View 1 RepliesI just purchased this Laptop yesterday, was installing programs and updates. The updates finished installing, asked me to restart the PC which I didn't do right away because I was installing programs. One of the programs asked me to reboot into safe mode so I did. When the PC rebooted, it said the updates were installed 100% but then says SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF "Updates failed...reverting changes". This loop as been going on for hours now.
I have had success in getting into the BIOS by pressing F12 upon startup. I tried changing the boot order to boot from my bootable startup repair DVD but it didn't work!
Okay, so this the worst I've ever been locked out of a computer. There's an account on the computer that's been linked to a Microsoft account, however the MS account password is lost and since all the forgot password options have been filled in with gibberish there's really no way to recover it.
Normally I'd say just reinstall the OS, but apparently we need access to this account.
There's no other user accounts whatsoever. Just one administrator account.
So, facts:
- It's linked to Microsoft.
- Microsoft account in inaccessible.
- Microsoft account cannot be recovered.
- There's no backups or anything.
- Computer account needs to be accessed unharmed.
Ultimately, I guess we need to actually hack into this account by force and I honestly don't know how to do something going that far because I've never been forced to go that far before. I'm going to guess it's going to involve booting from a pendrive or something.
I was just sitting here watching Netflix on my pc with the windows netflix app, and have done countless of times before when all of a sudden the PC restarts itself no error nothing, looked for logs in event viewer nothing but one saying the shutdown was unexpected, I looked for mini dump nothing but turns out my windows 8.1 setup for DMP files nothing there ether, What could have caused this know dump files created at all.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter putting my computer to hibernate and powering it back on, my disk usage would stay at 100%. All the transfer speeds are around 0.1 mb/s and I'm not sure what could be causing the 100% disk usage.
Another thing is that it windows notifies me to scan my hard drive for errors, which I have done, but this keeps repeatedly happening.
My desktop PC sleeps, sometimes, even though I believe I have set everything in Power Settings to prevent this.
I happens only 1 or twice a week and after about 15 minutes of no activity. Most of the time I could leave my PC on for several hours with no activity and it won't sleep.
I just attached my Micromax canvas smartphone to my windows 8 laptop to transfer some of my pics. I copied the pics and then looked for an appropriate folder in Documents to paste those pics. I found a folder named My Pics which already had some of my pics. I created a new folder inside it and then went back to my phone location. But to my surprise, when I came back there in My Pics I just found that folder empty!! (space 0 bytes)... What has just happened,I've lost my pics forever. I even tried System restore but in vain.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just brought a new pc with windows 8 core preinstalled as with all new pc's it has to do all its updates but for some reason on one of them it restarted and booted up in windows 8 pro with media center.I really do not want this and would like to return to windows 8 core without having to copy off all my files or purchasing a new copy of windows 8 as I have just spent a lot of money on this new pc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've encountered a sleep-related problem on my tower (desktop). Some time after a long idle (~12-16 hours), my machine just goes to sleep. I require this machine to be up 24/7, so I've tried many things; inevitably, my computer just decides to take a nap. I've even enabled wake-on-lan so I can wake it up remotely when I'm not nearby. Attached are my system specs/info, service culprits (non-microsoft), and attempted fixes.
systeminfo.txt is output from systeminfo
AidaReport.txt is a full summary of my machine
SleepEvents.txt contains the sleep event itself and the events that always seem to follow or precede it.
Running Non-Microsoft Services:
Adobe Acrobat/Flash Player update Services
AMD External Events Utility
Apple Mobile Device
Bonjour Serivce
Evolve Service (Evolve Gaming Client)
FileZilla Server FTP server
Fitbit Connect Service
iPod Service
Mozilla Maintenance Service
OpenVPN Service
Splashtop Remote Service
Splashtop Software Updater
Steam Client Service
VMware Authorization Service
VMware USB Arbitration Service
VMware Workstation Server
Things I've tried:
Disabled all sleep related settings, including hybrid sleep and fast startup. Power options are set to never sleep on all profiles (power plans). I've tried Caffeine (F15 every 59 seconds) and Insomnia (SetThreadExecutionState).
Originally, my computer was going to sleep with the reason Sleep Button pressed, and it looked like it was my keyboard (Razer DeathStalker), so I disabled the hardware sleep button, then the reason changed to Application API (with some delay between the 2 problems).
All windows updates have been applied, including the latest 8.1.1.
Right click context menu opening for no reason.... What is the reason?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI usually keep my game setups in rar formats and that saves me a lot of space over all and just recently (couple of weeks ago i think) i extracted an 8gig file within a few minutes without any problems but now i just tried to extract 4 files of 4,588,544 KB each and it says 3H:28 mins. This is a lot by any standards.
