I am using Windows 8, and Cyberlink's Power2Go 7 Deluxe puts a small dialog box "drag any file here to make a data disc" onto my Desktop. How can I get rid of this without uninstalling Power2Go? (The same thing happens with Power2Go 9 trial version.)

It's one thing that I really miss having (you can only see the Taskbar clock when working on Desktop Apps)
This is an absolute CLASSIC example of a TOTALLY BOVINE use of Metro - replacing the old accessories==>calculator by the Metro Calculator.
The wretched thing works Totally in Full screen -- what use is that to Man or Beast - especially if you have a Form or some text (not spread sheets) on your screen and you need to refer to them for your calculations.. What you need is a POPUP calculator that they had from the first versions of Windows 3 until Windows 7.
The calculator could also be useful as a popup on TOUCH screens too if you need it - but the stupid full screen thing -- totally useless.
I as actually quite surprised when I searched calculator and it operated like that. - Normally I use a nice calculator app on my mobile phone - but the battery is empty so I need the computer !!!. how to you take a screenshot of a small area on the screen.
I have Asus Z87 Deluxe, CPU Intel I7 4770k Quad Core, Hard Drive Western Digital 4TB SATA HDD, Monitor Asus 24 class LED, Video card Asus HD7790. Running windows 8.1 pro with media centre (x64) (build 9600) It boots into legacy mode. My BIOS is American Megatrends Inc. 1007. I know there is a later version, but I am a little paranoid to flash the Bios concerned I may Brick it.
I am experiencing random screen freezing and I am not sure why. I believe I have the latest drivers for all hardware.
I am at my wits end having had this problem for a month now. I am not to tech savvy to be honest. What I am thinking is my windows should have been installed in UEFI mode ( I am thinking this only because I am running out of things to try). Do I have to do a clean install to accomplish that and if doing so is that likely to solve my problem? Most of the freezes happen when I am working on the desktop with more than one program open (but not always) but quite often it involves playing a video.
I tried all means of opening the UAC slider menu (from Control Panel/User Accounts/change UAC settings, using cmd.exe, etc) but it never shows up. Verified file integrity, everything is fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedDesperate to avoid using the many quite difficult shutdown options in Windows 8, i tried an old trick i used to do on computers i wanted to shutdown from remote desktop. This Works like a charm i Windows 8 too..
1. Create a file using notepad called something like: Shutdown.js
2. Put this in the file: (new ActiveXObject("Shell.Application")).ShutdownWindows();
3. Save the file somewhere you like..
4. Now you can put shortcuts where you want them - and change icons to the nifty shutdown one in system32
This shortcut will bring up the shutdown dialog box, with all functions instead of just closing Windows directly.
Every morning at 5am, I receive the Open With dialog, and it doesn't tell me
a) what process is trying to open,
b) what type of file it's trying to open.
No matter what I try with, I receive an error saying "Cannot find C:Program" and sometimes has an extension if the app auto-applies (such as notepad, or MS Paint).
I've checked my logs, and even created a view of all logs within the last 24 hours, but I'm not seeing anything to identify anything.
At 5:01:19 for the past few days I see event ID 4624, immediately followed by 4634. Best I can tell by the log, and event IDs are windows is re-authenticating a mounted network drive.
I am having a problem where some documents that used to be on a drive appear in my Run menu dropdown/autocomplete in Windows 8.1 even though I never I never accessed them from the Run menu and the drive in question is no longer even mounted. I searched far and wide and tried many things, but none worked:
Clearing the two "Store x..." checkboxes in "Jump Lists" in the Taskbar and Navigation properties pane has no effect. It does clear my primary history, but the offending entries remain.RunMRU in the registry (generally offered as a tip for clearing/editing the history) does not contain these entries. Removing the whole RunMRU subtree acts more or less the same as #1.Oddly, when I type "X" or "X:" in the run box, but if I change it to "X:" (or enter any more of the relevant path, e.g., "X:document.txt") they no longer show up even though they theoretically match.I have searched the registry pretty thoroughly, including using third-party tools to search binary data.
I found one or two hits, but not all of the relevant data, in ".../ComDLg32/OpenSavePidMRU" and a "RecentDocs" area, but removing them had no effect. Note that some of these hits were plain text and others were binary with null values in between every letter.I've done searches of all the files under C:WINDOWS, with no hits.I have confirmed that the offending drive/directories are not set to index using the Windows Indexing Service, even when the drive is mounted. I have also reset the Windows Index, and they still appear when the index is empty.One of these directories appeared under "recent places" in Explorer. Removing it had no effect.Remounting and than unmounting the original drive has no effect, even though some of the files that appear in the Run dropdown no longer exist.

This "Save As..." dialog window is mainly used to located files to import to a program.

When I use Explorer on Windows 8.1 to copy multiple FLAC files to a folder on the SD card of my Nokia Lumia 625 (running on Windows Phone 8.1) via USB, a dialog window pops up in Explorer, asking me to choose between converting and just copying. If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?

