I tried fiddling with the power options, but no joy. I need to have my computer running while I'm away as I have it doing tasks like rendering video etc. I cannot have it go to sleep!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have protected my pc at work and locked it down so that no employee can access windows 8. Only problem is that yesterday I accidently pressed reset button midway whilst windows was loading and it brought up the safe mode screen. Since I have a full backup image of my drive, I can always reload my preferred setup whenever I want via usb install, so I don't want windows to run into safe mode at all - EVEN IF IT MEANS I COULD LOSE DATA!
My question is How can I disable this safemode feature from starting at all if windows crashes?
After waking from sleep mode...is there way to avoid having to resign back in?

I recently updated my Studio 1458 Notebook from 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro. It is a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-520M, 8 GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066 MHz RAM, 512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 Video Card, 500 GB SATA @7200 RPM HDD.
Since upgrading, I have had no control over the Sleep function. I have changed all settings I can find on CONTROL PANEL<POWER OPTIONS, and still the system goes to "Sleep Mode" if I do not touch it for a few minutes. It even went to Sleep DURING the Windows 8 installation, which made it take longer than expected.
as you know when we move the mouse on the top of the windows in desktop , the mouse changes to a hand and we can move the desktop.

I have checked the relevant registry keys, and both values are 0.
The only cause I can think of is Skydrive Sync my settings across devices..When I initially added a device, a Surface 2, settings on both machines differed, and then I enabled Sync on both.
It's a small annoyance, but that little red squiggly line is really beginning to bug me
I am a new bee using Windows 8 on a Samsung Tablet PC. I use Kingsoft office and Jarte writer in desktop mode. In Desktop mode every time I .write I have to need to press keyboard symbol. Now my q. is: Is there a keyboard which pops out like it comes on in Metro mode? Also is there a soft keyboard complete with Function keys etc, which also can be sized according to size of the Tablet?

View 3 Replies View RelatedHow to make Windows 8 desktop more usable? I was thinking of adding a mac os x style dock, since that seems a lot easier to use on a tablet. The icons are all pretty big and easily clickable.
Was thinking of modding the skin of windows 8 to make it look like mac os x. It seems like mac os x desktop is more touchscreen friendly,as in everything is accessible easily. Making the desktop bigger/up font just makes it look too big.
I have a new Asus Transformer Book T100 running win 8.1 (not RT). Whenever I launch IE from the Tile screen it switches to desktop then IE launches in desktop version. Some setting I need to adjust? First experience with Win 8 & touchscreen.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got my tablet and the first thing I did is have it start in Desktop-mode so I never have to see that awful and useless toy Metro UI. Even on a tablet the desktop is superior. Go figure. I hate every time I accidentally click that "Start" button which brings me to Metro.
Anyway, the only way I can use the built-in camera from desktop is to "search" for camera and the Metro camera app shows up and I can take pictures. I even created a desktop short cut in desktop mode for that camera. But since that is a Metro app, it doesn't seem to work from Desktop.
1. is there a way to make this Metro camera app work from Desktop?
2. Is there a different desktop app or program to use camera from desktop?
It also would be nice to be able to zoom and have flashlight etc. this camera doesn't seem as great as my phone camera. Or am I missing something?
When in desktop mode, I have folders I have created sitting on the desktop where the txt is not present. If I hover over, or right-click and select properties can obviously see that info. Please note the problem is not that the txt is the wrong color or something, its that the text is not there.

I was messing around with the Win 8.1 preview in a VM tonight and noticed that you can have the Desktop Mode opened half screen along with Modern UI apps on the other half of the screen. I haven't heard about this capability, only 2 Modern UI apps sharing the screen at any one time.

Yes, IE is only showing thumbnails on the desktop icon on the taskbar. I can't get it to show the proper window at all! It used to be OK. I'm sure it's something obvious.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set Chrome as my default browser and have it open in Desktop mode, but it always opens in Metro Mode if it's the default. I've tried the "Relaunch Chrome in the desktop" (lots of times), but it just beeps and stays in Metro mode. This used to work, but it suddenly changed a few weeks ago, and I simply can't work out how to get it back. I didn't change anything. (Windows or Chrome may have behind the scenes, but I didn't fiddle with any of the levers). Chrome just started launching in Metro mode one morning, and nothing I do will change that if it's the default.
The only way I can open Chrome in Desktop Mode is to set IE as the the default browser. And that is most definitely not what I want. I'm a web dev, and love the Chrome dev tools, so want it as the default.
To make things even more confusing, I've got 2 Win 8.1 machines side by side, and Chrome works exactly as I want on one of them, and not on the other. I've looked everywhere I can think of, and both systems are set up identically, from what I can see.
i have just discovered my desktop mode is completely dead of internet connection, I cant use utorrent or email etc. the metro works fine its just the desktop that's dead. I run wireless
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows 8 Pro, with two USB external drives attached. One drive is "dormant", and the other is used for file backups. I have noticed that when the computer exits from sleep mode, either one or both external USB drive folders will open on the desktop. I can only guess this signifies that these drives may have been accessed while the computer was in sleep mode.

When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.
I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.
I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.
I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.
My laptop has an HD screen, 1920x1080 to be exact. Some of my desktop icons are out of focus and blurry, but others aren't. At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox?
