I have a computer running windows 7 now that has 5 drives (3x2TB and 2X3TB) that act as my home media storage center. I have TV shows split between 3 drives and movies on 2 drives. When I access these from other applications, it can be hard to group everything together and if I run out of space somewhere, it is a nightmare.
Win 8 pro x64 is on it's way, but wanted to know how to set up Storage Space. I have looked through the tutorials, but cannot figure out how to set my system up, if I have media in different spots.
Do I create 1 Storage Space and all 5 drives are in it then I just have to point to if from my other applications to get to the data? Do I create a storage space for each type of media (music, TV shows, Movies, etc.)? When I add a drive to a storage space, how do I get it to include the files within the storage space and not just use the "empty" drive space?
I am not looking for redundency protection, but to make my handling of data across all the drives easier (e.g. "Did I put my Futurama series on drive 1 or 2...Did South Park make it on to one drive or did I have to split it up?)

I installed Windows 8 Pro on a GPT partition. I have 234GB of SSD with 87% free space according to Disk Management. I am trying to create a 4GB primary partition for Intel Rapid Start but the Disk Part shows i have no space available in that drive and would not let me create the partition. Why would that be?

I have two portae hard drives which I keep my music on. Each drive is a copy of the other. I was afraid of losing my back up so I made a back up of my back up. Lol.
With storage pools, can I just have one copy of my music but hook up the two hard drives to the pc and use this "pools" thing?

I've been using storage space for around a year with pool and raid functionality and I just realized the numbers don't add up... I have 7x 2TB all parts of a single pool with parity. Now here's the numbers:
Physical space: 14tb
Storage Space size (user set): 12tb
Used Storage Space size (according to windows explorer): ~6tb
Used Storage Space size (according to storage spaces): ~9tb
Individual drive used % (according to storage spaces): ~75% each
Storage spaces tells me to add a drive, low capacity... So I know how normal RAID5 works and it really shouldn't use 50% of the total used space as shown by the numbers above (6tb + 3tb assumed to be parity = 9tb). Also, if I need to add another drive, this means I'm almost full at 6tb/14tb?! This is worst than MIRROR RAID...

I am setting up a new home PCServer and decided to use Win 8.1 since I needed to upgrade to at least Win 7 Professional to use Disk Mirroring. Now I find out Win 8.1 has Disk Mirroring (From Disk Management Console) and Storage Spaces.
My question is which one is better and faster. I just want to mirror two drives (RAID 1) to store my pictures so if one drive fails I have a copy. I'm not interested in expanding this or adding drives that Storage Spaces seems to support.

I seen a hack for this in the registry before, but I cannot find it now!
Every game that I open up spends about 20 seconds at the loading screens, I guess that's retrieving save data in the cloud. It's a waste of time and I don't need solitaire saves stored in the cloud for other PCs. Starting these games in W7 is rocket fast instead.
I did Google this and checked the FAQs here: [URL] .....

I setup a parity storage pool with 2x500GB drives and x1 1TB drive then started transferring data, i noticed that they were getting full so added a 4TB drive and carried on transferring data however the x500GB drives are full and it will not let me transfer anymore data(currently about 2TB) the 4TB drive only says 18% full. Is there a configuration or command to move the data around the disks so they are all the same percentage eg 60% full? I have since tried moving data off the pool then transferring it back but I'm not sure its making any difference to the way the data is stored.
I have x1-500gb x2-1tb x3-2TB and x2-4TB drives with about 12TB of data i would like to store. Am i better off having multiple Pools with matching drives ?

Windows 8: I have 4 drives assigned to a raid1 and a raid0 storage space. A power plug broke off of one of the drives. I ordered an exact replacement hdd pcb for that drive. It spins up, bios sees it, I'm 100% sure no damage was done to the data as the drive was off when the power plug was broken. windows sees it but storage spaces thinks it is a new drive. So spaces is still showing the raid0 offline and raid1 in lowered resiliency mode. I am assuming something on the logic board, maybe hdd serial# or guid or something is now different for the repaired drive.
In powershell if there is a way to tell storage spaces that the repaired drive is in fact the one that it thinks is offline?
Here is a powershell Get-PhysicalDisk:

I've connected a MyBook 256GB external storage drive to my newly built computer. Half of my pictures are all rotated to the right. How did this happen? The pictures weren't taken in the way they appear right now. There has to be a better way of fixing this than to select the ones which are rotated and rotate them back to the original position.

