View 5 RepliesI'm trying to use my 3tb external hard drive with my new Toshiba laptop running Windows 8.1. At first the computer recognised the drive, but when I tried to open the files I wanted, (masses of JPEG and RAW photo-files) they did not appear. There were four files listed..all of which were used to run the drive itself...no folders visible at all.
I figured there might be a problem with access so went to a number of possibilities and altered all manner of permissions and sharing options to what I thought would work. The upshot is that now the drive comes up as 'Location Unavailable'...access denied.
Previously I had used the drive on an ancient Vista machine, and still having this laptop, checked that the external drive was working,(it still is, with all files and folders still visible). I also plugged in my Sandisk Cruzer flashdrive and that opened no problems. right click on the drive>properties>sharing>advanced sharing>permissions>checked that 'everyone' was selected then allowed full control, change, read and then OK'd...still no difference.
Lately, I have been experiencing a slowdown on my computer. As any other person would do, I opened Task Manager and saw that a process called WMI Provider Host took 20-30%, of CPU. I tried to end the task but it continued to open up. I went into my anti-virus software and found nothing wrong. I looked into my Event Manager and got back to a .dll opening the script making WMI Provider Host open. the .dll is called cimwin.dll. That opens it and other Activity Transfers open it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am connecting a 640GB Samsung G2 Portable External Hard Drive to my HP Pavilion 15 Laptop.
The external hard drive works on other desktop and laptop computers here at work, but when connected to the HP Pavilion (Windows 8.1 OS) it shows up as a Local Disk (H: but when trying to Open the drive it says:
"Location Not Available H: is not accessible The device is not ready."
What should I do?
The issue is finding the file location for my flash drive. My computer only has 3 external USB ports. I have tried all of them, when the flash drive is plugged in somewhere on my computer it should indicate another drive location. I can't find anything....not sure where to look or if I'm looking in the right place. All that shows is c: drive & E: drive. The E: drive is exclusive for the OS system restore (can't be used; not accessible for anything else). The only other is the DVD drive. Nowhere can I find evidence of the flash drive plugged into the USB.
I have all the essential drivers & everything is up to date [I have a task scheduler & Driver updater software installed. All drivers are up to date. This is a new computer, only 2 months old].
I have gone into device manager & checked all the USB & composite serial bus controllers to make sure they are powered on (my computer has an energy saving management thing & it will possibly deactivate the hubs when not in use). According to the power management settings they are not set to "sleep" but all ports are active. I can't figure out why I can't find my drive, nothing is appearing when I have the flash drive plugged in.
I have run into some networking problems and I think I have narrowed it down to the homegroup provider.
I have 4 windows 8 pro x64 computers connected to a router. Up until now, I have been able to disable the homegroup provider service because I don't want to use the homegroup and don't want to see it in my file explorer. I have been able to connect to all the shared computer drives up until I tried to disable the homegroup provider on my netbook. When I did this I lost the ability to connect to other shared computers. I re-enabled the provider, however I still cannot see drives on other computers. I can now see my netbook on the other shared computers.
I'm trying to stream TV program videos available from my TV provider on my Windows 8 laptop (Firefox from the desktop). I get a black screen and no audio. On my W7 desktop it works flawlessly.

I can't seem to find the Cookies location in 8.1.
In Windows 8 it was at : C:UsersusernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoft
I've unchecked "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)". Where Cookies are stored in Windows 8.1?
Is there any way to persuade Windows to find where I am? Windows situates me a few counties away.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to migrate my old XP Firefox persdict.dat file content over to Windows 8. It is not where it was supposed to be.
c:UsersJohnDoeAppDataRoamingMozillaFirefoxProfilesUnique-1234-IDpersdict.dat
The only persdict.dat file I can find is for Thunderbird. (I'm fairly certain the apps don't share a file.) I go to Firefox and type something into a random website's comments (dorkdorkdork), and right click and save that to the Firefox custom dictionary, but I'm not able to find that string anywhere on the PC? So if I go to C: and F3 to search for dorkdorkdork, it should be able to find that text on the machine right? Since the unique text is in a standard unencrypted text file.
I have a few Programs that have Databases. When the program is setup, the Database gets setup in My Documents. If I change the location to another folder, the Program still shows the Folder in My Documents. Is there a way to stop this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to do this in 8? I've been doing it since Vista, but I can't seem to make it permanent in 8.
Redirect a folder to a new location
I need the default my documents folder to be on a different drive, I know I can "add another location" for the library, but when programs automatically use "My Documents" they still go into the C: instead of being they would be directed to the D: because of the above procedure in the link.
No Apps can find my Location. (their not finding an incorrect location, but not finding ANY location info). I have Windows Location Platform enabled in Control Panel. I have Let Apps Use My Location turned on in User Settings. All apps have Location turned on..but. NONE OF THEM can find location.
One App will give me this error "Location Service Error: Either using the current location is blocked, or network is down".
Is it possible I inadvertently disabled an essential startup program or service?
I've had this error for some time wherein I would try to open my documents folder and I get this message every time: 'C:UsersMeDocuments is not accessible. The file name, directory name, and volume label syntax is incorrect.' I also noticed that nothing was inside the folder at all, as I've checked its properties.
However, it seems that all those original files in the documents folder along with the folder itself seemed to have been moved to a different directory, as I managed to open it from my desktop in the windows explorer. It only appears from there too, as I've checked my libraries and no documents folder existing as well.
The only time It did open was when I tried creating a shortcut of that inaccessible folder onto my desktop and opening it from there. It's bothering me because I can't seem to install anything properly without a message telling me that it can't access my documents files or that it can't find the directory, etc.
I have Win 8.1 running in my PC; I don't know how and when, but the default location of screenshots (as taken by pressing Win key and PrntScr together) has changed to a random folder somewhere in drive E. I know that location, and if this is possible, how can I change that default location to wherever I want?

There is a location with path %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftNetworkCo nnectionsPbk that contain vpn configurations except user name and password. I need the location that store user name and password.
How to delete or disable that folder I accidentally created don't know how, because I want to change those folders to under D drive, how to change location folder to another drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAlways when i install a new version of windows i change the default location of music, documents, downloads etc. Accidentally i change the documents folder to Documents without the after D: (don't know why windows let me choose this location in the first place). But I can't change the location, every time i right click on the documents folder to change the location, explorer crashes.
First I thought it wouldn't be a big problem by changing the default folder in different programs to D:Documents for example in Office. But for soms programs it's a problem, I can't change the default folder and it takes Documents which gives an error.
It's also creating random documents folders on my D partition.
How can I change the default folder for documents? I'm not talking about the library folders, but the folders underneath "This PC"
In Windows 8/RT, you can press WINKEY+PRT SCR to save a screenshot to C:Users\%username%My Picturesscreenshots. Is there a way to change this location via the registry?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who was deleting downloads and accidentally deleted her documents folder as well (Folder was stored on a external portable hard drive). She went to the recycle bin and clicked the file and chose restore, it showed all positive signs and removed it from the recycle bin, but there is no trace of where it went. It is not anywhere on the external hard drive (which was connected when she did the restore from recycle bin). I tried searching everywhere and there is no sign of it, where it went? We tried downloading a free data recovery program, but it is still scanning and will take another 4 hours.
