View 2 RepliesOld vista pc died, kept a running backup disc every sunday up until august when I bought an Toshibe ex. hard drive.I had quite a few problems transferring the Toshiba into the windows 8 pc. Made multiple copies on the hard drive darn near 250 gigs. So erased all those files and transferred the backups I had on discs. They're in my pc but I don't know how to access them/. I installed a couple apps but I still don't see anything. I want to send attachments via email and the pc wants me to create an association in the default section. There is a list a mile long which I don't understand. Do i install some kind of app or is something else not setup right....
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm bravely tackling Windows 8 and am upset to find there is no button above web pages to 'send to mail recipient' or 'send link to mail recipient', which I found invaluable in XP.
The only way I could find to do it was create a shortcut on my desktop and then send that to a mail address but even that didn't work properly.
I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a Logitech K800 Keyboard (wireless/illuminated) and I'm continuing to be frustrated by the fact that the Mute button does not work. Oddly enough, I had the same problem with a previous Windows 8.0 Pro install -- it went away when I upgraded to Windows 8.1. But the problem started again shortly afterward (maybe a week or two). I have the latest drivers and apps installed from Logitech.
After a reboot, the first time I hit the Mute key momentarily mutes the sound but then the sound returns (maybe after 1 second). After that, hitting the Mute key has no effect at all.
I have searched Google for a solution but nothing matches my problem. Oddly there are reports of all volume-related keys not working, but the Volume up and Volume down keys still work for me.
My Internet is fine. I can connect with my iPhone, and with Ubuntu OS.
It's just the button in the bottom right hand corner (the wireless signal bars) doesn't do anything after I click it on my windows laptop.. It happens every so often disallowing me from connecting to the Internet in times when I need it.
My Internet connection icon/button (either on the desktop to the right of the task bar or on the settings when you slide in from right) doesn't work...
I mean when I click it it does absolutely nothing. Also, when I open the network and sharing center after clicking change adapter settings it loads forever.. I've got work to do and I need the Internet.. I don't know what to do I can't keep switching to Ubuntu..
I'm on Windows 8. Compressed Folder Tools is all grayed out. I was able to zip and decompress files recently.
I tried adding the context menu extract commands, per one of the tutorials here, but I get the right click heading without any choices. how to get this ribbon command section turned back on?
Just installed 8.1 and the "This PC" section of the navigation pane in file explorer has changed. In addition to listing the disk drives, it now lists six folders. how to remove the folders from the drive list?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there an app or a way to move/create shortcut tiles on Start screen for Wireless section for Modern UI settings. I just bought TF810 (YUPI!!!) and would love to have quick access to those parts of the system (sort of as in WP 7.x/8).
Battery level shown on tile/start screen (it is only shown in detail on task bar) would also be useful. I keep searching for it but no luck so far ....
I have Latitude 10 tablet that now has Enterprise edition of Windows 8 installed and this has removed the Dell Picks section in the Microsoft app store. Is there any way to get this back? I have an app installed on another device that is Dell exclusive and I cannot find any way to get it installed on the Latitude 10 even though it is a Dell device.
View 2 Replies View Relatedhow to get the top section of [URL] to display the top section. Everything under the date and tips in the blue bar shows up, everything above doesn't. I have already tried it in internet explorer(tried safe mode w/ no add ons), firefox, chrome with no luck. I uninstalled java, re-installed, I reset the internet back to factory setting, wiped out all the browsing history. Tried messing with the internet options in every combination I can. I don't know what else to try besides trying to factory reset this machine.

When I click now on one of the tiles/frames (e.g. fin, news,...) then I jump to the corresponding section. Fine.
But how do I return to the tiles/frames overview?
I tried ESC key but this didn't work.

Whats the magic key press?
