Setup Installation :: Migration From HDD To SSD - Locked Disk?

Jan 30, 2013

As I used to transfer for our customers Windows 7 from HDD to SSD, I used to pull the HDD out, take the SSD, make a transfer either with Acronis, Paragon or manually. Usually at home, one my own computer, simply by putting both HDDs in.

Today, I got a first Windows 8 computer to migrate. As soon as I connected the main HDD from the laptop to my computer, at boot, I got the blue screen. When I removed the HDD, my system booted OK.

What is that??? I never ever saw Windows crashing just because I put a HDD in it. I left the laptop in the company, so I wasn't able to put it back (going to do it tomorrow), but I already did the first Windows 8 setup - it's an Asus laptop.

Weird thing is, that even when connecting via USB (I have a SATA/USB3 dongle which I can use for such purposes), it first recognizes the disk, then it shows the 2nd partition (DATA), and then it also goes into blue screen. What the hell is that? Is it some new Windows 8 protection or something?

Trouble is, Paragon migration software I bought previously doesn't support Windows 8, so I would have to buy a new one...

Setup Installation :: Win 8.1 (upgrade) Migration To SSD

Jun 10, 2014

I am currently using asus a42ja as my main laptop, and installed EOM version of windows 7 on it. Then i got an upgrade (from Microsoft store) to windows 8, a couple of months ago I upgraded to windows 8.1. Long story short, i got an SSD , and i wanted to clean install windows 8.1 on it.

1. the windows update advisor for windows 8.1 wont receive the product key that i currently have (win 8 upgrade) does that mean i cant do clean installation?? or should i install win 8 and do upgrade manually (which is a pain)??

2. lets say i will do clean intall win 8 on the ssd, will my upgrade key works? will i encounter a problem with the activation process?

3. other option is to reset my win 8.1 and clone the fresh copy to the ssd , but i never done this before , only refresh, and if im resetting my computer, do i need to re activate the windows? (and will my product key works?)

4. the last and least preferred option : do windows refresh and clone the system drive to ssd.

is there some utility to backup the windows activation?all i wanted to do is do a clean install of windows 8.1 (and activate it) on the new drive.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Desktop Locked

Aug 18, 2013

I have done a re-install of Windows 8 due to stabilty and speed issues.

It is a DUAL boot with Ubuntu 13.04, but this is not the problem.

The DESKTOP (I use Classic Shell) to get to the Desktop not the START screen. This worked well with my previous install.

However, I can't put ANYTHING on the blank Desktop - the folder Desktop has TONS of stuff in it.

Checked Permissions. Tried to Create a new folder or shortcut - it SAYS it's OK, and puts the New Folder in the Desktop folder, but it does NOT appear on my Desktop.

The Background works and I can get the Next Background by right clicking and selectin Next Desktop Background.

The START screen Icon of Desktop is also blank, except for my Background.

Setup Installation :: Clean Installation Win 8 Failure (No Disk Space)

Aug 18, 2014

I partitioned my hard disk into a 150GB (C) and 500GB (D) and upgraded from Win7 to Windows 8 (and subsequently Windows 8.1 after the recent updates). The OS is installed onto the C Drive.

Performed a Clean Installation of Windows 8 on my C Drive. Under the Choose What To Keep Option, I selected Nothing.

Technically speaking my C Drive would have been wiped clean but after the Windows 8 installation, my C Drive only has 5GB of space left (145GB is being used). The Windows 8 OS is not detecting any of the old programs in my C Drive and the automated Disk Clean up feature only offers removal of temporary internet files. Which brings me to one possible assumption...

The Clean Installation Failed. Windows 8 simply installed itself again on my C Drive and the remaining disk space (containing my previous Windows 8.1 OS and programs) is locked down somewhere. I suspect this had something to do with changing my HD format 3 years ago when I wiped clean my pre-loaded ASUS laptop Win7 and partitioned it to install my Windows 8.

How to remove my previous OS?

Setup Installation :: (Recovery) Partition In GPT Disk For UEFI Installation?

Jan 28, 2013

Is it possible not to have the partition "recovery"?

Because if you look at the two tutorials:

- UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums

- UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 8 with

In the tutorial to install Windows 7 in UEFI, there is not that damn partition recovery, while in the tutorial for Windows 8, we can see it.

When I install Windows 7 (MBR mode), I avoid this partition "recovery" by creating a partition with a name before installation. I install the OS on it and everything is fine, no partition "recovery" But here, since one must delete all partitions, If I create a GPT disk with a partitioning tool before installing, is that it might be appropriate?

