets, browsers, emaiclients, games etc etc. On the MetroUI nothing connects to the internet. for example with the windows app store i get the message (roughly translated from Dutch) "Windows store didn't connect to server or timed out, wait a few minutes and try again" clicking the back button top right, or the try again "link" have no response whatsoever.

I have an Asus N550JV touchscreen laptop that I use primarily as a desktop replacement with my external monitors. I have set everything up to use the desktop interface and desktop versions of all apps where possible. Today I decided to take the laptop out and am now using the touchscreen. I am looking for a way to have the interface automatically switch to a Metro interface for everything once it recognizes that I am using the touchscreen for a bit. Is there any way to set up this behavior?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI love Metro, but I think booting into it is worse for me than if the Start menu were hanging open everytime you booted 7. I have to say this is an additional step that makes it feel a bit forced, a bit in the user's face. How to go straight to the dekstop?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Laptop with a Core i3 2.27 GHz 4GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory and 500GB hard drive. Although this is a problem with both my laptop and desktop, desktop specs are in the specs section. When I boot up windows and then click Desktop in the Metro UI it loads very slowly. I have very minimal programs starting up with windows. I will post a screen shot below of what is starting up with windows boot on my laptop, and post the screen shot of my desktop when I get home. I believe that I have just what I should have booting. There is 2 Intel items that I left booting and some item names JJ, I am unsure if that is my user account or if that is some kind of spyware. Virus scans come back clean, I've done the boot time scan scanned the hard drive in my laptop from my desktop computer as well.
