Hardware Drivers :: PC Won't Boot - Making Cycle Of Whirring Noises?
Aug 24, 2013
Basically my PC has always (last few years) randomly just shut down after I boot it up or freeze, but after the initial few resets it would be fine until I turned it off. Today it did it's usual of freezing up (at login) I held down the power button then waited then turned it back on, but instead of turning on it just kept a black screen and kept whirring in a cycle. Long (fan) brrrrrrrrrrr fade down then shorter one then back to long. I've tried turning it off at the plug leaving it and then trying again but no luck.Specs.
A friend said to remove the cmos battery and turn on off then put back but still no luck

I just bought a Dell Inspiron laptop 17i17RM-2419sLV almost a month ago. Today the computer has started making a soft clicking noise that goes in sync with the flashing hard drive light. Is my hard drive bad already? I'm in grad school and can't afford for this to suddenly crash on me again. I actually bought the same make/model right before this and the hard drive crashed three weeks after I bought it. It was replaced for me and now here I with a almost constantly blinking light and accompanying clicking sound.

So, i got me some DVR based programs used to monitor multiple locations on the same tv.
Is there any soft out there that can do this, cycle through alt-tab at specific time intervals?
I have found one, but i can only set it to cycle at the same interval for all windows, i want to spend 10 minutes on the first window and just 1 on the second.

I will try to post a dump file the next chance I have in getting into safe mode. I have an Asus CM6870-CA010S with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 card. It has been running like a dream since I got it in April, then I performed the 8.1 update, and innocently updated the drivers. Bad plan. For the past week I've fallen into the labyrinth of uninstalling the card, subsequent iterations of the drivers, clearing registries, performed the "Refresh," all after reading the forums here, on Nvidia's boards, anywhere I can get logical info.
I finally found what I thought was the perfect recipe, uninstalling totally in safe mode, deleting the folders orphaned from uninstalls, cleaning the registry, disabling Window's automatic downloads for drivers and hardware... etc. I had solid uptime for an hour, and I'm not a gamer, and hadn't yet tested my main objectives- Photoshop and Premiere. But HD video was great, and I finally thought I had it licked. Then, black screen. I have no BSODs. The system seems to shut down so fast that it doesn't have time to make dump files, and WhoCrashed.exe keeps pointing to nvlddmkm.sys as the culprit when a dump is made, with either pagefile or IRQL not less or equal errors. I'm so done.
After trying virtually every solid recommendation I can find, I'm about to throw in the towel and either get a whole other brand of graphics card, or take it to the super expensive judgmental hipster repair shop. This post is my last hope, and I'll try to get a dump file the next chance it gives me enough uptime to collect one- and getting into Safe Mode with F8 is seemingly very random.

I use a wireless mouse - the Lenovo laptop touchpad and my thumbs screw up my typing at the most inopportune moments. I try to manually disable it at login, but forget. I can permanently disable the touch pad easy enough in its configurations, but sometimes, I do need to enable it - usually just temporarily.
I can make tasks easy enough. Is there a simple way I could make a task at login to disable my Synoptics TouchPad.. Keystroke combo is Fn+F6 to enable / disable it.
How do I get those keystrokes into a task ?

Tonight I used a program called Windows Hotfix Downloader to integrate the 3 updates for Win 8.1 with success. However it gave me folders and not an .iso. I was able to make an .iso with Power Iso but it says non bootable image. In the past I know I used a program to do this with XP,Vista, and Win 7. I tried to follow Power Isos instructions to do it but what to select when it asks for add boot info and wants a source what to put? I just can't remember what easy program I used in the past to make a bootable iso from files. It's not rufus or yumi...they will make a bootable USB. I was able to manually make a UEFI Bootable USB manually and copying the folders over to the flash but still want a bootable iso for archive.

what it really means to "back up" your data. I got a Seagate drive for making backups. Before I install it I need clarification.
The more I read about backups, files, settings and disc images I get more confused. I see that if I don't do it right and my computer crashes, I may have not saved what I needed.
First should I use the software supplied with the Seagate drive? Or use Windows?
Do all my files need to be in the libraries folder to get saved? Like documents, music, pictures and videos?
Do I need to make a system disc also? This is just to boot up the PC if it fails?

