I can't move files from one destination to another.
For example:
I have a few files in a folder called New Folder in my documents, I try to drag them out my that folder and directly into my documents so I can remove the folder. But when I drag them into my document it transfers them all but then if I refresh the window it just reverts to its previous location? It does the same when I move from the desktop to any folder.
as I have put up with it for weeks now and I'm sick of it. My desktop is too cluttered because I am unable to move files. However If i place everything into a folder on my desktop and then drag the folder to my documents that works but then I can't move them out my folder into my documents, my pictures, my music etc.
I have Windows 8 Operating System 64 Bit. I've removed any recent programs I've installed before getting this error.
I have just installed Win 8 Pro to a new SSD and have read that frequent rewritten files and folders should be moved to the HDD, Which ones are they referring to and how would I do this? When they say that frequently used applications should go on the SSD what are some examples? What about games?
I have some files and shortcuts on my desktop, and I am trying to move them into my documents. When I refresh my documents they just disappear and they do not reappear in documents or the desktop. Only when I restart or log out do they reappear on the desktop. Whats causing this?
This has happened a few times to me. I work a lot with professional Audio Production and I just tried to move some files that were created last year on the same PC (using windows 7 64-bit at the time) from one folder to another on the same partition. I used the 'take ownership' context item and even added my user name (only user on my PC) with all permissions. But I still couldn't move them (not one application or folder open that was using the files inside).
In the end I had to copy/paste and delete the originals afterwards. They deleted fine, but wouldn't allow moving. How to avoid this in future, so that I can just move the files?
It's happened to a few (seemingly) random folders since I've started using windows 8 64-bit, amongst hundreds I have in the parent folder from the same dates +/-.
I want to automate one process that I do from time to time. I have many folders, sometimes like 90 folders and I want to move them all into a single folder, the filenames are the same so they overwrite. I can overwrite them, in fact, I should, I just want to move all files from many folders into one folder, not doing it manually. Is there a command in CMD that can do that? E.g I have FolderSubfolder 1... Subfolder 90 so in 1 folder I have the subfolders then I have RootFolder where I want all to be and overwritten, MOVED not copied
I have windows 8.1 and c-drive is system drive. Programs are mainly installed to C: but I have also some programs installed to E: Program Files, Program Files (68), Program Data etc . Now I want to to move E-drive contents to another hard drive (all files stored on e-drive).
I think the safest way is to reinstall all programs, but I don't want to do this. Also it is possible to move files to new partition which has another drive letter than e: and create link, but this I don't want to do either.
Can I do it like this:
1) Change e-drive letter to x 2) Create new e-drive to another hard drive 3) Copy e-drive contents to new e-dive 4) that is it?
Can I use normal copy - paste to copy all files? I think register references are the same after these steps because drive letter and content of the e-drive are still the same.
Does my method work? It sound so easy to do. Is it "too easy"? Does it have any risks?
Never had this problem before I have two files in an otherwise empty folder but there are no extensions after the file name. I can't add an extension to the files. I can't rename them or move them or delete them. Every time i try any of these things i am being told that: "the element wasn't found. It is no longer located in (insert name here) control the elements place and try again"
What that means. I even tried to delete them from the cmd...
How to move Outlook 2013 PST and OST files to a different location on Windows 8.1? I have tried a number of the publicized methods but with no success.
I want to move files from my old Desktop (Windows 2000 Server) to my new Laptop (Windows 8.1 Pro).
I have a Router, an Ethernet Cable and a Crossover Cable.
Note: The Router (older Netgear) always shows up as "Unidentified network". However, I can successfully share the Laptop's Internet Connection to it via the Ethernet port. It is joined to the HomeGroup and is a Private network.
The Router's IP Address is 192.168.1.1 which I can connect to using the Smartphone over Wi-Fi.
I'm into photography and when I take pictures and put them on my computer they usually have the same name as several other pictures I've taken. In Windows 7 when I would transfer files from my memory card to my computer it would give me the option to 1) Skip saving the duplicate files, 2) save over them, and 3) keep both files and then it would rename the new file with a number after it (such as DCIM 102 and DCIM 102 (2))
In Windows 8 it seems like I only have the options to 1) skip saving the duplicate and 2) save over the duplicate....since I want to keep both files, what do I do?