My new Toshiba laptop runs Windows 8, boots in UEFI mode and GPT formatted, can I create a logical partition solely for storage so that when I format/recover windows partition like windows system image restore, the files and folders stored in the partition is not affected?Just like I did in my old windows 7 laptop that boots in BIOS mode and MBR formatted, which I put the partition as D: drive? Are there any possibilities I do that without messing up the system?

I actually have 2 problems. One with the Windows tiles, and the other one with Explorer/Libraries.
- First of all, I start with the small problem. I booted my PC today, and to my surprise, my Windows tiles were gone. Only the Store, Onedrive, Explorer and the Desktop are there. The rest? Gone. Very weird, never had this before.
So that is question 1: How to restore the Windows tiles. It's weird they disappeared, I did nothing with the configuration or something else.
- Second, and this is the main thing.
I have a serious issue with the Explorer/Libraries. My PC has 3 HDD's and 1 SSD. The SSD is, obviously, the Windows drive. Nothing special. The other 3 are for mass storage.
Stock, Windows sets all on the C drive. Like user stuff, install paths, you know. Also the libraries, like Pictures, Videos, Documents and Music. This is the part where it goes wrong.
I don't wanna have all my Music, Pics and the rest on my C drive. Only my Windows installation... So, I put my libraries into the D drive. I made a My documents folder on the empty D drive, and changed the direction path of the libraries on the left to the new My documents map. This goes good, except for the Music map.
The Music map thinks he is Desktop. I've tried to tell him, he's not, but the folder isn't listening. Without jokes, this is a really weird thing.
I tried to re position, but the Desktop and Music folder are thinking they are each other. I don't know how to solve this. The other folders do work, no problem with those. Except for these two.
Bad thing is also, I thought, if I delete the map, and create a new one, maybe that'll work. Not. Instead, Windows decided to delete both maps, Desktop and Music, so now, my icons, and music is gone. It's really weird, as I said, it's happening only with these maps.
Any solution or trick for this? Maybe,I could try and get the whole 'Users' map, from the C drive to D, so it makes one whole?

When adding an initial drive to a storage pool I get the error "incorrect function"
System: Proliant ML110 G4, Windows 8 64-Bit, 4GB Ram
I have a 160GB drive installed on the motherboard's controller which hosts the OS. I've installed a single 2TB drive on a 2 Port PCI Express Internal SATA II Controller Card (JMB36x). As soon as I create a pool using the 2TB drive I get the error "Incorrect Function" and the drive becomes RAW.
The drive id's are unique. It's worth pointing out that the system without the new controller can only support 2TB max of SATA drives, but this is bypassed by the controller card I added?

I'm also worried that the 2TB drive is showing up as RAID not SATA on the controller.

I've just been migrating data to my new Storage Space on Windows 8. I had to do this in stages because I had a limited number of disks available to me. I had 2x 2TB disks in a nas box, and wanted to move them to a new server, and also added 2 more 2TB disks. Due to the nas being quite full, I started with a 4-disk pool consisting of 2x 2TB and 2x 500GB disks, and made a parity space.
My process was as follows:
Create parity space with the 2x 2TB and 2x 500GB disks
Copy all data from one of the disks in the nas to the space.
Remove 1x 500GB disk
Allow the space to repair
Add 1x 2TB disk from the nas into the pool
Copy the contents of the other nas disk to the space
Remove the 500GB and add the 2TB
Allow space to repair
The space is thinly provisioned at 4.85 TB which is what the GUI defaults to when I create a new parity space using all 4 disks. (I don't actually create the additional storage space). This is also what I calculated it to be (1.81*4*2/3).
Now the end result is very uneven disk usage and a low capacity warning, despite having what I think is about 57% total utilisation!
Here is a link to a screenshot of the space's setup:
[URL]
1) why it thinks there is low capacity?
2) How can I rebalance/redistribute the data evenly over the 4 disks?