I was trying to install Kali linux as a partition on my windows 8, and was using EasyBCD to add Kali linux to the boot entry. Somehow I ended up deleting the Windows 8 boot entry, not deleting the Windows 8 drive but deleting the boot entry meaning I can't boot into it. I have tried MANY MANY MANY solutions to fix it. I've tried using a recovery disk but that just shows the windows logo and reboots and reboots and does the same stuff.
Eventually I just gave up and thought I'm just gonna get rid of this windows 8 which by the way came pre-install with my Toshiba L855-149, and just install windows 7. Of course I NEEDED my files so just an hour ago, I removed the hard drive from the laptop, put it into HDD Docking thing I have which allows me to add the hard drive as an external drive to my other win7 desktop PC. I started copying all my files which I am still doing now. I was thinking is there a way to make some sort of restore point from the hard drive or something? Is there another way to boot up windows 8?

I purchased a new laptop with windows 8 and used the options in windows 8 to create recovery media and chose the usb drive option. I was wondering if I would be able to copy the files in the usb drive onto my external HD; then if I ever need them I could put them back onto a usb drive and reinstall windows 8. I took a screenshot of the files on the usb drive.

I couldn't repair/replace my laptop's corrupt files doing an sfc or dism scan and had to do a reset as I couldn't do a refresh. I thought my laptop was clean when I created my last system image, last month, but when it came to using the system image I realised there was corrupt files on there too so I had to do another reset. What checks should I do before creating a system image? so I know that as well as there being no viruses there are no corrupt files either. Check for errors in Event Viewer and do an sfc and dism scan?

I just bought a new dell xps 15 which is really awesome by the way but the qhd resolution makes certain programs unusable. It's 3200x1800. So for instance I play online poker and when I downloaded a poker program the game client came up like 4 inches wide on the screen so the text is unreadable. I thought I would just have to use a smaller resolution like 1080p but the size of the game client didn't change when I changed the resolution. Resizing the client windows doesn't resize the text so what are my options? I am using windows 8.1 ....

I've a weird issue with Windows 8.1 and my mechanical hard drive. I've a 2TB Western Digital hard drive that's partitioned with one of the partitions being a Media partition (H) containing over 107 gig of images, mostly tiff files ranging from 80-700 meg. I'm a photographer who tends to edit it layers.
Anyway for some odd reason when I access a folder containing these files, my hard drive goes into a frenzy and starts making loud vibration noise as though the drive is thrashing rapidly. Additionally I get a green bar going across the address bar as though it's establishing access permission. I've checked the drive and initially it just had "Everyone" listed so I added Administrators, and myself. But it still acts as though it's seeking permissions...
Interestingly enough no other folder or partition goes into this frenzy; just the folders under H partition containing the tiff images.
My initial thought is it's a caching issues as the PC is trying to cache and display the thumbnails for these files but I'm not sure. And if it is, how do I fix?
BTW this is a replacement drive as I thought my other drive was defective since it was doing the same and had it RMA'd.
Also this is basically the same partition/orginization structure that was under my Win 7 machine and I never had this issue.

Platform: WIN 8.1 Spring Update
Using a local (domain) account to login to Windows
Using a MS Live account just for the purpose of installing Store apps
The first time you go to install a store app you are prompted for your Live account credentials. Once entered, the only choice is SAVE or CANCEL. Once SAVE is chosen Windows remembers the password and the user is not prompted next time they go to install a store app. I want the user to be prompted every time. It seems earlier version of WIN8 allowed this. Can it still be done? I looked for a registry hack to prevent the Live password from being memorized but could find none.

I decided to execute a general maintenance on my working computer. I cleaned all parts and contacts with isobutyl alcohol and changed the thermal compound I was using for Artic Silver 5. Now I'm facing a strange scenario. All the motherboard leds turn on when I turn the PSU on but the computer doesn't boot. No post and no fan activity.
May it be a problem with my PSU ?

