View 9 Repliesunderlying all this metro stuff, is there still a stock/vanilla interface available somehow? when working on a desktop/laptop. take the bitlocker dialogues for example.
i mean, i guess one can deal with it (like a boss!), it is definitely no dealbreaker.
"old/clean" versus "metrofied"
I love the new top bar, but it's become annoying after I've discovered Chrome in Windows 8 Mode. Is there any way to disable it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIf you install Chrome on Windows 8 and haven't set it as the default browser it works just fine.
But if you set it as your default browser the Chrome shortcut in the start menu will open a Metro app.
Here's how to disable the metro version.
I tried that as is in the tutorial. Disable/Enable Metro was added to the context menu, but if I click it the following error message was returned:
Script: C:WindowsToggle_Disable_Enable_Metro.vbs
Line: 3
Chan: 1
Error: Unable to open registry key

I use windows 8.1 and have enabled boot-to-desktop.
Every time after booting into windows, when I check task manager, there are some metro apps already running in the background, like reading list, onenote and reader.
Is there a way to stop metro apps from automatically running at startup?
EDIT: Ok, the issue resolved itself. I don't know how, but they are not running in the background anymore, except for store which is obvious.
I suppose they were doing some sort of scanning or indexing maybe.
Is practicability to remove metro ui and install windows 8.1 on desktop mode?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIE Metro tile is missing from my metro start screen. It's not in the 'all apps' list either. when I go to program default, it is set as the default browser. I went through all the checks in the tutorial on here, but at best, I can only get the desktop IE tile to pin to start. I would rather have the metro version tile on my start.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Sony Vaio and I'm having a problem with selection.
As seen in the image below, when I select something - anything - it becomes highlighted by this terrible blue box. What can I do to disable it? I can't find any options in Control Panel related to this.
I just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS function keys commands go above a software's shortcut commands. So you can't press F5 for refresh and so forth.
After a lot of googling, it seemed it's impossible to switch Windows 8's features such as second screen (f10) off, or have them behind a Fn+F10 type commands.
I've tried already to achieve this with autohotkey but even with administrative rights etc, Windows 8 won't let me bypass or override the OS function keys features.
This is actually the main reason in considering to sell my brand new Lenovo laptop (which I like) and switch back to Apple.
I have a win2012 server with many users on it and some jerk likes to delete drives, so I need to disable disk managmeant for everyone but myself.

I am unable to run "gpedit.msc", it gives me the message that windows cannot find gpedit.msc..
I have installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop, and I recently discovered that MS has enabled encryption by default for people who sign in with a MS account, without their knowledge or consent, in the name of supposedly protecting your data. This may seem to be a good thing for most people, but I find it to be a blatant violation of privacy, especially in an age where MS holds your recovery key and will turn over your info to the NSA/Prism/etc on the government's whims.
I plan to use another form of encryption called DiskCryptor, for which only I hold the key, and there are no known backdoors or security vulnerabilities. It would be a burden on my system to have 2 forms of encryption enabled at the same time, and so I wish to disable it.
I found this page (Windows 8.1 Will Start Encrypting Hard Drives By Default: Everything You Need to Know) and it details everything. But the instructions at the bottom of the page for disabling dont work, I followed everything to the tee and there is no such option.
At this point I'm seriously considering rolling back to Windows 8, or even 7.
I'm finding that I am unable to disable secure boot. I can change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy BIOS and that disables secure boot, but in Legacy mode I can't do what I'm trying to. I can't select the Secure Boot menu in the BIOS options--it's always greyed out. I've done some research and some sources said to hold shift while shutting down "to ensure you're really stopping Windows before trying to enter the BIOS" and hitting F2 on startup. I tried that but it made no difference. I've tried fiddling around with getting to the BIOS in other ways (forgotten how, now) and of course that made no difference.
I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Acer Aspire V-3551 that came with Windows 8 preinstalled.
How to disable libraries in Win 8? I would like them totally gone. No reference anywhere. No turning back up like a bad penny. I know where I put my files. This is not a convenience, it's an intrusion. I am sure they are a good thing for some, but not for me.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI was playing around trying to get rid of a "Could not reconnect all network drives" error at boot. One I found said to do the following:
Type gpedit.msc on the search box in the menu bar,
1. Select "Windows Settings", then
2. Select "Security Settings", then
3. Select "Local Policies", then
4. Then highlight "Security Options", from there look on the right pane
5. Then select Network security: LAN Manager authentication level and set the drop down menu to "Send LM & NTLM "use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated".
That had no effect for me so I want to Disable the policy but there is no way to do that I can see. I failed to note what it was set to initially so I'm not sure if it was Disabled or not and if not what value it should have. Google tells me the default for Win 7 was Send NTLMv2 responses only so that's what I set it to but I think it was set to Disable.

I like the White border like this: [URL] .....
In Windows 8 we can use the trick here: [URL] ....
Is there any way to make the white window border possible (with different taskbar color) in 8.1 .
It's quite pointless for me, since I'm connected via cable, and I can't seem to do anything at all with the sidebar anyway. Double clicking on the only available network does nothing.
Any way to disable it? It's mildly annoying when it pops up when I misclick the icon. It also, I think, is what causes the right side of the screen to be rendered black when Desktop Window Manager is turned off. The black portion of the screen is the same size as the sidebar, and since turning off dwm.exe turns off Metro rendering, and the sidebar is the only Metro element I can think of that I can reach from the desktop, it makes sense that it might be the culprit.