I recently switched from OE to WLM because I purchased a new laptop (Win 8.1). I incorrectly assumed, since OE is about 8 years old, WLM would be far more advanced in every aspect.
A huge annoyance is: whenever I need to find a folder in Storage Folders, instead of keying the first letter of the folder I seek, as with OE, I must scroll down to find it. To make matters worse; all of the Storage Folders are expanded to reveal the sub folders by default. So, as I scroll down, each time, I must manually collapse each expanded folder.
Any way to cause WLM Storage Folders to behave like OE.

I'm trying to map my box.com cloud storage using "Map Network Drive".
I found the "Map Network Drive" button at the top of my folder. I click on "Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures". I follow through "Choose a custom network location"
At "Internet or network address" I type the url where I would log into box through the internet: [URL] .....
At next I get the login prompt, so I login, clicking "Remember my credentials" , when it returns, indicating that my login is incorrect the number of letters in my password has doubled, so of course my password is incorrect if the "network drive" is adding a bunch of extra characters.
So I go back and click on "connect using different credentials" and get the same result ....

I am using Windows 8 x64. I have a few software applications and one or two IDE's installed in drive C(system drive where my Windows is installed). Now my C partition is of 68 GB now suddenly I am seeing that almost all the space in drive C has ben used up and I am only left with ~6 GB of free space. Now when I am in drive C and select all the files and folders and check what is the space that it all takes up, the size returned is only 43.3 GB(check the attachment sc_shot1). But when I view C drive from MyComputer I only get ~6GB of free space shown to me(check the attachment sc_shot2). So if all the files and folders in C only take up 43.3 GB where is the rest of the 68.3 - 43.3 =25 GB. Am I being attacked by a virus or worm ?? I am using a licensed copy of QuickHeal Internet Security 2013 and I have scanned drive C with it, it reports no infections. I have also tried using the "cleanmgr" utility and clear up some space by deleting temporary files, but that at max gives me back ~1GB of free space.

I just installed a pretty clean install of Windows 8 Pro (I used the upgrade, but I did the upgrade immediately over top of a clean windows 7 install). It is installed on an intel SSD. I haven't installed any applications or added any documents, or files. However, when I go to file explorer and right click on my drive it shows that I've used 69GB of space on the SSD! That's after doing disk cleanup and removing the previous windows files and temporary upgrade files. I couldn't believe Windows was taking up 69GB, so I investigated further. If I select the drive in file explorer and then select every folder displayed, and then right click and select properties, then it only comes up as about 13GB. Is there a known problem with Windows 8 computing space useage on SSD drives?

I have a 200 gig partition on 1 drive that I have dedicated for games. But now it is filled, and even after shrinking my C drive to make space, I find that I still cannot extend my games partition. I've done a little reading and it appears that the issue is due to the free space not being directly beside the Games partition. I'm not sure, exactly, all I know is, I want to install more games and this technicality is preventing it.
Another thing that makes the situation more complex is that I have 2 other partitions on my drive that belong to Linux Mint. One is the main Mint partition, the other is a swap partition (similar to the page/swap file in Windows). I'm hesitant to try to mess around with moving those partitions since I'm not very experienced with Linux and if it doesnt boot I know I'll just reinstall it instead of trying to fix it. But I would like to avoid that in the first place.
I have tried with Disk Management, EaseUS, Paragon, Partition Wizard and GParted in Linux but they all wont let me make the games partition bigger, only smaller.
What I would like to do is to find a way to add free space to the Games partition, but without deleting other partitions or having to reinstall Linux. And more importantly, figuring out how to handle this kind of thing now so that I wont have issues extending partitions in the future. I also just figured I would say that I've converted the Games partition from primary to logical, due to the limitation of 4 primary partitions on a drive (maybe I'm wrong , but that's what I've heard). I say this because I recently had 4 primaries before trying to install Mint and Ubuntu, and neither of them would let me install. But as soon as I reduced to 3 primaries the issue went away and I was allowed to proceed. I figured that out after a bit of reading.
It is possible to move partitions on a disk so that they will be adjacent (either to the left or right) to another partition that needs to be extended?
I'm also posting a screenshot to make it easier for people to understand. The 36 gig partition is Linux's main partition, and the 15 gig partition to the right of it is Linux's swap partition. The pic also shows that both of those lie between the C drive and my games.