Windows update has been really messing with my pc lately. I ran update and when it installed the updates my integrated mouse ended up not working. I rolled back update and installed the updates one by one and the one I ended up not installing was the camera codec pack. Now the problem I am having is that my touchscreen won't work. If I talk to HP support they do the most basic thing they can and then when they can't fix it they tell me that I have to ship it to them because hardware is broken.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI took a 10:42 minute video with my camera. It's 1.28 GB and the file type MTS. The issue is I need to email it and it's too big of a file to send whole. I'm not in favor of chopping it up, but will if this is the best idea. I want to keep the video private between a few people. I am aware most place such as youtube, vimeo(not enough space) and dropbox all have privacy settings. Though waiting eight hours for an upload is a bit lengthy.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe just got a Win 8 machine, and finally decided to make a workgroup to share printers. made the workgroup, named workgroup, on the new win8 box. two desktops with win7 connected perfectly.
I cannot get the xp laptop to connect, I changed the Name from mshome to workgroup, but it still does not work.
I had added an additional user account, and then later deleted it, however it keeps showing up as an option when you right click on a folder, click "Share With" it is still an available "user" to share with. How do I remove that user from the dropdown?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trouble sharing files with windows 8. I basically went into network & sharing center and turned all of the options to ON (or yes, whatever lol).
The machines are both running windows 8 on a wifi network.
I noticed a few things: If you right click the wireless network, you can "toggle" and turn on/off file sharing. This is a tad confusing, windows 7 never had this option. Also, do you need to be on a "homegroup" in order to share on windows 8?
There are a million variables!
Variable 1: Variable 1 is comprised of a million different variables and is the "network and sharing center". I Have all options set to "On", and still can't share.
Variable 2: Variable 2 is the right clicking on the WiFi network and clicking "turn network sharing on or off". Mine is set to off at the moment, but why is this separate from variable 1?
Variable 3: The final variable I can think of having a homegroup. I don't have a homegroup setup right now, do I need all machines to be on a homegroup to start file sharing between computers?
What I want: I want to be able to share entire computer contents between machines.
Back in the windows 7 days I used to be able to hit "run" and type in //computerame/c$ and I had complete file access to other computers on the network. How to accomplish that with Windows 8? That way I can access all files, not just "shares" on computers on the network.
PS: Right now, when I try to connect to other machines on the network, I get a username/password prompt. No matter what I input I get an error and it won't work.
Location is not available to mapped network drive in Windows 8 I'm trying to copy a file from my mapped network drive, which is something I've done 1,000+ times in Windows 7, but for some strange reason I get a location unavailable error when trying it in 8. I tried deleting and remapping the drive and then tried restarting the computer. Neither of these resolved the issue. I've noticed that I can copy it to my desktop but nowhere else. See the attached images for more information.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble sharing files from my Vista Laptop to my new Win 8.1 laptop. I can get into my shared public folder but nothing else. I want to be able to get at anything in my C drive but it says I don't have permissions. I have a home wireless network but I also hooked them together with an Ethernet cord and both networks are showing.
Last week I was running into a window asking for network credentials on the Vista laptop (but I didn't know what it meant because I never had a password ). This time I see the folders I've shared but can't get into them except Public folder.
With windows 7 i was able to do this by going to network settings and all of that and had no issues. Now with windows 8 I plug in my cable but it says the device is an unidentified network an I cannot figure out how to alter these settings.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 windows 7 pc's with same login-name/password that I can password protected share fine folders between them. Fron Explorer I right-click a folder and share it to the other pc by entering in the login-name/password. I know this is how it is suppose to work and it does. Now I'm trying to share folders between a newer windows 8.1 pc, the windows 7 pc's and think I know why it does not work, but not how to fix it. This is because I do not know windows 8.1 very well.
The Windows 8.1 pc has a different login/user-name of "uuuuu ttttt", a different password pwp, a ms account of hhhh@hhhhh.com a computer name cccc and the same workgroup name as the 2 win 7 pc's. I put a "uuuuu ttttt" user account with the pwp password on a win 7 pc which has a computername pc-pc, a login-name hh and the same password pw. I also put a hh/pw user account on the win 8.1 pc.
No matter what I enter for for a computer/user name when I try to share a win 7 folder with the specific windows 8 user account it says it cannot find that user. I think I should type in the Add box "ccccuuuuu ttttt".