Setup Installation :: Reinstalling 8.1 Preview In MBR Disk

Sep 29, 2013

When Win 8.1 Preview was first released it installed without issue in a second partition on my Win 7 Pro Lenovo Edge E335 and created a standard dual boot setup. A week ago something or other started causing chaos in Win 7 though 8.1 still ran normally, but as 7 is my day-to-day system I needed to get it working normally again. Three different Acronis images restored OK but then each developed the same problems, so probably a rootkit was behind it all. Unable to overcome these problems I restored to factory condition, reinstalled my software and life returned to normal.

I then set about repartitioning to install Win 8.1 Preview again but hit a first problem when the same DVD and key I had used previously failed as the key was not accepted. Undaunted I tried again with a new key I found on the internet and this key did work. However the install then failed with the message that Win 8.1 can not be installed to an MBR disk, only to a GPT disk. Now this is the same disk that installed to the same MBR HDD previously, only the key being different.

Is the only solution to this to convert the entire disk to GPT and reinstall both 7 and 8.1 again? If so, that's a bit of a problem as my Win 7 was preinstalled to an MBR disk and I'm certainly not buying it again.

The Win 8 Pro/Win 7 Ult on the left relates to a different box.

Quick question. I am trying to use Acronis disk imager. The second drive I am trying to use had been a primary drive, but it is not the current active partition. The "true" active drive is C...I am trying to reformat/delete everything off of that second drive so I can use Acronis and make the D drive my primary (since it's larger/faster) Disk management won't let me format D because it is showing active as well. I am not sure what to do here. It also wouldn't let me just delete the files manually. how to get around this?

Setup Installation :: Downgrade From 8.1 To 8 No Recovery Disk

Dec 14, 2013

Basically, I upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 a few weeks ago and since I could barely run any games, they have compatibility issues and all sorts.

I tried updating my drivers, it says they're all up to date I spent countless hours looking for solutions on how to downgrade All the solutions require me to have a disk, but I lost it I also looked up on how to set it back to it's factory setting, but it doesn't work

I was told to press F8 or F9 (can't remember at them moment) as soon as the computer turns on until the recovery screen pops up, but it never does.

I'm using an Alienware x51. Is it even possible to reset my computer without the disk? if not, then where can i get another disk that came with the computer?

Setup Installation :: Recovering From Disk Failure?

Feb 28, 2013

Woke up this morning to a frozen Windows 8 screen. Only way out was to power off. On reboot, my nightmare began.

No boot device. Long story short, I went through many attempts at a reset, repair, reinstalls, off the Windows 8 DVD, all to no avail. Indeed, when I booted into Dell diagnostics, it confirmed a failed hard drive.

(Sidebar : was there an automated patch pushed last night.....like there was for Win 7?).

Keeping calm, I know I have all my data backed, up, but I am trying to avoid having to rebuild everything from scratch. I have been vigilant in doing image and file backups for years..... But I always manage to hit a brick wall somewhere along the way.

I have summarized what I have and do not have available to me here : Recovering from disk failure

Setup Installation :: Will The Disk Burnt With Win 8 ISO Install Full OS?

Feb 6, 2013

On January 31st, I bought a product key for Win 8 Pro paying $40. I downloaded the Windows.iso that came with the purchase. Afterwards, I burnt the Windows.iso to two separate DVD Roms, opening the ISO with Windows Disk Image Burner.

When one of the two DVD Roms is opened, the program setup.exe presents itself, together with about 9 folders and files. (Please see the attachment, showing the contents of the DVD Rom.)

Setup.exe is obviously the trigger for installing Win 8.

My question is: Will this trigger (setup.exe) install the full Win 8 operating system, using what is stored on the DVD Rom, plus perhaps elements downloaded from the internet during the installation process? Or must I have installation elements on my hard drive, downloaded during the purchase, in addition to the DVD Rom?

In other words, is the DVD Rom burnt from the ISO the "full" Windows 8, the only thing I need apart from my product key, to install Win 8?

Setup Installation :: Installing Windows 8 On A New Disk Boot

Aug 14, 2014

Before, my PC was setup like this:

- disk0: windows xp
- disk1: windows 7
Bios boot priority set to disk1.

