Debugging :: BSOD Playing L4D2 And When Turning Into High Performance Power Plan
Jan 17, 2014
I own my MSI laptop since last october. I have random BSOD's, I would say 1-2 per week, and especially when I am playing left fo dead 2 (2-3 per hour), and when I turn the high performance power plan on (5-6 per hour). I have a killer network card, and I heard that this card was the cause of a lot of BSOD. But I do not see the link between l4d2 and the high perf. power plan. I always keep all my drivers up to date. This is very annoying, I alwas leave my laptop on to download games on Origin/Steam, or to do other task and when the BSOD occurs, I am just wasting my time...

In the future I'm planning to build a new computer to replace this old hunk of junk and I'm curious as to one thing as I'm not entirely sure on this. Just how safe is using the High Performance Power Plan in Windows 8.1?
You see, my current rig is running an old i5 661, normally on the Balanced Power Plan on an old ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe Motherboard with a GTX 660 and 4GB of RAM on 32-bit Windows 8.1.
But my future plan is to use an i5 4690K with a Corsair H110 All In One Water Cooler for CPU Cooling on a Z97 Motherboard and 8GB of RAM in 64-bit Windows 8.1.
I'm hoping to get quite a bit of performance on this next computer cause hey... I'm planning on using it for gaming and such. But also web browsing and chatting with friends. I hear how High performance is suggested for 'optimising' Windows 8.1 but how much safer is it...
And how much of a performance increase could I possibly see in comparison to the old rig?

After installing the 8.1 Pro update on a fresh install of 8 Pro, I only entered the Power options one time: to change the "high performance" plan to never turn off the display. (as I usually do when setting up windows)
Today, I noticed my display turn off after a few minutes, so I went to see if something had changed my power plan. To my surprise, I have found that I now have over FIFTY copies of the High Performance Power plan! Many of them have different settings in minutes regarding when the display shuts off, and when the PC goes to sleep.
I can't delete any of them, as windows apparently considers them ALL as default plans. If I didn't create these plans, how did they get there? How can I delete them? I know deleting default power plans is dangerous and can cause errors so I just want to avoid another re-install of windows.

For the longest while I've had issues with my Windows 8.1 ignoring my selection of power options. By this I mean by CPU will stay clocked at 1.4GHz when it should be hitting around 2.3GHz when I set to high performance from power saving mode.
In the past it's cleared up by itself or through reboots but I'm thoroughly pissed off and I want it fixed.

I have experienced numerous BSoDs on my Windows 8 install. Under the event viewer I always get the Event 41 (Kernel Error) message, and I have experienced multiple variations of the BSoD with reasons including "irql_not_less_or_equal", "irql_not_less_or_equal: dxgmms1.sys" and "kernel security check failure".
Over the time I have reinstalled Windows 8 at least twice (including reformatting the primary HDD on all occasions), replaced nearly all the components in my PC, including case, video card, PSU (pretty much everything except the motherboard and ram).
The errors generally occur when I am using a high performance process such as playing a video game, watching HD movies or rendering.

I got a new laptop, and pretty much immediately after initial set up I shut my laptop, the next time I tried to open it it showed the BSOD, it has the error,system_thread_exception_not_handled (iastora.sys). After it does the restart my computer runs fine. I followed the directions and included the file.

Everytime I turn off my system the normal way, the next time I turn it on, it boots twice before Windows logon display and, in the worst, a BSOD shows this message: "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" related with "iaStorA.sys"
I've already tried checking any problem with components of my laptop with Dell software and after hours of tests it doesn't found anything wrong, so I hope this is something with software and not a compatibility problem of the new HDD with my laptop at all. The errors I've found on Event Viewer of Windows related (I suppose) with those problems above are these:
Failed Quick Windows startup with a status of 0xc0000001 errorThe computer was restarted after an error check. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff80024e6b9df). A dump was saved in: C: WINDOWS MEMORY.DMP. This error can be caused when the system stops responding, crashes or loses power unexpectedly.I also tried to create a mini dump file, following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions, but I don't know if it will work, since I've followed the steps before the errors show up again, but I'll attach it anyway.

I have a Dell XPS 13 and the F3 button has a battery sign on it. Pressing it brings up some battery meter property . Is there any way I can change that to toggling between two of my Power Plans ("Power Saving, High Performance") each time I press?

