Disable Highlight Of A Selection
Aug 31, 2013
I just bought a Sony Vaio and I'm having a problem with selection.
As seen in the image below, when I select something - anything - it becomes highlighted by this terrible blue box. What can I do to disable it? I can't find any options in Control Panel related to this.

My x86 win 8.1 desktop continues to highlight misspelled words, wether this option is enabled or disabled in Settings, PC and Devices, Typing or not.
I have checked the relevant registry keys, and both values are 0.
The only cause I can think of is Skydrive Sync my settings across devices..When I initially added a device, a Surface 2, settings on both machines differed, and then I enabled Sync on both.
It's a small annoyance, but that little red squiggly line is really beginning to bug me

When I highlight text in Word 2010, the background of the highlight becomes white and the text itself becomes dark blue. Is there a way to change it in Regedit (or elsewhere)?
I tried fiddling with colors here, but no luck:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Colors
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop Colors

I have just started using Windows 8 and like it very much. I do have one very small problem.I have dual language, English and Hebrew. When the program initiates the language selection comes up in Hebrew. I would prefer it to initialize in English. I haven't been able to determine if this can be changed. Is there a way to accomplish this?

There is a screen - I don't know its proper name - it's the screen where you go to choose a user account to log in. This is the same screen you see when you want to 'switch user.'
How do I change the background color of this screen?

No matter how many times I go to 'View' settings, every time I choose a new window (i.e. opening a folder) I am always met with a small-format window rather than a full-screen, full-size one. I also am met with random lists instead of 'medium-sized icons', which I have opted for and chosen as default in 'view'. Have I missed a colossally simple tick in a box?

As a Multi-Monitor user I'm currently plagues with 3 Problems concerning the Metro Style OnScreenKeyboard.
1. For most of the time it appears on the wrong Monitor - Not the one with touch capability thus forcing me to manually move it over to the right screen which, at best, is annoying.
It appears it's kind of bound to where the Start Screen currently resides but it would be a lot more useful if it could be tied to one screen.
2. On 2 of my Screens it takes up about - the screen space limiting their usefulness while on my other 2 about - which is more desireable - what triggers this behavior and how can I control it?
3. Is there an option to force the OSK to keep the last setting of which Keyboard I've used? It keeps reverting to the simple one when I'd like to use the Advanced one.

I edited the registry at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced and added both a DisablePreviewWindow and DisablePreviewDesktop value and set them to 0x01. Still, the windows appear. UAC is entirely disabled.

underlying all this metro stuff, is there still a stock/vanilla interface available somehow? when working on a desktop/laptop. take the bitlocker dialogues for example.
i mean, i guess one can deal with it (like a boss!), it is definitely no dealbreaker.
"old/clean" versus "metrofied"

I just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS function keys commands go above a software's shortcut commands. So you can't press F5 for refresh and so forth.
After a lot of googling, it seemed it's impossible to switch Windows 8's features such as second screen (f10) off, or have them behind a Fn+F10 type commands.
I've tried already to achieve this with autohotkey but even with administrative rights etc, Windows 8 won't let me bypass or override the OS function keys features.
This is actually the main reason in considering to sell my brand new Lenovo laptop (which I like) and switch back to Apple.

I have installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop, and I recently discovered that MS has enabled encryption by default for people who sign in with a MS account, without their knowledge or consent, in the name of supposedly protecting your data. This may seem to be a good thing for most people, but I find it to be a blatant violation of privacy, especially in an age where MS holds your recovery key and will turn over your info to the NSA/Prism/etc on the government's whims.
I plan to use another form of encryption called DiskCryptor, for which only I hold the key, and there are no known backdoors or security vulnerabilities. It would be a burden on my system to have 2 forms of encryption enabled at the same time, and so I wish to disable it.
I found this page (Windows 8.1 Will Start Encrypting Hard Drives By Default: Everything You Need to Know) and it details everything. But the instructions at the bottom of the page for disabling dont work, I followed everything to the tee and there is no such option.
At this point I'm seriously considering rolling back to Windows 8, or even 7.

I'm finding that I am unable to disable secure boot. I can change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy BIOS and that disables secure boot, but in Legacy mode I can't do what I'm trying to. I can't select the Secure Boot menu in the BIOS options--it's always greyed out. I've done some research and some sources said to hold shift while shutting down "to ensure you're really stopping Windows before trying to enter the BIOS" and hitting F2 on startup. I tried that but it made no difference. I've tried fiddling around with getting to the BIOS in other ways (forgotten how, now) and of course that made no difference.
I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Acer Aspire V-3551 that came with Windows 8 preinstalled.

How to disable libraries in Win 8? I would like them totally gone. No reference anywhere. No turning back up like a bad penny. I know where I put my files. This is not a convenience, it's an intrusion. I am sure they are a good thing for some, but not for me.