So no boot loaders, when I (rarely) need xp, I would switch via bios

Now I wanted to try Windows 8, so I've

- download 'Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation' and burnt on a dvd

- bought and connected a new disk (disk2)

- boot from dvd, installed choosing the new disk2

Now, everything works fine, Windows 8 got installed on disk2. But the strange thing is this:

- if, from bios, I choose disk2, it says the disk is not bootable

- choosing disk1, a boot loader shows up, letting me choose between win7 and Windows 8.1

(- choosing disk0, nothing has changed, xp starts like before)

So, I'm confused. I was expecting Windows 8 booting from the new disk2.

- why disk2 doesn't boot?

- would have been better physically disconnecting disk0 and disk1 before installing?

Setup Installation :: UEFI USB Disk - Does Not Boot From Windows 8

Mar 13, 2013

Laptop: ASUS UX31A-DB71, latest BIOS: 218

Originally my laptop came with Windows 7 and when i looked at disk management my disks were formatted with UEFI schema. One of my friend gave me a UEFI bootable USB drive loaded with Windows 8. So, i thought why not give it a try. So, I created a backup of my OEM Windows 7 and saved the iso files in a seperate external HD (created twice just to be sure . Now, i decided to load the Windows 8. Booted into the BIOS and there is an option to select the USB drive along with the UEFI option for that USB drive. I selected the UEFI option but some reason it does not boot into UEFI.

So I decided to select the standard USB install and this option let me install windows 8. In the process of installing i formatted the partitions and made a single partition and installed Windows 8 on it. I am guessing now the drive is not GPT but MBR. I also noticed that his installation USB disk had an option to select either 32bit or 64bit of Windows 8... Would Microsoft create a same iso file with both versions? I am guessing he created the USB from a illegitimate source.

I am planning on purchasing Windows 8 Pro version as an iso but wanted to be confident that it would work with UEFI architecture.

Questions:
1. Why would the system NOT boot from UEFI?
2. If I download the legitimate iso from Microsoft and wanted to install Window8 Pro via UEFI, I am sure i would have to format my SSD to GPT and how would i go about formatting it during installation?
3. How would i create a recoverable USB for my iso image i created for Windows 7 via ASUS AI Recovery. Do I need to follow the same procedure as stated in creating bootable USB disk (i.e. FAT32 system) via diskpart utility?

Setup Installation :: Can't Find Option To Burn ISO Disk

Nov 8, 2012

I have a 32-bit version of XP on my system, so when I do an upgrade within the XP OS. It automatically upgrades me to the 32-bit Windows 8. The actual installation went fine, without a hitch actually.

I have a 64-bit version of Vista that I may go ahead and do a clean install of first, just so I can upgrade to the 64-bit of Windows 8. But when I was going through the upgrade program, I never saw the option to create the ISO DVD or Flash drive. The only options were, "Install now, or install from desktop later". I chose "install from Desktop later" and found that all it did was suspend the installation until I clicked the desktop icon, which then just loaded the upgrade without giving me the option to create the DVD or Flash disk. Is there somewhere I can download the ISO so that I can create a disk?

Setup Installation :: Updating From Vista To 8.1 Without Install Disk

Sep 15, 2014

Is this possible? I have a code and I've just been researching/trying to work out how to do this for the past few days with no real success. As far as I'm aware I could make my own bootable USB/disk but the windows 8.1 updater doesn't work on Vista. I thought I could maybe make the USB with my brother's PC which runs 8.1 but the program asks for the code and I'm not sure whether that would lock that code to his PC or not.

Failing that I thought I could maybe download the iso (I think that's what it's called) and make the USB without the official windows 8.1 program though I'm not sure of that either.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Cannot Be Installed To Disk 0 Partition 1

Nov 8, 2013

I am trying to do a clean install of windows 8 on my laptop (Elitebook 8770W) from a USB stick with original MS Windows OEM iso. Once I boot from usb stick, at the setup screen I enter the product key and then choose advanced to do a clean install. I then choose my hard disk partition to install windows but I get stuck here with this error:

"Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1"

I deleted the partition and choose to install on the unallocated space (150GIG) But still get the same error and when I click on the error this is what I get:

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's Bios"

In bios I have my disk set as Raid and I also have a m-sata Flash cache. If I change raid to AHCI I will be able then to install windows. But if I turn it back to raid after install I will no longer be able to boot I have to be in raid mode to use my m-sat as cache drive.

So here I am stuck not being able to install windows I even downloaded latest intel rapid storage technology drivers and put them on the usb stick with windows setup files. When i got the error I choose to load driver. But even after that I was getting same error and windows would not install on my HDD.

What's the right way to install in this condition (raid)?