People App Opens then Crashes to Desktop
I have a new Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 Core Edition. After only a week I found most of the apps would crash to the Desktop on opening. I thought I had solved the problem by creating a new user account and reinstalling the apps but that only worked for a week before the same problem reappeared.
This is what I have discovered to date:
Initially most apps crashed on openingReinstalling the apps made many of them work but there are still some issues e.g. selecting Maps within Bing weather causes the app to crashThe apps work fine in a new user account or in other local accounts I have not used much to dateNone of the steps recommended in Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8 solves the problemI've spent an hour with Microsoft Support who have found no obvious problem and have escalated the problem to the next tier
The problem appears to be due to access rights and priveliges in user accounts since the apps work in other accounts or if I create a new account.
Where the apps are located for each user account and whether there is way of checking that they are set up to have the correct access rights and privileges.
I open up my Live tiles screen on my 2nd monitor. When I open an app, say facebook. All is fine. When I drag from top of screen to bottom with my mouse to close the app, it goes to desktop. Is there a way for me to go back to the Live tiles screen?
Also, is it possible to have the live tiles screen visible all times on my 2nd monitor. I use Stardocks Start8.
I wanted to know if is it possible to switch between modern ui (as it is by default) and desktop apps, all in the same left pane in Windows 8.1?

Only some of my desktop apps are listed. Can I edit the list? Likewise, if I sort by name, the first group of apps includes only a subset of all my apps - can I edit that list?

I installed chrome and when i opened it up, it was blurry. I was able to read what's on the screen but it really irritated me.
After googling the problem, i found out that the problem was with the option of disabling the display scaling on high DPI settings from Compatibility in the properties of Chrome.
Doing that did clear the screen but the websites and text were too small.
What can i do to keep the big text but get rid of the blur?
All of a sudden, whenever I open an app on Windows 8 Start menu (click on a tile), the website and/or program opens the desktop. I lost the ability to view open apps by clicking on the top of the page. The web search toolbar on the bottom of the page has also disappeared. Did I change something I wasn't aware of?

When we access these one users text is too small to read but it can be enlarged each time it is accessed, the other users sc reen is too large and it cannot be made smaller. I want both users to have normal sized text and I want it to be fixed soi that it will not change.

I noticed today a strange entry in my startup list. I often check to see what is there just incase there is something I don't need starting up with the system and can disable.
Today I noticed an entry called "Start.vbs" in a folder called "EUESU" in my Users directory [C:Usersmyconputername ]. I saw this via CCleaner - Tools - Startup tab and under the published column it is BLANK.
I got my laptop repaired lately, the problem with it was that the screen was broken... before I put my laptop in for repair I had it connected to a external monitor so I could continue using my computer
As the title suggests on receiving my fixed computer, my laptop is running a lower resolution than supposed to. It is displaying 1366x 768 with the error message "Your resolution is lower than 1280 x 960. Some items might not fit on your screen" with no choice to increase said resolution.
This was the resolution I previously had while my laptop monitor was working... I assume this is to do with the external monitor I had it set up on but I no longer have that monitor.
Is there a way to somehow reset my graphics to recognize the correct resolution?

If I start a program (Photoshop, Firefox, for example) from the Start Screen the Desktop appears and the program loads on top of the Desktop, and when the program closes I am left with the Desktop not the Start Screen. Is this normal Windows 8 behaviour? (I have only just acquired Windows 8 and it is taking some time getting used to it!!) Is there a setting which will allow me to start a program from the Start Screen and return to the Start Screen when I close the program, ie allow me to bypass the Desktop (unless I choose deliberately to go to it)?
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I've encountered a problem whilst trying to clean up my HDD (it was filling up way too quickly and I wanted to get rid of some unwanted games/programs), and I noticed a problem with file sizes of even small programs.
For a start, I am a massive FSX simmer, so that's why there's so many FSX addons in my screenshots.
Anyway, I use "iOBit System Care 6 Ultimate" to clean up my laptop, and I was trying to use the inbuilt uninstaller to get rid of some programs. This is what happened:
Now, I know that all those programs DO NOT take up that much HDD space, considering the hard drive in this laptop is currently only 500GB. I can almost guarantee those programs DO NOT take up those huge amounts because 1: They are reasonably small addons and 2: Because on my old laptop, they never took up that much space.
So I also tried Revo Uninstaller, and this was the result:
Now, notice the top result? The "Carenado Cessna Skylane HD Series FSX"? Well, that's DEFINITELY not 50GB, that's 100% wrong in all fronts. I took a screenshot to prove so:
Yeah, that's TOTALLY 50GB right there
So, last but not least, here's my HDD space/free space:
Note that only the "Windows C: and Recovery Drive F:" are part of the HDD, the other partitions are part of my external 1TB HDD.
Weirdest part is that, the files DON'T take up that much space when I right click - properties in Windows Explorer. Now, I'm not sure what's the go but it's definitely odd. I can't get legitimate sizes from neither Revo or iOBit, and it's really annoying.
Also, programs like "Alan Wake" and "Adobe Master Collection Creative Suite 6" show up as the normal file size, yet ANY Flight Simulator X addon shows up as a huge amount?

Of course I know how to reduce the taskbar menu icons but I want to reduce them using registry.

I used to connect my Asus X72JR on my Flatscreen TV at 1080p, it always had a crispy sharp image.
After replacing my harddrive and reinstalling Windows 7 (64x) the image wasn't displayed in full size of my TV anymore but smaller (black edges around image) When i set my TV to full screensize everything gets blurry (it just spreads the image)
I updated to the latest graphic driver and looked at the screens resolution which was still set at 1920x1080 (recommended), everything was correct but the screen is either blurry or displayed smaller than the tv screen.
My Asus has a Radeon Mobility HD5470 driver
I have a second laptop, when I connect this to the TV is has a sharp image again even though the settings are exactly the same.
