Windows Corrupting Memory Cards
Feb 6, 2012
any computer running windows 7 but this new laptop i have (hp g6 core i5) seems to be continually corrupting memory cards out of my camera! when i first insert the memory card and view the pictures and go to change their orientation; windows comes up with a message saying it can't change it because the picture is no longer there! when you go back to view the folders on the card they appear as symbols as they have been corrupted! the first time it happened i downloaded (and purchased the key) for recovery which seems to do a good job of recovering the images. its really annoying me as to why it is happening! i'm now very careful and transfer images from the sd to the laptop straight away and safely remove the card afterwards. the laptop also corrupted a different memory card when the lid was shut and re-opened but im assuming this is because the computer was hibernating without the card being safely removed.has anybody else had this problem and if so how can it be sorted?

The problem is that no kinds of storage cards are currently working perfect on my computer. For an example no phones can be connected, have tryed 2 htc's with microsd cards, and a sony ericson with an m2 card, and same problem. Also if i try to open any SD cards, like camera it dosent work. The thing is that it comes up as removable drive, but when i try to open it it just says please insert card. I have tryed deleting, installing reformatting drivers, and cards like crazy and its the same. I have also tryed changing the drive letters around but the issue is the same. The only thing that makes the work is the following: If i leave the card in the cardreader, or a phone connected, then restarts the pc whitout removing the card or phone, then it works when its rebooted. but asoon as i remove the card/phone and reinsert them the issue is still there "please insert card".I have even changed the motherboard, cpu, and memory, and formated the computer 3 times but still same issue. So im thinking that windows is installing wrong driver or something? [code] Also the issue was the same on my old computer also running windows 7 that had a socket 775 build.

I original bought 4x2g of these:[URL]- G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL6D-4GBNQ They are rated 6-6-6-18 with a Cas Latency of 6, also have a speed of DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)Now since I only need to replace 1 stick, I figured try to get the same exact stick, but it seems they dont sell the exact ones any more.So I was going to get this single 2g stick of G.Skill's: [URL]- G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5S-2GBPQBut it seems to be rated a bit slower?5-5-5-15, lower voltage, a Cas Latency of 5 & its speed is DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)Will this limit the computers ability to really perform at it's highest possible rate of 8g if the 4th stick is slower like that?

I stuck a compact flash memory card into my computer and it wouldn't see it. Somewhere I saw that the computer sees memory cards as drive K. It so happens that some time ago I set up a partition on the hard drive as K.
I went into Disk Management and changed the letter to R, restarted the computer. It now won't see any drive. Everything on the desktop seemed to work and I could access the internet, but whenever I tried to look at C or R it would say something like 'server failed', or 'cannot locate server'.
So I went back to Disk Management and changed the letter back to K and now everything works fine. I have a number of programs located in K. If I can I would rather re-assign which drive the computer uses for memory cards (Win7, 64bit)

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655-1EM laptop running windows 7 home premium 64bit.OEM came pre-installed. I've had the laptop about 6 months. It works great but I seem to get the BSOD quite a lot. I noticed it only seems to happens when I'm using either of my external hard drives or SD cards. Usually when I am transferring a batch of large files between drives.

I just completed my first homebuilt system but have been having many crashes and bluescreens which as of now, those helping me think is caused by my memory. The crashes occur when I have 6 gig (3 sticks) installed, but so far everything seems stable with only 1 stick (2 gig). I am now testing each stick separately to make sure none are faulty, while someone in a forum is trying to adjust my memory speeds and Bios values. While testing one stick I had a bluescreen crash while Windows was installing. Now Windows freezes while starting up and the Repair function said it couldn't be fixed. I attempted to reinstall Windows 7 but near the end of the installation the mouse cursor and whole screen froze up. I retried and this time it froze at the beginning of the installation. I chose the new installation with backup of Windows Old option, not the update option. I am not that experienced technically, but would a reformat to a clean drive be necessary here? If so, I could not find a format option during the installation. Could someone walk me through what to do either with or without a reformat?

a number of backup copies of large files on external USB-connected NTFS drives differed from the source versions still on my hard drive. I also discovered that I could reproduce the issue with newly-copied files. Here are the specifics of the issue, following a series of experiments:
- On my system, copies of large files, files typically larger than 500MB, are corrupted (altered) roughly 30% of the time when copying them under Windows 7 64-bit to USB-connected NTFS-formatted external drives.
- No error occurs / no error message appears during the copy
- The file size of copy is always identical, whether or not data was altered during the copy process.
- File differences are confirmed via either the command-line "FC" command or a utility such as WinDiff
- The issue impacts copies made via the Windows GUI -OR- via command-line copy or xcopy
- The issue occurs with multiple external USB NTFS-formatted drives, no matter what make or model.
- Subsequent attempts to copy an affected file will ultimately yield an identical copy. This would seem to rule out interference by an external program such as an anti-virus program (and the only AV I am running is Microsoft Security Essentials)
- The USB drives involved pass error checks, and copies made to these drives on other (non Windows 7) systems produce identical copies
- So far, the third party utility "TeraCopy" manages to consistently produce clean copies, and therefore is a temporary workaround. This utility apparently works because it, by default, bypasses the NTFS memory caching operation used by the Windows 7 OS...a caching system which I have so far found no way of disabling.
- The problem does not appear to impact relatively small files (1 to 100MB or so). I have not found any particular threshold, but I have seen the issue impact numerous files in the 500MB neighborhood.
- The problem seems to date at least to the version of Windows 7 that was in release as far back as the Fall of 2010, as I discovered corrupted backup copies of files dating back that far. Again, the files are corrupted with respect to the original copy...NOT with respect to file structure itself.