System specs as below, this problem shouldn't occur with a quad core i7.
Also the CPU usage for WinRar doesn't go above 15% for some reason no matter what i do. Tried setting priority to highest in task manager but still nothing.
Why do so many programs just stop working, stop responding for no apparent reason??? This includes IE9, e-mail service, new printer/scanner installation, etc, etc, etc. Sometimes even writing a letter or "Save as" just stops responding. How can this be??? Windows says "we're looking for a solution", but nothing ever shows up. Is there no diagnostic that can identify the failure? Is it memory, conflict, what can be causing these annoying interruptions??? Mostly rebooting the system will clear things up.
My setup: Windows 8 PRO, CPU Intel i7 3.40 GHz 64 bit, 16 GB RAM, INTEL SSDSC solid state hard drive 223 GB (about one quarter full). I did not have these problems with Windows 7, or the Windows 8 pre releases.
I have an issue with my Windows 8 PC, as it keeps crashing (Page Fault in non-paged area). Not everyday and not while doing anything special. I can play games without any issue - and then be editing a document and it shuts down.
I replaced my HD for a SD back in May but since then i havent made any changes to the setup.
I have attached the SFdebug files.
I have a desktop running windows 8, and lately the internet has been cutting on and off for no apparent reason. Wireless still works fine with no problems, it's only the ethernet that's giving me issues.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy friend put his Lenovo desktop to sleep, and when he woke it up, it was at one of the initial setup screens that you see when you first turn on a new computer, or first install Windows 8 - the screen that asks you to accept the Express Settings or to customize the setup.
We could not get out of it, and restarting the computer brought it right back there. So I accepted the Express Settings, then it asked me to enter the Microsoft account info, or to create one. He had a local account only, so I kept denying that screen and finally somehow I ended up at a screen that said something like "use my existing account" although it showed no indication that there was any account.
It then said it was installing my Apps (there are no Metro Apps in use on this computer, other than what comes with Win 8). This took about 3 or 4 minutes, then it did some more setup, and when it was done it was (surprisingly) back at his desktop screen, with all his files and desktop icons just like they were before.
After my PC has been shutdown for a while (5 hours?), when I turn it back on again I get a BSOD.
If it is turned off for a couple of hours then I don't, everything is fine.
It normally boots up ok to the windows login wall paper, as soon as I click to select a user to login as it crashes.
A reboot normally cures it and I'm and running.
The messages I've been getting include:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
Driver IRQL not less or equal
(I've attached my SF Diagnostics Dump File)....
I have an Acer Iconia W510 PC Tablet and I am talking about this error right here. [URL] ....
Okay, so this started appearing and I got a little worried. Each time it happens, I go through a restart and am just fine. So, I started to think about why it appeared. Then it happened more often. I'd say it pops up for no apparent reason every couple days, sometimes more frequent.
Every day, I do the following:
- Run Disk Cleanup
- Run Defrag
- Do a Manual Full System Scan with Norton Antivirus
I do all of these things and try to never download shady files, but it happens all the time. Sometimes it will be when I'm talking to someone on Skype (Text, not Video), or in an app like One Note or OK Cupid Touch.
It happens so frequently that I feel like there is something I'm missing.
Yesterday I was working on some stuff on my computer and left it when my door rang. When I came back the computer was on but no matter how many times I tried to move the mouse or press keyboard shortcuts Windows wouldn't come back on. So I manually powered down, and then it got worse. It wouldn't repair manually or from the Windows disk. I tried all kinds of stuff. I tried a refresh install but I got this
"The drive where Windows is installed is locked" Then this morning when I went back to back to turn it on and trouble shot. All I got was a black screen. No NVIDIA window or anything.
I have an Asus T300LA Transformer with Windows 8.1. My keyboard stopped working so wanted to use the recovery utility, but when I get there it says my hard drive is locked and to unlock it. How do I do that?
View 5 Replies View RelatedEvery time I use a FLAC file, I noticed on the delete, and rename in right click context menu, there is a UAC shield next to the text, initially thought nothing of it, but now I just go to delete the FLAC files, and it's refusing to let me, says I need Administration Permission, thing is...I am the admin!!
Same issue when I select rename, or drag to another folder. Is there anyways to stop Windows from locking these files? It's literally only FLAC files it does it with!
My Dell laptop, new this past Christmas and running Win 8, has entered into a repair mode:
"Repairing disk errors. This may take over an hour to complete"
I have a 1.5 yr. old ASUS notebook which has been upgraded from the initial Windows 8.0 to 8.1 and then to PRO several months ago. The PRO was done in an attempt to install the encryption technology, Bitlocker. Shortly after the install of Bitlocker, I found it would not work and traced it back to a discussion with ASUS who said this particular notebook was not built with the ability to be encrypted. (This is the second notebook/laptop in several months that I ran across this!) In any case, Bitlocker is not turned on anywhere, and unfortunately, I can't find any tool to remove it from my harddrive as of yet. I only mention this as a possible bearing on the issue since apparently it embeds itself in the root directory, if I am correct. This problem recently started for some unknown reason I can't contribute anything to.