When I try to share a win 8.1 folder ff it goes to advanced sharing and I can share, but does not let me exactly specify the the win 7 user, but just a general share. The win 7 pc then shows the share under network, but right clicking it says I do not have permissions for ccccff"
I do not seem to understand sharing in either direction with a windows 8.1 pc.
I have an orange crossover cable that I have connected to both machines and I set up sharing on both but the Windows XP machine doesn't show the 8.1 machine. I'm trying to pull some movies and music off my 8.1 laptop because I use my XP desktop as a media server of sorts.
I can't figure out how to get them to recognize each other and my connection just says "limited."
My System : I have two machines that share two monitors by the use of two KVMs. They both use Nviria GeForce vraphics cards (with twin DVI outputs).
One machine is Win 7 Pro X64 and the other is Win 8 Pro X64. Both have the latest Nvidia drivers. Both are full retail legal versions of the OS.
My Problem : When I switch between machines I usually lose one screen and it cannot be reactivated without a reboot. Sometimes the other screen reverts to its default resolution. This happens on every switch over with Win 8 and sometimes with Win 7 but not always.
I have discoverd that if I switch the 2nd screen forst and then the main KVM (which has the keyboard and mouse) then usually the Win 7 machine continues to see both screens. The Win 8 machine virtually always loses the primary screen (the mouse and keyboard attached to this KVM are unaffected and switch correctly always)
I suspect this might be an nvidia problem but short og buying a new graphics card I have no way of determining this.
I have just set up two new laptops running windows 8, and can successfully share files, and the printer connected to one of them, but I would like to also connect my laptop running Vista to be able to print. I can see both Windows 8 machines in file manager/devices on the Vista machine, but if I try to connect it asks for a username and password.
I haven't been able to work out what username it is looking for - tried a lot of combinations for each PC name with the homegroup password and log on passwords, but nothing seems to work.
I had to buy a new laptop that I could take with me to work, and of course it runs Windows 8 (which I absolutely hate, incidentally). I decided it would be nice if I could share files with my primary computer when I'm at home, which is a desktop running dual-boot Win7 and Ubuntu.
I initially set up a homegroup, but whenever I try to access laptop files from my desktop it always pops up with a "enter network username and password" dialog. I tried looking up solutions to that but so far haven't found anything that works. I made sure the clocks on both computers were the same, and I made sure that all network settings were the same on both, including the setting "do not use user accounts/passwords," but I'm still having the issue.
So, what's the best way for me to share/sync files on my laptop with the desktop's files while I'm at home?
I have several computers on my local wireless network:
- Windows 8 Pro
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Mac OS X
Right now to copy file from one to another I use USB Flash key which is pretty time consuming, especially if I have to do it 100 times a day.
So I was thinking, is there any way to share a single folder for read/write access among all those computers?
My wife's set up her calendar on her Windows 8 laptop, and we'd like to share it so we can view it on our android phones.
Is it possible to transfer her appointments from the Windows 8 calendar to Google Calendar? Either by exporting or associating with the Google calendar?
Alternatively, can we share the calendar so we can view it on devices other than the laptop?
I have a windows 8 laptop with a 3G USB modem. I'm trying to share it's internet connection via my wifi network. The other two pc's on the network runs XP and Vista.
I've managed to get the network working, all pc's see each other and they can share files, etc, but just the damn internet won't share.
I've changed my router to use the same ip range as the wifi on the windows 8 pc, 192.168.137.x. I've ensured that the modem's network connection is shared. all the pc's belong to the same workgroup called, WORKGROUP.
In services i have ICS running, i've tried restarting this service.
What bothers me is that my wifi network on my windows 8 pc shows as "unidentified network", even though i have made sure that everything is set to shared that should be set to shared. so i don't know if that could be part of the problem?
I've also tried setting up the vista pc with a static ip and setting it's default gateway and primary dns to the same ip as the Windows 8 pc.
Attached are screenshots of my ipconfig.
I am trying to set up a workgroup, not a homegroup, and all of the target computers are setup in the default group "WORKGROUP." I'm using a workgroup to allow cross platform sharing. Anyways, when I right click on a folder then Share With > Specific People > Add the workgroup is not listed.