I have an old HP Proliant PC that I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. There are only two PCI-X slots (one half height and the other full height). This is not PCI-Express or plain PCI.i need to add a video card to support a higher resolution monitor. There is an ATI Radeon 9200 PCI-X card out there, but it is not supported with Windows 7. Since this card type is more than 10 years old and operating systems have moved on, I need to know where to find a new PCI-X graphics card (or used) that will support higher resolution. If a standard PCI card will fit in the slot, will it work and what is the down side.no drivers for Windows 7 with PCI-X.

I recently built a new machine that I have three monitors for. When I only had two monitors I had this card installed: Newegg.com - PNY XLR8 VCG98GTEE5XEB GeForce 9800 GT EE 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
This card works perfectly fine and I had no issues with it and I plan to continue using it. However, now that I have three monitors and I need another video card I'm running into a lot of issues. I tried installing another PCIe 16 card I had lying around but my setup didn't seem to recognize the new card. I do not have the exact model number on that since it was given to me, but I believe it was a GeForce 6 series card. I also tried a PCI ATI Radeon card that I had laying around found here Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100945L-BK Radeon 7000 64MB 64-bit DDR PCI Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
This card showed up in the device manager as a Standard VGA adapater but in the properties it had an error saying "The device could not start".
So I guess my question is this: What is the cheapest way to get three monitors working on my windows 7 64 bit machine? I want to use the first card I linked to and one other one.
Would this card work? [URL] - PNY VCG84512SPEB GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

I'm able to hear sound when I perform a sound test during SB's setup through all my 5.1 speakers. Otherwise just crackle or silence. Do I just need to break down and buy a new sound card?

To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop. I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues. When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything. I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be. In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow? Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

My laptop, running Windows 7, suddenly started giving me an error message with code 10, and says "You need to format the disk before you can use it, do you want to format now", every time I insert a thumb drive or an SD ram card. When I go into disk management it shows that they are both "raw"n but when I insert them into my desktop running XP they read fine and disk management shows them as fat32. Why would Windows 7 suddenly start reading the fat32 thumb drives and SD ram cards as Raw? How can I get it to read them, as they read fine on other computers? I also have an external cdrom/dvd drive (because Windows 7 won't recognise the internal cdrom either), and also have an external hard drive that work fine.

i am having a problem with my memory getting tied up / used up and not being able to access it again until i reboot.
machine: dell xps studio 8100
os: win 7,
processor: i7 2.8
ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)
versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)
browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.
normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).

I find that if I run chkdsk and watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about 50MB every 2 seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around 3.2GB at which point my physical memory shows 99% used (I'm running 4GB), and the system of course slows to a crawl.f you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it, but try running something longer like chkdsk /r on a flash drive or chkdsk /f on a bigger internal drive (but not your OS drive as this would require a reboot) and watch the memory usage climb. I have duplicated this on both systems I have running Windows 7. My XP machine (checking the same USB flash drive) uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk (20 - 30 MB).

Memory Usage Goes Up Gradually (Memory Leak)When I starting the Windows (in the first few hours) everything is normal But after 1 day or 2 (sooner or later) the amount of available memory gradually goes down and the physical memory usage increasing. This increasing, continues until the memory usage reaches near the 88% and at that point , there isn't any memory available to operate any software . Also when memory reaches that point, I can't access any drive in the HDD; because everytime I want to open any folder, the following error appears :c: is not accessible.Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service At this point, I even can't shutdown or restart Windows normally; I must restart windows manually by pressing the restart button.after restart, everything goes to normal again; but this problem appears again and again ...

I just built a new computer and started with 8GB of memory. A few weeks down the line I purchased another set of the same memory because it was on such a good deal and had great reviews (newegg). It also was working well for me, so I figured maybe more could be better.
I haven't noticed any decrease/increase in system performance except Alt-Tabbing has recently got slower. Also, Windows 7 was sitting tight on 1.3gb to 2gb of memory usage prior to the extra 8 (now 16) being added. Even when gaming, it went up to like 3gb. Now that I've added the extra it's going up to 4.5gb or better. Also, is it possible to speed up my alt-tabbing? It seems to have a good 3-4 second pause in it instead of being immediate like it was.
Computer specs:
Windows 7 HP 64-bit
gSkill 16gb 1866 memory (BIOS shows it at 1866, too)
Intel i5-2500k Sandy Bridge (OC'd 4.6 with factory Overclock presets)
ASRock z68 Extreme4 mobo

I have two 9500GT video cards one id Evga and one is BFG they are both 1GB DDR2. I have looked into it but you experts will know. I think it's possible to set up a crossfire configuration. It might not be worth doing but i would mostly do it for fun and to see if I can get it working. My current mobo supports it and would like to play with it.
Is it possible with the same GPU but different companies and possibly slightly different specs on the rest of the card? I thought if it the same GPU you could do it.