Most of my pictures aren't really themed or anything, so there's not really a need for keywords, like "Birthday blah blah" or "flowers yada yada" etc. Anything similar to the "save both files"...?
I move a lot of files around on my computer between different files and between hard drives for organization purposes (running Win8) and about 1/3 of them lately will display this error when I attempt to drag and drop from one folder to another "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program" but these files are NOT opened or being used by another program...it's completely random and if I try again after about 15 minutes or so then I will magically be able to drag/drop the files...
I have a directory that contains about a hundred batch files, each which starts up a ssh terminal connected to a different server. When I run one, I get the "SmartScreen" message saying that Windows is preventing an unrecognized app from starting. I can click "more info" to run it anyway, and from then on it'll run as it should. I'm hoping there's a way to select all the files at once and disable SmartScreen for them.
I know I can disable SmartScreen altogether, but it seems like it could be preferable to leave it on, as it might be protecting my system from malware and what not. I guess if that's the only way to easily get all apps I want to use to not be blocked, that's what I'll have to do.
I am looking for extracting compressed files with windows 8.
whenever I download a file that has multiple compressed files (i.e. r01, r02 etc), they seem like they are not being recognised as a 'package'. If I choose to open one file win zip it doesn't then recognize the rest of the files as winzip files and I can't extract the compressed file.
Using Windows 8.1 on HP machine All updates up-to-date Hardware: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 Explorer Folder Option selected: Single-click to open an item (point to select); Underline icon titles only when I point on them Display: Detail list (Ctrl + Shift + 6) No touch input
Here's the problem: For as long as I have used windows, I can select multiple files by pressing ctrl-left mouse button. If I want to select multiple consecutive files, I move my cursor down to the last file in the list and press shift-left mouse button. If I want to select multiple files that are not listed consecutively, I move my cursor along the list of files and press ctrl-left mouse button to select each individual file.
This does not work for me any longer and I do not know why.
I do not have Click-lock on.
Often I will press ctrl-left mouse click and the file will not select. When I move my mouse away from the file I've selected, it will UN-select. If I continue to press the CTRL key while attempting to select another file and float my mouse cursor down the list of files to select ONE single file further in the list, ALL the files in between the first file I click and the final file will become selected.
Moving the mouse cursor carefully and steadily to select individual files yields varied results; sometimes I can select individual files; sometimes, I can click multiple times to select an additional file and the file will not become selected. More often than not, I will select several files and earlier files will become unselected.
I have been a Windows user since version 3.1 and this has never happened to me. I have been a Windows 8.1 user for over a year now and this is a new wrinkle. I have done system restore multiple times and it has not solved the problem. I have uninstalled Intellipoint/Microsoft Keyboard & Mouse center and reinstalled and the problem has not solved. I have checked every setting for my mouse in the mouse center and cannot see a setting that imposes this feature.
Changing folder options to Double-click to open an item (single click to select) solves the problem. I am able to navigate and organize my files the way I always have. Only happens when single-click feature is enabled. Please note: I have been using the single-click select feature since Windows XP.
I am attempting to write a batch script that uses a program called Mailsend to send an email. The script then examines Mailsend's log output to determine if the email was successfully sent.
-The first line sends the email. - The second and third use a program called Tail to delete all lines except the last one from the log file (the last line contains the output I'm looking for). -The next 2 lines then assign the contents of the log file to a variable then truncate the first 26 characters (date and time info that I don't need). -The next line creates a second variable that contains the desired output (i.e. "Mail sent successfully") -The next two lines echos the contents of the variables. -And finally, the last line compares the two variable and takes a particular action depending on whether the two variables are equal or not.