My drive D: is an extension on the physical drive. When I try to manipulate and files or folders, it comes up with "the media is read only" or "the disk is write protected" all dependent on what I am trying to do and what application is open. It will, of course, allow me to copy files to C:. I have tried the following:
-CHKDSK which found nothing
-FILE CHECKER which found nothing
-PERMISSIONS checked and everyone and everything has full permissions
-DISKPART/ATTRIBUTES ran to check everything and according to the attributes on this volume, there is NO READONLY! I ran the CLEAN command 2X anyway which came up "successful" each time.
-I also ran some quality DISK MANAGEMENT software which could not make any modifications since it views the drive as "Read Only".
I keep getting this when trying refresh my Windows 8 rp
The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
Just purchased a new Inspiron Desktop from Dell and the Windows 8 setup was all going well...
1) set up computer account OK using existing hotmail account - accesses email Ok
2) reach stage of wanting to transfer user files from external hard disk
3) notice that top-level user directory and below on new machine are all read-only so figure I should turn that off
4) system starts changing attributes for hundreds(?) of files - I was only expecting a few directories to be affected so I cancel that process and set all back to read-only and load user files
5) BUT... accessing email from the start page now just hangs - sits there with the rotating circles - everything else functioning OK
6) ran out of time so figure I'll investigate later - turn off system
7) now try to login on startup and after accepting account password it just sits there. Occasionally the start screen (with blank icons) is flashed up very briefly.
8) Do some of the files under the user directory need to have write access? But how can I now gain access to them if I can't get into the machine?
I have windows 8.1 and am trying to do a refresh as I've had some problems. But I keep getting a message that says, "The drive where windows are installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I then did a scan using "SFC/SCANNOW" When it was finished it said that it found some corrupt files but could not fix some of them. So the question is: What is a locked drive and how do you unlock it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedAs I used to transfer for our customers Windows 7 from HDD to SSD, I used to pull the HDD out, take the SSD, make a transfer either with Acronis, Paragon or manually. Usually at home, one my own computer, simply by putting both HDDs in.
Today, I got a first Windows 8 computer to migrate. As soon as I connected the main HDD from the laptop to my computer, at boot, I got the blue screen. When I removed the HDD, my system booted OK.
What is that??? I never ever saw Windows crashing just because I put a HDD in it. I left the laptop in the company, so I wasn't able to put it back (going to do it tomorrow), but I already did the first Windows 8 setup - it's an Asus laptop.
Weird thing is, that even when connecting via USB (I have a SATA/USB3 dongle which I can use for such purposes), it first recognizes the disk, then it shows the 2nd partition (DATA), and then it also goes into blue screen. What the hell is that? Is it some new Windows 8 protection or something?
Trouble is, Paragon migration software I bought previously doesn't support Windows 8, so I would have to buy a new one...
My son's laptop suddenly had all keyboard functions totally locked last night.
He was wondering whether he entered some sort of control sequence, accidentally, for this to happen.
He has managed to recover by going back to a restore checkpoint for earlier this week.
In case this happens again, is there any Windows control sequence he could have used to resolve this?
is there a way to have programs running when I lock my Surface Pro, and if so how would I do it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who has been hijacked through phone and being gullible. The PC was totally locked out and my password cracker failed to make headway. She has agreed to re-install, but her supplier did not give her a product key with her system disk and paperwork, consequentially, disk cannot proceed.
Is there a way for me to install with her disk with a temp product key? Also, if we re-install this way, would she be charged for not having it through no fault of her own?
I am getting quite used to the start screen on Windows 8 (as opposed to a start menu (?) - this change in nomenclature is sure to confuse users...)
I followed the tip on organizing into groups - quite useful.
However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.
Any way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already.
Noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...
I have done a re-install of Windows 8 due to stabilty and speed issues.
It is a DUAL boot with Ubuntu 13.04, but this is not the problem.
The DESKTOP (I use Classic Shell) to get to the Desktop not the START screen. This worked well with my previous install.
However, I can't put ANYTHING on the blank Desktop - the folder Desktop has TONS of stuff in it.
Checked Permissions. Tried to Create a new folder or shortcut - it SAYS it's OK, and puts the New Folder in the Desktop folder, but it does NOT appear on my Desktop.
The Background works and I can get the Next Background by right clicking and selectin Next Desktop Background.
The START screen Icon of Desktop is also blank, except for my Background.