Installed 8.1 about a week ago and I'm fairly happy with it so far (after removing charms, going straight to desktop etc) however I have a few minor problems.
Firstly my windows keyboard shortcut key is not working (Logitech G15)
Secondly in power options there are no plans that I can change, if for example I try to create a power plan I get the message "Your power plan information is not available". Tried sfc etc but no problems are detected.
Finally it just seems slower in some respects vs win 7 x64 ultimate, especially booting up. SSDs are all trimmed and aligned and all drivers are installed.

I recently reinstalled Windows 8 completely because I bought an SSD for in my laptop. I exported my power plans I used before the reset (when Windows was still on the HDD) and imported them again after the reset. In every power plan, Windows should go to sleep mode when closing the laptop lid, but that's not what's happening. Instead, Windows shuts down entirely, but the power light on my laptop indicates it's in sleep mode (flashing slowly). I also tried the built-in power plans (after just adjusting the appropriate setting), but the same happens. When i change the setting to do nothing (instead of going to sleep mode), it acts like it should: it does nothing.

I have an Asus K55N-DB81 running windows 8.1 and I decided to create a custom power plan. So I created one and went to "Advanced Power Settings" Option and then went to the Processor Power Management to change the Minimum CPU usage to 1% and the Maximum to 50%, I click Apply and Ok and X'ed out. I Closed the Lid, Came back to my computer and I checked to see if my CPU settings Changed back to 100% Minimum and 100% Maximum which it DID. I keep Changing it back but it keeps resetting itself ...

I just had my laptop install Windows 8.1 tonight. It's a clean install, by the way. Now the problem is I noticed that every time I restart my laptop it's power plan reverts back to "power saver", I had it set on "high performance" before. I own a Samsung laptop, model is NP535U3C-A01, Series 5.
Processor: AMD A6-4455
Memory: 8 GB
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 7500G
It stops charging at 99%.

Why Plan Settings and 'Advanced Power Options' configuration differs from each other?
My plan Settings sets the time to sleep with computer plugged in to 25minutes whereas the advanced power options has it on 180 minutes. Same applies to other options of the power options.
I was wondering what this mess is all about? I restored both to default and set the advanced to 'Never' and manually configure the Plan Settings.

I was playing Battlefield 4 for about 15 minutes, after I was finished I closed the game and my PC just died, as if I got a blue screen without the actual blue screen, fan speed of psu went to max and stayed that way until I restarted it multiple times, none of those times did it actually boot or display anything on the monitor.
Now when I start up my pc it turns on but nothing happens, display doesn't even come on and keyboard and mouse light up and turn off again.

I just purchased a new SSHD for my HP DV9830US laptop that was running Vista 64-bit. Purchased Windows 8.1 for a clean install on the new SSHD.
I noticed I would get random BSOD doing different tasks and what-not. Updated my BIOS and some other random drivers, and it seemed to fix the problem for the most part.
Then I installed Steam and Counterstrike, and while playing, the game will freeze and my system just does a hard reboot midgame after the freeze. The audio file that was last playing during the game does a repetitive laggy sound during the freeze.
I have used the SF_Debug_tool and attached the file.

I've attached the requested logs, as mentioned in the instructional posts relating to BSODs.
Some background to what happens:
- I open Hearthstone (through a Battle.net launcher)
- At random points in the game, I get a BSOD with either a BAD_POOL_HEADER or DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
What I've done:
- Checked on the Sony VAIO Update Center for any updates
- Run a Windows Update to ensure I have the latest patches
- Checked the Intel Website for any updated drivers
Worth noting:
- The wireless card drivers are higher than the version stated through VAIOUpdate (I don't know how I managed to do this). However, when I run the VAIOUpdate to set this to the right version, it fails to install. Should I rollback to the version listed in VAIOUpdate?

I recently purchased a 2nd hand PC back in June and unfortunately have experienced about a dozen BSODs when playing games.
They seem to occur randomly. There has been times where I have been able to play games for hours without BSOD at all.
I thought it was an issue with my graphics card drivers so I updated them to the latest version (I believe AMD 14.2) but the Blue screens continued to happen. I restored the drivers back to default and that is what I am currently using.

I often play League of Legends, but in the last two days my computer has given me a BSOD three times, with the error Driver IRQL not less or equal. Before every time this has happened it has told me to close League of Legends, because there is not enough RAM to support it. I know this isn't the case, because I have 8 gigabytes of RAM and I don't have many background processes (in the task manager it said I was using a total of 33 percent before the time of the crash.)