The comparison at the end is where I'm having problems. Every time I run the script, the last line I get printed on the screen is "Wrong" (i.e. the "Echo Wrong" command is executed meaning "Message" does not equal "Cmess"). This happens even when the email was sent successfully. I've tried various things and I haven't managed to get the "Echo Correct" command to ever execute, even when the output of the two Echo commands just before is exactly the same. I've even tried changing the "Set Cmess" line to:
Code: Set /p Cmess=<temp2.txt Set Cmess=%Cmess:~26%
And the output for the comparison is still "wrong". I can only think that there must be something wrong with how I structured the comparison.
How to get this script to work or script means of checking the log file for "Mail sent successfully"? This is what the log file contains if an email gets sent successfully:
Code: 07-Jun-2014 08:17:28.172: mailsend v@(#) mailsend v1.17b1407-Jun-2014 08:17:33.011: Mail sent successfully
I accidentally set the file open of .bat files to Notepad. From a link in this forum (How to Restore Default File Extension Type Associations in Windows 8 and 8.1)was able to reset the registry back I think. The bat file not longer asks for notepad but instead opens "How do you want to open this file" and ask me to look for an app. The batch files still do not run.
I'm trying to create a NETSH batch file that sets my TCP/IP settings to DHCP.
The line I want to use is:
netsh interface ipv4 set address name="My Custom Named Network" dhcp
If I run the global cmd prompt and paste this line, it works as intended. However, if I create a batch file with the same line, I get "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect".This is bugging me plenty.
I was browsing around and attempting to build a program with MS-DOS. I can't get the choice command to work in Windows 8, and I have browsed the internet searching for the problem and a solution. It seems that Microsoft has removed Choice from Windows 8 supported commands. Is there any way possible I can make this work? I also own a Windows XP desktop and I can make the codes on it, but I can't get them to run on Windows 8?
- Changed name to Connec8 - Compiled as exe. This is for the sole purpose to force Administrator privileges on double click - New icon - Administrator privilege check on startup. - Added option to restart the previous hotspot - Implemented an easier way to enable Internet sharing - Added blank lines for better readability

Windows 8 is awesome. However it doesn't have the ability to create ad-hoc networks from Network and sharing center. The only way is to use netsh utility from CMD every time you want to start or stop your network. .
So I created a batch file to automate this process. All you have to do is to start it as administrator, follow the instructions and voila!. No need to open cmd again and again
This utility creates an adhoc network. You can use it for streaming Videos and Music or playing LAN games.
For Internet sharing aka Hotspot Go to Network and Sharing Center –> Change adapter settings Right click on the device which is connected to internet and select Proerties Now, open Sharing tab, enable Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection, and then choose the newly created ad-hoc connection from the list
Since Windows 8 is not creating System Restore points, apparently because I have a dual boot Windows 8 / Windows 7 setup, I'd like to schedule one every 3-4 days or so.
Is there any way to run system restore from Command line or batch file or Powershell? If so then I could schedule it to run when I want.
I built a computer recently. Since day one I get BSODs but the drivers, and Bug/Checks listed are never the same.I was thinking it couldn't be a single device or driver so I've:
Replaced the MOBO. Repair Installed the OS. Replaced the RAM.
It BSOD'd multiple times between each change.
The only things I've run are IE/FF and Ableton Live 9. Ableton is usually running during the BSOD but it was not the last time.
I am currently running win 8 with a pool of drives configured in storage space about 10TB. I want to build a new computer with Win 8 and move the current drives to the new computer without losing the data is the possible?
I have a friend that has a new laptop and is used to win 7 but the computer has windows 8 on it. She wants the Mail app to show on the desktop. Is there a way to create an icon on the desktop that will point to the mail application?
When I go into Properties/Location of the Public Videos folder it says I can "change where the files are stored in this folder" however I cannot type a new location into the dialogue box. I am in signed in as administrator.
I need to transfer my torrents from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 8 computer. On the first computer the folder containing the Bit Torrent application data is located at C:Documents and SettingsOwnerApplication Data. Where on the Windows 8 computer do I put this folder? I think I'm supposed to put it in the same place but I can not find the right path. I installed Bit Torrent on the Windows 8 computer and it puts data in C:UsersMyNameAppDataRoamingBitTorrent. Should I place the contents of the first BitTorrent folder in this place?