If I add a SSD (Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive). Can I use it as the boot drive as well as the backup drive? Then use the existing 1TB HDD as the main storage drive. I need a backup drive so I figure if this works then it could give me a performance boost as well. How could this best be done to satisfy both needs? Would I put all the programs on the SSD and all the data on the HDD? My current drive is at 119GB used space. How do I determine how much back up space is needed?

I have an ssd (c) to boot win 8 pro 64 bit with one hd for backup (b) and two other hdd's (d and e) to install all my games to and personal files. My ssd was mounted on a 3.5" adaptor in a 5.25" bay so was partially floating so i ordered a 5.25" adaptor to fix it to.
Also my hdd for backup isnt used often so i bought a 5.25" hot swap bay for it so i can just plug in when i need to backup instead of having it constantly on.
When i plugged the drives back in i changed the sata 6 slots around a little and since then i can't get the pc to boot!
The hot swap bay seems to work power-wise but can't get to find if it works fully because i cant boot.
It seems to be a problem with the ssd as my asus sabertooth 990fx (rev 1) shows a constant "boot_device_led" light when it is connected but not with the others.
Basically when i turn the pc on it goes through POST but the mobo boot light stays on meaning its a boot problem?
I tried resetting the cmos a few times, changing ssd to different sata slots including the two sata 3 slots too, changing the sata connections from ahci to ide and back in the bios and none of this works.
One thing ive yet to do is turn off smart check in the hope it is a smart problem and will allow me to boot past the asus screen to try and repair the drive.
I'm not sure if its the ssd needs repairing or some kind of repair on the boot part of the drive or bios (boot choice)?
In the bios boot options it shows "boot manager" but i'm not sure the bcd is correct if I've moved hdd's around?

Windows 8 is installed on a ssd and a hdd, and both exhibit the same symptom.
The system includes GA-970A-UD3, FX-6300, DDR3 1866 4GBx2, 1TB SATA3 and 120GB SATA3 SSD.

I have an acer laptop that came preloaded with windows 8 64bit. I am unable to turn on test mode. It says "Setting is protected by secure boot" or something similar.
An option in the boot settings (accessed by holding shift key while restarting) is there to turn off driver signing restrictions but it isn't working for me at all.
I did it on my desktop with windows 8.1 (not preloaded) in order to set my mouse USB port to a higher frequency with a non-digitally signed driver.

I have a weird issue in which after a boot of the machine it will take some time for USB devices to become initialized, yes... this includes my USB keyboard and mouse. Win 8.1
i5
8gb ram
Intel HD 4000
Just a desktop without a video card.
In order to play World of Warplanes, they recommended a rollback to a previous version of the driver. I unistalled the video driver, downloaded the old one and restarted the computer.
Now the monitor (or monitors, as I tried with an Acer and a Samsung one) both pop up a "Input not supported" right after the Windows Logo even if a try to boot in Safe Mode (so, no, I can't enter Advanced Recovery Mode). The same after I try to boot from a USB.
The same error I got when I installed Windows 8.1, a month ago, but after the "Input not supported" remained for 15 minutes or so it restarted a couple of times, and after 40 de minutes the installation begun. Now I'm waiting for 2 hours and nothing.

I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop with Windows 8 on it. I have an external hard drive from a Windows 7 desktop. It recognizes the external hdd right away and I can access it but I can't figure out how to boot Windows 7 as the primary. I've tried changing boot order in bios but I've had no luck as it still boots Windows 8 first. Is there a way to use the Windows 7 as the primary drive ? Even a way to temporarly turn off the Windows 8 hard drive will work. I just need to access the Windows 7 hard drive without having to navigate through program files to have to open something.

I have an Asus CM6730 PC, bought in October, which had Windows 8 installed on it.
Everything was fine, until I decided to install the upgrade to Windows 8.1.
After a week or so, my mouse started to freeze up randomly and the only way to log out of the PC was by holding the power button down for several seconds. The next day, I was working on the PC, took a phone call and the machine went into standby mode - but wouldn't come back on when I press a key / moved mouse.
At that point I decided to restore the machine back to factory settings. This was done successfully so I was back to Windows 8. However - my problems have got worse - and now I am at the stage where the PC wont even boot up in Safe Mode - the screen just goes black.
I have read up on a few sites and I believe it could anything from driver related - to a faulty motherboard.
